This could have been my favorite living story ever…

But the haphhazard design of the achievements ruined it for me. And yes, I have the meta, that’s not what I’m talking about.

I’ve wasted far too much time trying to get an achievement only to have another platform fail and be denied it.

Just earlier a level 20 person was standing there, in the lane with us, and I whispered him/her and told them they’re probably too low a level for this event and asked how long they’d been playing and they said 24 hours. Then I added them to friends and checked their achievement points. 4100. Nice troll that.

That person was down all the time. Constantly. They didn’t care that they were affecting other people. They went into the lane and immediately went down on their platform.

I don’t know why Anet thinks this is fun but the combination of the achievements, having to have all five platforms finish them successfully, the load screen in which fails the achievement for you sometimes before you even try to get it, and the home server/overflow problems have combined to make this my least favorite living story to date.

Which is a shame because the marionette fight is a good fight. I just don’t want to feel the way I do when I miss that achievement due to people in other lanes who can’t do the content.

The main problem is that there is no real way of reporting them ingame, there is no option for “griefing” and I am pretty sure A.Net can’t track griefing down easily, yet alone push it in the right way.

I’ve gotten one of the dodging achievements. I’ve successfully dodged the marionette attacks at least a half a dozen times. Every single one of those times, my platform succeeded but another failed. And this is on TC mostly. This is a server that beats the fight often.

And then, twice I came off the load screen only to find out I’d already failed, because I’d been knocked down by an attack that happened while I was loading in.

I don’t know why anyone would think that kind of thing is fun.

There are achievement trolls because of you and your type of players. If you keep whining in forums for every single achievement you couldn’t get, some other players will start to troll your achievements which will increase the whining level in forums (as if it is not at max level nowadays -_-)

Of course my claim about trolls only includes players that cause a failure because they don’t want others to get achievement.

Anet did say they wanted to make a game that made it hard to troll people and they tested events to make them hard to troll. If you think me complaining on the forums is causing the problem, you probably aren’t listening much to map chat. Plenty enough complaints in map chat.

If you’re saying those people are causing the problem by complaining, well, the design of the achievements gives them reason to complain.

Well, open world is open world. There could be 99 level 1 chars and you the only level 80 and it would still be ok.
Why would you report the players? Because they play the game by participating in a open world event? They do not grief, they play the game.

It is ANets kittened open world raid design that is the failure. But hey, they call it their new and exciting invention, so they will stick with this kitten for all time, because it would be to hard for them to accept their own design failure…

You have a level for a reason. Attrition mechanics exist for a reason. Anyone playing the game long enough to get that many points is doing it to troll.

Actually my way of playing is trying to support the community. When someone is trolling, they’re not supporting the community.

I’m asking Anet to make events less trollable… and make the game more fun for players like me. I’m sure taking the “random” elements out of getting achievements won’t ruin the game for more people than leaving them in.

They are trolling you because they are a bad player that can’t dodge. Or better yet, they just don’t care about the achievement?

You know maybe this event would be better if it is “instanced”. Cough Cough.

You know everytime the wvw map completion topic come up. Someone would say to find a group of like minded people to get the poi. Maybe you should find a group of like minded people that want to do the achievement together.

How long do you really have to experience MMO’s to learn that any content that can be griefed, will be.

Developers should know better. This is one reason hard content became instanced.

The grief mechanic is there, so expect it, you have no control over it. Blame the team that shortsightedly brought it in.

Quite honestly, I dont’ think people are griefing you on purpose. The chance let’s say 5×5=25 people all dodged the attack isn’t high.

I think Anet just put those achievement, because they are running of ideas. They have to add some achievement for the events.

No, I don’t think they’re griefing me on purpose, but that level 20 person didn’t care at all that they shouldn’t have been there.

However, my main point is I’m fustrated that the times I’ve dodged everything, no achievement. How many times do I need to keep doing the same event over and over again to get something I should have already had?

The platforms are bad design, even the designers acknowledged this.

But hey, Vayne. The event will be gone soon, and noone is forcing you to do so. If you do not like a LS, just don’t do it. The achievements are optional. Just guest on another server maybe, one that finishes the event every single time.
Or you could set up a raidgroup and camp an overflow to “fix” the open world problem.

Strange enough to see you moan over a concept you defended all the time. The LS and open world raid content.

It’s strange to see you misinterpret me…oh wait. lol

I’m not complaining about open world raids and I’m not complaining about the living story. I’m complaining about five specific achievements.

I didn’t make the game about achievements. Anet did. Therefore Anet should make the achievements at least reasonably fair. These achievements aren’t.

I like the living world over all and STILL like the idea of open world raids.

One bad design decision doesn’t negate an entire concept. It would be like telling the people to rebuild by entire house because they chose the wrong color carpeting.

In the open world, players can go whereever they want.

Open world. It is open, not closed. It might be more dangerous for a low level player to go to Orr, but if he/she wants to do so, that’s OK.
Look, some companies promote their game like this. In LotRO there is an event to bring hobbits under the level 10 to high level places. So this can even be part of the game design.

If people make it to places, they can try to participate. Open world content is open for everyone. They can die a 1000 times in a minute and they would not be grieving. It is their own decision.

That is why challenging content in many games is instanced. The designers can set “rules” for the players. Which makes the design or the event predictable for both, Devs and players.

ANet for some random reason thinks this kind of balancing is bad and places their raid content in the open world.

Now you blame the players for participating? You call them trolls and grievers? Sorry you got it all wrong. They have every right to be there.

In Soviet Tyria, ANet trolls you.

Well it’s easy enough for Anet to have put a thing on the gate to keep out anyone under level….and made it clear it’s for that level. Anet could easily do that.

It would help. There are always solutions. The whole instancing thing will bring the very problems I left other MMOs to avoid.

Locking out players from open world content?

Sounds like instancing to me. Why do you have such a hard time with instances for content on the one hand, but want to instance the content on the other.
Be it layers, level borders, gear check, whatever, it is still just instancing the event.

Open world content is for everyone. If they separate the players in the open world, they can just instance it. Otherwise it would erode the whole idea of open world content.

No Sir. Locking out players from below a certain level from certain zones isn’t instancing. It’s just logic. The other thing Anet could do is increase the cost of being in a higher level zone to the point where it’s not worth it.

This is about low attrition in the open world, nothing else.

Edit: I didn’t mean to lock them out of the zone…just the platforms.

The bad design is to structure a game into servers and split the PvE community for the sake of WvW home server pride and then have them all guesting on one server to be able to do it, queuing for days. This is a contradiction they don’t even dare to explain

Vayne, maybe this isn’t the game for you.

I feel bad for saying that and don’t really believe that but it is repeated so often on these forums by people who seek to dismiss every single person who has criticism for anything Anet does.

I think these forums are a great place to give feedback and hopefully Anet addresses your concerns.

I wish they would make this boss fight permanent. I’d like to see a few tweaks though that take into consideration the problems you’ve experienced.

Sure, if you do not let those players enter the platform, you are instancing the platforms for a certain player group (let’s say level 50+). There you go.

Or your other idea is to rework the whole open world, instead of just instancing the events you want to be instanced, sort of…

I agree with OP, there are these little things that kinda ruined the Marionette experience. When you depend on others to get achievements, then there is a problem. The avoid achievements should be awarded regardless of what the other platforms do, all that should matter is what your platform does because that is the only place where you can put your skill to the test and, you know, ACHIEVE something; if you kill the champ, destroy the regulator and do the avoid and all other platforms fail and the entire event fails, you should still get the achievement.

Otherwise, a great fight and I would appreciate to see more stuff like this in the future. Maybe they’ll learn from their mistakes and polish the rough edges.

In theory the platforms are already instanced. Just ask Raine. lol

The difference is it’s still open world. That is anyone who meets the requirement can enter that part of the fight. Calling it instancing is just playing semantics. What you’re doing is preserving the open world experience for the levels it’s meant to server.

Anet could have made it an 80th level thing and leveled everyone to 80 like they did for other content and that would work too. I honestly don’t know why they didn’t.

This had puzzled me at the very start of the event. Why no upscaling?
But the answer is obvious, upscaling only works for a whole zone. They would have had to create an instance for the event to level everyone to 80, but for whatever reason they didn’t.

The platforms are part of the event, they are in the zone. You are not porting to some other instance, just some distance.
I do not think ANet can code separate instances connected to the same event. It has to be all on the same map.

Because the whole raid would have had to be put in an instance to make the platform part of the event.

Than this would have been an instanced raid. That’s why.
