Yes this is another complaint thread on the Captain’s Airship Pass.
For those who didn’t read the other thread: A lot of people got upset that the loss of Lions’s Arch represented the loss of the most useful and convenient hub for BLT, Bank, Crafting Stations, Mystic Forge, Skill Trainers and Vendors. It also had Asura gates to all the major cities. In its place we got two things, Vigil’s Keep (which does not have crafting stations, gate travel and far less vendors) and Havoc’s Heir Airship. The airship is a one stop shop for everything BUT costs 1000 gems for a lifetime pass, 1000 gems equals $12.50 in USD.
Those who (rather sycophantically) defended Arenanet made some of the following arguments:
You can just go to other cities:
Yes, but none of the other cities offer the same level of convenience as Lion’s Arch (in terms of number of services offered and proximity of services to each other, not to mention gate travel) , that’s why LA was consistently the most visited location. If you do a lot of crafting, or are trying to make a legendary or use the BLT a lot you absolutely know what I mean. Time is money and you will be losing a lot of time from this loss of convenience.
It’s part of the story/times change/you fear something new:
No. I love what they are doing with the story BUT when you take that convenience away and ask for money for its replacement, it is an OBVIOUS bait and switch.
Cashing in is not Arenanet’s intention:
Really? Then why did the 1,000 gem lifetime pass come with this new content as a “promoted item” in the gem store? To think otherwise is naive.
Look, I love this game and there’s much to praise Arenanet for, but i’m not just going to drink the Kool Aid either. Removing LA’s conveniences and charging $12.50 to get it back is wrong. It’s something I expect from Electronic Arts, not from Arenanet who by and large are the good guys.
Will I stop playing? Of course not! This represents an annoyance and a fairly pricey one at that but overall the game is still fantastic. I just offer this thread as a venue for people to raise their hand politely and say they don’t agree with this move and that they think Arenanet is better than this. Aside from this, the new content is awesome, love that they shook the game up this way, keep up the rest of the good work!

The only thing missing in Vigil Keep right now is the crafting.
1000 gems can also be measured in gold, not just USD. If it’s that important to you, you can probably afford it.

No, I have no idea what you’re talking about. Every other city has all the amenities of LA. The only thing they don’t have are the Dungeon vendors and gates to the other cities. Neither of which are actually relevant to most people who are looking for BLT, bank and crafting.
It’s part of the story/times change/you fear something new:
No. I love what they are doing with the story BUT when you take that convenience away and ask for money for its replacement, it is an OBVIOUS bait and switch.
You don’t know what the term Bait and Switch means.

Then don’t buy it. I got a pass from one of the event bags, if it really matters to you there are ways around it.

The only thing I will say is that I am rather disappointed that they moved everything except the crafting. There is even a section of Vigil’s Keep on the west side that is already set up at accommodate all the crafting, just like in Hoelbreck. They chose to go a different route, so whatever. I’m more interested in how things will be changed for the future since Vigil’s Keep is a temporary hub, not the final solution.

Patience. Vigils is a refugee camp, so it’s not really meant to be the new LA. Most of us are assuming there will be a new LA at some point with all it’s conveniences. It might be annoying but its just temporary. Hopefully.

I’m normally reluctant to propose anything about intentionality as confidently as you’ve declared “it is an OBVIOUS bait and switch,” but honestly I don’t see another good explanation for this. They could have easily added a laurel vendor and crafting stations to the Vigil Keep, but they didn’t. Okay, so maybe they forgot. Well, tons of people have mentioned these things specifically in another thread, which has received dev attention, so we know they’ve been made aware. Since that time, there have been new patches to fix bugs, but they haven’t added this stuff to the Vigil Keep. I don’t get it, and I really don’t see an explanation that fits better than cash grab.

The only thing missing from Vigil Keep that was in LA are the crafting stations. But truth be told, LA was not convenient for crafting anyway. I’ve always done my crafting in Rata Sum because the crafting stations are closest to the bank & TP.
There are asura gates to all major cities in VK, just like they were in LA. And if you go thru the LA portals that’re in the major cities, they take you to VK.
Even if LA is gone for good, the Vigil Keep is a hastily thrown together refugee outpost (in game terms, not developer terms). Give Tyrians a few weeks/months to recoil from the sudden attack on LA, fight Scarlet, and begin a new city. Give it time and we might see a new city to replace LA, the expansion of the various Order headquarters, a new push into Southsun that results in the creation of a new grand city. Or maybe Anet is just sick of everyone afk-ing in one place and has plans to make all of Tyria more appealing to visit.
You can’t whine about inconvenience when there’s very little inconvenience and Anet offers you TWO ways around it. Buy the unlimited pass or open event bags and maybe you’ll get some 1-time use passes. I’ve gotten 3 so far and haven’t used one yet because VK isn’t inconvenient. The bank and TP are actually closer in VK than they were in LA. So are the asura gates.

Wouldn’t you rather they fix the bugs first so things work properly? I know I do. I’d rather the limited time events run smoothly and have to (gasp) walk thru the free asura gate to access a laurel vendor and crafting station.

Yap, it was only a matter of time, till ANet would somehow make money out of the popularity.
1000 gems for what was free less than a week ago. GG.

All the complaining on this gem store/drops naturally anyway item is over not having a slight convenience. Oh, the horror.
Somehow some of us go on playing, completely unaffected by a service offered in so many other locations the loss of its convenience in LA is nearly unnoticed. Adapt, move on. I save my complaints for issues I consider significant.

I’m ok with dispersing the services like this, hopefully it breathes some life into the racial capitals. In Anets position I would’ve skipped establishing services in Vigil keep and just went with those 5(6) pre-existing towns in the first place.
Pet peeve, people keep mentioning skill trainers as if that matters … it really doesnt. The only thing that matters out of the list is the MF, and that’s only because it was the only one outside of pvp-related areas. Hell, place the MF outside of a town atop a mountain where you have to fight your way past ringwraiths to throw in your trinkets. Beats the mundane recycling we had until now.

I love the new Vigil’s so far.
It’s a functional hub with everything within walking distance and – more importantly – the boys on the stairs outside of the bank in L.A; the ones who used to talk about genitals, Chuck Norris and legendary weapons in map chat, aren’t there.

Good things always end. LA was not making ANet any money. So it was going to change sooner or later. You have to think this is a free to play game and the devs work on whatever that makes money. Living story brings gems store items then the focus goes to that. Removing the convenience of LA makes money so lets go do that and so on….This is the sad truth of free to play MMOs.

Let us continue to make a big flipping deal out of nothing!
Oh no… You have to use the azura gates now (which are completely free…) or -GASP!- use a Way Point for a pittance of silver! The absolute /horror/ of having to actually move your character from one part of the game world to another…
The sky is falling… the end is nigh…
Pardon me while I go use my now completely broken Molten Pick and cry rivers of tears over how it doesn’t work anymore… because Anet rolled out the Watchwork pick… How could you ANET?! HOW COULD YOUUUU?!
/sarcasm off
Now that I have got that out of my system…
Have they included anything with the airship pass that you can not do in the game?
The answer is no.
For gods sake, stop trying to make mountain ranges out of molehills…

If the Mystic Forge is a problem, you have an alternative in your home world’s WvW borderlands – the amenities there are gathered pretty close together. If your world is highly populated they might not appreciate you taking up space for that, but you’ll know if there’s a queue

All of you complaining about it make me facepalm. Go to Black Citadel, Hoelbrak, Rata Sum, Divinity’s Reach, or The Grove if you need to craft. It’s not like there isn’t a portal that can take you to them. <_<

LA was a free travel all-in-one spot, a central hub on the worldmap and had all important NPCs/places.
So is Vigil Keep, thus the rest of your post is invalid. Oh wait… the crafting stations. They are missing. BUT I daresay that taking the portal to Rata Sum and doing the crafting there doesn’t take more time than doing the crafting in LA, since the crafting stations in LA were quite spread out and you had to cover some distance to the get items from the TP and/or the bank.
Actually, aside from the crafting stations, everything is much closer together in Vigil Keep than it was in LA. Thus I would almost call this a free INCREASE in convenience.
in Battle for Lion’s Arch - Aftermath
Posted by: lnguy.5127
The only thing I find valid about your post is not having crafting stations at Vigil Keep.
The other main cities actually do have the same level of convenience as old LA if not more. If you look at Rata Sum, The Grove and DR, all the crafting stations are close to each other and the BLT and the bank are on another level on top of them which has a WP right next to them. I find it faster to click on a WP (has no fee btw) in say DR to get to a crafting station or BLT/Bank than running from a crafting station to BLT in LA.
I usually hang out in Rata Sum because it has shorter loading time than LA and all the convenience are there with one click of a button.
The Vigil Keep is a temporary place for refugees right now, it’s not the “new LA.”
You mention having to run longer between crafting stations and BLT/Bank. And that time is money. So let’s assume that you are right. How much longer are we talking about? 3 seconds? 5 seconds? 10 seconds? How much money can you make in those time? You may lose some worth while money making time (say 30 minutes) if you run back and forth multiple times (say 180). But why on earth would you do that? When you craft something, it makes sense to calculate all the mats that you need and buy them all on the BLT and make ONE trip of picking up the mats and then craft them? Instead of running back and forth hundreds of time buying each individual mat (who does that?)
So if what you are saying is true about inconvenience, then you probably only waste a few seconds more which is not any worthwhile money making time. Or you are playing the game (crafting) very inefficiently, which is not really Anet’s fault now is it?

What If?
As part of Anet’s grand plan for 2014 a new city is born in a previously unavailable area of the map? opening up a totally new area, would the inconvenience of loosing LA as a hub not be worth a new area opening up?
None of us know what their intentions or much less their plans, but loosing LA to me is not a great loss considering all the other options we have for crafting, BLT, and Asura gates, it just amazes the kitten out of me how people clamor for new content and change, then when they get it they want the old stuff back, the LS is evolving, we are getting rid of Scarlet, and things are changing in a positive way.
I’m optimistic that we will have many more major changes to the game coming in the not to distant future it’s best to just sit back and try to enjoy the ride.

Wait. There is another City? I thought Lion’s Arch was the only City.
Ok to be serious, I had seen questions like this and my first reaction on such questions was a facepalm. ( We need a facepalm emote ).
Rata Sum is much better for crafting than Lion’s Arch. The only reason to stay in LA was the Forge and not the crafting.
And to be honest. All the unique things of LA are in the Vigil Keep. So nothing to worry about.

They have to know if another game grabs the heat of this one – and one will eventually – that they are cutting their own throats as many other MMOs have over the years…
It’s not just an annoyance – it’s saying to very poor and some very ill people who can’t come up with the gems that they have to be in “another place” rather than a central location like Lion’s Arch where people are rich and poor but there is no class distinction – none. Even that Legendary could have been built… and no one really knows and no one cared.
You want to move all the features to Divinity’s Reach, fine, but don’t just destroy Lion’s Arch, put a Aetherblade ship in the sky – who really are pirates, duh, and then tell us we have to pay to get up there or run around the map to find all those things where there won’t be the same people or the same feeling – ever.

The MF is only rarely used, even by heavy users. Did you spend your entire days crafting Ascended backpacks or something? Clicking on a different WP once or twice per day is should not be a serious issue for you, seeing how the rest of the game works.
Go to a different city, like Divinity’s Reach or Rata Sum, and enjoy the much improved layout and vastly shorter distances between the crafting stations, bank and trading post (you know, the stuff you regularly use and/or requires a lot of go between), compared to Lion’s Arch. There’s also the added bonus of much faster loading times and improved performance.
If you want to say that you liked how LA looked, that is an absolutely valid opinion. But please keep your nonsense to yourself if you decide to attach terms like “efficiency”, “convenient” or “quality of life” to Lion’s Arch.

I have to disagree with LA being the most convenient place.
Except for the mystic forge, Rata Sum, The Grove, and specially Ebonhawke (my personal favorite crafting place) all offer the same services than Lion’s Arch but much better organized and closer together. For example, heavily using the bank, guild bank and TP in Lion’s Arch meant moving back and forth between places on opposite ends of a rather large plaza and an extra street… or just having all three right next to each other in ebonhawke. Add the crafting stations that are on the opposite end in LA… or down the same street than the TP and banks in ebonhawke.
The portals are still working, and personally I don’t really know anyone that used them heavily once they got the waypoints needed to other cities in new characters.
BTW, you’re welcome to do your crafting in the grove, it’s much more beautiful and relaxing (IMHO, of course) than LA ever was..

I’ve always prefer DR to LA when it comes to crafting, using the waypoint up and down doesn’t even trigger a loading screen.
If by any chance you are using one of the closest stations it’s faster than LA, but even worst case scenario the difference is very little.
I got passes on the loot bags and I didn’t even used them, there’s just no need really.

No, we’re complaining that Anet has removed a feature from the game and is trying to sell it back to us as a microtransaction. That’s just scummy behaviour.
Are you listening to yourself? You’re complaining about not having a 1-stop area, when EVERY CITY IN THE GAME IS A 1-STOP AREA! That post of yours is so bad that well…
Please explain how I get directly from WvW to Rata Sum (or any of these other supposed ‘1-STOP’ cities) without paying waypoint fees, I must have missed a gate somewhere.

Take the asura gate in WvW that leads back to Vigil Keep, then take the asura gate in Vigil Keep to any one of the cities you wish to go to. Please tell me you didn’t know there was an asura gate in each WvW map that leads out of it. Please do, so I may shake my head and at least know this was caused by a lack of knowledge, and not true foolhardiness.

I don’t like what they did, but at this point I’ll imagine a story in which the LA government is so desperate for resources now that they chose to exploit adventurers in order to rebuild the city sometime in the future.

Personally I hated LA with a passion. If I go somewhere for crafting I go to black citadel drop some things off in the bank Black citadel. only thing that La had was dungeon vendors and mystic forge and those I rarely use.
you don’t need to pay real money into gem shop but the exchange rate is getting pretty high.

Honestly I feel people are being lazy if they feel that much of a blow from all this.
War is war and LA is gone for now. ALL other cities have everything LA had minus the mystic toilet and dungeon vendors which hey guess what, still exist in Vigil Keep. So it took you 5 extra second to run to the portal to DR or Rata Sum when you needed to craft from Vigil Keep. Big deal. Of all the things to complain about this has got to be one of the most ridiculous.

Since you seem not to have read my post properly I’ll bold the important part to make it easy for you.

It isn’t that it’s significant in itself, it’s just that taking a feature out of the game and then selling it back as a microtransaction represents the very worst of the free-to-play mentality, and shouldn’t have any place in a buy-to-play game or in an Arenanet game. It’s EA behaviour.

How to get directly from WvW to Rata Sum? Enter WvW from Rata Sum. When you’re tired of WvW, simply go to Character Select, reselect your character back into the game. You’ll be back in Rata Sum.

Go to EbonHawke. Has TP, Bank & Crafting stations closer than anywhere else if I remember correctly. No Mystic Forge though.

what you mean lost our main hub? Its all at the vigils base now. if anything its better now because its more compact now so less travel time between vendors.
