Q:

Hi,

It seems like dynamic events now have a karma scaling system in place. Instead of the typical 300-350 karma for a complete event chain, when the system kicks in, you will get about 10-20 karma per event. This is also with a Karma Boost active, so the actual rewards are probably lower.

Doing the whole Grenth temple dynamic event chain netted about 70ish karma total. Was this system implemented in the last patch? If so, why was it not documented? Also, with the current armour prices set to as they are, it requires about 180 dynamic events or so with the current prices. With this system in place, this pretty much prevents you from getting karma for this.

It feels like this system is in place to punish you from playing the game. Dynamic events in Orr are pretty much the end game at the moment, and I am thoroughly confused as to why there is a system in place that punishes you from playing the end game.

Any insight as to why this system was implemented would be appreciated.

You can go back to other zones and do event here. You still get much more karma, and it’s far easier to get gold participation.

Going to other zones has no effect on the dynamic event penalty. I’ve tried it several times, and completing events elsewhere exacerbates the penalty just as it would in the zone you started. The only way to reset it is to not do any events for 15-20 minutes.

I too would love very much to know why this was added and when it will be removed.

Doubt it will be because they seem to be fixated on an anti-farming crusade, despite it being at odds with their no grinding philosophy. Like you said its ridiculous when it costs 252,000 karma to get a full set of the temple armor anyway. When it costs that much what do they expect people to do?

To me decisions like this and the dungeon one, without any transparency or consultation are almost swtor like in terms of bad decisions. The people they are most hurting are the regular every day players and it only serves to make the player base angry.

And I have to ask what is the point of it? Are they trying to prevent an exploit?

It would be nice if they implemented a karma boost to counter-act the anti-farm scale.

Something that would give explorers a significant boost and makes the legendary weapon farm more enjoyable.

Something that would notify and reward those who go help with group events which have been all but abandoned in the middle zones.

Something that encourages players to play the game rather than spend 2-4 months of 16 hour days farming the same place.

This, pretty much it. As the op mentioned, it feels like were being punished for the way we want to level up. The dungeons are horrible right now with the difficulty/rewards scaling which forces casuals like me to try events which are scaled as well. At Sparkfly Fen, only a few events are being done due to the costs of using waypoints specially from the farther areas.

Unbelievable. Since launch, this company has made the worst decisions of any game company I’ve ever bought from. I didn’t play GW1, and I’m glad I didn’t. The friend that encouraged me to play did, and his daily disappointment and rage at these insane “fixes” is much worse than mine. My anger is just based on poor design, broken game mechanics, rushed release, poor testing and feedback, the oversights which basically destroyed the economy within a week of launch, and the kneejerk anti-gamer nerfs that have been dumped on the game consistently since launch.

This is the most anti-PVE game ever created in the PVE genre, but you can buy gold with a credit card, so i guess today’s generation of “gamers” is happy?

I understand limiting mindless mob farming, as it a) is not the way the game is intended to be played, b) it encourages players to participate in the farming if they wish to remain economically competitive, and c) it opens the door for bots. But dynamic events are the way the game is intended to be played; players should be encouraged, not discouraged, to participate in them; and they’re not bot friendly.

What is one to do in Orr when they hit this cap? Go afk for 20 minutes? Are events not the intended end zone gameplay? There’s literally nothing else to do in those zones.

I feel like this has to be a bug. It was probably intended to diminish returns of the same event being run over and over again, not the other way around.

If this isn’t a bug and they are actually diminishing returns on events now, then consider me dumbfounded.

Loot has a soft cap already, dungeons have a soft cap now, but giving events a soft cap? That just doesn’t make any sense. As others have pointed out, karma can’t be monetized, and neither can XP/skill points. Its estimated you need close to a million karma for legendaries, so that is the market events at 80 are going to be for. Making those players angry kills off most/all of the hardcore players. I can’t see this being intentional.

Honestly, I have not hit this myself. I have run with the “Zerg” in certain areas in Orr for maybe an hour before I get bored and move on to something else. I think that is the problem. Running the exact same events over and over triggers the Diminishing Returns system for Karma.

If you are following a “Zerg”, break from the pack every once and a while and do something else if they seem to repeating the same events over and over. If you are not following the “Zerg”, then make sure to mix up the events or do WvWvW for a bit.

This seems to be a trending pattern tbh, instead of Anet taking a few more days to actually look at what their changing or god forbid test something before putting it live on a server maybe think a bit before hand, they don’t tend to fix, they tend to break it so immediately the 0.1% of bots have to go find somewhere else to farm while wrecking the game for the other 99.9% of us.

So I think what would be most helpful is someone doing a Youtube video of them playing “normally” and showing how the rewards scale down.

I was in Sparkfly Fen the other day when one person was complaining about only receiving a minimal amount of copper and xp for doing events. He asked everyone if they were experiencing the same problem but no one was. I played there for about 50 minutes and I didn’t experience this scaling issue.

The Devs might be thinking the same thing so I think it would be helpful to your cause if you youtube everything and show what “normal” playing is for you. You probably want to start with a fresh max XP event then show how it has been scaling down.

If you do it again you have to start waiting again. Lately it seems like you have to wait at least an hour to be sure.

THIS. I think and hope this may be what is behind some of the recent changes and they’re not finished yet. They surely must discourage everyone just getting to level 80 and staying in the same place in order to farm events for karma to get their max level armor – that would be a crazy game design.

But ATM, if u really want to explore the world on one character you can only do so at the expense of Karma and other high level items. Also its all the wrong way around – the XP gain you get from anything & everything forces you up to level 80 so quickly that you have to explore at least half the map when you are already at max level – and despite the downscaling there is no real challenge, or reward, in doing that: so it just becomes an “achievement” for completionists.

So you should be able to make progress towards your max level armor, however you choose to play the game, not just by farming in high level areas.

that really screws the pooch on simultaneously getting mats for crafting a set of armor while getting karma for my support set off the temple vendors. is there a timeframe before you get punished does it start after teh first time you’ve completed it?

Don’t know when it starts as of today, but as of next patch, it starts when you buy the box.

Seriously, what do botters do? Log in all the time and expect gold, karma and XP. So, that has to be throttled. When you log in more than once a week, you don’t get any of the above anymore.

Now, I hear you complaining “but how shall we level without gold, karma or XP?” It’s a game, after all. You play it for fun not for gold, karma or XP. If you always need a reward to play, go away!

This is one of the most stupid changes you made Anet, what’s the point of doing events? They already give silly amounts of gold (and that’s ok since most gold comes from loots), but there is no other way to get karma.
Since you can’t sell or buy it I don’t see any problem in ‘farming’ it. Besides, if all events were currently working it would be better…

i just dont get why botters are so bad in this MMO, surely they would damage the economy a little bit because they can farm 24/7 where others cant but realy that would just lower the prices in the TP a bit which are high anyways, what else can t do much, a botter who got his nice shiny plate cant do more than i can, but please if i missed something enlighten me =)

oh an phooka, you too are running for a reward, its just not karma/gold/XP its fun, so why cant we just leave everyone hunt what he likes and wants to hunt?=) wouldn hurt you if they removed this strange restriction (stil dont get why such hard grinds are ingame as well with dungeons, funnyly enough i do not have a problem with farming for legendayrs, but this grin of the same dungeon and well i dont mind doing different events all the time but then please allways give me 20 karma or 350 for every event not just the first 350 and then 20 for the rest otherwhise i feel robbed ).

2-3 events usually before it kicks in, after which it affects all subsequent events (even in other zones, though some people don’t experience it at all, but it clearly is happening to others, myself included). No idea if it’s account wide, haven’t tested it since I only have my main.

On another thread on this someone said it kicks in after doing about 8 events in a 30 minute period. So if people are getting differing results it may be bugged.

Anet should disclose how the system should work however so we can at least know what is a bug. Their lack of transparency on this is not great.

The DE penalty doesn’t even affect bots. It’s doing nothing good and hurting legitimate players.

Looks like when a small portion of players (usually bad guys) did something bad, either exploit or farming, they tend to punish the whole player base severely. The price of tier 1 and tier 2 cultural weapon is a typical example that make them practically untouchable, thus causing a rare level 40 weapon can cost almost 1g in trade post.

Then we lost a lot of fun (for experiencing rare gear in early level) and received tons of frustration … this is bad.

I think the rewards, not just karma rewards, should be increased. As it is nobody seems to do DEs once they hit 80. And even when they do dynamic events it’s just so they can farm. You never see anyone doing the “collect x number of y items” or escort events.

Yes, the reward system needs some overhauling, I think. Currently there are so many different ways of getting blues and greens (market, karma, crafting, common drops) that they don’t function as valuable rewards for content. In most cases these items sell for 1c above vendor price on the market and even with gold being a bit tighter in GW2 than other games that’s an insignificant value.

I think they also need to work on the weapon upgrades on green items, especially armor sets. Many of the bonuses are close to useless. For instance even the most dedicated min/maxer isn’t going to carry scads of different weapons with bonuses against different species, such as grawls, ogres etc. So these upgrades (and other limited ones) are essentially valueless.
