Want to have fun?
Gem store is that way —→>>>
Probably intended to keep people from joining a group, dying, leaving instance, then rejoining the group instance with 5 more “free” lives without losing progress.
Gimme a break this is just to push people to the gem store.

I’m not usually one to complain about the gem store, but it’d be nice to know if this is a bug or not.
It’s a confirmed feature to get us to buy the unlimited coin:
https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/support/bugs/Super-Adventure-Box-No-Continue-1-Life/first#post2763872
If you get a game over and return to the hub and attempt to immediately re-enter a world, you will have 1 life.
If you have a continue coin and use it when you get a game over or buy one from Moto when you get a game over, you will receive the 5 lives you are expecting.
TLDR: Get continue coins and use them for your five life bundles.
Also if you have 5 or 10 continue coins when you get a game over, you can use them in bulk for 25 or 50 lives
The reason we did the 1 life thing is because we found that lives were not meaningful if you can just pop back in, catch up with your party or die once and catch up with them. Now they are. We also added Continue Coins in each Zone chest, and they are in JP chests as well. And you can buy 5 of them for one Bauble Bubble.
But you said:
Another commonality among games in the genre (which I’m not aware of having a name yet… let me know if you’ve heard of one) is that lives are extremely cheap, and you blow through them. Lives are like HP in an RPG or ammo in an FPS. You go in EXPECTING to lose a LOT. If you interpret losing a life as “failure” then you will have a miserable time. It would be like feeling like you “fail” when you take damage in a turn based role playing game. Instead, if you see every death as another learning experience, you’ll have a much better time. Kind of like the way your armor rating increases when you take damage in Skyrim. So part of preparing for a TM run, you’ll be ‘leveling up’ your ‘life meter’ by collecting as many lives and Continue Coins as you can.
Our analogue to HP doesn’t refill after closing the game and starting over.
Originally, continue coins allowed us to “continue” our progress. Now, continue coins are analogous to HP refill potions with the gem store selling us an “unlimited life” item.
One of the big reasons that “I Wanna Be The Guy” and “Super Meat Boy” and other similar games are fun and popular is that you’re expected to fail over and over, but the time of return is nearly instantaneous. If you fail, you laugh it off and try something new. Limiting us with a consumable item (and selling us unlimited life in the gemstore) makes failure an outright failure.
The reason we did the 1 life thing is because we found that lives were not meaningful if you can just pop back in, catch up with your party or die once and catch up with them. Now they are.
This whole exploit was eliminated in Tribulation Mode by not allowing party members to join their party once they outright die.
Additionally, you can still do just that in normal mode except you’re back with five lives.

Just a complete garbage cash grab when coupled with how much harder they made it to get baubles and that fact that once again the engine is giving much of the population fits due to the ever increasing lag. This game just gets worse and worse.
Cash shop. Nuff said.
First time Guild Wars 2 has something that can truly be considered Pay 2 Win. I sincerely hope this is not a sign of how year two will turn out.

I don’t mind you consider that to be meaningful for the game. However, with the infinite coin in BLTP, I can only consider this change is to benefit your cash shop and make the game p2w. This is really annoying when the BLTP should not be selling items that break the game balance just for creating that extra income but upset the majority of your players.
You guys realize it was a bug right? You could get unlimited lives by just leaving and coming back in. That’s quite a stretch even for haters to consider fixing that “pay to win”.

So you removed lives because it wasn’t meaningful, but you spam continue coins everywhere, so they’re still not meaningful. What was the point again?
So is there anything we can do to get back to 5 lives without spending continue coins?
Switching to a different Zone or World doesn’t do it, switching modes (Normal > Infantile for example) doesn’t do it. Exiting to Rata Sum and going back in doesn’t do it.
What if we log out to Character Select?
Log out completely?
Wait a day?
I know continue coins are cheap and easy to get, but I’d still like to know what my options are.

I’ve done multiple JPs and not a single coin dropped from the chests. At least increase their drop rate.

Are the Continue Coins random or did you guys forget about some of the JPs? Did Hidden Garden earlier and there was neither a Continue Coin nor an Empyreal Fragment.

Agreed.

The drop is not 100%. This is the same as it was in April.

Is this effecting solo players a bug then? Because lifes do mater when your solo.

Because gem store, nuff said.
Now give them your money.

OK, but I play solo… and the first time I step into SAB, I have one life. And if I die, having to start over SAB from the very start- I have one life. How am I going to catch up with my party if I’m alone?
This seems like you being unable to figure out glitchy mechanics and thus just going ‘ah, fuggit, just nerf it- we can think of a reason to fool those monkeys playing the game later’.
Or, we could just get to what’s really going on- aka- gem store continue coin.
I get the point about the lives being meaningless when reset to 5, but outright drop to 1 is beyond harsh. How about a happy compromise, right down the middle, and set lives to 3?
It just leaves a sour taste to implement this one-life-on-gameover feature while debuting the Infinite Continue Coin. Any argument towards the cheapening of lives is undermined by the mere existence of the coin.

Are you sure? About April that is. The rate back then certainly seemed like 100% or high enough to be indistinguishable. I don’t ever remember opening a chest without getting a coin back then. Even for the easy ones just sitting out in the open in Queensdale.

I remember in April opening about 10 JP chests and getting no coins at all, while my friend got them more than 50% of the time, we did JPs together just to get coins, and i ended up disappointed by the end.
It’s just RNG.
Remember that you can transfer gold into gems. Yes the rates are higher, but so has the gold gain been the last month. At least you dont nec have to spend real money.
I used to be a power ranger, now not sure anymore
This change just strikes me as bad overall. SAB is technically a ‘living world’ event or whatever, but to me it seems more like a nice fun break from the normally serious gameplay. It should be something a little more casual, a little more focused on all around good fun.
Unfortunately this 1 life thing seems to move towards a more difficult, and somewhat annoying, gaming experience. I don’t see this as a good thing at all. As much as I appreciate and enjoy the nostalgia that an 8-bit style game brings (and I applaud Anet for bringing SAB back again!), I don’t want to deal with the hassle that 1 life adds to the event.
Continue coins are all well and good, but the overall effect just seems to be trying to annoying players into purchasing coins from the gem store. Which lends itself to the feeling that Anet is using this event as a cash grab.
I’m sure the official reason given is solving a legitimate problem in their eyes. But as for me, I’m just gonna go ahead and skip the event entirely. Not worth the trouble or the money to stock up on continue coins.

Why did you remove the bubble baubles from the end chest and replace them with the coins instead, then? I think people would rather have the five coins then just one, or the bauble instead of a coin.
Skipping this patch completely, ascended was always rushed and poorly implemented, have no interest in ascended weapons when legendary weapons are already in the game and SAB is just a money grab by the 1 life crap and gem store continuation coin…

You’re supposed to buy the Infinite Continue Coin.
They reduced the number of lives you get for free, they added much more instant-deaths, they reduced the number of baubles you can get by far.
Once you buy the coin, lives become more trivial than they have always been and you can save your baubles for something other than extra lives.
Just buy the Infinite Coin if you enjoy the content and don’t recommend the game to anyone that has a marginal interest.

Why in gods name would you buy this coin and encourage further slimy p2w crap like this in further releases? If this goes over and a lot of people buy it you will see p2w garbage like this in EVERY update thereafter.

I agree that it’s pretty obvious that some smart money-guy had the great idea to reduce overall enjoyment of the content by reducing rewards.
