Losing money on Moa Racing due to a bug.
The betting works in a similar way to events. If you leave the area (the Lion’s Arch map), the event has no way to give you the rewards.
Unfortunately, I can’t see ANet adjusting this system either, because that would lead to a situation where players would immediately leave the map if they saw that their moa was losing, getting the money refunded to them, resulting in risk-free betting. The only thing to do is to avoid betting on days when your connection is spotty, I’m afraid.
I can understand that, but this is absolutely nothing to do with my connection. It’s to do with the fact that ArenaNet has yet to acknowledge that the problem is on their end and not on the end of the hundreds, if not thousands of people that are experiencing this issue, and have been since launch.
It just feels like a matter of being cheated for something that’s not the consumer’s fault to begin with.
i bet on a moa, vent out of the event area for some seconds (not Lions Arch) came back, my moa won, but i got no price.

Tigg’s conversation does warn players that if they leave the area they forfeit their bet or any possible winnings. I’m sorry that you experienced a disconnect after playing a bet.
I would like to know two things:
- If you place a bet and then leave the zone, fair enough. I don’t really understand how that would keep Tigg from sending you a letter, but meh. But when you’re back in the event area by the time the event finishes, you should get credit… not so that people can port in and out of the event – the races aren’t long enough to make it worthwile to sit through several loading screens anyway. But it would allow someone to get back in after a disconnect.
- Other dynamic events reward you even when you walk away, so why the change? What is the reason behind this decision?

DCing isn’t “leaving the area”!
Any action taken by the game as a result of a DC which is the same as that taken as a result of an intentional action by a player is a BAD THING and shouldn’t be in the game, ESPECIALLY if it means players forfeit items or cash.

I had the same problem in Southsun – I lost my settler’s bugg every time I DC’ed (often) or joined my friends in a different overflow. I could always get the buff back (and it was free and a nice bonus anyway) but only if I ran to a settlement and back, so in some cases when I was on the other side of the map, that just wasn’t an option for me and I went un-buffed for a while. I wasn’t super impressed by the implementation, but it wasn’t the end of the world either.
When half a gold is involved, however, it’s different, and I certainly would have taken this into account when implementing the Moa Racing mechanics.

I disconnected during a race. When I logged back in, I had three vouchers waiting in my mailbox as the moa I had bet on came in second. So it seems to work just fine for me.
This is from a little over 24 hours ago, by the way.

I lost 50 silver due to a disconnect.
I don’t have that much gold on my account, but it’s not too hard to earn another 50 silver by selling the reward items from the various meta events around the world. Anyway, while it’s annoying to have lost the money, I had a 40% chance of losing it on the races in the first place.
To decrease the chance of disconnecting after I’ve bet, I just make sure I place my bet right before the race starts now (the logic being that there will be less time where my money is on the line).
Same here got disconnected for inactivity while betting on Moas.

You missed the point “network issues still haven’t been fixed after 8 months” and it’s mostly due from on your end and not all on on our end or our isp. It’s obvious when the players only have problems with certain game/s and not other games they play rules it out where the problem is.

I’ve noticed there’s a bug involving the Moa racing, where upon placing a bet, if you happen to disconnect or get logged off between the time you placed the bet and the end of the race, your bet is automatically forfeited and the money is not returned to you.
Considering network issues still haven’t been fixed after 8 months of forum posts, this is just poor programming to say the least.
Anyone else been experiencing this issue?
Sorry, that does suck, but I’m unclear how your networking and connection issues are ANet’s fault? 8 months of forum posts from people with unstable connections also doesn’t put it in their hands. Most people I know, including myself, don’t even have lag, let alone stability problems. If it was on ANet’s end there wouldn’t be any way to avoid it, which means it can’t be.

Even GW1 had network issues for the first year before it got sorted out by Anet. You can’t always blame people’s connection after they have their isp come out and run test on their connections etc and all test come fine. Sure the web is complex with many factors can cause network problems. A huge part of it has to do with how good the network code is and how good it’s optimized as well the bandwidth & hardware it runs on.

Ignoring the empty PR reply of, “It’s working as intended”, here’s more to the point: Why is it so important a player is in the area for the end of the race?
Aside from limited coding time and unforeseen bugs you couldn’t fix before the event, there’s only one reason to prevent refunds from disconnecting or leaving the area, and that was mentioned earlier in the thread. The fix to that is simple: The bet is already in the system, so pay out or keep the money depending on the result of the race. No need for the player to hang around, the results (win or loss) can be mailed.
Why is this an issue? Personally, I’ve experienced more random disconnects playing GW2 since Dragon Bash has been live than I have since GW2 has been launched. It’s not my internet connection, as I can flawlessly stream Netflix and load up any webpage quickly. I also have no issues playing online FPSs or any other MMOGs. Because of this, I don’t really want to bet on these races and lose 50s due to a disconnect. I suppose I can wait to see if they clean up their network code, but an answer of “It’s working as we planned it, sorry for your loss” just doesn’t cut it for me. sighs

This came up while I was writing my reply. Sometimes it’s not our connection’s fault either. As I stated above, I’ve rarely had disconnect/lag issues playing GW2 from launch until Dragon Bash. After DB went live, I disconnected 3 times within 30 minutes while running around popping holograms, with 15-20 second skill lag. Wondering if it was my system, I pinged a few random servers, tracert’d, etc, and found no lag in my connection. I even loaded up a couple FPSs and MMOGs: no lag.
A few nights later, I jumped back into GW2 and started, in a completely different zone, to pop holograms again. Same thing: disconnected twice within about 15 minutes, laggy skills, etc. I then switched zones and ignored the holograms: no lag, no disconnects for 45m to an hour of playtime. I went to a few holograms, popped them, and the skill lag started up again.
I can’t tell conclusively who’s completely at fault, but the evidence I have so far suggests that this Dragon Bash event is the cause for a lot of my lag/disconnects.

I’ve often wondered this myself. It’s a fact of all events. If you leave the area before the end of an event you forfeit the event. I don’t think this should be so. If I was there for everything and acheived enough to be concidered part of the event, whether I leave the zone or not I should get credit for it.

You know, I never think of it, but you’re right. I completely forget that it works this way for all events in the game. I do wonder why you don’t get credit for it: I suppose it’s a programming thing. I don’t have any experience with coding/working with databases, but it would be nice if you gained credit for the event if you helped out with it, regardless where you are when it finishes.
I suppose it could be exploited a bit for farming, but couldn’t they just attach DR to it? shrugs I don’t know.

So as to make sure that people actually see events to completion and don’t just tag an event and run. Which they do already and they’re trying to stop. This would just encourage the behavior.

Actually, disconnecting is actually “leaving the area.” Your character isn’t present in the area when you log off. Having said that, I can see why that wouldn’t necessarily be clear since you’re in the same area when you log in again.

An exception for this one does seem justified, especially if it’s sticking around post-Dragon Bash.
Other than that, though, there really isn’t anything that could be done about disconnects – ArenaNet can’t tell from their end whether it actually is a connection problem or you just yanked the cable on purpose. (Also, network outages don’t usually have much to do with programming.)

It`s silly that you have to be all the time withing the “meta” event circle. I was just exploring LA on foot and lost my money, even though I got back to the moa starting place before the race has finished (also the moa I placed a bet on won the race this time… guess what, no credit….)
