To the warrior in GF, I hope you don’t think you won that fight heh. Even with the guardian disabling me into your combos, I was perfectly fine until anet decided it’d be cool if when I got knocked down, it never ended, and popping stability did nothing, so I had to lay there unable to do anything until dead.

Every GF member has put in many many hours (some of them hundreds of hours) at fight club, none of them are dumb enough to think you fight at a FC with stacks. Are you sure you didn’t simply witness a GF member removing his stacks to participate?

The reason why groups stack is to reach the AoE cap and reduce damage. It’s also important to do mid-fight to “reset” the fight. What I mean by this, is that the regrouping allows everyone to heal up to full HP via water field blasts and gain almost full stacks of might via empower. In a sense, it returns your party to the condition it was in before the fight even started.
Regardless of it’s many benefits, stacking makes for boring meta, it is greatly over used, often at the expense of momentum and positioning, and in my opinion is used more as a crutch for bad positioning and movement, than its tactical advantages.
Lastly, people need to understand that there is a very big difference between a hammer train and a balanced comp. The fact that 4 warriors use hammers in a 15-man comp doesn’t make it a hammer train. Not even close, to be honest.
So over 26% of the group is using hammers, but that isn’t a hammer train? Where is the magical cut off, 80%? You are taking the term too literally anyway, it is more about the heavy defense ball formation with hammers, at 4 I would argue the number of hammers is irrelevant as far as the label goes.

Also, the criticism isn’t directed at [Ark]. You seem to run the hammer/staff group very well. It’s directed more at the game mechanics that rewards stacking up but doesn’t punish it. It’s another example of how Anet fails to understand risk vs. reward. Anything with a huge upside should potentially have a huge downside, and it should be up to the enemy player to recognize and exploit that. .
In older MMOs training meant focusing someone down via single target damage and CC chains. This required good awareness, management of your cooldowns, and target swapping. You call target on enemy players based upon the threat of their class, their health level, whether they are out of position, whether they have used their defensive cooldowns, their heal, etc. In this game it just means spamming your AoEs on top of your targeted driver as he moves into a clump of enemy players.
I think Niim made a really good observation in the two different styles of open field fights in the game right now. There are fights where you are using your target on enemy players and fights where you are using your target on a friendly player. I prefer fights where the target is being used on enemy players because I think that style of play requires more individual skill and is more fun (for me, personally – of course).
I can see where others might find the other style more fun.

The meta on GvG has shifted oozo. You will always have some form of stacking due the combo field mechanics but if you watch how Agg/Ark have lost the fights you will see it.
As for stacking up to kill zergs….that won’t be changing. Hammer trains will also stay prevalent due to them including tankier classes. Remember your going balls deep against 4-1 odds
Typically, we kite and spread out against such groups so they don’t have a “clump” of players to train into with aoe cc/dmg which gives the driver no obvious target to go after. That can work if you are in a wide open field, but not if the hammer/staff stackers have any kind of choke available to them.
And, I’m talking about fighting these types of groups when we have less numbers than them. Not the other way around.

Played a little tonight. Remembered why I hadn’t all week – there is nothing impressive out there. Some group from BP – Borlis Savers guild – actually sat on a wall for ten solid minutes and refused a duel. Other players are downright disappointing.
We don’t teach our people to duel. In fact, exactly the opposite, I tell them to not chase random people at all in WvW. That is not to say we don’t have members that don’t look for these kinds of fights, but as an organized group we prioritize taking and holding towers over random fighting.

Kind of. I’m certain we could have taken a couple more rounds off of GF, but we had some l2p issues and miscommunication about builds and their role in our team comp. We’ve talked about them in-guild and are currently fixing them so we can hopefully win the next time we fight GF
Also, Ark and GF run more balanced comps, whereas Agg was traditionally more frontline-heavy. Meta is shifting more towards balanced comps, as it should, so I’m sure you’ll see a lot of diversity soon enough. That is, if GvG isn’t utterly neutered thanks to the AC fanboys we have creating our content.

WvW is a game of capture the castle. If you want a game where the goal is to rack up a body count, go play games where that is objective, like call of duty rather then GW2 WvW. I think by now it should be abundantly clear that is was the dev’s vision of WvW is. More to the point, that’s entirely what its been since day 1 and every add on to WvW has been to encourage the dynamic of capture the castle over racking up a kill streak. I’m not going to cry tears into my beer over the lack of 1 on 1 fights and not getting rewards for wiping zergs. I rather enjoy WvW, and in my mind, winning means having the highest score at the end of the week. How you get there is really not important.

I do however love to build an AC ontop of said wall and then jump down to kill the skill group that seems to think they can wipe my forces with said AC up on the wall raining death on them. Man up and except that you sit on ACs all day. Man up when you zerg gets caught in the open you get wiped. Man up that you need 3 or 4 times the numbers to kill your opponents.

Wow… considering the past 10 or so comments on this thread, I truly feel that I am right where I belong. Standing on tower/keep walls is boring, and if you have to throw an AC on a wall while ‘jumping off of the wall’ to fight in ac range with superior numbers against a skill group…. you should uninstall.
Also one more thing. PvDoor is also boring. I am, however, having a blast hitting pvdoorers from behind while they have tunnel vision on that gate at 50%.

In Anet’s game design there is a huge risk in stacking… have you seen what happens to a pug zerg running into a tower with a few superior AC’s? It’s there, they designed it, you can’t really complain that there isn’t a counter to stacking when 10 can defend a structure against 50 if they don’t stand on the walls staring at people. What most people are looking to do is open field fight but Anet has already made it clear that isn’t really their intention with the game type (probably because it makes the servers crap their pants) so yeah, wvw isn’t designed around what we want, doesn’t mean it isn’t designed.

Making an argument based on ranking is stupid. If you haven’t figured out by now, the Glicko2 implementation anet is using is flawed. Rank means nothing.
