It appears there are going to be a quite a few displaced norn and charr refugees relocated to Southsun Cove during the Frost and Flame living story. These refugees are going to, in all likelyhood, establish a camp or outpost in which to live. But I found myself wondering if refugees of the other races might, too, be relocated here in future installments of the living story. It would be cool to watch what initially starts out as a camp or outpost grow into a full-fledged town over time while also giving Southsun Cove some much needed content. Thoughts?

Lotro did something similar with a town called Hytbold recently. Not well implemented there, but I liked the idea. No reason this concept couldn’t work in GW2 as you say, especially if the players could contribute to it’s construction. I like Southson and this would give the island a real boost. They could easily wall of a section of the island that would be protected against the Karka.

Because the Consortium is handling the relocation of those refugees. They were the ones that tried to make Southsun Cove into a destination vacation resort, so it wouldn’t surprise me they’re using this as a means to get people onto that island.

Cool vacation: run and gun without getting any sleep for the rest of your life!

The Molten Alliance must be pretty bad if refugees want to live in Southsun Cove.

I thought they were giant tentacle va… nevermind. This will probably be deleted but it’s the truth!

Seriously though besides the Karka Event disconnects and such. The main event was the only real reason to go there. The karka are not fun to farm with bad rates on blood and there is a lack of anything good to do with karka shells or passion fruit.

Which leads us back to my topic. If they recognize the zone is currently lacking much in the way to lure in adventurers, they might be using the Living Story to lay the foundation for something that will eventually rectify that problem.

It would be kinda cool to see a town built around combat with the Norn and Charr. Course it would be nice if a zone added was worthwhile to go into for anything before months down the road have to pass. Where a bad story will be used to -maybe- do something with it.

At least some of the refugees seem well aware of what they’re getting themselves in for by moving to Southsun. Some of the norn are even looking forward to having some new big, dangerous game to hunt.

As someone else said I don’t think either the norn or the charr would really be content with a completely safe home.

Hmm…I wonder how long it will be before we see shrines to the Karka spirit…

To be fair to the Consortium, with the Ancient Karka dead, it’s possible that the karka don’t have the organisation to make concerted attacks any more, let alone anything else on the island. So you’d have dangerous creatures wandering outside the walls, but the settlements themselves are fairly safe. After all, the tourist spots aren’t being attacked…

By contrast, the Molten Alliance is being presented as a credible direct threat to Heolbrak and the Black Citadel, despite the latter being one of the most formidable fortifications in Tyria. So, realistically speaking, the refugees probably ARE safer in Southsun.

Of course, tactically speaking having them in one of the above cities to reinforce the defences is probably a better plan, but Hoelbrak at least already has a refugee population, so it’s possible that the reason they’re not doing that is because they’re already near capacity, and they want to ensure that the refugees that are staying are the ones that will be most useful in a fight.

Interesting take. We’re not privy to the actual logistical strain the refugees put on Hoelbrak and the Black Citadel. Perhaps feeding them just isn’t feasible. So what better solution than to plop them down somewhere with lots of edible fruit and plenty of fish to be hauled from the sea? This might be doubly true if citizens of the aforementioned cities pay taxes where refugees would pay none; but we’ve seen nothing outside the BLTP that indicates taxes are something that exists in the realm of Tyria.

Considering that all the refugees getting moved to Southsun Cove are having to sign a lengthy contract, I suspect that we are going to see…. issues… arise from this small town. As to why they would move somewhere dangerous, I dont think the Consortium is being entirely honest with them.

I would assume they do, although it may not always be presented as such. Norn might lack taxes, but asura and humans both have a reasonably conventional government sector, and that’s likely to mean taxes. Charr society is run as a military regardless of what the individual members of charr society are doing – it’s likely that whatever economic activity they partake in is regarded as being on behalf of the legions, and all of their profits go to supporting the legion in return for a salary according to their rank. Sylvari… are hard to say.

I like Southsun Cove verymuch too, those special and hard Karka are realy a challenge for people like me that likes to mob (maybe too much Ragnarök in my early days of MMO), but I do feel that SC lacks events and stuff like other maps, If they realy go for it, it would be great!

…They could easily wall of a section of the island that would be protected against the Karka.

Or maybe it would not!! Which would be great too =D

There are NPCs (Eir in the one instance with Braham, though it’s hard to catch, and both refugee coordinators at the camps) that are stating that both Hoelbrak and Black Citadel are at their capacity and are having food and shelter problems – but refugees keep coming in.

That’s why they began sending some off to Lion’s Arch. Where the Consortium then made their “we’ll let you stay in Southsun Cove!” offer.

Some of the responses got wondering what the Consortium’s end-game in all this is? Are they a benevolent group just trying to lend a hand to the downtrodden? Or do they have some ulterior motive behind their seemingly charitable actions? If the latter is the case, is it simply a case of them looking to profit from others’ misfortune? Or could they actually be up to something more sinister than profiteering?

I think the Consortium’s end-game is this:

Nothing more nothing less. They only want profit. That’s how they came out to be during The Lost Shores, and they seem to be keeping to that mentality now. They cut ties with individuals who cost them money, and they’ll risk doing illegal things if they can get away with it with minimal lose should things go awry. And just as they tried turning Fractals into an adventurer’s hotspot (guess they succeeded in that, huh?) when it was a failure for making a gate going to Southsun Cove, they’re trying to make a profit out of the refugee’s situation.

Dear ANet writers,
