In my view: Costume Brawl = pay to win
Anecdotal evidence. I’ve got a win streak of over 30 with some random costume from the cauldron.
I just noticed that collecting minis is pay to win guys.
Not sure if serious. Winning an event mini-game is serious stuffz guyz.
I’ve been on massive win streaks as well doing it with the free costumes. Pay-to-win also is for actual content that matters, just saying. Costume Brawl grants you an achievement yes, but it’s more of a treat for people who are in towns (or even in the world) waiting around. Just pop a costume on and start brawling.
edit: changed title to achievement

I find the whole costume brawl thing to be something to pass time. All my wins so far have been my guild members and I trading blows or being chaotic for fun while waiting on things. The Mad King outfit is certainly better at it, but it is in no way required, like some other actual pay to win games out there.

While costume brawl is indeed a lot easier with the Halloween costumes, I’ve noticed the skeleton and mummy form are easily just as good. And you can get those by jumping in the cauldron. But costume brawl is simply a casual affair, and it only earns you points towards a simple achievement. So even without one of the costumes, you can easily earn enough points within a day and get the achievement. I’m glad that it is now this casual, and accessible.
It is however a pity that players must pay cash to dress up this Halloween. I wish more players could share the fun of flying on a broomstick with a really creepy smile.

Costume brawl does not give you a title it is in the community section of achievements so it doesn’t effect the Emissary of the Mad King title and it doesn’t have a crown beside the achievement so no title. It would be a good idea to get your facts right before posting instead of speading rumors.

Either you’re lying real hard… or you don’t know how a win streak looks like because the win streak is capped at 25, after which you do not get anymore streak for you kills. it does however still add to you achievement progress.

Sorry… grants you an achievement*… No need to be so brash. Everything else I stated was true, and made one mistake when I glanced at the achievement while writing this…
OH and I never said it counted toward the Mad King title (which it wouldn’t because costume brawl isn’t Halloween exclusive).

He’s referring to Win streaks, not the number of hits.
Win streaks are bundled. I had 8 win streaks (translates to 8*25 "hits) before I was knocked down by a friend. I could see that number where you see your boons.
30 is very impressive, indeed.

Nothing against you but i’ve seen people posting you get a title or costume from completeing the achievement all over the halloween forums
It stops counting win streaks at 25, but as others said it still keeps counting.

this doesn’t change the argument that much.
In real P2W games it’s no guarantee you’ll win either, but you do get a bonus on your chances of winning.
I think it’s pretty simple:
1. yes the costume brawl is pay to win, in the sense that spending more real money increases your chances drastically (but not in a 100% sure way, which p2w almost never does)
2. no it’s not the core gameplay that’s involved. not dungeons, not pvp, not even leveling.
It’s just a minor mini game, so it matters less if it’s p2w or not.
Not fair, but not gamebreaking either.
Its a stupid mini game, seriously people this is not even close to being on the list of problems

What makes sPvP or WvW so different?

What makes sPvP or WvW so different?
The fact they are competitive?
WvW you get experience, loot, titles, achievements and realm bonuses.
sPvP you get titles, achievements and armor.
Costume Brawl is casual PvP if that, it is literally just a mess around. If you want to make it competitive you can whisper friends/guildies and set up your own tournaments with your own set of rules (E.g. No one is allowed to use _ costume etc)
lol its actually fun, you CAN win with the random costumes.. It takes some dodging and moving about, just like you were in combat for real… XP Also u can use ur slot skills for extra mobility :P
Win at what?An achivement?
I see one major issue with your argument – P2W usually means you need to use real cash to get an advantage within the game. Completely aside from the other arguments posted here (about being successful with non-gem costumes, the fact that the mini game has no real impact on your success of the overall game of GW2, etc.) – there is another argument:
You don’t HAVE to get gems via cash. Gems can just as easily be purchased via in game earned coin (copper, silver, gold) which is many, if not most, of the times impossible in true P2W games.
If you argue that it’s just too expensive with the exchange rate – the rate has fluctuated from launch day, even during the event it has gone from 40s to 80s when I’ve checked the TP. If you bought it really early to hold onto you may have even payed between ~20 and 30s / 100 gems.
So, IMHO, it truly isn’t P2W as it doesn’t require real money to get an advantage; you can use silver/gold to get the gems to get that same advantage (which has been pointed out isn’t even an advantage if you know how to really use the skills you have in temporary acquired costumes).
If it really matters that much to you spend 8g or whatever it is now and buy one yourself.
Regardless if it is pay-to-win or not, there clearly are some balance issues with the power of some of the costumes. Why would anyone object to balancing this and making the Brawl more fun for everyone?

skeleton costume you get from jumping into the mystic forge cauldron is just as good, completed the achievement with it ^^
I would be in support of the awful tiny spider getting buffed.
I still got a crown with it though so whatever.
The little spider is just hard mode. As others have mentioned, both the mummy and skeleton can hold their own just fine.
Before anyone gets any big ideas, I don’t have any of the cash shop costumes, nor do I care about “winning” the costume brawl, so take whatever I say with that grain of salt.
The last MMO I played was really “Pay to Win”, this doesn’t even compare. In that game a character that cost $50,000 could go afk and kill non-cash players with reflect buffs only (if they were dumb enough to attack, that is). Mightiest tree in the forest and herring would often spring to mind….
So you feel that someone who pays to support the game gets a slight advantage in a part of the game that doesn’t matter?
NO WAY.
