Act 3 Event Timing
Is this another way of saying, “We didn’t plan in advance, so to cover this logistical error.” What I gather from this is that to prevent people from being spoiled, those living the in Asia and Oceania are being forced to log in at an absurd time of the day simply because you “don’t want players to be spoilt”?
This event has had its ups and downs, yet due to the quality of certain things (The Clocktower) I have been willing to overlook this. Yet this poorly executed finale has caused my view as a whole to take a turn to for the worst. The fact that ANet has then decided to pull the “Spoilt” card has made it quite obvious that ANet do not think ahead, or simply don’t care about their Oceanic player base. Making a bad decision on the time of the event is bad, but then trying to cover up their bad logic with more bad excuses is simply horrible.
Really? You can’t please everyone. ANET is a US company not Asian or European. Get over it.
Really? You can’t please everyone. ANET is a US company not Asian or European. Get over it.
Yet they sell their wares to Oceanic and European customers, so maybe get off your American-brand High Horse™ and not be a jerk.
we cant get over it since money is money and we paid the same amount so shuddap Reevac. once ur running a business you have to satisfy all of your customers else you’ll end like blizzard..
@ Reevac. If ANet came into the market only willing the please their American player base, then why did they sell to Europe, Asia and the Oceanic regions at all?
A wild ANET fanboy appeared, he used ‘shoot down anyone who criticizes ANET’, nothing happened.
This is really disappointing, why would you sell a game to Asia/Australia/Europe if you will then only host an event ONCE at the US prime time only? Which by the way is 3-6am in Australia.
However, this disappointing decision from ANET has highlighted one major problem in their server structure- the lack of Oceanic servers. If you were to host it at a single time throughout the entire game, you could have then changed the time for the Oceanic servers to THEIR primetime, rather then blatantly ignoring the rest of the world in the favor of US players.
The ‘spoiler’ excuse is pointless, people would only watch youtube videos if a) they don’t have the game or b) they can’t complete the event properly.
Maybe for you it has been dissapointing. But for me, I have enjoyed every single thing of it.
And everybody should not be able to get everything from this. There has to be difference in people ingame, that I belive is what makes a game awesome. Seeing a person having something you did not get in time and now it is to late. I would be sad if I missed the special event but I am in the lucky position to actually be able to attend it!
What about people buying the game after Halloween is over? Should they also be able to get the special event and items because they brough the game to late? It is basicaly the same thing as not being able to either earn items/titles or attend events ingame.
Just a few thoughs I had in my mind after reading this.
Really? You can’t please everyone. ANET is a US company not Asian or European. Get over it.
While I understand your position I cannot disagree more. I’ve paid for this game and I have spent probably $300 dollars in gems over my four 80s. To make the even at 3am on a MONDAY and then claim it wont be repeated due to spoilers is disappointing to say the least; especially alongside the chest nerfs.
Look at all the Korean European games. They have their games events and times set there timezone. Hmmm who’d of thought that a US company would do the same thing.
You guys really messed it up, first saying wednesday then sunday…some ppl work, or have stuff to do, and missing the event because you guys are incompetent compared to GW1? big mistake…GW1, simple and fun, everyone had a chance for everything, not you guys just mess everything up, stupid….event every 3 hours like in GW1 = FUN, I played GW1 for 7 years and there was always fun in every event…now…its dumb, think about it before u guys mess stuff up within 2 months…GG

The ridiculous part is that the players ‘being spoiled’ are the players that are going to miss out. Basically, instead of ‘if you missed the event, there’ll be another one in x hours, steer clear of youtube if you don’t want to be spoiled’, we’ve been given ‘missed the event? oh well, it’s on youtube, enjoy’. The reasoning they’ve given us for not having the event happen multiple times simply doesn’t stand up to reason.
The only way that I can see this as being an acceptable thing is if the event is a flashy show only and participants recieve no tangeable rewards/achievements that cannot otherwise be obtained laer on during the event.

There is a huge difference between people playing NOW and people playing in the future. Your sentiment is irrelevant. The issue is that the even is EARLY in the morning for oceanics (1-3am) on a MONDAY. I can be there during the evening/afternoon but not at 3am on a workday.
Maybe for you it has been dissapointing. But for me, I have enjoyed every single thing of it.

Considering it’s a “seasonal event” I don’t see why people who purchase and play the game post-event should even be factored in, that’s irrelevant. These are seasonal rares, they’ll appear again next year. Honestly, if someone doesn’t have that sort of patience, they shouldn’t be gaming.
Look at all the Korean European games. They have their games events and times set there timezone. Hmmm who’d of thought that a US company would do the same thing.
We are talking about Guild Wars 2 not other games. It’s predecessor had the events running every 3 hours. Put yourself in our shoes for a few minutes.
Sorry guys, I must have missed the big warning ‘You will miss out on events because we favour American players and you are not American’ when I bought the game.
Oh wait.. there wasn’t one.

I completely agree with you, however, with the way it was marketed, I think that Act 3 is a connective and the most important act in the Halloween event, Act 4 will probably be a resolution and wrap-up.
I think this could have been handled better by having everyone who has not witnessed the event simply be in the version of LA that exists just before the event. Then they enter an instance which is the event and when they exit the instance they are simply placed in the ‘current’ LA.
Which depending on how they treat portals and keep track of players may very well be easy.
EDIT: I’d like to add I don’t think its fair to claim ArenaNet somehow likes its North American players more then the players in other parts of the world. That is just unreasonable.
(edited by Waspinator.3906)
So, am I right to say that if I’m unable to play at this timing, I would miss this event forever??
Unless the same event is held the following season, then yes you would Kaelynn. And even then, if the event is held at the same time then you may miss it again. That is.. of course… if ANET survives a year, GW2 is beginning to remind me of SWTOR tbh.
The original Guild Wars got it right with events, sure the events weren’t built to such scale or magnitude, at least people had multiple opportunities to participate and reap the rewards/benefits. It was a tried and tested method which succeeded, why on earth has this approach been scrapped in favour of a release effectively shutting out Asia and Oceania?
You don’t receive anything from the event. Im guessing there will so many people it won’t even render proper to view it all.
They are just lazy, bah.
At least they should make a n instance version of the event so that even you miss it, you can talk to npc to look the event again.
You don’t receive anything from the event. Im guessing there will so many people it won’t even render proper to view it all.
Well I certainly hope that there will be no rewards gained from the event. That way people can catch up on Youtube.
I can’t attend this event either, and I live a stone’s throw from ANET. However, if there are no prizes, and this isn’t associated with titles or achievements then I don’t have a problem watching it on YouTube later.
If I will be missing titles or achievements associated then I’m going to be a little more upset because that’s-just-lame. I have a feeling that is not the case so I’m not going to get all worked up about it.
Can’t make it? bad luck.
I think this is an excelent idea…it finaly gives the immersion of a living world…whats the point in events when you can do them over and over again?….This is a good idea and the time is well chosen too….only if i could make it too :/
Maybe for you it has been dissapointing. But for me, I have enjoyed every single thing of it.

There’s a difference between “you have to be there to get it” and “you made the mistake of living in the timezone and actually having responsibilities to work/school/not disturbing sleeping family and/or housemates that prevent you from getting up at or before dawn on a Monday morning, so sad, too bad!” And that’s without considering people even in their prime locations that are doing weekend work, have family responsibilities, or otherwise can’t make the single, one-off time that they’ve been building up to. (And the last-minute date change means that people could have moved around their schedule to make time and are now, well, baby felined.)
I can think of a few justifications for having it only happen once, but the spoiler one they’re giving us just isn’t credible. After all, people who don’t want to get spoilered can, you know, just avoid the spoilers so they can enjoy it when they can get to it. In fact, for the people who can’t make the initial time, the same thing that stops them from being able to make the initial time is also likely to stop them from being able to go looking for spoilers if the event is repeated often enough.
It worked for Guild Wars 1, and being able to experience something yourself even with major spoilers is infinitely better than being locked out. I for one am majorly disappointed, ArenaNet.
People don’t hate Scarlet like Game of Thrones fans hate Joffrey.
They hate her the way Star Wars fans hate Jar Jar Binks.
Can’t make it? bad luck.

Its a holiday event with candy corn golems and plastic spiders. Reruning the event is more than just petty immersion in an MMO… its giving other timezones a fair go.

ANet hasn’t considered those who live in the covered timezones who have late work shifts during the event. So essentially this event will force people to wake up at absurd times or skip real life commitments.
Another ANET fanboy appeared, he used ‘grow neckbeard’, his neckbeard level is now over 9000.
The point is that they are favouring Americans over everyone else, now I’m starting to wonder if they’re intentionally killing GW2 so they can shut it down and just enjoy the money they made from us initially buying the game and gems.
Although its not something that will affect me since I’m free on that timing and will probably be present for that event but I still do agree with them that these one time event would only work if it actually did have separate servers for the different timezone but they don’t. Honestly, imagine for places with GMT+8 like Beijing, Singapore or Malaysia, it’s at an ungodly hour of 3 AM I believe.
Sure, it’s understandable that they’re attempting to please the majority while trying to keep to their game design philosophy and such but still, the minority of the players which I assume are predominantly the asian players that will basically be miffed by the odd event timing so they do have a valid complaint.
All I can say is good luck, hope they hear your complaint, if not for this event then, hopefully for the future events.
Hopefully missing this 1-time event will not ruin my “Emissary of the Mad King” title.
I, like so many others, have probably been farming for this title since the halloween event started.
My job will always prevail over gw2, cause it pays for stuff like gw2.
I think 21:00 GMT would be a better time if they do consider players from Australia and East Asia. It maybe a bit late for East Europe but should be acceptable because it is much easier for you stay late for 1-2 hours. For Australia and East Asia, 3am or 4am is far too early. 5am or 6am would be acceptable for the majority.

I think it’s pretty important that they clarify the importance of this event in terms of otherwise unobtainable rewards. Then, at least, people can make an informed descision as to whether or not it’s worth waking up at said ungodly hour.

This is how I feel. I’ve been getting more bummed out each day of the event.

No because we are on Monday already. It’s lucky if you don’t need to work.

I understand what you’re saying, and it does stink. I’d like to see it in person myself. BUT, if I’m missing out on a one time only reward because I have a life then I think there’s a massive problem with their scenario.
It sounds like this “One time” event will probably change something in the world which cannot be repeated. If that’s the case then it wouldn’t be associated with prizes or achievements. At that point you’ll have to watch it on YouTube. Does it fit with their logic for the “one time” that they don’t want people to watch it on YouTube? No, I think the employee who wrote that needs to come up with some sort of edit on that because that’s just silly. Spoiled? Lame. It’s already spoiled for me if I have to miss it right?
Like I said before though, if it’s not important to work I put toward a title, then I’ll settle for watching it on YouTube, especially if it’s a world changer.
We’ll see soon enough…or later depending one where you live or what you have going on tomorrow…..
Saturday 2pm PST / Saturday 9pm GMT / Sunday 7am AEST would of allowed everyone to enjoy the event.

A lot of big named MMO’s have had 1 time only events. Most of them don’t even announce when those events are going to happen, so Anet is ahead of the curve there.
The fact of the matter is no matter what time the event happens, SOMEONE will have other responsibilities that will make them miss it and making the event repeatable makes it no different than any other Dynamic Event or Traditional Quest. Having it as a 1 Time Only event gives it weight and makes it special. That feeling is what Anet is aiming for with this one particular Event for Phase 3.
At some point you have to understand that simply paying money by purchasing the game does not give you the power to demand that they change their design decisions. MMO Communities do this far too often as it is and while in some cases it’s justified (class imbalance or encounter difficulty) in cases such as this.. I really don’t see it.
I can think of a few justifications for having it only happen once, but the spoiler one they’re giving us just isn’t credible. I think, it’s less of a “you’re going to be spoiled” and more of a “we want the community to experience this with no guides or cheat sheets.” The Mad King books are a perfect example of the experience of the task being expedited due to the availability of Guides relatively quickly after the content is released. It’s to the point where when people ask in Map/Team for hints or help, the answer is almost always to “just look up a guide.” Obviously that can’t be avoided always and Anet knows that.. but I can’t say that it’s wrong for them to want a few things here and there to remain unknown to give a specific feel to the playerbase taking part in it.
It’s unfortunate for those people who can’t make it, that they won’t be able to experience the event, but such is the nature of some content. It’s really not all that different from some players being unable to acquire Legendaries and some people never being able to do the Clock Tower Puzzle. In every case, there’s people who are upset about it but these things were designed that way for a specific purpose by Anet. You may not like or agree with that but they’re perfectly within their rights as Content Authors to desire for that to be the case.
Saturday 2pm PST / Saturday 9pm GMT / Sunday 7am AEST would of allowed everyone to enjoy the event.
That would be amenable, although, making it one-time only is still something that will annoy people, given the nature of real life. ANet should have stuck to the system they used in GW.

The thing about people like you is that you simply do not understand what it feels like to be Asian/Australian/not American. You’re right, other MMO’s do this too, they deliberately set events to an American prime time only and simply do not care about Oceania. If you were in our position I highly doubt you would disagree.
Has Anet considered that Europe goes daylight savings at midnight? Have they adjusted for that?
(The US goes daylight savings next Sunday.)

I agree and it should have been designed around that to be honest.
The only reason I can think of for it not being repeated is that this event will have permanent effects/changes on the game itself, like something appearing somewhere on the map and staying there after Halloween is over.
Otherwise, there are no reasons for not having it repeating over the course of the day.
Has Anet considered that Europe goes daylight savings at midnight? Have they adjusted for that?

I do believe so, however, that still does not change the fact that it’ll still be inconvenient for players in Europe and America.
Who cares man, it’s one event in the game, one achievement, maybe one or two items you wont be able to get. This game is huge and it’s not designed so everyone can have every single thing in the game. THE WORLD OF TYRIA GOES ON, more things will come, more events, more items, more achievements. Don’t be mad at the developers for making one thing a one time only.
I miss the times when people just made really hard games and there were no guides anywhere and you either got things or you didn’t and that was it, there was no crying in forums. Appreciate the game for what it is, for the beautiful and fun game they have made (at least in a lot of our opinions). If it’s that bad then don’t play it, if you’ve spent 60 dollars on the game and still don’t like, too bad… I’m pretty sure i haven’t liked every investment I’ve made in my life.
Just please quit crying about every thing in the game, kitten

I don’t appreciate you intentionally misconstruing my statement to fit into your “poor me” mindset.
I’ve missed many events in many MMO’s regardless of my region due to work, sleep, or familial obligation. That’s life. Literally. I’ve also played with many Oceanic Players who rolled on North American servers (when there were Oceanic Servers to choose from) because they wanted to, and they made it to plenty of events without gripe. I’ve seen players from Asia in this very game playing alongside North Americans during hours that could still be considered Prime.
Maybe they’re exceptions to the general populace or maybe.. just maybe.. different people play at different times regardless of Region? Anet has already said that they settled on this date and time because it’s when GW2 as the most concurrent players throughout all Regions.
I happened to be lucky and have off work tomorrow. I generally work on Sundays as a server actually. But I wouldnt hate the game just because I can’t make it to one thing or because I miss out on one item. It’s silly this game is huge and there are many other things in it that I will come to and will get. Get over it.
