I have to agree.. light armor has been getting screwed ascended armor cost more, now there this back costs more. Did the devs look at how much this costs light armor users. The drop rate and the amount needed to make one cloth is so much worse then any of the others.. there is a reason cloth is 15gold + per one and ingots are half that. They need to make cloth cheaper to make.. cutting silk need in half would be a good start.. or cut in half the amount of cloth needed to make the items.

Yeah, it’s irritating. I know they originally made it require so much silk because of the overabundance of silk that wasn’t getting sold, but now that it’s, you know, fixed? They might reconsider changing the recipe to require less silk.

My facts are straight.. maybe you shouldn’t assume that people have all there crafting at 500, alright buddy… not everyone is a 500 crafter in everything.. and it still doesn’t change the fact that cloth is way way more expensive… this effects just not the back item but all ascended armor crafting costs.

Not everyone has a level 500 armoursmith or leatherworker….

I only really play on one character and he’s a tailor and jeweller. I have a 400 artificer/chef, but that doesn’t help a lot in this situation.

All three armour crafting profressions should function in relatively the same way, there’s no legitimate reason that is should cost SO much more for tailors.

Well, if “this one item” is valuable enough that you had to come whine about the price difference in the forums, then “this one item”, is valuable enough to level up leatherworker to 500. Besides, to get 500 leatherworking you need around 100g, which isn’t really that much. And you get achievement points.

I think all of the ascended recipes cost too much, not just this backpack. I can understand putting new materials in the game like bloodstone and dragonite, but to require so much of everything makes it quite expensive to craft anything. So much for making BiS stuff accessible to everyone. I refuse to waste my time and money on a single stat allocation for so many pieces.

People have to keep in mind that they can’t really balance stuff based on player-controlled things.

Yes, today it is much cheaper to do it with Leatherworker than with Tailor.
But what about in 1 month? Maybe the materials would cost much less and thus a lower requirement tailor recipe would suddenly become MUCH cheaper than everything else and so on.

I agree they can not control that pricing but they do control drop rates that effect that pricing. Silk and linen costs are so high and the amount of silk need is so large with the worst drop rate. You can not go mine silk or cut down tree’s for silk. It’s this issue that’s cranks the cost up for light armor crafters.

I love how my only ARMOR crafter is a tailor… Totally hit the nail on the head with that decision…. The problem lies in that leather drops WAAAAAAAAAY too much and cloth doesn’t drop enough, if they want to stabilize it a bit more they gotta cut the leather drop rate and shove some cloth in that now empty hole and they’ll balance out. ESPECIALLY since cloth is used for ALL crafting disciplines, and even more so as a tailor.

Awesome and thanks for the response. Currently I have tailor to 500 and yes, crafting the back piece through tailoring is steep to me but because things change constantly I’ll just hold off on crafting it till a later date.

In the meantime, I will slowly push another craft up due to price variance on this(and probably future content) but I have plenty of event materials currently and there is still lots of time for gathering extra materials to ensure I have everything needed when it’s no longer available. I really don’t care if I have the back piece first or even soon.

I view it as a lesson learned and something else to strive for. I have all crafting to 400 on multiple toons just never went higher because wasn’t super interested in doing so before and never really had a reason to want it. Now I do. Thanks again!

People have to keep in mind that they can’t really balance stuff based on player-controlled things.

I’d like to point out that the idea that the BLTP economy is “player-controlled” is only a half truth. Most players, especially those who play the item-flipping game, have at least a spotty understanding of the laws of supply and demand. This (one) factor definitely has player-influence, particularly when new content is released and players “have to have it right now.” The ascended armour release for instance, saw a huge increase in the cost of silk which has been steadily decreasing but remains at a steep price.

However we should not forget the entire slew of other variables that can artificially inflate or deflate supply and/or demand that players have absolutely no control over. Time-gated content creates a demand for things that would otherwise not be present*. Deldrimor steel ingots have balanced out their price at around 3-4g, until of course people started buying them for this time gated content. They are nearly 8g at the time of this posting.

The huge factor that I can humbly see as the cause of the discrepancy between deldrimor steel and the bolt of damask is the requirement of 100 silk…this is in turn dependent on drop-rates of silk from salvaging etc. This is something entirely controllable by Anet, from many different perspectives.

Tl;dr: The laws of supply and demand on GW2’s economy have a lot more to do with Anet than you might think because of crafting recipe requirements and drop rates (among other things).

*Note: I’m not intending to start a discussion regarding whether or not time-gated content is a good thing…the way I see it, there are pro’s and con’s, when your game is set up like GW2.

Your definition of casual may be different to other peoples.
During a University week I don’t even have the time to run a dungeon. I can spare maybe 1-2 hours in the week TOTAL. as in, maybe 30 minutes on a couple of days. People who have full time jobs can have the same problem.
- yes there are people who are students/employed who do play a lot – but their situation is not universal.

Also not everyone wants or knows how to play the trading post. A casual player cannot feasibly earn 100g a week through playing the game.

I’ve been playing since launch and only just hit 120g… Yes I have been spending as I earn on things for my character, e.g. Celestial armour, but it would take me a LONG time to get back to that amount, and as it stands that isn’t really enough to afford to craft this using Tailoring – it would be enough to craft it with Leatherworking. But I don’t have a leatherworker and the trip up to 500 would strip me of most of my gold just for a profession i don’t have much of a use for.

For a game we are supposed to be able to play our own way and is supposed to be geared towards casual gamers it is failing. They do a lot of things really really well, it’s disappointing to see them overlook something that generates such huge inequalities.

Not going to quote any one person in this thread but I do see a lot of people use the argument of “play how I want” or “I’m casual and can’t grind the gold to have that piece”

In my mind….a player does NOT need this back piece. Players can still play how they want…they just may not be able to look the way they want. There is a difference. The game, imo, is still 90% casual friendly but there is in fact an aspect of it for those with more time to invest in the game(Legendary weapons and various items that require time). This is where these armor sets and better looking items come from.

A casual player can acquire them but it will take more time, time they apparently do not have. This could be the busy schedule of the individual person or the game limiting how long an event lasts. The only thing I can say about it though is that these items and things people MUST HAVE are not intended for everyone to be wearing. They are incentives for those with more time on their hands or a goal a casual player can shoot for overtime. Sure, it sucks if you do not have the time but it’s not like you HAVE to have it in order to progress further into the game. It’s a vanity piece.

I’m an understanding person and I realize that grinding the items required during the event can pose an issue for those who have plans this week or next etc. And in those situations, there isn’t much that can be done. Events in a game come and go, it’s not a new concept.

I mention my method earlier about grinding the mats needed and crafting later when I can afford it and can spare the gold. Right now, the high cost is an issue for me. In the future it will not be.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but there isn’t a Light/Medium/Heavy version of the backpiece right?

Just craft it with a character who is an armorsmith or leatherworker. Problem solved there. You don’t need to do it with a tailor.

What if tailoring is all I got? This event is time limited and it is way too late to start levelling up leatherwork now.

Too late for what??
You can level leatherworking from 0-500 in under 2 hours!!

Sir, will you pay for my gold?

If you don’t have or cannot farm enough gold to level leatherworking, then you have more problems than crafting this back-piece, mate ..

Read properly ‘If you’re not a hardcore farmer, screw you.’

A hundred gold is A LOT to a casual player with a job a family and other responsibilities.

I’m a casual player and I make 100g a week. All you got to do is invest in the right stuff.

No you’re not, if you make that much a week you are either a farmer or a TP flipper. If you are a farmer, then you are NOT a casual player. If you are a TP flipper, you’re barely a player at all, let alone a casual one. Standing in front of the bank and tracking marketing trends is not playing the game, this isn’t Guild Market 2, it’s Guild Wars 2. No one bought GW2 to play a sick and twisted version of Monopoly.

I’m somewhere between casual and hardcore (depends how much time I have) and I’ve never had more than 80 raw gold on me. (I probably have quite a lot of gold worth of materials though, and granted, I do spend gold often). But really, you have to try fairly hard to make 100 gold a week. Only when I was farming for several hours every single day for my Mjolnir did I make that.

I would agree with this argument if this wasn’t a LS item. However you can only obtain the mats for this item for the next 2 weeks. Hopefully Anet can figure out what the prices for things will be over a 2 week period.

Also Anet did control player prices when they made bolts of silk take 50% more resources than the steel and 100% more resources for the damask over the deldrimor.

The price of the damask is pretty much exactly 150% more than that of the deldrimor which is the price that Anet set.

You seems to be under the impression that
1: They will be unobtainable after two weeks.
and
2: That you won’t be able to craft them after the event is over.

Doing a run per day in LA Under Attack will get you more than enough of the potential limited material (blade shard) to build and upgrade several of those things.

What does that matter?

So what it costs 5x more then the other crafters.. its ok you can wait longer and pay more because there is no time limit… what type of logic is that?

The logic in that is that if they mechanically made it require less material it could end up being massively unbalanced the other way around, seeing as material changes prices daily.

Yeah.. I leveled leatherworking just for this. Since I plan on making 2 ascended versions. (I previously only had tailor to 500)

I don’t like that I had to do it. However… it has made a sink for Elonian leather. It’s gone up in price a whole lot. I think that’s a good thing for the ascended materials market.

But yeah, now I have level 500 Leatherworking and no use for it lol

No that’s totally false. As other have stated all the armor crafting needs tier 7 silk making it’s more in demand then all of them. The mats needed, mainly 100 bolts of silk are harder to get and can not be farmed from crafting nodes. Combine more demand and a material that’s much harder to get and that is why it much more expensive to make.

Right now it’s already massively unbalanced. Unless you think that leather being 3 gold each vs cloth being 15 gold each is balanced? The silk bolts need to be cut in half to 50 bolts and it would help a ton to lower the costs. Right now its stupidly unbalanced against tailors in all aspects of ascended crafting.
