Let me just preface this by saying I really respect Josh and think he’s a smart, capable developer. I mean none of this personally against him.

In retrospect, I think the main reason I enjoyed SAB when it first came out was because the game lacked good content. But now ArenaNet has fleshed out and added content and is continuing to make additions and improvements. So while I was excited for World 2 at first, once it was added it sort of hit me that I’d rather play the real game.

Given that, I would prefer if the resources poured into SAB went into more living story instead. It’s a bit of a bummer that the month is essentially wasted, outside of a boss that pops every 2 hours, because the main focus was a mode that isn’t anything like Guild Wars 2.

Anyone else feel the same way?

I don’t feel the same way as you at all. I like that content outside of the “real” game is there for us in SAB. It allows us a break from The Living Story grind fest that its become. The backstory of Scarlett was essentially non-existent in game and only made sense when they released that web story, which I enjoyed, but should have really been in game.

In terms of why I want SAB to keep progressing is that it allows for a break of the typical let’s visit event, hit button 1 and a couple of skills, go to next champ/event chain and get reward. SAB provides a different set of challenge and sometimes mind numbing events that the main Living Story has at times. SAB is actually challenging content.

I also love SAB because it feels whimsical, nostalgic, and a great tribute to video games that came before Guild Wars 2. I am personally looking forward to the madness of World 3.

When the bugs got fixed (mainly tribulation mode world 2 zone 2 spike trap upon death check point and clouds working), I am now revisiting tribulation mode world 2 with more gusto.

Thanks Josh and team for your hard work. Now that the major bugs of SAB are mostly fixed, the content is much more enjoyable.

No way, I’m dead set on getting Lord Vanquish’s head (and flaming weapon) and my hunger for 8-bit blood won’t be sated ’till I beat him.

That being said, I have been playing less SAB 2 then I did with SAB 1, but mostly because my gaming time is of a finite nature and I want to kill Tequila and have to farm to get stupid ascended weapons

“We have no first-person view because stupid people would lock into it”
“You can’t have more than 10 HS decks because that would confuse people”
“30 fps is more cinematic”

I love the SAB. The only issue I have with it is that its content overlaps with the Tequila update, which is strenuous on people with less time. Luckily I have plenty of time to play so I’ll get it all, but for people with less gaming hours available to them it would feel more like work rather than a hobby if you’re a completionist like I am.

I still think Scarlet is gonna want SAB. Just sayin’.

And with Tequatl being as insanely difficult and ridiculous as it is, I’m glad SAB is there so I can do something else.

Nope. SAB is awesome. And to me personally, more fun than dailies + boss fights.

It’s content I like, so I’m fine with it being here. This reminds me of another post I saw. I can’t remember if it was with this second release or first, but someone said SAB is out of place in GW2. Its about as out of place here as an actual video game is out of place in the real world.

Of course there are people who don’t like/care for it, and there’s nothing wrong with that.

I don’t think you will get much support in this thread. This sub-forum is mostly only browsed by people who like SAB. People who don’t like it and would would rather something else are playing that content and reading the forums relevant to it.

Personally I’d rather more content in line with the core GW2 experience, but looking at Josh’s past work, he seems to mostly work on Jumping Puzzles (that I know of) which I don’t care for much. Having said that, if the resources put into SAB could be put into making more open world mini dungeons, I’d far rather that than more SAB. I suspect they will play out SAB until the end (rescue the princess) and as long as the core people behind it (Josh is the only one I know by name but there are probably more) I suspect their desire to create this content will keep it coming out.

As far as SAB providing a break from repetitive Living World content, the Living World content has been in need of some innovative design. It’s not crazy to think if they didn’t have devs working on SAB, they might be able to figure out some really cool way to innovate the Open World content so that it’s more than just a champion train or press “f” to carve a pumpkin.

The only problem with SAB is that it is now completely isolated. You cannot make progress on things like ascended gear, legendary weapons, or anything from within SAB. The problem is that if you play the REST of the game, then SAB is a waste of your time.

You could make SAB amazingly relevant again by changing a few things:

  • Bring back Obsidian Shards / Philosopher’s Stones / Crystals for Bubbles
  • Add a decent number of Empyreal Fragments to the end chests in SAB scaled based on difficulty (0 in Infantile Mode, more in TM) and world
  • Bring back fun rewards like the super adventure fun box for bubbles
  • Make rewards repeatable again and no longer daily gated; this change they made for this release was one of the worst they could’ve done

If people could make progress like that in SAB, Rata Sum and the SAB hub wouldn’t be desolate wastelands right now.

I hate that people always seem to think we need to be able to farm something like a Korean MMO player for the content to be worth our time. All we are doing is training the devs to think the carrot is the most important part of the MMO and that’s why we get ascended items with time gates and more crazy grinds. Rewards and content go hand in hand, but with the Gauntlet, Pavillion and champion grinds of last month, it’s clear the balance has dramatically shifted in favour of monotonous, repetitive grind for wealth. I hope the game stays away from that kind of thing in the future and sticks to systems like dungeon tokens for rewards.

One of the problems with adding these kinds of carrots to SAB is that players will play SAB not because they enjoy SAB, they do it because they want the carrot and it’s more efficient to grind SAB than it is to get obby shards from karma.

I’m glad the Fun Box isn’t buyable with bubbles, it’s monetization that doesn’t matter to me. I’d rather buy the weapon skins via in-game methods and use gems for the Box of Fun.

They have three or four separate teams working on different Living World content. They don’t need Josh’s team doing it too. Let him work on SAB and leave him alone.

It is fun to play SAB, but the thing that keeps people coming back to content after the novelty has worn off is an effective rewards scheme. SAB sorely lacks that right now, and that is a major contributor to its current predicament.

I love the SAB. It’s the most fun I’ve had in Guild Wars 2. I am a retro junkie though, growing up with the Atari, Commodore 64, ColecoVision, NES and so on. Blowing away hours in the SAB is pretty much what I did with all those old games. Turn off the machine and your achievements are gone in many games, besides self-satisfaction. Nowadays I try to top my time in Tribulation mode.

I don’t have any legendary/ascended gear besides some trinkets..I’ve never been a real gear-grinder type for MMOs, so that aspect doesn’t appeal to me. GW2 is an awesome game, which I enjoy, but I dunno…I think I’ll be playing a lot less of GW2 after the SAB is gone.

While I generally agree with this sentiment, I do think it would be a good idea to bring back Obsidian/Crystals etc. as rewards one could purchase with Bubbles. While I like the SAB weapon skins, they don’t suit any of my character aesthetics, so I now have 65 Bubbles sitting in my bank that I can’t spend. (Don’t collect minis either.)

I spend more of my time in the super adventure box than any other part of the game. I’ve basically gotten all the skins I want, and all the achievements, at this point I’m playing for the pure fun of the game. Tribulation mode has become fun in and of itself for me. While I’d welcome more practical rewards so I could spend my baubles and make progress I can take back to the rest of the game it’s far from necessary. Yeah, it would draw other people back in but I’ve gotta wonder if they’d just be grinding or actually enjoying it.

I think SAB should be permenant actually. But I hate LS, since it removes content which makes no sense in the grand scheme of things.
