This is a game. If I’m out of money at a Casino I’m done playing. If I get tired of constantly losing at lottery garbage in this game, I’ll go play an MMO and participate in a holiday event that offers better rewards at less chance.

From what i’m hearing from people opening them (I haven’t opened mine) is that they are having about the same luck as they did with Black Lion Chests, Mostly getting junk, rather then anything else.

“You need 1 Candy Corn, 6 Mystery Tonics, 1 Boost (any), 1 Boost (any) to get a Mad King Chest.”

Please allow us to use ANY 6 tonics for this recipe, or a way to convert specific tonics back to mystery tonics. I would prefer a way to just convert specific tonics back to Mystery Tonics because I have many specific stacks of just 3 tonics.

I still have almost an entire bank tab full of specific tonics from before Black Lion Chests just dropped Mystery Tonics and I’ve been waiting a long time to finally find a use for all of them.

Hmmm, I managed to use the Strength ones just fine and people seem to report that the Killstreak may work too.

Maybe log out and back in, or split the stack into single tonics and see if that works

Will this recipe work AFTER the event? If I still have candy Corn saved and 2 months after the event I get some Keys, can I get more Mad King chests as long as I have the haloween candy?

This problem is completely separate from the halloween event.

It’s the principle of implementing real money gambling on a limited duration item.

actually Glory Boosters don’t drop from BLCs. You’re right about the killstreak ones though, they’re bugged.

I did not realize getting a skin was such a HUGE gamble… like less than .01% gamble. It tells me a lot about this game though (I am new with this whole item shop/gamble concept). With that said, I “played/gambled” and didn’t get what I wanted, period. So I will no longer be contributing my money to this game. I’m not mad, angry, or even complaining… But I am not happy with my purchase, so naturally… I will not be purchasing again from this company just like any other company that I feel I have wasted good money on. What about the other blue tonics i.e. owl, eagle, moa, plant wolf, ice elemental and so on.
I have 12-20 of these other tonics and only 5 mystery tonics. I bought 50+ keys at release and If I have to buy more just to get mystery tonics I won’t. I am not in a situation now to buy keys or any gems not that I want to because yeah the stuff is cool but not worth my money, If Anet wanted to do us a favor they would add holiday merchants that sold these items for karma (I have 700k karma and nothing to spend it on).

Just thought I’d add that crafted mystery tonics do not work. I kinda guessed they wouldn’t but made some just to test.

I’m just happy I got to open a chest.

I have never seen a key drop in game since I started and have only found about 6 from completing maps or storyline quests.

That’s kind of interesting, considering you get Recipe: Gift of the Moon from a Mystic Forge recipe.

Why does everyone expect to get a RARE dropping item, its like everyone expecting to win the lottery. Guess what if everyone gets it, the item is no longer Rare by definition.

Everyone now has a chance to get them without buying keys (adds more actual $ fairness to the player base and the ‘newer’ players that have not amassed enough gold to buy the gems), and gets ‘please play again’ opportunity to those opening regular chests (and also adds some value to mystery tonics and boosts), any more access devalues and changes the RARE state of said items. And also, you know what happens when EVERYONE wins the lottery, everyone gets a bit annoyed that their hard to get grand prize is now everywhere it no longer is winning the lottery, take that Spanish lotto a while back where the city held a lotto and due to a glitch everyone won, and thereby won 1 Euro… but hey you won the lotto so you wouldn’t feel cheesed now would you…

Anet wants you to see someone with (eg) the Great Sword Saw and be in awe that they’ve got one, in sort of a slightly more common Legendary. And as far as the “I didn’t get anything” arguments, you get the horns, Act 1 you can get the book, you get food, recipes, theme’d mats, FOR FREE or with little to no work… and odds are you got some holiday items in that mix of stuff you did get, just not that one Rare (there’s that word again) item that you were hoping for… next time you buy a lottery ticket and don’t win (guess what you have a 99.99% chance of that happening!) go storm the lotto office and see if they give you ANY concession other than having security throw you out the door.

If there are Rare items, I want them to be Rare. They rightly should be either very low drop rates or stupidly hard to craft (if at all)… Why? so I can say I’ve got something a bit truely exotic, that won’t be seen every day. Free to play games pull this garbage on thier customers and anyone who has played those games know how long they are in business.

It works for those games because they are cheaply produced and when the customer base is kitten off they just release another cheap F2P game and it starts anew.

That wont work with GW2. It isnt a cheaply made game and the devs have no desire to see their customer base leave so abruptly.

They really need to do away with rewards in these gambling chests and sell the stuff outright in the shop. Sure they make bank in the short term this way, but the profits wont last and neither will the people willing to spend real money, not in-game gold.

We werent advertised rare. we were told one in six chance of skin + random shoulders added. one in six does not = 1 in 50, 1 in 100

In that case, if you guys think the drop rates are so bad…i would just not buy keys with gems. I personally dont buy keys because it is a gamble. There are stuff in the store definately worth spending money on….like the mad king thorn costume….which is pretty cool.

Did you know that the “other game” with a sub fee has 1% chance drop halloween items too?

I dont recall you being forced to spend real money either. Last I checked, most of this stuff is on the TP.

Having unique rewards from holiday events be completely dependent on winning the RNG is horrible game design.

Rift did all their events perfectly, as long as you participated in the event you could pick up most or all of the unique rewards from the event.

Just by doing holiday events you would collect tokens that you could turn in for most of the event rewards. And there were special tokens that you could only get once per day, and if you got enough of them you could get the best unique rewards, usually a mount.

No RNG lottery involved.

The biggest difference? Nobody complained about the event rewards in rift. If you look at the rift forums for threads about the events there are sometimes complaints that some of the puzzles or quests are too vague and that’s it. You don’t see anyone complain that a skin is too hard to get when you need to get 5000 event tokens from it and special events only give you 10-15 tokens each, because it still means if you really want something you can earn it. And guess what? These skins were still extremely rare because they were really hard to earn. The key is that nobody trying to earn them got slapped in the face by RNG.

Exactly ~ all this anger towards Anet is totally justified. Its not like most of us are asking for legendary drops here – we want some recognition of our support, instead we’re slapped in the face – the question is, how many people are at the point of ragequitting? I think I’m honestly, going to take a break for a week – at the point, I don’t even care about the rest of the acts and whatever ‘grand event’ they have planned for the weekend.

I am betting it is a less than 1% drop rate for a Halloween event item available for a very limited time based on how many chests people are opening and getting a bag full of crap. I am glad anet expects us to spend hours farming gold, to buy gems, to buy keys, and then open chests and get nothing. Good game.

I would rather they had bumped up the drop rate than give a second chance with the same terrible rate.

I assume the mystery tonic for animals would work, while the ones for furniture and plants would not, but I didn’t bother testing that myself.

The solution to “Pay to Win” has always been to make the strategy of dumping a bank onto the cash shop unprofitable. Guild Wars 2 could modify the gem system to be more like its antecedents, but none of you would like that because it goes further in the direction of necessitating actual money purchases for items that are guaranteed to have no effect on gameplay at large. That’s the safest way to do it: make it so you have to play the game to get a decent locked base, and unlock it with real currency (no gold to gem conversion) for items guaranteed not to have an effect on gameplay.

If you don’t want to do that and want to encourage people to find ways to shortcut using lucrative playstyles or supplement the market with items that have more than a cosmetic value, then you must limit the distribution of these items to avoid invalidating the economy and making this a game where you must either earn lots of money all the time or buy gems to access any amount of content. That fosters a generation of gold farmers and loose checkbooks with no room for casuals who want to play the game at leisure and spend a set amount of money when they really feel like it.

If you are surprised by the low drop rates and the whole unlockable chest system, then this is probably your first exposure to the microtransaction revolution in general, since there have been lots of games that have perfected this system in the past that stand by these methods that people are complaining about. There is a reason that these limits exist, and it has everything to do with the player population and the integration of the real and virtual economyof the game.

so far i opened 44 blc, never gonna open one anymore, and no skin, no one!!
so i created 22 mkc and oh my god two skin! (i destroyed the mystery but fortunately one of my pg have artificier, and yes the mistery tonic from artificier work, thx god, so all people that have a pg with artificier at least they are safe from the error from garbaging the tonic) so basically the drop rate at least for my experience is very higher, and in my map people and check that i’m an europe server so very few people are gaming now, they are spamming in the map chat at la the new skin they find it, so people if you tried and have bad luck i’m really sorry for you, but the chance now are fair for a lottery, try to remember that is LOTTERY that’s why i spend gold for certainty coz i know that i suck at lottery.
