Q:

Hi there!

I can’t decide which profession I should choose for my thief. I got LW maxed out but I need one more profession and I have a hard time choosing. Could anyone give me some pros/cons for each of the professions?

A:

Weaponsmith will enable you to craft ascended weapons at lvl 500.
Jeweling is not raised to 500 yet so the best you can craft are exotic trinkets.
But that also means that leveling jeweling is still quite cheap, once jeweling gets raised to 500, there will be alot of demand for jeweling mats and it will get more expensive.

Jeweler doesn’t have a lot of advantages since it hasn’t been given a grandmaster tier yet, and ascended trinkets are available by other means. I recommend having all 8 among 4 characters though, to keep your options open.

Don’t they sell an upgrade so you can have three crafts active? Or was that a limited-time item?

I would say do all of them. For my main I have weaponsmith, armorsmith, artificing, and jeweler maxed. I don’t see any reason not to, other then time and money. But If you are not in a hurry, it shouldn’t be an issue.

Not really worth the cost unless you constantly swap between crafts.

You’ll probably end up leveling all crafts anyway, so don’t build up too much pressure deciding which one(s) you do first.

Most of the stuff you can craft up to level 400, you can also buy on the TP, so that takes off additional pressure.

Reasons to level crafting:

  • XP boost to the character (actually leveling the character up) – not so useful beyond level 80, more useful on alts.
  • Crafting of items that are account. These include ascended weapons, armor and back items.
  • Crafting of time-gated stuff; you can make a pretty penny crafting such things and selling them on the trading post to people who don’t want to wait. The most recent example was plant food and heat lamps, but the market has set now so it is no longer really worth it. There will be a next time though!
  • For convenience: use Artificer to craft blue luck into green luck, into yellow and orange luck – saves a lot of double clicks eating luck! If you salvage items a lot, it makes sense to have artificer active just for this.
  • In a similar vein, you may want to have one armor or weapon craft at level 450+ so you can refine bloodstone dust to bricks (same for dragonite ore and empyreal fragments) so these items don’t take up so much space in your bank with the stacks and stacks and stacks of them that players tend to accumulate.

Crafts on several characters vs. a dedicated character

  • I have leveled all crafts to 400, and I’m in the process of leveling the remaining weapons/armor ones to 500 (only got armorsmith and tailor left).
  • I also have them all on my main so I don’t get confused (Which recipe is unlocked on which character? Did I just delete the alt that was my chef? etc.)
  • I still use crafting sometimes to give an alt a boost during leveling the alt, but these are all redundant.
  • Some people like to spread out their crafts along their alts, this way they don’t have to pay to switch back and forth between crafts, but at the same time, they tend to lose the overview, can accidentally delete a leveled crafting discipline with a character, etc.
  • Recipes are only unlocked for the character who “reads” the recipe! This includes the recipes that now drop from collection achievements and that you can only get 1 of (ever) so make sure you choose the character to “learn” it carefully!

Additional crafting licence, yay or nay?

  • I DID buy the additional crafting license, because during the last month I was crafting plant food (huntsman), piquante plant food (chef) and grow lamps (jeweler) on a daily basis, all three are time-gated and can be crafted only once a day. I’m sure ANet did this on purpose, and it worked -_- but I made a LOT of gold during the first few weeks so it was worth it. I don’t think you need it at this point in time!
