Q:
Do our votes counts at all?
A:
It’s a pirate election, not a democratic election. It’s based on a show of support (who receives the most support tokens) rather than just who has more individual supporters. Players can vote multiple times, and there might be dirty tricks during the election. I doubt the Captains are restricted from buying votes, or messing with the process of submitting support tokens. They might even “allow” violent attacks to target their opponent if necessary.
It won’t be a “you get one vote, the winner has the most people supporting them”…more of a “whoever has the most support tokens wins, regardless of how many support them”.
If I remember correctly, he said that these were not American elections. And he went on to explain that the contestants might have a few dirty tricks up their sleeves.
I don’t remember him implying that players’ votes didn’t count; on the contrary.

It is not a democratic election, since everyone have multiple votes based on how much they play and what they play.
And as have already been pointed out what he actually said was that it was not an American election, not that it wasn’t democratic.
American != Democratic.

“Democratic” only means that it is a rule by the people, i.e. that there is elections at all. The word itself does not define that everybody has to have equal votes….

were not American elections.
2008 census figures: 206 million were Elligible to register.
146 million were registered at some point & could vote.
actual turnout: 131 million. (in a country of over 315 million residents)
2012 turnout: 121 million.
Basically this proves that their GW voting system for this event is superior and more relevant than American “democracy” currently is.

They’re not democratic in the sense that each person is not limited one vote. If I recall, what was said was that since this is a pirate town, many dirty tricks are allowed. The so called “Support Tokens” we’ll be using on each candidate might be tracked on their end and count as votes for either candidate. We’ll just have to wait and see until the intricacies are released. Unless they already have and I missed them :P

They’re Pirate Elections and they’re supposed to be rigged. We’re the ones rigging it by throwing in excessive amounts of votes from a single person, and there’s supposed to be shady stuff beyond that as well as part of the storyline I guess..
Well, despite touting democracy, the US is a republic, so we vote for people to vote for us, as opposed to popular vote, which is what a real democracy uses. So Im ok with it not being an “American democracy” aka a republic.
Pirate elections were never rigged. If one vote was rigged, it was immediately revoted.
Also, about the democracy in piracy, check this link: http://mentalfloss.com/article/23673/democracy-high-seas-how-pirates-rocked-vote
So, I don’t really think ArenaNet understands the democracy in piracy. :s
Do your votes count? Statistically, no, but the thought, especially thoughts posted on the forum ( >:D ) , count.

I remember the republican primaries. The dirty tricks there surpass anything arenanet can come up with. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o_WBo4sfmi4
These are “dirty” tricks. It’s all in good fun, after all…
