For example, Mad King cutscene was on my Monday morning 3am. They should have changed it because I had to work at 8am. Country election, change event time. Civil War is another location, extend again. Taiwan earthquake extend…

So yea, they should not do anything as this is an act of nature and is not under their control. And in doing so, they will need to start to do for all other reasons, which in the long run is very unhealthy.

I feel for those affected by Sandy, but this is a game and extending the time sets a precedence that most companies will try not to do.

This is nonsense. Between at least 10 and maybe as high as 25 percent of the entire GW2 player base will be affected by this storm. We’re not talking about a hurricane in a remote area, we’re talking about a MASSIVE storm (close to 1000 miles across) headed toward the most densely populated region in the US. This storm is no joke and a very large portion of ArenaNet’s customer base will be affected by it.

Now, to refute your post:
1. Missing out because of work is not the same because that is under your control.
2. Whether or not a natural disaster is reason enough to extend an event depends on how many customers will be affected. For people who don’t live in densely populated regions with lots of GW2 players, that means a disaster in your area is probably not applicable.
3. ArenaNet can choose what it wants to do, when it wants to do it. It doesn’t need to worry about precedent like a court does.

Its not our fault you live on the east coast why does the events ending need to change just to fit your needs? S**t happens worry about your self and your family, not about getting the golden pumpkin mini pet at the end of the event.

We’re on a game forum, so people are going to talk about how this hurricane affects their ability to play this game. I seriously doubt these same people were worrying about Guild Wars 2 when they were stocking up on supplies to ride out a long power outage.

People seem to have a very vague understanding of what a hurricane is, what is does and why the East Coast is effected more by these things then other areas of the world… let me outline some basics so we can all be on the same page:

1. Hurricanes are usually not deadly and there is little you can do. The only deaths that occur in hurricanes are from people who are not prepared. They didn’t evacuate when they were supposed to, they didn’t stay inside, or they stood under a falling tree. In the east coast we rarely have hurricanes with enough wind speed to rip houses apart and kill people that way.

2. damage: the destructive power comes because the storm is very very large (1000 miles (1600km) across in this case) and slow moving. The storm stays in a particular area for days at a time, dropping absurd amounts of rain with high sustained winds. the large quantities of rain greatly loosen the soil causing trees to blow over in the high winds. Due to the significantly higher density of people and buildings on the east coast as compared to other areas of the world this means every time a tree falls it is almost certain to break something (usually power lines). Since the storm is over such a large area, a massive number of trees fall causing major damage over a very large area. There just aren’t enough power plant workers to fix all those damaged lines. The second form of damage is in the form of flooding. Since rain can exceed 10" of rain in a 24 hour period flash flooding is a major source of damage in hurricanes. Again it is usually not deadly because the floods only reach 5-10 ft deep and people just go to the second floor of their house to await rescue, but everything over huge areas gets flooded 5-10 ft deep causing billions upon billions of dollars in property damage due to the large area.

3. Snow potential: in rural areas if a large storm drops 24" of snow it really isn’t a big deal. Plows come out, shovels come out and you just push the snow away. in places like NYC you get major headlines for anything above 6" of snow. For Rural areas this seems really dumb, but that is because you have somewhere to put your snow. In NYC the layout goes House-Sidewalk-Car-Street-Car-Sidewalk-House. millions of people use the street and the sidewalk every day, they both need to be cleared. However in a rural area where the plow just shoves the snow into the lawn or ditch nearby, in the city there is no lawn or ditch, doing that would literally trap people in their homes. Below 6" of snow you rely on continual salting of the roads to melt the problem away. Above that though it doesn’t melt fast enough and there is nothing to be done with the snow. They put it into dump trucks, bring it to the harbor and start dumping it into the ocean… this takes about a week before you can clear all the streets. So no the city people aren’t being sissies, it is an entirely different problem that people in rural areas don’t have to deal with.

In summary, it is not crazy for people to worry about a video game when they are going to get hit with a hurricane because there is nothing those people can do that they haven’t already done over the last few days. At this point they are just sitting and waiting for the power to go out which is inevitably will.

If the big kitten California earthquake were to hit in the final days of the event I would not expect them to extend the event. The point is that just because the east coast is densely populated does not necessarily mean that most of the gw2 playerbase resides there, this is a worldwide game and wouldn’t hold my breath for preferential treatment. It’s a Category 1. It’s a BIG Category 1, so there’s going to be some intense flooding and a lot of mess, but speaking as a former resident of Florida, I can see how someone would get a little jaded about anything less than a mid-to-strong 3. Still, this storm’s just plain big enough that I’d be wary of predicting damages based on other Category 1s and 2s I’ve lived through.

Anyway, best luck to everyone getting hit by it. Be cautious, and when it blows over, try to be cool to other people who didn’t prepare as well. I don’t regret moving… and probably won’t, until the Yellowstone Caldera blows up underneath me and takes out Wyoming, Colorado, Idaho and Utah…

I’ve been through Category 3s and 4s when I lived in Florida. To be honest, tornadoes are scarier. A well constructed building will handle a Category 3 or 4. Tornadoes, not so much. And this storm is just a Category 1. The only wind damage I’m concerned about is a branch falling on one of my cars, but I parked in a pretty good spot, so I should be okay.

The biggest concern for most people is power outages. They’re not life threatening, just incredibly frustrating.

Just remember you only have one life, there is always next year for a video game event, and more than likely Anet will not extend the event, mainly because I think they are following a schedule, each event is set for such and when they push it back everything gets pushed back, I think they will adopt the same mentality, “there is always next year”.

What a horrible argument. I’m not working this out by population, I’m working it out by account sales. ArenaNet wouldn’t extend an event for a disaster in China because it has no customers in China (other than botters). This is all about ArenaNet catering to its customers, not altruism.

It’s one thing when it affects a small demographic of people in which a small margin of players may be impacted. It’s something else when it affects a measurable fraction of a coastal playerbase…

Hey, next time a massive catastrophe hits a country with a population of 10 million people (at max) in Europe, I’ll ask an international company to please re-schedule / extend / repeat something because those people can’t make it en-masse due to no fault of their own. Go and prepare for your hurricane.

I’m in Seattle and will in no way be impacted by Hurricane Sandy. But I have guildmates who have already been impacted (i.e. they were visiting the area and their flights were cancelled) and have several more who will soon be impacted because they live in the area. It’s my hope that ArenaNet will (or are) considering extending the Halloween event or doing an event Redux (as they have in the past with GW1) so those impacted will have a chance to score their achievements.

My thoughts are with those who are impacted…stay safe!

If there are more Halloween rares, that would reduce prices, not increase them.

Ignore the bit about the trading post then, but still the farming of the dungeon is accurate enough. :P

TBH, if they don’t extend it there’s always the next event (and crafting in the MF apparently if you want the skins?). If they do extend it, everyone who isn’t affected still gets more time than the people who are, so even if the value of the items goes down, these people have a greater opportunity for profit.

In short: it doesn’t matter either way.

I would just like the extension as I am directly in the path and it is predicted that the area I am in will lose power for a week. I am one achievement from Emissary of the Mad King, and I would be very disappointed if all my hard work had been for nothing, especially if they change up the events next year. So ANet, please do consider an extension, many people will be extremely grateful.

I think a lot of the people in this thread are missing the point, maybe because they’ve never lived in hurricane affected areas so they don’t understand how this works.

They aren’t being outrageous for worrying about not getting to see the event. It’s because they don’t live in the “destruction” zone to speak, just the “our power is going to be out for what could possibly be a long time” zone. This make sense? They’re not worrying about losing their homes or families because that’s probably not going to happen. Just going to have really, really horrible weather that causes electrical problems.

I am sympathetic towards those who are going to be losing their power during the event. I’m from the area, so I’m fortunate to be going to college elsewhere. I do think most people will get their power back by the time the event ends (November 5th) to complete Act 4.

I really enjoyed the Halloween events this year, and I’m glad I was able to experience them. However, I am ready to move back into the normal game play with Halloween “LFG MK”, pumpkins clouding my mini map, candy corn veins everywhere, etc., all gone. Most people may not agree, but it’s one of those “It was fun, but I’m ready to move on!”.

However, I do think ANet should be considerate of those east coasters who only need the “Tea Party” event to get their title. I could deal with not being able to complete the tower, carve all my pumpkins, or any other little extras the fourth act may have. But as many have said, they only have one that one more achievement for the title, and that would frustrate me as well.

Whatever the fourth act is, maybe the tea party will be an instance that even when all decorations, etc. are removed after November 5th, can still be available for maybe… another five or so days? That way, it doesn’t feel like Halloween anymore so us players can move on, but those who need that last event can still get their title.

The power outages have already begun for me. I’ve lost power 3 times today, and internet for 20 minutes. Next time may be permanent. No telling when it will come back again, when it happens next. Could be weeks. I guess I won’t be completing the Halloween achievement this year. May even die, for all that’s being said about Frankenstorm.

I’m more worried about the achievement/title than the other stuff. I can’t watch “the party” on youtube later to get the last achievement for the title.

The one time event is most likely another cutscene, which you CAN watch later. If you’re missing the OTHER achievements, it’s your own fault, you’ve had close to a week to work on most of them, and they don’t take very long. the skins you probably won’t get as a drop anyway, so an extension wouldn’t help there. However, a large number of people (I’m not talking percentage, I’m just talking raw numbers) missing the entirety of act 4 because of mass week+ long power outages and not getting a title they’ve earned as much of as arenanet will allow would warrant an extension in my book.

Even if they only extended act 4 and shut the first 3 acts down on schedule, I’d be happy. Hell, I’d be happy with just having an NPC who sits around lion’s arch for a week who tells you about the party and gives you the achievement for it so people who were without power for a week (or more) could get their titles.

For the people essentially telling others to “shut up and prepare for your hurricane”: If they’re not already prepared, they’re pretty much screwed. You SHOULD be at the “sit someplace safe and wait for your power and/or internet to go out” stage of “preparing”.

There’s really no reason for them NOT to offer a way for the people who lose power to get the last achievement, aside from forum dwellers enjoying other people’s pain.

@Terra Dactyl: I had just posted a similar idea, and I agree. When the event ends, I want all of the Halloween theme gone. I’m ready to go back to normalcy… And I think players have had plenty of time to get the first three acts up until this point. I would certainly be okay as well for the instance, or as you said, an NPC still being available for a few extra days. My gripe is that the Halloween theme, candy corn, pumpkins etc. will still be in the game. If these were all gone, and just the Tea Party event available for those trying to get the title, I don’t see a problem. I hope ANet makes this available for the east coasters.

Those championing for them not to extend or acting like the shouldn’t extend the event sound like you think it would be unfair or stupid… I don’t get that at all? It’s as if somehow because its not happening to you directly ( this is obviously not meant for those who are in the hot zone ) they shouldn’t extend it.

Nothing wrong with asking and really the only people who should be responding to this are arenanet because in all honesty it doesn’t have a thing to do with the rest of us who are not being affected by the situation. Just saying.

And those saying they are tired of looking at the Halloween Decorations… REALLY!? Im pretty sure those on the East coast will be tired of hearing sirens, having no electricity or heat in some cases… I think the least we could do as a community of gamers is put up with the decorations a week longer. lol. smh..

Well there’s hundreds of thousands of people without power already. I have power for now but we’ll see in the morning… The utilities have hopefully ramped up to deal with this nightmare.

I just find many peoples tone here a bit alarming. I heard the general statement “It doesn’t effect the rest of us (or majority of us) so the victims of the natural disaster shouldn’t get any special treatment.”

Now, A-net has already said that they plan to not extend it and that is fine. But the wording used in the statements lead me to believe that is how some of these people think about everything. There was even a person(s) who cheered on the storm. The worst part about all of this is that if something was to happen to one of these people they would probably cry and scream about why everyone is not completely focused on them.

This thread was just simply asking a question of whether or not there was any plans on extending it.. not a demanding thread. Yet, the people I have described came in here with that type of poison. Ridiculous.

I personally am not affected by the storm – But the fact that they do care about their playerbase is reassuring. No they couldn’t accommodate to the playerbase affected, but they still took the time to let us know one way or another.

I personally feel that there should be at least an NPC to let us affected do something since this truly was an “act of nature/God” preventing many from joining in on the finally/getting an achievement. I’m not a coder but it doesn’t seem like it’d be hard to just add a different access point to an already created even. And it’s just good customer service

If you’re so dead set on keeping the schedule, could you at least make the emissary of the mad king achievement be for 4 instead of 5 achievements. I did as many as the game would allow at this point, but now my power is out. And may be for days.

Also, I’m starting to get annoyed at all the " there are more important things to worry about" line people keep ignorantly spouting. Maybe we’ve taken care of everything we can. Have your ever heard of “riding out the storm”? There is nothing we can do personally to make the power goes back on. We have food and water and our loved ones are safe. We are just asking for a tiny bit of virtual compassion while we wait for our lives to return to normal. Which in some cases may be weeks.

Great so if I do loose power I miss out on something I will never, ever have the chance to obtain again, be it an item in addition to the party achieve for the title that others will surely be showing off. I’ve been lucky so far and it wont be bad here save for potential power loss, of course we have taken precautions. Is there no way that these one time things that are act 4 specific could be obtained for those who have no chance to obtain them at all? I think thats the bottom line that people, especially those in it for collecting and achieves, would want.

ArenaNet set this precedent many years ago… They’ve extended an event in the past, when there was a natural disaster in Asia. They’ve even repeated events a couple of times (although, those were because of technical failures, IIRC).

There aren’t that many natural disasters in a year that it’s unreasonable to wonder if they might find a way to accommodate folks. Unfortunately, it just wasn’t possible with this event, as they’ve stated. It’s too bad they just couldn’t manage it, but I think most people understand.

Worldwide, there are about 400 natural disasters each year, affecting 230 million people. That’s more than 1 per day. Most just don’t make it on the news.

This is however a different game and companies are allowed to change their policies.

I agree. I saw the crazy storm on the news during dinner. An online game would be the least of my worries if I was on the east coast and we’re not even trolling. Even if I wasn’t in the direct impacted area, I would be worrying about my friends and family.

Some of you guys just dont get it. Yea here people sit in the hurricane worried about a game, not their homes, families, property, and lives, just a game. Of course people worry about all these things including guild wars. Put yourself in the same position, honestly, would you enjoy missing out on an event, never again to be able to obtain this title and possible item? Forever to know that no matter what you do you can not obtain it again? Yea some people have it bad, some people have it so so and others are fine, but why can people not also be annoyed or bothered that they will not get something in a game they clearly enjoy a lot. No one is claiming the game is more important then other things but are asking, that since such a large amount of people and likely player base, will be effected that perhaps something can be done to provide them equal chance to have these things.

This morning I saw some dude that got hit by the hurricane freaking out about having no power to look at his facebook… Like wtf? Worry about safety/food/shelter first, guild wars 2 wont be swept away by a hurricane xD

I imagine the people posting could be one of many who’re just going to lose power. Chances are they’re aware of how the storm would affect them because they’ve had storms before. So if you live by the river kitten you know you’re going to flood. That is all you can do. Prepare.

Though in reality most who live in coastal areas need something other then the hurricane to focus on during the oncoming storm. In truth, hearing about it every 10seconds gets a slight bit more then annoying, and all you want to know is:

Will it hit you
Is work/school closed
How bad it’s said to be
Do you have to evacuate

Landfall predictions suck, most city’s wont evacuate the entire city, some jobs dont close. (Believe me I was working at the ocean front when it passed by VA Beach VA.)

If you’re staying, you already normally have stocked up on food/water/battery’s/snacks. All that’s left is to sit inside waiting to see how bad it gets and if power will die.

So why not worry about something in game, while you are able to log in?…

Non-US players were missing out on a cutscene.

US players are going to be losing houses, having people in their family die, and their cities wrecked. Estimated 100 billion in damage from some people they were speculating on the news tonight.

There is a difference between a hurricane destroying your homeland versus having an off-houred event that could be watched on youtube. Seriously.

Overreacting? Right. The news reporter talking about someone he knew driving in a pick-up that was seconds away from being swept straight into a Bay was an over reaction to a little rain. New York’s transformers exploding leaving, last estimate was 1.2 million people out of power. Their subways are flooded with last count 3 feet of water. People die in storms all the time.

Yes. At worst wind/water damage. You’re right. Everything else that happens isn’t because of the storm, it is because of just pure concidental bad luck. On top of that, my post did not say whether I agreed or disagreed. It was simply showing the difference between the scenarios.
