The RNG is a well known problem but the people above are making a good point. There should be an option to obtain precursor trough series of quests and battles. Maybe with some lore as well regarding each legendary.

The RNG is a get rich quick for people with luck. I throw the occasional 4 weapons into the forge. If I get a precursor, guess what? I’m selling it. This a chance I take, one that is very little cost, about the equivalent of buying a scratch ticket and hoping for the best.

If you have the funds for (or the mats to craft) 1600 greatswords to throw away in one giant gamble of whats a fortune in this game when you could have just bought it, even if you needed a bit more funds, its your own fault. You wanted a shortcut, it failed.

Its RNG, what did you expect?

You had just spend 400G betting in your luck. Almost a precursor, so… you are doing things wrong. Soon A-net will introduce a form to craft precursors, so… stop wasting Gold guy.

After what the OP posted, you’re still gonna defend Arena.Net???

The guy wants his legendary weapon. Apparently that in this game, going on an epic adventure to build your legendary weapon = standing in front of the mystic forge and dumping items.

kittening Legendary.

+1
I’d rather go through a raid and do something epic rather than stand in front of the mystic toilet.

Oh really? Please describe in detail a ‘raid’ that could be done that would justify the reward of a precursor and still be difficult enough too keep Legendaries rare.

Do you want the Legendary status gated by behind skill? I’m all for it! I’ll bet you 300g that the community sets this board on fire should that happen.

A fight against all six gods and Abbadon as well, all at once. It would take your entire guild 18 hours to try. The fight contains over 900 different 1HKO attacks which each gives you about 0.2 seconds to perform the right action to dodge it (one of which involves typing the entire alphabet if every 4th letter was swapped with every 3rd, twice, this gives you a generous 10 seconds to do however), and point precise positioning of the bosses (GW2 has a tanking class right?).

There will be news articles the next day after the patch about how GW2 caused players to vomit, become physically sick and/or die from doing this raid over and over again, but hey, then we got a hard enough fight to get precursors.

Cookies if you got what the 18 hours was referencing.

I’m sorry but ANET needs to review the definition of legendary and put a legendary path towards the weapons nto the game. The current implementation is simply amateur.

I look back at one of my early MMOs and what I had to do to get my water sprinkler for my cleric in EQ;

-Obtain Lord Bergurgle’s Crown from Lord Bergurgle (Lake Rathe)
-Give give Lord Bergurgle’s Crown to Shmendrik Lavawalker (Lake Rathe)
-Natasha Whitewater spawns and attacks Shmendrik Lavawalker (Lake Rathe)
-Spirit of Flame spawns upon Shmendrik’s death and attacks you (Lake Rathe)
-Loot Damaged Goblin Crown from Spirit of Flame (Lake Rathe)
-Give Damaged Crown to Natasha Whitewater (Lake Rathe)
-Receive Ornate Sea Shell (ID Ornate Sea Shell I) (Lake Rathe)
-Give Ornate Sea Shell (ID Ornate Sea Shell I) to Omat Vastsea (Timorous)
-Receive Coral Statue of Tarew (Timorous)
-Give Coral Statue of Tarew to A Seeker (Sol Ro Temple)
-Plasmatic Priest spawns and attacks (Sol Ro Temple)
-Loot Blood Soaked Plasmatic Priest Robe (Sol Ro Temple)
-Kill Lord Gimblox (Solusek’s Eye)
-Loot Lord Gimblox’s Signet Ring (Solusek’s Eye)
-Turn in Blood Soaked Plasmatic Priest Robe to Omat Vastsea (Timorous)

-Kill Overking Bathezed (Chardok)

-Give Shimmering Pearl to Zordak Ragefire (Nagafen’s Lair)
-Receive Swirling Pearl and Zordak’s Box of Bindings (Nagafen’s Lair)
-Speak with Warder Cecilia (Skyfire)
-Loot four Pearlescent Fragments off random NPCs in Skyfire (Skyfire)

-Give An Assembled Pearlescent Shard to Warder Cecilia (Skyfire)
-Receive Pearlescent Seal (Skyfire)
-Kill Zordak Ragefire (human), who spawns and attacks (Skyfire)
-Zordakalicus Ragefire (dragon) spawns and attacks upon death (Skyfire)

It was long; it was a major adventure the moment you started; it often took many guildmates or people within a zone to help.. you fought goblin kings; dragons (ones that took some modicum of skill vice the stand on rock spam 1 type we fight now); had to swim through sunken temples and traverse the known world. You could work it at your own pace and the results gated and you could measure your progress. It felt like a truly epic journey.

It sucks that you didn’t get a precursor but really… RNG is RNG. If you aren’t willing to lose on your gamble, then don’t take the gamble to begin with. It’s not ANets fault that people like you continue to GAMBLE in the forge when you are clearly not willing to ‘lose’ (not get what you want the RNG to give you) without quitting the game.

I know getting a precursor by any method is a real pain in the backside. I completely agree with people who say there need to be better ways of obtaining precursors. But if your choice is to gamble however much gold worth of rares that is (250-300 gold?) instead of continuing to save up a higher amount of gold and BUY a precursor, you need to realize that mystic forge for precursors is a gamble and that you just might not get what you want when you gamble.

1600 probably isn’t even the average amount required. You didn’t have bad RNG at all. If it only took 1600 then people who could afford that much would be printing money because the precursor sells for about 3x the cost of those 1600 rares, not to mention all the other exotics you get out of it.

I know this is no where near 1.6k rares (cost) but the day I said to my friends and guildies that I am going to quit gambling for my precursor and start saving is when I got The Colossus from a gilded coffer (the precursur for the Juggernaut, which sells only 50g less than spark) with a little more farming and help I managed to buy my spark instead and guess what… this all happened today! So the moral of my story is.. I was doing it all wrong at 1st, just play the game or save up and buy the precursor because you never know… your next mob kill could contain a precursor.

I put in 1000g into the Mystic forge and got ’NOTHING"

:) I’m currently saving for a Ascended weapon & armor when they are released.
Over the whole “current” legendary weapons that everyone already has and is nothing special anymore… while i save i play for fun doing FOTM L48 dailies for the skins.. now there’s a reward that is WORTH going for and shows off your skill.. On my way to the1000 fractal runs achievement hehe

The mystic toilet is a horrible horrible thing.. but it works well as a gold sink for Anet and keeps the economy from accumulating too much gold.

At the end of the day what else is “everyone” going to blow the gold on if not new shinnies.

Hope Anet does create a new way to get a precurser though buying it off a Trading post “should NOT” be the way they wanted us to get it ? or is it?

Even I’m not happy with the way Anet handles precusors (and I both have a precusor and I’m a rabid fan boi…ask anyone lol).

It’s too random, too hard, too annoying. It’s not legendary. It’s luck. And yes you can farm gold and buy one, but that’s not particularly legendary either.

I think the way legendary weapons are acquired is one of the big problems with the game as it stands.

Anet had to make it where legendary weapons were super rare to get. Would you really want to see everyone shooting unicorns?

As long as Legendary Weapons are only as strong as the highest naturally obtainable gear (ascended weapons soon) then I have no problems.

I also don’t like that it is luck and I wish legendary weapons where obtainable through a scavenger hunt or something. I’m glad that soon precursors can be crafted.

1) Yes, they had to make it super rare to get.
2) It sucks how Legendary Weapons don’t have more power than regular weapons.
3) Implementation of #1 is really awful with the RNG component.

It’s posts like the OP’s that made my choice of not ever trying for a Legendary, at least, not via the Mystic Forge.

What an unjust and horrible, horrible experience.

They said they gonna fix it.

But anything with RNG or long repetitive grinds is almost as bad.

Precurssor shouldnt be easy to get, I give you that, but it should be based on skill, even if it is a long chain of skill tests.

Lets see how it will work. I have a feeling next patch will surprise us, considering some post I saw about it*.

Sunk cost fallacy

If he throws 500 in and then stops.. those 500 were wasted. Whereas if you keep going, those 500 were an investment, you’re making progress..

Yeah, of course it doesn’t work that way. It doesn’t matter if you’ve burned 1600 rares already, the next four are just as likely to pop out your precursor as the first four or any other four.

But it’s very difficult to make the decision to stop and “abandon” the money you’ve already lost.

It sucks, I feel for you. Having myself two legendaries, I was pretty ‘lucky’ since I bought Dawn mid December (it was ‘only’ 300g) and later I made Kraitkin (Venom being 25g).

I am stuck now with The Bifrost being one of the most expensive precursors (600g).

This whole legendary stuff needs an overhaul. Like someone said: throwing stuff into the Mystic Forge isn’t really legendary. Legendary items should start a quest which challenges you for epic and kitten hard battles (like Liadri). This should never ever be an RNG-Fest. It’s boring and stupid and is very disencouraging especially with cases like this.

I also hope they will introduce a quest with lore behind it. Every legendary weapon should be really legendary, they should get some special abilities like opening a portal to your home instance or something alike. There must be a bit more incentive to create a legendary (and make stats a free choice not only PVT!!!).

Getting a Precursor by any means other than buying on the TP is not a goal that anyone should set. It really is about as silly as setting a personal goal of “winning the lottery”. No matter what you do, you cannot meaningfully impact your ability to attain this “goal”, and setting unrealistic goals will quickly lead to heartbreak, depression, and anger.

Really easy fix here. Either Anet creates an alternate route for obtaining a precursor that rewards dedication and effort or they create a token system where each eligible toss in the forge outputs a precursor token. Arbitrarily huge number of tokens and you get your weapon of choice.

Either way, the only legit way to work towards getting one is forging. There is no other way to obtain the content yourself. Unless you see buying something off the TP as something they should list on the steps for making your legendary weapon?

It seems to me that a precurser’s odds are about 1/100 lvl 80 exotics. I know Anet hasn’t released this info, but i’ve talked with others that have forged them, and I’ve gotton 2 precursers now from the forge. This is a ratio that i think is really close to accurate.

With 1600 rare gs, that’s 400 attempts, which there’s about a 1/5 chance to upgrade an item in mf. So he probably got around 80 exotics. Which is a pretty good chance at a precurser, but it’s still just a chance.

The SAB skins were a 1/50 chance, yet it took me about 160 chests before i got my 1st, but then i got another at 180 chest, and my luck got alot better after my streak of bad luck was over. My point is even if he did another 1600 there is no gaurentee.

It’s a gamble, and the precurser prices are so high because they are so rare. Only gamble with what you can afford to loose, don’t throw all you got at the forge expecting something, because most likely you will be dissapointed.

Diminished returns can seem likely when you hit a rough patch. I’ve done 6-700g worth with nothing, but just 3 nights ago i popped 3 dawns in a 3-4 hour span. No diminished returns, this is just how the RNG works.

As far as anything being guaranteed, I really don’t think we can say that there is a guarantee. I am pretty sure that dumping 3k rares into the forge could very well net you with nothing. At the end of the day, the RNG is so bad and the numbers are so low that you are never guaranteed. I’ve gone from 800g, to 0g back to 400g, then to 900g, then to 150g and then to 1200g. All this obtained without hitting astronomical numbers like 1600 greatswords.

People in this thread have stated, your chances to get a pre are the same on your first try as they are on your 100th try. It literally comes down to luck. The only trend I’ve noticed was getting named exotics. Go dump 100g in the forge and count the named exotics you get. The more you get, the higher the chance to get a pre on your next batch of 50 staves. Of course, thats just my observation so it could mean fk all to everybody else. Again, it’s all luck and even my small sample size of 15 won’t do much in helping others.

With as much forging experiance as you have, can you please put a number on what you feel the odds are. I feel 1/100 lvl 80 exotics is pretty close to accurate. Do you feel like you have forged around 1500 exotics, give or take, obtaining those 15 precursers? I know sample sizes are small from the data i’m using, and through my own experiances, but i’d really love to hear #’s, even if your guesstimating.
