“Walk with the pack. In the eyes of Wolf, we are all brothers and sisters.”
(edited by Lindelle.3718)
I’ll go first of course!
I chose wolf. I never played GW1 but when I was interested in this game and looking and classes and races, the norn ranger just screamed at me (and I still love it!) I decided to pick wolf because of the pack mentality, strength in numbers, loyalty, etc, just made sense for a ranger. Also I’m a dog person.
It kind of grew as I played the game and now I have fun doing what I can to have a total wolf “theme” around my character. I use both wolf pets, Howler, I have the Goedulf mini, Call of the Wild amulet, and the ‘Wolf’ T3 armor. I just wish Become the Wolf and Mistfire Wolf didn’t suck…
So, what totem did you pick and why?
(edited by Lindelle.3718)
Raven. My Norn’s an Engineer, so it made sense she’d be one of Raven’s crew. After all, Raven represents wisdom/trickery. Made sense to me, at least.
Bear. because bear family are distantly related to the raccoon family, or so I read in the internet. Why is this important? well because…. oh, just look at my name
Seriously though, bear is strong and nurturing, which I feel is a fit for what I imagine my female norn warrior’s persona would be…
I chose Wolf. Just the loyalty they have with their pack in real life was the reason for my choice tbh. I rolled first as an Asuran Engineer but wasn’t feeling it too much, so re-rolled as a female Norn Warrior, love it. I like to have the feeling of loyalty while also having that added ferocity, idk…
Bear, because I forgot to change it to Wolf, in Character creation. XD
Dragon. And not that poseur, Jormag. The only dragon worth worshiping, Glint.
Dead, you say? So are Owl and Wolverine, and they have their adherents. Glint died for all of Tyria, not just for the norn.
Glint embodies dualities – both wisdom and courage. Strength and subtly. An evil and mindless origin, and an individual, heroic fate. Like Glint, we all have the ability to change and become more then we are.
From GW2 Wiki
“Raven is one of the more prominent deities of the norn. Raven represents cunning, trickery, and knowledge and is the animal spirit of the norn that is associated with the Underworld and the spirits of the dead.”
Fits my Necromancer perfectly
Snow Leopard. My Norn ranger has… trust issues. She finds it difficult to get close to others due to her troubled childhood (indeed, she joined the Priory primarily because the thought of exploring remote, unknown frontiers, far away from other people, to be irresistibly enticing), so she’s embraced a spirit that revels in independence, stealth and unconventional approaches.
Wolf. My Guardian BigElk embraces loyalty, ferocity, and strength in numbers.
Snow Leopard! My ele likes the snow leopard because its all about self-reliance, wits, and curiosity to explore the world, as well as the instinct and cunning to stay on top. Snow Leopard, like many other large hunting cats, and sometimes be social when it suits them. Snow Leopards are known to take down wild game that are 4 time their own body weight, so imagine a Norn weighing in on that challenge.
Also, Snow Leopards are somewhat non Nornly. IRL Snow Leopards live in high mountainous areas in Asia/Siberia.
Bear! BEAR!
“You’ve discovered the Bear’s den! We should celebrate by fighting!”
“Bear approves of you. I can feel her little tail wagging in my heart.”
Raven.
It may seem like an odd choice for a Guardian, but the inital idea I had for my character was to roleplay an ‘angelic’ valkyrie, and the raven seemed unique as a bird. Later, I learnt thatt, not only was the raven a revered animal of Viking mythology (Odin had two ravens and two wolves), there was also a common association between valkyries and ravens: some myths revovev around the idea of valkyries transforming into ravens. There is a poem titled “The valkyrie & the raven” : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hrafnsm%C3%A1l
Lastly, ravens are known for being intelligent and crafty animals, something that the Vikings (and the Norn) revere them for. My character, as a guardian, bases her martial and magical abilities on knowledge and cunning. Since she joined the Durmand Priory (which is a scholarly faction), and two of the Guardian elites involve the use of books, I feel like I picked the right totem when I went with Raven for my guardian.

Bunny, … because.
Raven.
A guardian is a fighter and protector, but I think that you need knowledge and wisdom too as a guardian. I also chose the priory, so my guardian is as much a fighter as he is a scholar.
Besides, if you’re putting your life on the line to protect others you’re going to face death all the time. Raven felt like a logical choice.
Bear for my Norn ranger char, mostly because bear is my totem in real live as well. :-) Anyhow, bear fits her very well: ferocious strength combined with a gentle, protecting nature. She has a friendly, open, relaxed personality – just don’t get on her nerves …
These are some really interesting replies. Its neat how different classes choose different totems and the reasons are very good and make sense-lore wise.
Ranger – Snow Leopard – Snow Leopard represents independence, strategy, and laughter in the face of danger and is considered to be stealthy and solitary. (From the wiki)
Warrior – Bear – Fortitude, Self-reliance, Might
Both easy choices for the classes.
Raven, to help my Necro connect with the spirit world!
Snow Leopard!
It’s my favorite big cat and suits my ranger C:
Wolf. Loyalty to the pack above all else.
My ranger’s spirit is snow leopard, it both suits her demeanor and preferred approach to challenges, strategy over brute force. Snow leopard is also deeply tied to the backstory I thought up for her, as a result she pays more reverence to the spirits than many norn.
My warrior’s spirit is bear, because great might makes for great legends.
My thief originally choose snow leopard for his independence and stealthyness but after visiting owl abattoir in snowden drifts she decided to follow owl.
“To hear Bear or Wolf is to know fear, for their enemies cannot overcome them. To hear Owl is to know peace, for her enemies will never hear her coming.”

Snow Leopard! – Thief (WvW Roaming at it’s Best)

Jormag ate Owl.
Tell that my char she’s not gonna believe it.^^
Or better she knows what happened to Owl but she does not believe Owl is actually dead, no matter what her Havroun claimed. Believes are strange things, you know?

While I hate to also say ‘Owl is dead’ because it is “confirmed”, well, it is. The nice thing is Owl still has a lot of followers. Even though she was consumed, people still believe in her teachings. I had always thought it would be interesting if there was a norn who’s totem spirit was Owl and was even more vengeful against Jormag and the Icebrood BECAUSE of this spirit loss.
And on a side note… I wonder if they have plans for the other spirits and their roles down the line, specifically the lost spirits Wolverine and Ox (Dolyak)?
But if you have read flavor text of certain ascended gear and done story lines and whatnot, we also know there is a Minotaur, Hare, Wurm, Gorilla, and Otter, as the ones I can think of off of the top of my head. Minotaur and Hare I imagine we have seen enough of what with Minotaur in the personal story and Hare having his own heart quest and acolytes. But I am especially curious about the two lost spirits who also helped the norn escape Jormag.
Raven for my ranger: “There is a time for action and a time for thought”. Strengh and dexterity are worthless without wisdom and thought. Apart from that raven can always fly away when things get out of control and they are companions to the God of my fathers fathers, Wotan. So all in all raven seems to be a perfect fit.
Wolf. Loyalty to the pack above all else.
forever
Raven for my necro
and Bear for my warrior
Bear.
Because I play a Soldier profession, which kind of resembles a ‘big warrior’, so does a bear. It resembles strength.
For my ranger and warrior, Wolf. Loyalty and devotion to your friends and family.
For my elementalist, Coyote (with some backup snark from Raven). Like Coyote, she spreads interesting chaos and teaches by example. Often, bad example. Note: She’s kinda nuts.
For my charr necromancer, Raven. Yes, a charr necromancer that follows raven. Being a shaman put him below the lowest level of charr society, but sometimes even charr need to deal with the otherworldly. That was where his gifts were, and that’s the role he played. Until his warband died. Then his next warband died. The third warband died before he could even join them at their duty post. He fled before a fourth met the same fate.
