Thief: valkyrie, ruby orbs
25/30/0/15/0
III, X, I, III, XI, III
Withdraw or SoM, Shadow Refuge, assassin’s signet, signet of shadows, thieves guild
used short bow 100% of the time, if you use orrian meat and truffle stew you can dodge nearly 100% of the time. Use shadow refuge right before grabbing 3rd orb. In phase 2 just kite her. If I had to do it again though I’d suggest taking 5 out of deadly arts and putting it into acrobatics (20/30/0/20/0) and taking fleet of foot. This cleanses weakness and cripple on dodge.

Finally got the Light up the Darkness achievement!
Elementalist:
0/0/20/20/30 with IV,X for Earth | III, V for Water and V, VII, XI for Arcana
Scepter/Focus with superior sigil of air and energy
Some green armor with power, precision and cond damage stats with coral orbs
Orrian Truffle +40% endurance recovery food buff and some damage increasing nourishment
Glyph of Elemental Harmony, Arcane Shield, Arcane Blast, Signet of Air. Didn’t utilize my elite during the fight.
Basically this build allowed me to stay alive during the fight very easily and also granted me multiple ways to avoid damage or dodge stuff. For example focus skill 5 turns you invulnerable which is very useful in this fight.
Nothing special about the fight really. Only problem for me was the time. That is why I tried to damage the boss as much as possible while trying to collect the 8 orbs at the same time.
Phase 1: use focus skill 4 (air) to block projectiles and avoid stuff. Should be no problem to reach phase 2. Also use air skill 2 to destroy the rifts.
Phase 2: use earth skills and fire skills to damage the boss. Water skills can hinder the boss and same goes for air skills. Run around trying to avoid all damage and collect orbs when possible. Try to be fast and hopefully you can succeed.
Just managed it on my warrior. Trait’s were 30/20/0/10/10, and I used GS for the first phase for the skill3 evade through the AoE, phase 2 I used Rifle with piercing trait and extended bleed duration. I just got plain lucky circle strafing her.
Mostly p/t/v armor (trinkets were misc), berserker greatsword (Ebonblade), the Azure Railgun rifle.
Took along Hsig, Frenzy, Endure Pain, Fear Me, and Signet of Rage. Used SoR for swiftness in phase 2. Frenzy and Endure Pain didn’t get used, (I had been trying to burst her down a bit, but gave up on the attempt where I actually got her.)
It’s half luck beating her, but it definitely helps to be in a party so you can toss the big crosshair on her.
Did it on a Necromancer, 30/30/10/0/0, Rabid gear with Runes of the Undead. Scepter/Dagger and Staff, all condition damage spec, with Consume Conditions, Well of Power, Blood is Power, Epidemic and Avatar of Grenth in the slots, though I’m not sure I actually used the elite. Epidemic came in handy for rallying off a Vision of Mortality when it hit me (I guess that’s what happened). Basically I loaded her up with conditions and ran around while my Regeneration booster and Mango Pies kept me from dying.
It took me about 100 tries, 10-15 of which were just me figuring out how to look at the screen so that I could see the red circles well enough to learn the pattern and dodge when needed (I’m colorblind). I won’t be going for the 8 orbs of light achievement for sure.

I have beaten her on my ranger with Shortbow + Sword/Axe, 20/20/30/0/0 and berserker armor+trinkets.
I think it was very fun to fight her even though it took like 80 tries for me, but it felt very rewarding in the end having finally beaten her.
Everytime towards the end of the fight I got super nervous when I got her to like 5% HP and often failed because the time ran out but I just wanted to beat her. So in all this time while I tried to beat her I have done nothing else than farming some tickets and trying to beat her.
word “range” but from “to range”.
Elementalist.
I’ve just beaten her, after:
30 gold
100+ tickets
15 traits change.
0
15 II
10 VI
15 V
30 VI – V – XI
Scepter Dagger
Armor: PVT
Weapons: Berserker with sigil of battle and precision
Trinkets: mix of PVT and Berserker, rare exo ascended.
What actually helped me is remembering that I had many boosters in my bank from the achievement chests. Speed, armor, power, health regen greatly helped. Knowing the AOE patterns too.
I have mixed feelings about how I feel now. I’m proud of what I have ascomplished, but I also feel mostly relieved, like freed from an enormous burden. Let’s say it, it was a chore. I didn’t have fun. I did it for the sake of doing it, but the fight itself is very flawed: the dome is nuisible, so are the zergs under the arena. It was a real pain and I pulled my hair tons of time.
Never again.

I completed Liadri on a glass-cannon signet mesmer build.
Basically, signets removed conditions and gave me distortion.

I didn’t bother with kiting, as it was messing me up. Instead, I kept her blinded with gs and sword, used my aoe blind from f1 whenever clones got too close, and used focus 5 and my elite to cover me whenever things were looking grim. If all else failed, I made sure to gs2 whenever clones got close, so I could rally when they popped.
Going pure melee made it as fun, fast paced battle. Took me 40 or so tries easy, but I enjoyed pretty much every one of them.
Finally did it after 140 attempts or so on my full zerker Mesmer.
20 (III,X) / 20 (II,X) / 0 / 20 (VI,VIII) / 10 (III)
I used sword/pistol for the first phase and put up clones/reflects. For phase 2 I started off with phantasmal warden and then switch to GS for the remainder of fight. I also used Polymorph Moa on her at the end.
Not sure I want to go through the hell of the 8 orb achievement anytime soon. Big congrats though to those who pulled it off (especially with Mesmer!) And ofc a vid would be much appreciated
Elementalist, at least 60 tries.
Scepter/Dagger, Mostly knights equipment and celestial/berzerker ascendeds. Classic 0/10/0/30/30 with boon duration runes (probably suboptimal)
Lighting Flash, Cleansing Flames, Signet of Air, Fiery Greatsword.
Strategy:
Nothing specific in phase1. You can memorize large parts which is helpful.
Used Fiery Greatsword in phase2. Basic autoattacks (no need to face target) plus FGS#2 and FGS#5 whenever possible. Reposition to safe zones with FGS#3 and LF. Using 2 cantrips on short CDs also helps with clearing conditions and keeping up regen+vigor. FGS tends to run out before the fight ends. Used earth#1, air#2, fire#3,4 to finish it.
Dishing out too little damage was a problem at times. Same goes for unlucky orb pulls. Adding in more offensive gear helped eventually.
Overall:
Great fight in a very bad environment! (Floor, queues, dome, lag). Colour deficiency didn’t help with red rings on the floor mesh.
Just did it with my Thief… yay
My feelings are a little mixed. I love that type of content, hard and solo-able. But the execution was a little lacking.
Had to tone down my graphic settings to lowest, because I had to look through the glass floor at the zerg…
2nd why can’t I hit the orbs with projectiles? Even if they were hit-able, I think there is already going on enough in this fight without something pulling you randomly.
Other bugs, several times I had mobs and even gambits from other players on me.
Besides that it was an awesome fight, I hope the gauntlet returns with other bosses.
Just make it an arena on the ground with solid floor and open roof so the camera doesn’t shuffle around.
As for the class balance, besides Thief I tried it with Guardian, Necro and Warrior. I think I could do it with all 4, but decided that my Thief is inherently favored because of the great mobility. Over all Chars I estimate I had 60 tries.
Before beating Liadri, she made me want to curl up in a ball and cry myself to sleep.
After beating Liadri, she made me want to curl up in a ball and cry myself to sleep (tears of joy).
After roughly 50 tries (betwen my Mesmer and Engineer), I finally beat her last night with my Mesmer. I had to switch my usual PvE build to Shatter for more DPS and take her down quickly in Phase 2. This is one of those fights where one mistake could cost you everything, the longer you’re in the fight, the more chances you have at making a mistake (or the timer running out).
Mesmer
Traits – 10/10/0/0/30
Domination: Mental Torment, GS Training
Dueling: Phantasmal Fury, Deceptive Evasion
Illusions: Compounding Power, Illusionary Invigoration, Illusionary Persona
Skills – Ether Feast, Mantra of Resolve, Blink, Hounds of Balthazar
Weapons: Bonetti’s Rapier/Aetherized Pistol of Earth and Great Sword (all berserker stats) – the focus didn’t work out so well for me as my timing was pretty bad at deploying the Warden. lol
CoF Berserker gear, mixed ascended trinkets, cavalier and soldier accessories (for some toughness) with berserker jewel components.
Opinion:
I didn’t enjoy this fight at all – definitely the camera and the dome was an issue, and the lack of visibility of the AoE circle was another. This is probably the main gripes that people have with this fight – I didn’t experience any lag though. The one-shot mechanic was really cheap, especially with the above limitations. The timer was also a bit of an insult to injury. That said, it did feel really satisfying after I finally beat her, just like Mad King’s Clocktower – though I actually found the Clocktower more challenging. That actually took skill into consideration rather than relying on (some) luck. There is a pattern to Liadri, but the rift spawn locations are random – sometimes they pull you away from danger and sometimes into danger; the illusions run at you weirdly and sometimes don’t hit the white circles correctly; sometimes they explode on contact and other times there’s a slight delay, etc.
Adding to the list of “complaints”, soulbound gauntlet tickets, having to farm or pay sprockets + 20 silver if needed more, repair bills, waypoint bills if people don’t res you, being dead when you come out of the gauntlet, having to wait for the gauntlet queue (which is buggy), running to the gauntlet from the WP, etc. All of these things took away the fun factor of this event. I hope ANET takes these things into consideration in future mini-games/events – also hope they’ll ease off with so many one-shot mechanics and perma-stun/down (like the T1 whirlwind boss).
Is Liadri do-able? Yes, as all the people in this thread can attest to. Was it fun or challenging? No.
(edited by Phalanix.7542)
Was it fun or challenging? No.
To be fair…all the bad things about the fight really had nothing to do with the fight itself being fun or challenging. They’re all external factors that should have been weeded out in testing – something that ANet has a serious issue with.

Yes, but from a design perspective it’s unfair to blame the Liadri fight for all the other things that went on in the area. We have to look at them separately.
It’s like having a great meal at a restaurant, but then saying the food sucked because your waiter was rude.

The rude waiter would definitely have ruined the evening’s experience though; I wouldn’t have said the food sucked because of it. The external factors are part of the overall experience, basically that’s what I was saying in my post.
The rude waiter would definitely have ruined the evening’s experience though;
Right, and I agree that all the issues with the Gauntlet do lessen the experience. ANet really needs to seriously think about their testing methods before putting out content, this is a recurring theme with them.
I’m just saying that it’s unfair to say that the Liadri fight is to blame. The fight itself is great, there’s just too many external issues that didn’t get tested sufficiently that make the overall experience frustrating.

I did it with my ranger today after setting my mind to get her down, by not giving up no matter what.
Took me about 3 hours straight today, with about 100+tries over the past few days.
GS & SB
30/20/5/15/0 build, with troll urgent, SotH, SotW, SoS and RaO. I also used dodgefood.
Phase 1: kill orbs with GS, know aoe-patterns & be fast with all that, making her vulnerable to your damage.
Pase 2: weapon & pet-swich, activating Elite, SotH & SotW. SoS was my panicbutton (traited with marksmanship XI). Rest was kiting the kitten out of her and a lucky pull from an orb. SB cripple and daze have proven well also.
The great high after defeating her did not happen, maybe because the countless defeats before did not frustrate or annoy me, once my aim was clear.
I knew all i had to bring was knowing her patterns, react propperly, be determined, patient and a little lucky. I don`t consider myself a very skilled player, so the key for me was to stay calm during fights and defeats with an unshakable aim to get her down sooner or later. High situational awareness is required tho i believe, so some caffeine might help a lot
My boyfriend was a great help too, because he stood semi-afk nearby to ressurect me.
I like the gauntlet a lot. Challenging and a lot of fun thinking about builds, stats and weapon combinations to get the best results.
Gl & Hf everybody!
I finally did it. I don’t know how, I was too confused and frustrated being downed within the last 5% of Liadris HP… and I didn’t even count the orbs I used on her. But apparently, it was enough and apparently, my last scepter skills and burning condition, as well as my downed skills killed her and got me the Light Up the Darkness achievement.
I don’t know what to say, I’m so surprised it worked. I can’t think. I…. uh… omg…
I killed Liadri with my Mesmer alt yesterday for the first time and then tried the Light Up achievement with my guardian… I’m finished now…. wow…
Yeah the fight is challenging and annoying at the same time.
It took about 15 attempts for me after a friend pointed out the pattern in Phase 2.
Warrior GS/Rifle. 30 in Arms, 20 in Defense, 20 in Disc.
Piecing Shots, Crits cause Speed, and Bleed duration in Arms, Dogged March, the stance one in defense, and 25% Passive Speed, and Signet Reduction in Discp. Utility, Balanced Stance, Signet of Stam(not Sure it worked), and Endure Pain, and Rage Elite.
Phase 1 GS for mobility. Phase 2. Pop Rage for speed get to the safe spots and move Clockwise/Counter to stay in position while plugging the boss with 2/3/4 on rifle.
Wasn’t too bad but I’ve kiting mobs all over the worlds in other games as Ranged Classes.
Call of Fate[CoF]
Ehmry Bay
114 attempts on lone Ranger.
3 build change before getting the right balance of dps and survivability.
Axe/horn+Shortbow
30/20/20/0/0
Wouldn’t recommend using ranger since its like activating a loss of dps gambit due to pet being our significant dps and unfortunately it is hard to keep it alive with all those aoe in phase 2.
Good luck to my fellow rangers, you have to work harder to keep up with mesmers and warriors in this challenge.
So i beat the kitten yesterday, and i have to say i was really proud, happy, and excited that i did. I honestly think if you have good situational awareness you can beat her after all i have horrible internet speeds and lag almost all the time and i still beat her but it was with my main a thief which i know so very well. Anyway here what I used for any other thieves out there.
10/0/20/20/20, had mug, fleet of foot, uncatchable, remove condition when stealth, stealing causes u to stealth, and stealth regen. i might missed one but anyway. used apotheray (sorry if i spelled that wrong) armor. carrion trinkets and zerker weapons (was to cheap to buy new weapons for this and all the armor and trinkets i already had even though it’s not my main armor set.) Went with p/d for this fight. On the last crystal i threw down shadow refuge then threw the crsytal at her. then i drop caltrops on here and dodge twice on her to drop more caltrops. After that i summon thieves guild then used sneak attack to give her even more stacks of bleed. Once i sneak attack was over i used shadow strike to give her tormet and to gtfo. after that it was just dodge and use vital shot to keep the bleeds on her oh and if caltrops comes back drop it again because she’ll walk right through it. Anyway it’s still hard but it’s all about dodging and not getting hit by all her attacks that can down you. Remember if you see red circles dodge or evade other wise you’ll be a dead mofo.
(edited by Nizio Nightblade.8109)
Necro ~25 attempts
0/30/20/0/20
Scepter/Dagger – consume conditions/spectral walk/spite sig/locust sig/mistfire wolf
Would be way easier if rifts and shadows didn’t appear on blind spots or on top of me…
To make this work just destroy the 1st rift, use DS to pull the 1st shadow (to save hp) and then just strafe to dodge attacks while luring the last 2 shadows.
Take your time and don’t risk, P2 will be way faster then you think, so look for rifts and lure shadows away from orbs for security.
As soon as you enter P2 hit spectral walk and summon wolf, should give you a few secs to adapt and target liadri in case you didn’t have a team to call target, and spam heal on cooldown. Spite sig can give more leeway with slowdown but not really necessary. Rid yourself of conditions with heal and #4 and just run around halfway between the wall and the center while auto-attacking.
Liadri should be down in seconds if you’re geared for maximum condition damage.
Going to try 8 orb achieve now but my guess is that i won’t get much luck on necro, the option with the guardian to redirect damage seems a safer bet.
70 attempts. (I REFUSED to retrait for any fight)
30(I,IX,XI)/25(III/VII)/0/0/15(III)
Don’t fight during first phase…i really don’t understand why some people are determined to attack her (unless u are a vigor mesmer).
The key, imo, was cripple removal and moving in a circle with just the right diameter. I literally wasted 40 tickets b/c I was told to circle strafe the edge of the arena. Rather, I circle strafed about half way to the center so there was a much shorter distance to cover. took about 7 or 8 tries after that.
I’d say it was challenging and fun.
“A release is 7 days or less away or has just happened within the last 7 days…
These are the only two states you’ll find the world of Tyria.”
Ranger (7 tries)
- Berserker / Superior Rune of Ranger with Third Place Medal ammy and celestial trinkets.
- Greatsword (sigil of energy) / Shortbow (sigil of purity) — both zerker stats
- Signet of the hunt / signet if stone (traited with sig of beastmaster) / lightening reflexes (for orbs, damages so destroys orb after pull)
- 30 (sig of beast / piercing arrows / predators instinct) / 15 (primal reflexes) / 15 (wilderness knowledge) / 10 (natures protection)
- Lifesteal food (dragon candy) and power maintenance oil
Remembering to stutter step really helps! Don’t forget to circle near the middle of the arena since the circular geometry naturally results in a shorter arc to safety. It’s kind of like passing on the inside of a curve, right?
Note to rangers: anything involving your pet is basically worthless (signet of renewal, empathic bond, shared anguish to name a few). Keep a bird for phase 2 and swap when you think it can do the most damage before getting blown up. I did almost all my damage with shortbow although I did have to swap to GS at the very end to kill and orb and then [Maul] Liadri for the win. Good luck!

Can finally post here!
Mesmer — all you need to know as a mesmer is Phantasmal Warden casted while Liadri is doing the swirling whip attack pwns her and takes away about 40% of her hp. All you will need to do is land 2 of this and then finish her off. I used a 2-3 day old lvl 80 mesmer to beat her so if I can do it on a mesmer that I havent played a lot on before, anyone can do it.
Oh and on phase 2, in order to avoid aoe, you just walk to where the previous aoe just finished, it only alternates into safe spot>unsafe spot.
Over 100 tries, finally beat her in downed state and a split second before the clones and aoe got me. That was so close.

Just want to say thanks to EVERY SINGLE PERSON who was there to support, exchange tips, and most importantly revive me for countless times, basically whoever have been going through hell with me. If u guys happen to read this post, I am the mesmer named Sharon Florence in game. Wish u guys best luck in case you haven’t beat her yet.
Comments and my tips about the fight:
Bugs and glitches and technical issues aside, the fight was hard. It penalizes you for any mistake you make and you have little to recover from such mistakes.
Phase 1:
- Sword #2 and Blink for desperate escape to safe zone.
- Focus #4 and #5 to reflect her attacks so you worry less about your health and more about positioning to grab the orbs
- GS #5 to push back visions either to get the orb or when you get cornered by them
But I think my best advice in phase 2 is: you don’t need to face Liadri all the time, in fact, you don’t need to have LoS on her at all with mesmer, it’s more important to turn camera around to be extremely aware of the surroundings. Sometimes, those Visions can sneak up on you and go boom. Or those random pulling orbs.
Phase 2:
- Kite her around but stay near to centre (but not on the central tile since it gets hit by AoE all the time) to get to safe spot more quickly, even if you are crippled. This way you can save your dodge when you get pulled by the cosmic orb and when Liadri get a jump on you.
- I think the best way to deal dmg to her on this phase is via summons or conditions since yourself will have to run non-stop and probably won’t be facing her much to deal direct dmg by yourself to her.
Last of all, I think the fight again yet sill favors full dps specced over more tanky type because by killing her faster, you are less likely to make mistake over time because if you do, it’s all over.
Best of luck to everyone out there still fighting the good fight against her.
PS: About to set her on fire.

Took 30ish tries, but with 3 invuln buttons, a buttload of vigor and superior sigil of energy, I really had alot of outs.
Thief condition build
0, 0, 30, 20, 20.
I used TG elite during one of the AoE blasts so that they would at least get some damge in before being evaporated by the next set of blasts.
I found it useful to time C&D with her lunges as well as steal + C&D in order to not be single shotting each time with a pistol. Condition brought her down very fast.
I would also intentionally take damage in order to utilise leeching venoms (with spider venom) as well as dropping refuge soley to use the lifesteal effect which took big chunks from her health.
Ranger, Rampager gear and Zerker accessories
30/30/10/0/0
Used S & WH/SB. Sig of Hunt, Sig of Stone, LR, Rampage As One
Took me close to 200 tries to get all the mechanics down and the timing right but I can honestly say that was the most gratifying feeling I’ve had beating a boss in an MMO.
Speaks for itself haha xP Did the 8 orb acheiv twice :P

I finally beat her with my nec (power) – using woomera.9841’s build and tipps (thanks so much!!!) i made a few changes: in DS lifeforce stays longer 25% insted of moving faster in DS – while waiting for the doubles to walk in the white circles stay in DS and refill lifeforce when not in DS with axe 2 or staff 1.
My stats where a bit more offensive, less condi-dmg, more kritdmg – so I finally managed to kill her quickly in phase 2 while in lich-form. So i could avoid the problem with the rifts, because lich-form = stability.
Thief, using the same no-stealth trickery daggers build I use for everything.

Signet of Malice, Signet of Shadows, Caltrops, Shadowstep, Daggerstorm (with mad king birds)
I competed the whole fight wielding two daggers, maliciously assasinating orbs as soon as they spawned, and executing drive by Deathblossoms and caltrops drops in phase 2. Daggerstorm was a pre-emptive ace in the hole for a full heal and breathing room, shadowstep and my 20s cooldown steals were used for mobility and to eliminate orbs before they could fire, and caltrops was used to slow down clones and liadri in phase 1, and to hammer home damage in phase 2.
Took about 40 tries before I nailed a skill selection. Putting away the shortbow and swapping shadow refuge for SoS finally enabled me to pull it off. Turns out just plain using better timing and maneuvering was more effective than attempting to kite or waste my timer on stealthing. Good fun, and never let some guide tell you how to finish content XD

Just kite with any ranged weapon, and she’s doable. Which pretty much sums up all of the bosses. Freaking kite-fest with no skill involved.

Just beat her as a Warrior, probably took me ~150 tries. More like 75 if you don’t count deaths due to framerate drops/lag.
0/30/30/0/10; Rabid gear; S/Sh & Longbow.
Let me just say, as frustrating as fighting her over and over and over again and losing was, the feeling of satisfaction you get when you see that [expletive deleted] drop makes it all worth it.
Jade Quarry Forever.
30/20/0/10/10 full Rabid Engineer, with flamethrower, grenade kit, and rocket jump. FT is godly for killing rifts, and since grenade kit doesn’t care which way you’re facing, kiting during phase 2 is trivial. Just run in circles spamming AoEs behind you, and she’ll go down.
————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————
I liked it. There was enough damage going out that you couldn’t ignore your health bar, the 1-shot mechanics stressed good awareness and reflex, and the DPS race in phase 2 required you to at least be somewhat decent. It was extremely hard, but also very rewarding to finally beat. I’ve now constantly got my new mini out
Ferguson’s Crossing
Wow! Finally got her after75+ tries! I admit that I was originally a nerf sympathizer, But when AN didn’t nerf I surfed the net and kept trying. Now I have something to really be proud of! Must credit Myrkridiantv for posting a build which helped me beat cripple and posting a great video. However, the real trick is doing it enough to learn the pattern. Sharp learning curve but definitely not impossible. In the future however, AN should consider eliminating the penalties (cost, long run back, etc) which only discourage people from sticking with it long enough to win.
What an achievement! Well done to everyone!
