What's the purpose of crafting in GW2?
Who told you it doesn’t work in guild wars 2? I craft for both reasons, for fun and for exp. In Guild wars 2 theres those 4 reasons to craft.

Well, I crafted my own armor until level 30. At level 30 I had not enough (tier 2) ingredients to craft one set of armor and you need to craft a lot more to level the crafting. Although I’m gathering a lot and kill a lot for fine crafting materials. At this point a small scale (3 required for one insignia ) cost ca. 7s at the trading post. Whereas the complete item cost only ca. 60c
In summary, ingredients cost more than 21s and the produced item less than 1s!

One word: Legendaries
The Legendary weapons require crafted items which are account bound. So to get one, you’ll need to level up at least 2 crafting professions to 400.
To find out which, see here: http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Legendary_weapon
I agree with the market right now (inflated material prices because to many people are crafting just to get to Lvl 400 as quickly as possible) and the amount of gear that drops off the mobs, there isn’t much reason to craft here atm. I am sure it will get better once the material prices drop, but the market still won’t be there to make good money selling. Getting the Legendary Weapons is 1 good reason. The XP is another. I have heard the way everyone became Lvl 80 in the first week of the game was due to crafting, and not going around killing things.
Personally I think they should add 1 trait to crafting ability. The ability to repair the equipment you made. It doesn’t make much sense that I could craft that set of armor I am wearing, but the minute it gets broken, I have to take it to a special repair shop to get it fixed. Maybe let crafters use some basic materials that were used to create the armor in the first place (Like a few Leather to fix a leather jacket). The adena sink is still kind of there, but its more of a material sink instead.

The only real reason to do crafting is if you find it fun.
The XP isn’t that great when you look at the costs. You could be making XP AND money doing other things.
Legendaries aren’t a good reason to level crafting because of the insane amount of other stuff you need to make them. They aren’t even a goal most players will have a chance of reaching (which is ok with me, some stuff should be extremely hard to get).
I gave up on crafting after the first week. Now I’m just selling the mats I collect. Once the costs go down maybe I’ll try crafting again. But it will be after I’ve done everything else and have a big pile of gold to blow through.
Actually I crafted the equip I’m using right now and I gathered all the materials by my self. Maybe it’s to much work for you but this is the first time I enjoy crafting in a game. My next stept is gather materials for my exotic armor and craft it. By the way, I reached 75 from 70 only crafting in just 1 hour, and made it easier reach 80. The experience from crafting is really good.

lol yes, I just sell my items and buy new ones instead of repairing them, at least if they’re greens, doesn’t work for yellow items anymore :-p
The loss you make by selling+buying an item is just a few copper (buy new item on TP, vendor old one), in comparison to several silver repair cost, higher than the item’s value.

That’s just…
Make me wonder, why not have recipies for consumable repairs, and get rid of the repair vendors. At least such items will never fall in price.
Actually any crafter who can make such items should also be able to repair them. Maybe for a small fee. Makes crafters that much more useful.

The expression on your face when you just crafted your first exotic and realize you would have gotten it cheaper if you just sold the mats and bought the item from the TP…
Crafting your own armor is a way to avoid grinding a dungeon for the 1.4k tokens required for a full set of exotic.
Plus, legendaries.
Legendaries yes, but for exotics it’s cheaper to buy them directly from the TP and sell any mats you come across.
I’m a jeweler, and i can for sure say that i use my accesories, rings and necklaces that i craft myself.

I don’t understand why people are having trouble keeping up with their level, I am actually way ahead of myself in Armorsmithing to the point where it actually frustrates me to carry around a set I can’t wear for a little while.
I do agree though that crafting requires so many resources that buying gear on the Trading Post is simply more efficient.
Yeah, legendaries are great. Unless, of course, you’re playing a condition damage build.
That said, I’m still levelling crafting. I’ve gotten decent upgrades out of it here and there and, if nothing else, getting materials for larger bags is easy.
@Kezikal: Legendaries can be transmuted onto any exotic you want, so you can have whatever stat combination you could normally get on an exotic and just use the legendary skin, so yeah, condition damage can be on a legendary.
I tend to agree. The way the market is at the moment, I see no reason to craft.
Mats are too expensive, products are too cheap.
I expect this will change over time, however.
But I have found crafting a disappointment… I simply have not been able to keep up with my level. Too many mats are needed.

Where did you get all the annoying blue mats from? Did you buy them?
i don’t get crafting at all in this game.
