Was gonna ask the same question of Norn, but I could see Norn that follow the Raven taking up Mesmer roles.

…But Charr?

Wouldn’t a Charr find themselves ostracized from the rest of society for being a “coward”?

A Charr can be a Mesmer. There were ton of Charr Mesmer bosses in Guild wars 1, so yes it is not impossible. However their society has changed a bit where some look down on magic, but so long as magic users use their magic in useful ways they will be accepted by most. In my opinion they would fit very well in the Ash Legion.

Edited to clear something up.

There is actually a Charr Mesmer in one of the personal stories. It doesn’t end well for him unfortunately but that wasn’t because he was a Mesmer.

Charr have a stigma against magic but Mesmer specifically? I don’t think so. They probably would be considered a coward if they were in blood legion but there abilities fit in with ash just fine.

I’ll bet Mesmer is the Ash Legion’s favorite flavor of mage, actually. If not for the Charr stigma against magic users, they’d probably be the second most popular class there after Thieves. And as noted, that stigma is greatly relaxed in the name of simple pragmatism, provided the Charr Mage in question uses their power in service of the Legions, rather than trying to elevate themselves like the Flame Legion Shamans.

Former Guild Wars 2 fan. RIP, ArenaNet’s integrity.

Someone doesn’t know much about Ash Legion. Illusions, stealth, backstabbing, treachery in the name of the Legions, spying, assassinations, counter-intelligence. It’s all good. Ash Legion would welcome Mesmers with open paws. Blood is too brutal, and Iron is too rigid. Ash goes everywhere and gets into everything.

“People don’t hate Scarlet the way Game of Thrones
fans hate Joffrey. They hate her the way Star Wars
fans hate Jar Jar Binks.”-not a direct quote, but still true.

Yep, which is why my mesmer is an Ash Legion charr. (I love the charr and wanted a mesmer who isn’t the stereotypical underdressed fancy-frilly entertainer.) I’d expect that even Ash has a good deal of anti-magic bias, but they also strike me as the most pragmatic of the lot, and the mesmer’s skill at deceiving people and messing with their minds is just too useful for a Legion of spies, infiltrators and silent killers.

Turns out my charrmer’s sire was a mesmer, too. He was also an untrustworthy moron, mind, but his profession choice was not held against him in that regard.

All in all, I don’t think a charr mesmer has more trouble than any other magic-user, which depending on your Legion or warband may be a whole lot or comparatively little.

Charr have some degree of suspicion towards magic because of the Flame Legion, but they’re not so pigheaded about it that they’d deny its usefulness in combat and ostracize it completely. They recognize it as a useful tool on the whole, though there are probably some Charr more weary about magic than others.

As for being seen as a “coward” I certainly don’t see that as being the case. The Charr have no issues using machines or war beasts in combat, so I don’t see why they’d have a problem with magical illusions either.

It’s the whole standing in the rear that gets you the title of coward. I don’t think you’d be seen as a coward in the frontlines wearing nothing but cloth.

He’d probably get beaten up by the bigger cubs for being a coward and then shot by his commanding officer for using pink magic.

He’d probably create illusions to get beaten up by the bigger cubs for being a coward, and then shot by his commanding officer while using pink magic that bounces the projectile back at his commanding officer, killing the officer instantly and leaving him to take up the role.

I have a Charr Mesmer, her warband name is “Tailtwister” because she’d use illusions to prank the other cubs in the fehrah! (which would include going invisible and giving their tails a canthan burn!)

Look at it this way. If you make a Charr mesmer, you will be one of the most unique characters in the game.

There are literally two Charr mesmers total on my server in wvw (Northern Shiverpeaks). I’m one of them.

If an Asura can join the Vigil and not understand the Priory’s “technobabble”, then I see no reason a Charr can not be a mesmer.

In fact, that would be a powerful addition to the Charr armies.

Thanks, I had a bit too much whiskey in me at the time and I wasn’t sure where I was or what I was doing.
