Welcome to the cash shop model. If this becomes the standard in MMOs, then I will no longer be playing MMOs. Because I really don’t see how people prefer to be nickel and dimed than just pay a traditional, trivial, sub free and get access to everything in game.

Though if people must play B2P or F2P games, then Rift has a very fair cash shop.

I agree with you. In a pay to play game where they are already receiving your money to support the continual updates that MMO are famous for then you shouldn’t be bothered with people trying to sell you stuff.

But to complain about people trying to sell you stuff in a buy to play model where the updates are contingent upon gem store purchases is just silly.

I don’t mind the gem store since it contains mostly just useless junk. However, there are some items that I’ld like to get in there (salvage-o-matic, endless gathering tools) but with the current gold to gems ratio they are way too expensive. Anet should put a cap on how much gems can cost. You should get at least 15 gems per gold. Otherwise only the super-rich tp players can afford them.

And that’s precisely the way that ANet wants the things to happen: the gold-gem ratio is so unfavourable for most of the players that you are forced to buy it with real money, which benefits ANet even more. Typical of b2p as compared to p2p games. Get used to it, mate.

On a sense this equals to WS payment model: if you have time, farm gold, otherwise pay. The key is that gem shop holds unnecessary stuff, while in WS it means access to the game, but since the game is focused on skins and most of decent ones are acquired through gemstore (namely weapons and about 8 sets of full armor), it’s kind of the same.

You can’t buy gold in WoW’s cash shop and the shop is purely cosmetic. Since I pay a sub already, the focus isn’t totally on the cash shop as it is here. This game would be a lot better if they spent as much time focusing on improving the game that they these micro transactions. Buy bag and bank space? Really?

I never got anything from the WoW cash shop, as the free 90 came when I bought the expansion. It’s not so much that a game has a cash shop, it’s the fact that it gates quality of life improvements behind one. I should have explained myself better.

So, they told us the plans before that. That there will be a long gap between LS and during that time we will get a feature update. They need time to examine the impact of the feature update and perhaps fine tune it a bit. They have China going live shortly. They plan to sync the LS releases between the NA/EU and China.

This lull at least gives me time to go exploring.

This is pretty much how I feel.
I’ve always loathed the idea of cash shops and microtransactions, so its frustrating to see everyone becoming so much more accepting of these models as time goes on. It’s especially revolting to see it crop up in games that do have subscription fees, but that’s the direction things are heading…

It’s difficult to find MMOs that I can get into at all even with that factor removed, but with that being the new standard, there’s pretty much no place for me going forward… ;-\

You have to look at the multifaceted aspects of game design. GW2 allows gem to gold conversion for multiple reasons. A few reasons that come to mind are to bite into the illegal RMT consumer base and to allow all players to earn gem shop items by playing the game. It’s probably not the main reason but when the company designing the game implements RMT as part of the system, they are actively making it harder for illegal RMT to profit. RMT is a serious issue for mmo companies trying to balance their economy and prevent other nefarious activity surrounding it. The fact that WOW never implemented RMT is at least one reason why the RMT industry fluorished for so long. You can imagine how many times Blizzard was asked to engage in legit RMT by their subscribers to help stem the tide of Gold Farmers. That wouldn’t kill the industry but it would have been another tool in their belt.

As for WOW not having a cash shop focus, of course not, it is a game that is heavily sub focused. Where GW2 push you to the cash shop, WOW in particular designs content to push you to sub longer. They are both definitely trying to make money, it’s just that some people prefer the time-gating, slow down, kill claiming (etc.) tactics of sub games more than the heavy advertising, cosmetic pushing, qol gating that goes on in cash shop games. Different strokes is all. I don’t blame people who have a problem with the cash shop advertising but you have to remember that P2P has invisible walls as well. Personally, there are some things I like about the P2P model and some things I like about the cash shop model. I prefer GW2s cash shop model over other cash shop models.

I know not to expect articles on things to come, but I’d love it if they mixed it up a bit with stuff like classes guides divided by such as weapon choice so the subject doesn’t get exhausted right away or do small features on different maps weekly or such to give players a refresher on some of the events and areas of interest there, like the fun Oouo chain in Timberline no one ever bothers with.

That just the evolution in combat style we see more and more in MMOs these days. That is also hardly unique to GW2. Even Champions Online had already some more activ combat where you could move while using most skills and instead dodging we had active blocking. Then all these newer asia games like Vindictus and Tera.

However everything else .. the questing .. and of course the so called “endgame” is totally different. And after Rift i sweared i never again will touch an MMO with this raiding bs.

Doesn’t the costume UI have a “Buy Now” button?

For Transmutation Charges, yes.

Sarcasm, delivered with a
delicate, brick-like subtlety.

This is really starting to annoy me.

It’s pushing me further and further away from the game as well.

It’s not fun anymore.

I don’t understand why.

1. You don’t need anything from Store to play
2. If you DO want something from store, you can buy it with RL money OR ingame gold.
3. It’s existence is transparent to you if you don’t use it
4. It allows you to play for free, even if you don’t use it or like it. (all the people that use the store are subsidizing your playtime OR curbing inflation by removing gold from the game.)

If they balanced all that with also adding new stuff we could earn in game, I think people would feel a lot more favorable to the gem shop.. and might even buy more in it. But when the focus is strongly on the gem shop, to the point that we’ve had so little added that we can earn through game play, that’s when resentment starts breeding.

I agree that Rift has a brilliant cash shop/in game reward balance going on.

This is really starting to annoy me.

I don’t think that’s an honest assessment. The stuff in the shop doesn’t compete with the stuff that drops through gameplay so that association doesn’t make sense.

In addition, the stuff that drops through gameplay can be converted in to gold to buy the stuff in the shop … so I would say the people that resent the shop aren’t being honest on how the shop impacts their gaming.

Yea it annoys me too that they try to make money from their game.

I don’t think players would complain if a decent amount of money was being reinvested into substantial content, profession improvements, fixes, personal story revamps, dungeons, …, …, … and a plethora of other important core things.
