I need opinions and thoughts on Human Last Names. I see a lot of people with “___heart” as a last name and i was thinking along those lines. I am picking a name for my Human Ranger. Right now his name is Demon Archer Kronos but I don’t like it to much. So I was thinking on using Kronos or Riku for the name but stuck on a last name. Lore friendly and as close to a “real” name is what i’m looking for.

hehe forgive me when I read Adorabelle Dearheart into your example :P

I tend to pick names that appeal to the idea/ concept I have of the character when I make them.
If that ends up being lore friendly- great.

My engi has two first names: Isabella Katerina
and my mesmer’s name- describes her personality and her profession: Diamond Mask

Consider what cultural origin your character has, be it Canthan or Elonian or Ascalonian or local Krytan. Look for an analogous human culture and pick something from that general pool. Here’s a site to help:

And one to give you an idea of which cultures apply:

Your adoptive Sylvari father?

You are aware that all Sylvari are, at max, 25 years old right now in the time line?

The first Sylvari were born in the year 1302, in game time is currently the year 1327.

They do, but they aren’t very experienced or well-versed in the ways of the world. They only posses an amalgamation of thoughts and memories from other sylvari before them.

Imagine creating a Sylvari player character. Coming out of the dream sequence of the tutorial, and immediately adopting a kid.

Doesn’t seem too plausible.

Look at the current first-born Sylvari in the game. Trahearne, Caithe, etc. Their level of maturity and experience seem to be at the point where they would just be having children now. Or maybe have children that are at most maybe 10 years old. Not raising one over the past 25 years.

Well, my humans belong to a clan for sorts. It was started back when the few hero’s put to rest the Great Destroyer and the Dwarves became stone crazy. A Guild was started by, a human, Jenstone of Lars, the Stone Polishers. Over time, this guild faded into obscurity, but Jenstone of Lars kept a clan of sorts going. In the mind of Jenstone, his friends became his family and he treated them as such. So his family, ie clan, began to include all races within Tyria. Norn, Asura, Sylvari, Human, Charr, they were all included. Over the years, part of the many changes was the last name. Not everyone was from Lars, much less had heard of it. And most likely it will never be found, long ago destroyed in one of the ancient battles between good and evil. So, to honor the founder of the original guild, the name Stones was accepted to be the clan designator or last name. At this point, the only beings that have wanted to wander the world are of the female sex, which is a story for another time.

I use my first name and the last name of a friend of mine. Loved it.

Also, other video game characters can be a source of inspiration.

I use “Cole” (inFam.) “Shepherd” (Silent Hill) “Ellis” (L4D2) as last names to list a few.

Sorry for the typos….

My characters with full names so far are;

Arista Skyfall – Guardian
Faith Blackwater – Mesmer
Isabel Blackrain – Necromancer
Arya Erivan – Warrior
Alyss Cenzar – Elementalist

I also happen to have Natsu D and Lisanna S, I have bad both since the headstart and have been reluctant to change them, it was a shame that I lagged out, or it would have been Natsu Dragneel and Lisanna Strauss, that 30 seconds was killer :’(

I don’t RP or follow any lore, I just name them with whatever I think sounds nice to me, mostly though, I take bits and pieces from books that I had enjoyed reading and piece together names from character/place/etc names that I found memorable.

I do believe they have name changes available, that wouldn’t require you to remake the character.

My character names? I try to have something fitting for an actual character. Titles I might use, IE my GW1 dervish had a surname which was more of a title then his actual last name. While they may seem weird (Infact, two surnames I came up with purely on my own…), but one is Istani in heritage, the other Kurzick.

I personally like the “given title” aspect of naming for humans since it’s a pretty relevant naming scheme for the time frame human’s are based off of, i.e. Alexander the Great, Robin of Locksley, Richard the Lionhearted, and makes it less boring then Firstname McLastname.

I went though with a traditionally viking sounding though name for my main (a Male Norn ele), but when I wanted to make a “fun” character I made a female human necro.

She has the tiniest options for size and height i could, clad in the girliest colors i had and named her “Nui Of The Fiber”… free cookies for anyone who gets the reference btw!

Believe it or not, contemporary last names are used all over. Open a family tree and you’re sure to find something that works really well. There’s no shortage of “normal human” names “Smith” “Thackery” “Meade” “Delequa” are a few notables.

Most players try to make themselves sound more important (and for some reason asian) as far as I can tell, so if you want to go for 99% of the roleplaying community try something like:

“Miso Lightsoup” or “Kayomi Nightravager”

Just make sure your first name sounds vaguely japanese that you heard in your favorite anime show (despite having an obviously non-canthan character) and your last name is a combination of two words.

Or give yourself a title! That way you sound really important despite having achieved nothing important!

Remember, it’s important to have an abnormal name, that way everyone knows how heroic you are!

My name is Mac Twinsong. I’m only halfway there, sadly. Stupid tyrian heritage.

One thing you could do is find a place in Tyria that you want your character to call home, or be from originally, etc. and incorporate that into their name.

Examples:
Vianne of Shaemoor
Bob of Beetletun

Nearly all my women are of Ishida and are Canthan descent of course. One has the last name Izushi. In gw2 they are of a Canthan clan that existed in Kryta since the War in Kryta in Gw 1. Its a long backstory though.

Out if Gw 2 they are of a heroic bloodline in a story I’m writing.

My Necro is called Fionnlagh MacAuslen, which means “The Fair Hero, Son of Peace”, not a canon name but its my name in the old tongue and I like that. I suppose it all depends on if you care about having a canon name or not, I dont really so all of my characters have different variations of my name. The good thing about Gaelic is that there is just so many variations of every name in the language.

If you can’t think of a nice last name you can also just not use a last name. None of my characters have last names as I think it’s silly.

All my toons have the same last name: Stones
Its short for JenStones, from Jen of Stones, from Jen Son of Stones, from Lars Stones.
Originally, Lars Stones was a gem collector, back in the days before the dwarves turned to stone. He had his own guild, The Stone Polishers. He was consumed by the quest for collecting diamonds, rubies and the like. Alas, some like to think his death happened on a bed in a grand house, but that was not to be. He was for ever lost to a diamond mine in Vabbi. Reportedly, his last words were, “hmmm that’s shinny”
