Candidate Trials T4
SD engineer basically oneshots the runners. you dont want to hear that i guess, but its actually easy :P
to be exact, you only need your beloved zerker gear and this lovely build: http://www.guildwars2guru.com/topic/84143-build-lets-rock/
edit: fogot to say that i love the trials. there cant be enough content that cant be beaten by everyone. i dont care about how or with how much effort. another great thing delivered, anet!

Seems like the old GW1 design philosophy. “coordination and communication” disguisng massive hp and damage. Thats not a tactical fight and was the sam bizarre reasoning behind bounties which have well documented issues.
The ethos behind this is fine tho – the sep achievements, the elite challenge. The design is just lacking here though. The answer needs to be more than just “zerker”
As always, I broke agro if I got any, again, even if it ment loseing supplies.
Whenever I run far away to break aggro, the enemies do not run away from the spawn points. Instead, they just stand nearby where the aggro was broken. Thus, at a certain point (~5:30 left), I can’t safely attack plunderers at their spawn points.
Have you ever experienced this and, if so, how did you remedy it?

It happened to me a few times, the best thing to do is when you run back, run all the way to the water then back. Try to line of sight them with the other rocks, if you can. This is where the thief shines because I found if I went invis, it helped make them run to the middle.
I hope that helps!
~Edit~ Also I want to add that after a few times, you will notice 2 mobs, other than plunderers, spawning close to a plunderer spawn. Try to give them a second to run off before you try for the plunderers. Playing a Glass Cannon build you can drop them on the return, but it is very hard to recover if you drag a group of vets to the spawn point.

^What BlackIsleDragon says above pretty much sums up my solo strategy as well.
And here is a vid of me doing this on my Zerker Mesmer (no treasure taken xD):
Used your method and it worked. Feels good to get it done
I used traited mantras to get 3 of each, and higher dps when mantras are up. All Power and Precision and Greatsword for maximum range.
After touting the virtues of build diversity with their big balance patch, it’s frustrating and disappointing that ArenaNet throws in achievements that pretty much can only be obtained if you’re full zerker + immobilize. I’m all for difficult content, but this is ridiculous (as is the response we received).

Awesome – that’s great!! (Also, I just realized that my healing skill should have been Mantra of Recovery as that would add another 4% damage due to the ‘Empowering Mantras’ trait)

It is meant to be done as a group with a lot of builds/gear combos and group compositions. Not easy by any means but can be regularly beaten with reflects and/or blinds, weakness, pulls, properly used combo fields and finishers. Just requires some basic group coordination and understanding of class skills and game mechanics (which most pugs don’t have. I have to explain combo fields to new guildies like every other week.) There is a video in the thread somewhere of a group completing it without much trouble by killing everything.
However, if you choose not to enjoy the content as intended, you may gimmick the system solo, but only with specific builds and gear. Anet has graciously still allowed us to solo it rather than add automatically aggro all mobs to the player. As they say, “creative use of game mechanics”.
As for difficulty of the achievement, if it is too hard for you to obtain T4, there is already an easy mode for you. Its called T2, and you even get an achievement for completing it.
The only complaints I have with the trials is having to do the whole sequence twice, one for each candidate, that sometimes the achievements are bugged, and that they didn’t reset the achieve for people who exploited prior to the patch.
~300 2-3 bag runs at T4 now, still sitting at just 2 skins.
This is beyond rare anet.
Has anyone here actually gotten the Aetherized weapons from:
1. A tier lower than T4?
2. From the 1st or 2nd loot bag?
I was one of the most vocal critics of the difficulty of T4, but I’ve managed to beat it, and I’ve done it five times in total. This is mostly because it’s genuinely not fun and mastering it was no fun, not because it’s so hard.
No matter what class and build you use the most important thing is: there is an invisible line that separates safe areas from the agro zone. Imagine an invisible line starting from the left spawn, going to the middle spawn, then going to the small pile of big pointy rocks on the right. As long as you don’t go past left spawn, mid spawn, and rocks on the right, you will not take agro. This allow’s you to freely gank the plunderers on the left and middle without any risk. For the right side, you can stand on the pointy rocks and use ranged attacks on the right plunderer. You can also use pull skills (Scorpion Wire on my thief) to bring them over to the rocks, then use melee without taking agro.
Once you get used to this you will get a feel for a pattern of killing plunderers, like left, right, middle, etc. Once you get comfortable with spiking down the plunderers as they come and go without taking agro then victory will be within reach.
we’ve all seen what happens in games where there’s no disadvantage to taking your pants off.

Yes, both times I got mine were from a 2nd loot bag

So what exactly do you do with that build? I’ve got a lvl80 engi, but don’t ever use the goggles or the tool kit.
I guess I’ll have to try tomorrow either to solo it with a warrior (gs/rifle, but I don’t know what traits to use), that thief (d/d) build up a few posts, or this engineer one. Which one is the easiest to do this with? (I don’t really want to buy 3 sets of even green zerker armor)
Please give us a keyring…

I’m still trying to do T4, but so far can’t win, did it around 100 times and no luck, i think the problem is i only have 1 character lvl 80, a necro and dont seem to be the best class for big and fast damage. Any advice for a necro trying to solo?
@liefbread.9513
You made it with Necro class? If so can you explain your build?
Thx!
I managed to finish it with a zerker warrior. Axe/mace and rifle. The key is to let plunderers go if they spawn at the same time as other mobs. And the fastest way to lose aggro is to dive in the water left of the left plunderer spawn. The trick is to kill the right plunderer as fast as possible, usually 2-shot and run back (tremor or bolas then eviscerate and double-chop to finish it off). Hope it helps.

Well I managed to scrape through Tier 4 of Kiel previously but last night I two manned Tier 4 Gnash and got a perfect. Not a single gold was taken. We were a full Zerk Engi and the other guy was a Thief. Given the thiefs utility I guess he could have probably soloed it without me. Glad to have both of these out of the way but just wanted to let everyone know my experience with it. Hope that helps.

So how do you do it as an engineer?
Please give us a keyring…
i will pay 10 gold for someone who want to do this for me (eu servers)
you all know the good old gw1 times?u could do everything at 2 ways:
1. you got a farm build with a special group/way/solo.
2. you did it without any farm build (slower) but u did it.
both ways were able to finish. both worked very fine.
now:
1. there is a glitch at the first 1-2 days (50-90% will do it at this way)
2. there is the one op class with the one item build that can do it (50-70% play it)
there are some people without this class who want to do it without any bug using, who want to do this at a normal and working but hard way…with a good group…and chances….imbusibru

Honestly the Thief did most of the work. He wire pulled the plunderers and every time we got aggro he either mass stealthed us both or ran away if it was on cooldown. We just had to pay attention to which side was coming back with gold. I’m not sure on his build but when he hit them he hit hard. We’re talking he could almost 2 shot them. With me it was even faster kills. Him and I did Kiel only letting 1 or 2 get through and Gnash perfect. I believe he’s actually just helping people finish it before it goes away.
Tried running Day Trooper’s build and strategy with my Mesmer, but I can’t even pass T3, let alone T4.
Is anyone willing to help me? I’d really like to get both CTs done before it’s over
can not do t4, not elem or mesmer full zerk =(
Too hard and not fun. Arenanet, really no fun there.
Very bad and stupid part (t4) of event.
imho
(edited by Yury.3081)
If ArenaNet wants to see how a “defense” mission should go, they should ask their devs who happen to play Warframe.
except warframe is an FPS lol !!!!
Except do I even have to say that’s not the part to focus on?
Anet bungled a temporary content, and instead of doing something about it tells us that it was intended. “And, oh, very sorry that other people used a bug earlier and managed to complete the content. We’re not going to do anything about it, though.”
What a joke. “Exploit early and exploit often” will be the new mantra of the player base.
Done the trial solo after like 20+ tries

It really suck that when the time I thought out a team build to tackle candidate trial.Seem’s no one really care to give it a shot because of how people perceived difficulty(very large enemy health pool).Thats quiet a waste for a chance for the skin.

It’s unfortunate that there’s so many complaints here. It comes down to “entitlement”, since hard content means effort, and there are players who just want to finish achievements as easily and quickly as possible.
Guild Wars 2 was based off the idea that you can’t just zerg ever single event to win. T4 Trials are an example of this. You have to use skills like pulls, blinds, blocks, etc. Mashing the 1 button won’t get you anywhere here, esp. with uncoordinated groups who don’t prioritize targets.
This is hard as heck, and I’ve only managed to beat it once (with Bronze). Hard content is hard. Learn from your mistakes, and experiment with build setups. You get stunned a lot? Bring a stun breaker. Plunderers moving too fast? Slow them down with mines or control skills. Unable to try different approaches to hard content? Queensdale is that way —>

I’d love to hear how u do 2hit the runners? I am zerker warri too and need with extreme luck 3-4 hits and normally about 6-7… I know where and when to stand but i totally lack on damage to kill them fast enough… dunno how i should do it. (Might need add that Warri is my 3rd char and I am not that into it… but still its way too few damage even for a proffession noob)

No, it comes down to poor game design. This is a failure of a horde mode. People are beating it by exploiting game mechanics, not fighting wave after wave as you should in a horde mode. Wanting content that is conquered by strategy and teamwork not soloing/exploiting game mechanics isn’t entitlement.

The vast majority of the few people who have beat T4 have done so by soloing and camping spawn points. That is NOT how a horde mode is supposed to function.

Candidate Trials is broke and has been since the beginning. This is not how a horde mode is supposed to function. Also, you’re just another elitist and no one thinks you’re special for beating this since it can be beaten if you exploit game mechanics. So don’t break your arm patting yourself on the back and don’t strain your neck looking down on others who want a horde mode that works like it is supposed to.
T4 isn’t broken. It’s hard. If you can’t do it, then you’re one of the people who wasn’t meant to complete it.
I’m glad Anet made content that wasn’t supposed to be done by everyone. It shows that they care about all gamer types, not just the vocal minority who wants easy mode.
i just gave up.
Isn’t fun anymore.

Its broken. Complete it (with video) of it by staying by the first mate (of either candidate) and then you can say its not broken. The people completing T3/4 are not even completing them the way they were/are supposed to.

There are different ways to complete this. If you just want it done, stay far back and prevent the Plunderers from stealing the treasure. If you want good loot drops, kill as many enemies as possible, while saving the treasure. One way is easier. The other is more challenging and rewarding.
Just because you can’t do it doesn’t mean it’s broken. It means it’s hard. I’m one of those who enjoy hard content, but will also get frustrated if I can’t win. It’s the OCD in me. Once I finished the Evon T4, I never attempted it on Kiel. I know my limits.
I want to give it a go, but unfortunately there’s no way I can do it alone with my Guardian (I have only that character well-geared at the moment). And I haven’t find a good team that lets me get across T4 yet.
Hell yea I got it… epic close but who cares
Thx on all Warriors posting that I would need axe/mace.. kitten this Greatsword, from now on I know Warri a bit better xD
I am willing to try duo with any frustrated guy just to give the community some support (no guarantee but atleast i know it)
Hello i completed T4 a few hours ago and i wanted to share the build i used to do it. I took most of it from this thread.
Class: Warrior
Gear: Berserker with Superior Rune of the Scholar.
Weapons: 2h sword (Superior Sigil of Justice) and rifle (Superior Sigil of Intelligence). The sigil of intelligence isnt a must but was good to be sure i crit in hard situations.
Traits: not the best ones but worked.
30: II, IX, XI
0
0
10: II
30: II, VI, XII
Skills: here i picked skills that help me regain adrenaline as fast as i could.
Healing Surge – Berserker Stance, Signet of Fury, Signet of Might – Signet of Rage
Consumables:
Dragon’s Breath Bun and Powerful Potion of Outlaw Slaying
Tactic: i used this video as reference.
I stay back, then recharged adrenaline and used the rifle Kill Shot (F1), at max adrenaline, to kill the Plunderers. If the build is right, you should kill them with one shot. Follow the video to see when the other mobs come out, most of the time is better to kill the Plunderers when they come back, at least after the 5:30 mins when the ones at the right start to spawn.
I used the 2H sword over the plunderers only when was needed, also used it to kill the mortars (which isnt needed but helps to build adrenaline) and to change from one weapon to the other to get the 100% crit chance.

I see warriors and thieves have here the advantage. Unfortunately for Guardians there seems to be no way we can do it on our own, not to say I was expecting some team fight, rather than soloing it. :/
@Knight – on the surface it may seem that thieves and warriors have an advantage, but I bet any class can do this provided they use the correct weapons/skills/traits/etc.
For instance, you mention you are trying this on Guardian – the great thing about that class is the GS skill #5 which can be used to pull the plunderers right to you. Use that efficiently and I’m sure you’ll eventually be able to do this – and I’m sure there are vids out there of Guardians completing this using that approach.
I didn’t think I would ever finish this either – until I watched other’s vids and then went in numerous times to figure out a setup I was comfortable with. As the saying goes ‘practice makes perfect’
(Yes, yes, I know there’s a ton of threads like this, but may as well add another to the mix since this is definitely wrong)
And each day I have been looking for group after group trying to complete Candidate Trials t3-t4, and so far I haven’t been able to complete it once, let alone the twice you need for the achievements. I’ve done every single event achievement to date, and I have nearly 10000 achievement points, but these just cannot be done. I’ve gone at this from every angle across 6 different professions, tried PUGs & coordinated groups of every party size, tried to do most of the specs from various forum threads, I’ve tossed money for gems to see if that could sway my luck. Nothing works.
So far the best strategy we’ve had was to take advantage of the game mechanics by camping spawns and running away from aggro instead of actually playing the minigame, but there’s just way too many mobs with way too much HP (I think its about time to fire the guy in charge of setting HP values, he didn’t refine his work in the main game since launch and he sure as heck can’t get it right on additional content releases). Looking back on how much time I’ve sunk into failing this only to be taunted with pathetic Junk-tier rewards (sums up the entire game’s loot reward system in a nutshell may I add), as well as all of this new content I’ve missed simply because of this brick wall is incredibly annoying and feels like a game breaker for me.
Difficulty should not be just in numbers, Frizz was a difficult fight until you learn it and then it was fun. Mai Trin was an incredibly difficult fight until you cooperate as a team. I thought you learned this but you always take steps back every update.
Now that I’ve cooled myself down by typing all of that, perhaps this thread should serve to help match people together to get these darn achievements done.
Who else needs this done still (or just wants to help) and which server are you on?
Soloed it with an Engineer.
Edit – If you knew there were threads like this already you should have posted in one of the ones already made.

The problem there is that you are trying to do it in a group. I tryed too, and couldnt. I would love to do it in a team but for most players that isnt an option if you want to complete that achievement. To do it alone is the best way, and should stay back, where they spawn to do it. Try to dont get aggro, when the mobs spawn run away that way they dont see you, then go back and kill the plunderers when they go back.
I finished the achievement and i think this event wasnt very good. If they want put things that not so many can achieve, at least make them permanent, bcs at the end isnt about be skilled or not, is about to have the time to play and gold to make new gear to do it.

And the fastest way to lose aggro is to dive in the water left of the left plunderer spawn. I usually 2-hit with eviscerate fully charged (and it crits) plus double-chop or auto-attack. Mind you I’m using Potion of Outlaw Slaying and Dragon’s Breath Bun. Sometimes tremor + eviscerate does it.
EDIT: first hit only eviscerate damage and traits.

I just finished both my T4 trials, after many many different strats and classes. The only one I had success with was my Thief.
Full Berserker, All Exotics, D/D, Build is the picture, along with the skills
What I did was I stood next to the left portal. Usually you will get 5-7 kills at that portal from the start. Then a plunderer will spawn at the far right portal. I did not worry about him right now because chances are I would have agroed. Instead I stayed and killed any plunders that spawned between the Left and Middle while I waiting for the Right plunderer to return. When he gets close to his portal, I would start heading in range for Pull. I would pull him before he threw the bag, then kill him. After, I would kill any returning plunders and continue to wait around the Left portal. I never ventured out, not even if it ment loseing supplies. I always pulled the Right plunderer on his return, not on his way out. It was more benificial to kill the others as they spawned and the Right when it returned.
As always, I broke agro if I got any, again, even if it ment loseing supplies.
I hope that helps some of you.
Great minds think alike I used identical traits and skills except for Signet of Shadows instead of Blinding Powder. And I used Masterwork gear (except for main dagger) because I couldn’t afford good gear. But even when we both used different skills we were of the same mind to try and avoid agro. As you already said that is the key to success, avoiding agro on left/mid, pulling right.
we’ve all seen what happens in games where there’s no disadvantage to taking your pants off.
Unfortunately for Guardians there seems to be no way we can do it on our own, not to say I was expecting some team fight, rather than soloing it. :/
Done it solo on a guardian post-patch. You will need to invest in berserker gear though.
(Much to some personal annoyance, I preferred the pre-patch version that gave the control aspect of the trinity more importance, as opposed to the all-damage meta that already exists for dungeons. But one adapts in practice to the situation at hand.
I would have also liked to try the team-based coordinated damage/support version, but the damage was already done and PUG mindset fixed a certain way from the early days. Less than two weeks is insufficient time for the strat to evolve again and diffuse to the masses.)
Berserker everything, with ruby orbs.
Traits:
Zeal 10: II – Fiery Wrath
Radiance 30: VI – Blind Exposure, X – Powerful Blades, XI – Right Hand Strength
Honor 20: II – Superior Aria, VIII – Empowering Might
Virtues 10: I – Unscathed Contender
Use scepter. F1. Then immobilize, smite, autoattack plunderers to death. Do it only on or near their spawn points to minimize aggro. The best is catching them 1 second away from the spot where they will toss their treasure – giving you the immobilize + treasure-toss animation time to let smite and autoattack do their work.
I took either a second immobilize (Signet of Wrath) to deal with the later stage where multiple plunderers are in play, or the charr racial Shrapnel Mine for a trap-based cripple. Save Yourselves and Contemplation of Purity were used to break aggro and clear conditions.
Watch Liefbread’s video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-cuVYN7TS9o) to see the range of movement you have. Mostly stick to left and middle, extending only just far enough to catch the rightmost plunderer.
Break aggro quickly, and let veterans wander to the end whenever possible. Give up the right plunderer if 2-3 vets spawn with it and you still have treasure buffer, it will be easier later if you let them wander off first – without a long range pull, guardians can pick up aggro more easily with an errant blue projectile flying in some veteran’s face.
You have two tries to get the plunderers, once when they spawn, and when they come back with treasure again, so if the first opportunity is not good, don’t keep attacking and pulling aggro.
More longwinded elaboration here:

I’ve run more than 30 people through this event, I have run this event a total of more than 300 times. I have seen two aetherized skins drop, both in the first 100. Since then I’ve seen a WHOLE LOT of white weapons drop, warhorns, pistols, torches, axes, rifles, some blues, some greens rarely enough, LOTS of aetherized scraps.
BUT NOT A SINGLE other weapon. Can I get some Anet confirmation that these skins do still drop after that patch? Are all these white items I’m getting supposed to be skins and I’m just getting shafted by a bugged patch??
is there anyone kind enough to help me with t3 and t4?
Same message here as Evon support thread: If someone can help me complete Evon T4 on Piken Square I’ll turn my roughly 300 tokens in for Evon (and even promise to get a support bundle). Otherwise they go to Kiel. Look up Taun Whitemane.
Edit: Also if I get a single thief/warrior running this for me I’m paying 5 gold for this but only on a succesful run
(edited by Northlander.4619)
Just solo’ed it using Nadesh’ build setup for zerker warrior. But if you “do” follow his, that signet of intelligence on the rifle is very crucial to get the right side plunderers.
