Lots of complaints that GW2 lacks difficult content, sure.

No one means that the fun, gimmicky Living Story updates should be super difficult. SAB was fun because it was nostalgic and well-designed, but relatively easy. It made you feel like you were awesome at platforming. It convinced the player that they were smart, and creative.

I think SAB developers misunderstood what made it so popular the first time.

People are asking for difficult Guild Wars 2 content. Content in the base game where we use our weapons, and skills, and armor, and stats to kill enemies (preferably in instances so we can’t just Zerg it). That’s because at this point, most of us are pretty good at Guild Wars 2. Less so at platforming, it seems.

Everyone was happy with Super Adventure Box’s difficulty. That’s part of why it was so popular.

If I’m going to be doing something grueling, I want a dragon breathing down my neck, not a cute little pixely spider.

Honest mistake from the Dev’s part, and one that can hopefully be fixed pretty easily and going forward. I’m sure this difficulty appeals to some people, and I love that Tribulation mode gives them the option.

Based on how awesome Josh is being on this forum, I feel bad offering something that borders on criticism. But I don’t really think this is a criticism of the content he and the SAB team have designed— it is great for what it is. I’m just trying to explain why the Guild Wars 2 community might be confusingly whiny about the difficulty.

It’s not a real throwback to 8 bit games if it isn’t hard.

That was my understanding of it. If it only looks like a duck, but doesn’t quack or walk like a duck, it isn’t a duck.

You’re absolutely right.

What I’m saying is that Guild Wars 2 players enjoyed something that made them FEEL like they were playing a throwback to 8 bit games. Most of them don’t actually want to work at it.

Nobody asked for it? Here we go. Another person suffering the delusion that what ever his opinion is, somehow so is everyone elses. I LOVE the hard mode. I was ecstatic when they announced it. I guess that makes me the 0%, since I do not exist apparently.

Today I learned, regular mode SAB is hard.

From,

I agree with this.

I understand Josh’s vision for Tribulation Mode, but that doesn’t stop me from wishing he’d used that as the real throwback mode and kept regular SAB more low key fun.

Tribulation Mode is exactly what people demanded.

Normal Mode should not have nearly as many show-stopping areas as it does.

I don’t understand why so many people are confusing requests to tone down NORMAL mode with Tribulation Mode.

TM is what was demanded and it’s no where near what genuine 8-bit games were like, it’s based off modern fan-made torture platformers like Kaizo Mario. It’s not a “throwback” but rather a re-imagining with a heavy dose of trolling sadism.

I’m not getting why people aren’t understanding no one wants TM toned down, it’s Normal Mode that’s broken.

Agreeing with OP. People want the nomral mode to be fun and bring back old memories. Really, who remembers “oyeah, THAT level where I spent my entire day to make that jump !” from his old games and is actually happy to have done that ? Not a lot of people I guess. Tribulation should be here for that, and although I don’t agree with how try and die it is, it still should be hard enough for the masochist part of the playerbase, but normal mode doesn’t have to be part of it.

Dear Santa,
For christmas I’d like to get a crossbow for my characters.

People are asking for difficult Guild Wars 2 content. You know, like the game where we use our weapons, and skills, and armor, and stats to kill enemies. Preferably in instances areas so we can’t just Zerg it.

Why weave in a very unrelated topic like instanced vs zerg into this? Just say you want more content for the “main” game and not the sideline stuff. What shape that main content takes is utterly irrelevant to this topic. I was with you here until you made me disagree with your preference for instanced content.

Am I the only one who found world 1 in normal mode… hard enough?

It sounds wrong now that I can speedrun through it with my eyes closed, but getting all achievements (collecting all baubles… glitch jumps… corner jump around root… moto’s breath… e_e) took me some sweet time.

Everybody is now talking about how much of a breeze world 1 was, how lighthearted and low-key and what not, an example for “too easy” – I didn’t feel that way at the time at all!

… maybe I’m the only one.

April’s SAB was level 1. Practically the tutorial world. Of course games start off easy and get harder. Do infantile mode if it’s too difficult. It shows you where to go and steers you away from traps. If anything else, play through infantile mode first as a guide, then attempt normal mode.
