I was one of those people who have been in the game for the longest of time (2500 hrs) and the precursor always eluded me , i actually have a huge problem with gambling in this game so i always ended up losing bundles of gold. I tried COF and did it for about 2 weeks straight and felt like i wasn’t myself anymore so i quit that abruptly , decided why even go for a legendary at this point..so i told my friend if i don’t get one by 2500 hr mark i’m quitting . Sooooo 4 days ago i decided since i never spend the little 80g i have i might aswell try my chance at the forge…put in buy orders for 75-80 rare hammers for 17-20s ea..within 24 hrs they were all filled…time to flush some gold down the toilet!

Got down to my last few and bang i had to take a triple take , there it was the Colossus!. Man was i jolly , but the gambler in me wasn’t happy…sooo 4 days later (today) i decided i’ll take the 450g from the Colossus and try to hit it big with Dusk. I tried to place in buy orders for 1200 greatswords but they briefly got outbidded repeatedly , so decided i’ll just craft them and ended up crafting 1300 total Valkyrie Greatswords. Threw all of them in sets of 100 , and by the time i hit the 500 (avged 2-3 measly exotics per 100) mark i begin to feel discouraged , 300 i hit sadness , and finally 150 i felt stupid which upset me.

After all of this failed rares i had 65 exotics left probably totaling 130-140g , decided why not i failed this far might aswell go hard or go home…Took the 65 exotics and decided i best use those stupid forge stones ANET gave me. Got down to the last 6 exotics and anger set in , went on and threw those last in and sweet mother jesus! Back to back precursors lol…

Also i took the advice of somone who gave another poster advice of putting 20% profit aside so i did , placed 60g in the bank…so i guess my luck isnt terrible after all.

Selling both is probably enough to buy most of your twilight, congrats.

I might have to try this with all those useless stones lying in my bank, well over 100 iirc.

Oh i main an engineer , i only used my warrior cause he is 400 in WS ; i crafted him up to 80 just like all my other alts..since i cant bear playing anything other than my mad scientist lol

It’s funny in a sad way to imagine what would have happened if you hadn’t crafted them yourself

…. it’s those freebie stones! ;P My wife and I dumped all of the achievement-box stones into the forge with random exotics, and within a week’s period (for all boxes to come in), had gotten about 8~ precursors; about a 1:30 chance (based on stone count). Without the stones, however, it’s been more-so 1:70+, but that’s without keeping count.

Considering it was roughly 1:30 with the stones, 8~ times in a row, throughout an entire week, and on two separate accounts, it’s tempting to assume they do increase the chances. Quite a few months ago (last time I played w/ the forge), I had also used store bought stones and got The Legend within <10 forges, but stopped after a couple dozen more tries.

Unfortunately, the factors included within the RNG algorithm will probably remain pure speculation to us, and possibly to most ANet employees as well. There have been many times I’ve thought about there being a daily/monthly distribution cap, or the common “lucky account” paranoia…

Funny thing is i begin to form conspiracies that Dusk / Dawn is completely bugged…when i hit that 150 mark i was convinced something is seriously wrong with those precursors lol

I thought the mystic stones lowered your chances of acquiring your precursor due to the fact that the stone counts as a random rare/exotic(ie: three gs and a stone doesn’t necessary equate to four gs)?

so it’s 3 any exotic weapons, and then a stone? would you always get an exotic back? on the presumptino that you get a precursor on any given forge, the only “downside” i guess is you won’t be able to choose which weapon type you get back exactly.

that’s pretty awesome though mang. grats on the Zap and Spark! lol

side note re: Dawn. a coulpe weeks ago, MF daily, used it twice already. so i threw in 12 exotic GS just for the heck of it. third time’s the charm right? and out came Dawn! so it’s still possible. i been gunning for Twilight, and will most likely keep trying when the MF daily comes up. but might give the stones method a shot too, sicne i have so many sitting around. ://

Correct. We just decided to gamble again to use them all up, and it had an oddly high success-rate for some reason. For all we know, the freebie stones are bugged and provide a 5% higher chance.

When I said “decided to gamble again”, I was referring to my original post. Our current success-rates are dreadful, but we aren’t using stones.

lol maybe , but yeah you dont get to pick which exotic type you get , its all random from even the underwater list q.q

well, gonna test my luck whenever the MF daily comes up again. or maybe i’ll just give it a shot and put the stones to good use lol.

Just use ‘em all up. ;P If you’re not “lucky”, then, well, it’s only gold.

If you’re curious about the precursor distribution from 3 randoms + stone, then I believe they were (between wife and I)… The Chosen One, Venom, The Energizer, The Hunter, Dawn, The Legend, Dawn, a spear (I think) w/ a weird name, and then something else. One of those may have been without a stone — don’t recall.

Those were mainly all from using the freebie stones given up to 5k & 5.5k ach. boxes over a week-ish.

Our current attempt (without stones) has cost probably over 2-300g thus far w/ no precursor yet. I may call it quits with the forge for a while if that keeps up. ;P

Im crafting 1200 GS more lets see how i fair this time..luckily thats equivalent to the measly 360g i got from Zap!…but calling 360g measly make me sound a bit greedy :|

Hmm maybe that good feeling was merely gas because it failed , ended up with like 90 exotics probably totaling over 150-170g and i decided against the stones this time cause i really desired Dusk and still NOTHING…pfft down to 400g buuuuuut once you hit a certain number its kind of hard to go back to a smaller one…

wait i might have missed something, wouldn’t you have had enough gold, or at least CLOSE to enough gold to buy Dusk outright? or are you bent on getting it via the MF?

the later..and remember i only desire Dusk cause of its price tag..

Well this was my sole purpose when creating this thread , to documents all my actions in my rise and fall (the little details) . Expecting no ridicule is quite naive of me , so when i created this thread I was fully aware of what to expect lol.

Decided since im so poor i might aswell use those useless stones right?..well i bounced back to a limited degreee! screenshot has the items i bought , only had enough to buy about 50 of them.

Now i have The Hunter was actually the purpose of me doing all this , i wanted to get 1 more precursor when i had 700 ish gold and buy the hunter with it and still have a nice lump sum since all the other pieces of my legendary is done! but by now i think we all know whats going to happen to this precursor lol

My only problem now with this journey is , im out of stones so i lose that vital back up plan and get this…the only way i’ve obtained precursors is via those stones..

Heh you know whats funny? 2 weeks ago I got spark and just earlier today I got the hunter. The very first precursor I got was the colossus a month back.

We’re pretty similar as far as what the forge poops out for us lol

800g is where i draw the line since i experienced after 3500 rares how rare it STILL is to get a precursor…

So wait. Are you guys saying you are putting in 4 stones and getting precursors or 3 weapons and a stone? Is it really giving a better result?

I dont use stones. They randomize it and you very well could get anything. This includes underwater precursors, offhands, torches etc. I only use 4 of the same weapon type + rarity

Also, to the OP. I got the legend + dusk last night. 20g for legend, 250g~ for dusk

I just bought a bunch of lv 80 rare staves and it came out 5-6th try. Dusk didnt come easy though. I was having doubts on whether or not I was going to get it but after buying 1 last batch of 50 or so greatswords, it came out on the first try.

I didnt use anything specific really, but I’ve always bought only lv 80 and the cheapest. Ended up driving the price up for pretty much every rare greatsword because I was buying bulk of 50 for a good hour lol.

Honestly, I was just wildly gambling last night. I should have stopped after getting the legend, but I just had to test my luck. Had I not gotten dusk, I probably wouldnt have been able to afford the listing fee for the legend. I woulda kept buying and buying and buying until i became one of those poor souls who have spent 500+ gold gambling for dusk.

Anyway, no more mystic forge for me. My gambling desires have been fulfilled

Yesterday, 2 of our guild members got a precursor each from putting in stones wit hrandom lvl 80 rares. So some more guildies tried and also got lucky. In the end, we got 9 pre cursors. And i think about 20 people tried this method, using up 40 to 100 mystic stones.

I got the Colossus on my 5th try. Since i still had so much rare weapons left, i kept dunking them in until my 100 stones were gone. No other pre cursor dropped for me but all the exotics that dropped gave me more gold back than i initially paid to get the rares.

haha so over the weekend, and with MF daily back in the rotation at least one day, i tested my luck with the stones. so far, nothing yet. got a few named though, so that’s always nice. lol

Well im glad you guys are having success , but im officially done. I’m happy and poor all in one bundle , because this ride has been sporatic lol..to say the least.

As usual , before receiving a response from you guys since my patience is horrible i decided WHY NOT?! , found out the Ugly sticks and Megmatons are worth 6g and i had 8 of those together lol , decided to finish forging the remainder crap exotics worth 1-2g and voila! i’m the comeback man :o

Hahaha. Last night I decided to do the forge again. Got Dawn after 60g~ . I got greedy and ended up dropping somewhere around 500g before finally getting the colossus to save me. Lesson learned with that close call.

Do you plan to keep going? The luck has to run out completely somewhere down the line

Remember , 600g or 10g is gg for me. I Must successfully forge another precursor and do it using 450g! and Balkan you are insanely lucky with those GS man , remember i did 2k of those rare kinds and like 200 exotic GS to no avail.

Oh also the lesser known precursors like Leaf of Kudzu etc (at least for me) probably got thrown back in cause im not familiar with their names nor their prices looooll…

i bought 75 exotic shortbows for 90g and threw em in, threw in 75, then you get 18 back, threw those in until i had around 8 left , i got my Lover.

Gratz Amanda! , for me those rares are nothing but failure …ALL of my success is coming from purely exotics..only time i EVER succeeded with rares is what started this journey off and that was when i got my first colossus , from then on out i got nothing but precursors from solely exotics..

Seriously you’re getting them all, with the increasing Diminishing Returns that may account seems to get per day I’ll never be able to obtain the precursor from the Mystic Toilet… boy am I glad that they’re adding a new way to obtain them later on T_T

As of today (haven’t attempted to use the Forge in some months now) I have dumped 400 rares and 50 exotic greatswords… one day… one day…

further tested the stones with my luck yesterday with the stones, but to no avail. didn’t get any named drops either but more than a handful of berserker pearl weapons so i put those back into the TP and broke even if anything. ://

I’ve played for probably very close to 3000 hours, thrown everything I owned into the mystic forge 4 times (I threw every single exotic/rare I had ever owned down the MF, and then bought 400 gold worth of rares to toss in 4 times as well which totaled about 1,600 gold), and I never, ever got a single precursor. Time to play Diablo 3 where I can actually win and not be bombarded with RNG for the rest of my life. Yes, isn’t that sad that I have more luck in D3, a game that was famous for its terrible drop rates?

Lesson? Buy a precursor. 1600 gold = 3-4 precursors. You throw MF only if you want to gamble.

Or you don’t happen to care for a few hundred gold like me lol , im not rich by any means and nothing more i love than gold but i think i love gambling even more :o
