Whip useless...
While a good idea, it probably won’t happen.
Whip has significant range advantage over the melee weapons, it provides an ammoless method of getting across the turtles/crocs early in 2-1. It also allows you to stunlock bears.
Yeah. The whip is pretty much useless. It’s not really used for puzzles, and trying to stun enemies with it is pretty ineffective due to short range and short duration. Slingshot/Bombs are much more useful since they actually kill things.
I think if they made the range a bit longer, and made the animation quicker, the whip would be a bit more useful.
I still use the whip for hitting crocodiles, stun-locking bears and ninjas, and for grabbing baubles that are out of reach (especially in TM, where I prefer not to walk to the baubles).
I just wish it was easier to hit with the thing, and that it had a better reach.

I agree with this. I rarely use the whip for fighting or to grab bubbles.
If the whip was a alternative to the sword. With a better animation like the nightmare court whip. I might use it more often.
Bears – Whip, hit, hit, whip, hit hit… you take no damage
Polar bears – whip/hit or just circle strafe but sometimes ice makes that difficult or you don’t want to move a lot.
Bananas – whip, hit, hit, hit and you win
white assassins – whip, hit, hit
Does not work so well on hillbillies and red assassins though since they evade and move a lot.
You can also use the whip on the Storm Wizard, after deflecting one of his attacks. Just stun him with the whip, and get some extra hits in.
The whip also interrupts some of the moves that the Yeti boss does. And there are some cages that can be broken from a distance with the whip, while being on a safe spot from the lasers of the boss. The whip is also excellent for stunning monkeys. But again, I must point out that it misses easily.

Early in 2-1, all I used was the stick and then slingshot in the pre-patch piranha bend turtles. You don’t need the whip now period, in the April version of 2-1, we had I recall the whip being necessary for some crocs, but that is no longer the case whatsoever.
The hitboxes on the crocodiles are gigantic (about 3x the size of the crocodile, according to Josh I believe).
Yes, the whip has the ability to stun a few mobs, but it is slow to use (and hard to hit fast moving targets with as a consequence), easier just to slingshot or bomb from range.
Stunlocking imo, is borderline useless, maybe it is more useful now when it is actually worthwhile to kill the enemies since they drop more than one bauble at times, most of the time I just run past them though.. if they are not in the way of solving a puzzle.

I find the whip incredibly useful. My boyfriend and I have started working as a team now for some encounters (one whips, the other hits). And those pesky enemies fall without ever getting a hit on either of us.

From what we can see here (SAB upgrades) https://d1ej19d7kwigfi.cloudfront.net/uploads/forum_attachment/file/4005/sab_upgrades.jpg
It seems that whip will receive upgrades (probably the eagle thing as second, have no idea what it could be, and then the star rod as final upgrade to attack from distance (since the 2 others are stick’s upgrades).
Dunno if it would be worth it given we’ll have a boomerang though.

^^ this.
Whip is incredibly useful, if used strategically. Of course spamming slingshot works for a lot of things, if you don’t mind wasting all the baubles. But Whip is nearly as invaluable to me as the stick. I use it more than slingshot or bombs.
No it isn’t required for any puzzle yet, but neither is the slingshot, moto’s breath or the shovel.
You don’t have to use it, but just because you opt not to doesn’t mean it’s useless. I’ve only ever died from using moto’s breath if you want to talk about useless.
Lol, me and my friend use the whip all the time.. just learn to use it..
Whip spam for the raft ride in 2-1 makes me happy I bought it.
peasants had no bread and who responded: “Let them eat brioche.”
I guess I have to admit, it does have a few uses… so it is only almost useless or under used.
I guess my point is that whip is one of the first upgrades you are offered.. and the way it is used for so little doesn’t really benefit in making it clear that upgrades are important. When your first upgrade is so situational and not clearly absolutely needed anywhere. This, is when we get to a situation where people get annoyed that candle and torch are required to progress when they have the impression that upgrades are just fluff.
The whip is incredibly useful in combat. It’s also required to grab some of the baubles like the one in the toad/dart room on 2-2 that you can only get with the whip.
Bears – Whip, hit, hit, whip, hit hit… you take no damage
Actually, only the ring on the outside of the bear’s firebomb damages you.
As long as you don’t move, it can’t hurt you. Simply walk up and start hitting.
No need for whip here.

I stand corrected then, never was a fan of those get all baubles in single run achievements…. definitely not doing it on world 2 zones.
However, I still feel like it was originally supposed to be more useful than it is now.

Or you could just both attack the mobs and they die faster than they can attack?
Get hit by the storm wizard once he’s at 50% or just tired of him chasing you around? Use the whip.
Stand within melee range, predict and reflect his attack using the glove like normal and immediately follow up with the whip. Do a single attack, whip him again and repeat. The entire chasing phase is now nullified and you can kill him that much faster.

Polar Bears are easy enough to dodge around while killing them. I kinda agree with the OP, once you have your weapon upgraded, the whip is mostly useless.
Two things that make whip useful, IMO:
it collects baubles at range
if it’s still possible, stun-locking when you’re in a group totally trivializes most fights
Wait for World 3. There might be an upgrade to the whip.

There are a few places where you’re very close to more than one polar bear, and dodging around on the ice usually isn’t a good idea. Some polar bears you can take out from range or easily avoid their attacks, but others you do have to get close to them which is difficult without the whip IMO.
Also whip = easy raft achievement.

Raft is easy without the whip. Stay in the center and spam attacks.
Whip:
1. snatch hard to reach baubles
2. destroy nearby barrels in Tribulation Mode (or sling shot/bombs)
3. Trivialize ninja raft in W2-1 by stun locking the first ninja that spawns
4. Lock down foes for your teammates to finish of
5. Enables you to free yourself of certain glitched spots (like the gong-logs, dig for rabbits, then whip them)
6. Trivializes foes with wind-up abilities: Frogs, Bears, Bananas—alternate whip-smack
tl;dr the whip has many uses, but its primary function is snatching bauble just out of reach (happens all the time in tribulation mode)
