Moa racing too expensive for what it is
I have to agree. 50s seems pretty over the top. I’ve had two goes for a fail and a second place. Pretty much got my coins back on the placing but I started thinking about the potential for a run of bad luck and so I ran away.
I should add that I also enjoy the concept. Reminds me of work.

Welcome to Las Vegas.
I agree with your post. It is sad sort of affairs to make people gamble.
We’ll never know their true intentions.
C’mon all, it’s pretty simple. You have a mini-pet (helmed moa racer) that’s effectively being sold for in game gold, and that value has a luck factor tied to it. If you’re doing it to make gold, well, you’re not going to. If you’re doing it for the mini-pet then you’re doing it right.
I’m doing it for the achievement which is tied to the meta achievement, which is my main point. They’ve effectively tried to force gambling on us by making it one of the main achievements and that I don’t agree with.

I’m only going to chip away at it for the achievement. The pet isn’t for me.

I bet on two races and thoroughly enjoyed it, but no more for me. I agree, it is too expensive. Money is hard to come by in this game.
Remember, the Helmed Mini-Moa is only available throughout the Dragon Bash Festival.
Get it while it’s hot! =)
Its over priced….for a gold sink? Considering what it’s intended to do (ie remove excess gold from the game) I’m surprised it doesn’t cost more.
Sure 50s is probably not a problem for veteran player, but what about those new people who just joined the game and maybe even don’t have lv80 yet? there is even an achievement for it which is ridiculous and more like promoting RNG imo.

Are you sure? I know the moas aren’t going away…

Helmed Moa Racer Mini
You’ll only find this adorable helmed version of the moa mini during Dragon Bash! Purchase this mini with vouchers earned from the Moa Racing activity.
I read somewhere that after Dragon Bash, a different mini will be put in as the prize, but I don’t remember where. Might be speculation. The helmed one is definitely limited, though.

Huh… that makes me sad. I’ll have to ponder how badly I want it.
Too bad… I hadn’t checked the moa race out yet and just assumed that the betting currency would be the event candy, lol. Using coin will certainly curtail my interest.
How many time do you have to win to get the achievement?
3 times for the achievement, but you have to collect 125 “win vouchers” – that’s a few more wins… for the mini.

I see what people are saying about expensive etc but you can deffo make money on this.
I spent roughly 25-30 G and now have Mini Helmed Moa Racer… if i sell this on BLTC its about 40G at the moment. Thats a fair return.
Was gunna hold onto mini incase price rises after Dragon Bash… anyone any ideas if prices will rise after event?
But.. you could easily spent 100g without ever winning. That’s the problem with random.

You’re extremely unlikely to spend 100g and never win.
I got incredibly lucky with the achievement, my first 3 bets all came in first (same moa as well which makes it even weirder). I finally got the mini tonight, which took me 49 bets in total, or 24g 50s. (But then I got 80s back because I had some leftover tickets, so 23g 70s.)
The Wiki says the average is 57 games, or 28.5g but I’m not sure how they worked that out.
IMO whether it’s worth doing or not depends entirely on what you want out of it. It will never be a good way to make money (as many people said it’s probably a gold sink). But unless someone miscalculates when listing it or gets crazy lucky and gets the mini very cheaply (and the cheapest you could get it is 9g, if you won every time) it is the cheapest way to get the mini.

50s is pocket change. With the currency exchange, crafting material drops and quest/task rewards, we need it this high. Sorry, if you aren’t competent enough to make it, but Arenanet must focus on the majority.

The wiki does the math for you. How are you not sure? Once you have the 3 wins, you can just trade in all your tokens and you will realize that you didn’t actually lose a lot.

Ya know, if our characters had houses Anet could sell actual gold sinks for us to put in the kitchens/bathrooms.
I’m down 1 gold 50 silver betting on the birdies. That’s too much! I’d much rather bet 10 copper a run.

Oh yes, and I’m sure new players feel the same way. Obviously they are just incompetent at making enough gold to spend on Moa races while leveling up in a game they might not be too familiar with in time for the end of the event. Pocket change indeed.
Even new users starting off can make that money farming low-level areas. Incompetence knows not status.

Would have been nice if they did it in 3 tiers
5 Silver
50 Silver
1 Gold Coin
Higher the tier, the higher % chance to get a ticket and of course more $$$
Lower the tier, the lower % chance to get a ticket and less $$$
