I thought the idea was cute at first, but then I started seeing 8 bit mini pets and back packs and fireworks, etc. While I tried the SAB, and thought it was boring and just not fun, that’s one thing. But now, all this has crept into the pristine, high res world of Guild Wars. The weapon skins have high res animations and detail, but all the other stuff is, imo, ugly, blocky, and low res. This ruins the immersion of the game, and clashed greatly with the rest of the art and detail of GW2.
The other thing that I find sad about this is that there is a huge amount of content in SAB. That seems like it required a great amount of work. While they did put forth a great effort to fix culling and introduced more rewards for badges of honor, things I really do appreciate the time and effort to get done, there are still a number of things that can be fixed with the existing game. These range from big things like skill lag to small things, like fixing mesmer speed buff so it stacks with other speed buffs, or being able to kick party members who log out or leave WvW.
I do appreciate and commend Anet for consistently introducing new content to keep the game fresh. I just disagree with the type of content with SAB and wish they’d focus a bit more on the bugs and little annoyances that seem like it might be easy to fix that have existed since launch.

The team that made SAB is completely seperate from the team who would be fixing bugs and doing balance, so that point is irrelevent. There are different groups of people working on balance / bugs, new content, ect. So the effect SAB has on “bugs and annoyances” is nill to none. The SAB team is also quite small (8 core people and help from a handful of others on the side) so its not like they’re even devoting all of their “new content” resources to SAB either.

As for the 8-bit visuals “corrupting” the world… for the minipets I don’t see the problem. Mini pets are already silly as it is. How does it make sense to have mini Rytlock’s and Logan’s running around? The SAB minipets in particular are supposed to be holograms, hence the blue glow (the weapons are supposed to be as well, read the description of the weapons in-game) so they actually make more sense than some of the others.

I can kind of see your point as far as the “SAB Box of Fun” assets, but… meh. You’ll hardly see them constantly, especially once SAB is shut off. You can always think of them as oddly-designed party effects, rather than actual 8-bit things.

I have refrained from saying what my view is on SAB, as a lot of people enjoy it…so fair enough its only a April thing no problem really…

However, I lived through the 80’s, 90’s which were when platform games were at there peak, a lot of increasingly better more awesome ones were released then…

If you took SAB back in time to the late 80’s and released it as a game in its own right what would it score/review be like?

Probably 6-7 out of 10, medicore to average…

You can get a free emulator and play completely free platform games from that time and there are loads that are far, far better…

I’m indifferent. I have the backpack on my little Asura Engi & it looks legit. On a Norn or a Charr maybe it’d look chinsy. I dunno. I haven’t had the emersion broken from seeing the items out & about. I just view them as Asura hologram pets. It’s actually more plausible than a tiny Priest of Balthazar following you.

The weapons do look good. They’re on the same order as the Asura racials or Priory weapons.

When SAB first launched I spent a lot of time running it for BBs so I could get the fun skins. I’d run it like 5-7 times a day. The novelty quickly wore off.

Now I run it about 1-2x every day or two that I play. Just enough so that I can buy another skin before the end of the month and so that I have some saved for next time (pistols!?).

I understand that there are different teams for everything. 8 core people and a handfull of others on the side seems like a lot to me compared to the people I’ve heard are in charge of other things. And, duh, the SAB people are not going to be in charge of bug fixes or game improvement. But it is more a reflection on management as far as where they want to put their human resources to work.

While I can understand the “Hate” for the weapon skins, the following I say about this.

A: Sab doesn’t have much affection on the World of Tyria.

B: When Sab was created it was a side project for 3 people and later on 2 people added to help with programing.

C: Was never considered to be a main project and will always be a side project.

D: “Flame and Frost” is now coming to a close and new unrevealed project will be in the works after April 30th, give or take a couple of hot fixes.

E: “Flame and Frost” will have new weapon skins to offer, very soon, so the 8-bit will be old news.

F: An update in Sab will likely be around very late in July.

G: Only has 4 worlds with no hint of a prequel or sequel in future content.

H: The weapon skins are a “Fad” for now, and will most likely be a thing of a past, as newer and cooler looking skins both weapons and armor, that is not SAB, will be given to the public.

I: Why so serious about a reference to another company, particular a single person?

I love the SAB so, so much myself, but I do have mixed feelings about the 8-bit content in PvE-land. I agree that it is anti-immersive, albeit not any more so than some of the other equally tacky content that has always been around. I have come to accept this as a part of guild wars 2. /shrug

If it is any consolation to you: it is a fashion right now, and the effect will wear off, and (most) people will replace the 8-bit gear with whatever the next hip thing is.

That being said: no, this does not make me hate the SAB one bit for I am having too much fun and it is awesome.

While I have no issue with the SAB, I would be lying if I didnt say I would rather the resources and time go into other things (specifically game fixes). Even if it isnt much, Id still rather it go into making the core game more strong. Then again, it seems many are enamoured with the SAB, and I think making so many happy with their game is a good thing in many ways. So, I am a little torn on it (at least without hard numbers to show the true success of the SAB).

I think the weapon skins are nice looking, the backpacks look fine on an asura (the ones I have seen). The pets I dont give much notice to, so cant particularly comment.

The SAB itself, I found to be pretty boring. If nothing else, it reminded me why I am playing Guild Wars 2 and not spending my gaming time on an emulator. So, there is something to be said for that. Conversely, it destroyed my pristine rose-tinted glasses I was using to look at some of the old classics I used to play, lol.

I do appreciate and commend Anet for consistently introducing new content to keep the game fresh. I just disagree with the type of content with SAB and wish they’d focus a bit more on the bugs and little annoyances that seem like it might be easy to fix that have existed since launch.

No one is going to agree 100% with the content any company makes. I understand there are plenty of people who find nothing entertaining about SAB. That’s perfectly fine. We are a tiny team, and there are many other, much larger teams focused on bugs and more traditional content. One of the truly amazing things about ArenaNet, and the reason I’ve been working here almost a decade, is that they actually let the content creators follow their passions and make stuff that we’re exited about. It’s one of the reasons GW2 is as good as it is. (Not perfect of course.) SAB is a dream gig for our little team, and most companies would say no to such an off-the-wall idea. The fact that we put it out there is testament to Anet’s desire to innovate and try new things rather than resting on our laurels and regurgitating the same thing over and over. So even if you don’t like this particular experiment, I hope that you can appreciate the impulse that made it possible; and I’m sure one of the many other teams we’ve got cooking up new and better stuff will make something that really appeals to you.

If you took SAB back in time to the late 80’s and released it as a game in its own right what would it score/review be like?

Well, minus the whole 3-D aspect of it, yeah, you’re probably right. Of course judging any classic platform or adventure game by it’s first 1/4 would get it lower scores. There are definitely problems in translating the tight, instant control of those old games into a 3 dimensional MMO engine with established mechanics. Despite that, I think by the time we are done we would get a review like this in Game Pro magazine in 1991: Graphics: 4 Sound: 5 Control: 3 Fun Factor:5. We’ll see.

Even if it isnt much, Id still rather it go into making the core game more strong. Then again, it seems many are enamoured with the SAB, and I think making so many happy with their game is a good thing in many ways.

I think this is a very mature statement. Of course no single piece of content is going to appeal to the entire player base. But as far as bang for your development buck, SAB has done very well for GW2 proper, bringing back a lot of players who faded out, and converting a lot of WoW players. SAB will come and go, but a lot of those people will stay in Tyria who wouldn’t otherwise be there.

And you would still miss the point: SAB isn’t a game in its own right, and it wasn’t released in the 80s. It’s an elaborate tribute, an incredible homage, to those games and it manages to do this as a sideshow inside of another game. I agree — at least the SAB pets make sense in the context of the world(ie: Asura hologram pets). Many of the minis make no sense at all — what exactly is my mini Rytlock?

I also like the weapons, though I wish the physical parts(the non-glowy blue bits) looked either more hologram-y, or more physical/real. Right now, they just seem… off to me.

Absolutely! It did not have a strong replay value for myself but I had a lot of fun experiencing it in the first place and I laughed and had a big smile on my face. So thanks to the team in general – keep enjoying what you are doing and keep true to your vision of things. I might not always agree but on the other hand I never wrote authors I liked letters on how this or that paragraph in their book was mediocre etc.

I have mixed feelings about SAB. On one hand I can appreciate a lot of people enjoyed it and found it to be very fun, on the other I bought GW2 because it was an MMO. Because it had an engaging combat system, because MMOs can tell stories and have interesting lore, because I liked taking down big bosses with other people.

There are a lot of things I want from an MMO and a tribute to a different genre game is nowhere on my list. Personally if I wanted to play a game like SAB I would go back and play one of the platformers I missed during the nes/snes/64 eras. Or I would replay one of the classics. It doesn’t take away from what SAB is, but I don’t understand when people get giddy about spending an afternoon in SAB when there are better (whole) games out there they could be playing.

Then I think about all the problems or lack of content that GW2 has in certain areas and consider the time and resources that would have gone into SAB and I wonder if the game could be incrementally better in another area which is more central to what an MMO is and why people play this MMO. Maybe they could have added minor jumping elements to dungeon paths (as an optional alternative route). Maybe they could have used the art assets and resources to create unique back slot item skins to add to the existing dungeons. Maybe they could have created a whole new dungeon. I suspect SAB was easier to put together because of how basic the graphics are so the same team may not have gone as far or created as much content if they went with something that fit better into the world, but they could have done something cool for the rest of the wall.

Ultimately they created SAB. It’s a substantial update and some people had a lot of fun. I honestly suspect this had a significant novelty/nostalgia component to it but it was a cool addition. I’ve personally played through it and had some fun (more than the first two parts of Flame and Frost which are traditional content, then again there was a lot more substance to SAB). It’s hard to separate how popular this content is compared to how valuable the rewards are. Had there been no skins or titles offered, how long do you think before people burnt out on the idea and ignored it?

At the end of the day GW2 is an MMO and while ArenaNet is trying to innovate and break conventions, abandoning the core of what you are (which is what SAB does by design – it’s not trying to be an MMO) is something that is best kept to a minimum. I don’t think SAB crosses the line and it was always intended there would be mini games like SAB and Keg Brawl (I think there was also supposed to be a shooting game in Divinity’s Reach). Distractions from the daily grind to break up the experience can be very effective. I think SAB did that well for a few people. Ironically, the rewards system doesn’t follow the same innovative ideology that sprung the content. Limited time rewards, 50 bauble grinds, rare drops from repetition of the chest, all old school MMO psychology right there. The most powerful force in an MMO tends to be the item rewards and ArenaNet are playing it very safe with that one.

I quite like SAB for what it is. I had my fun with it but haven’t run it since it’s opening days and won’t likely be back until the next parts get added. I don’t, however, really like seeing it out in the rest of the game world. The thing about that, though, is that I’m already seeing very few people actually using the weapon skins, minis, etc. It’s basically what I predicted would happen in that once the rewards in particular are no longer the new hotness, we’ll see them much less.

Haters gonna hate, no but seriously no content appeals to everybody. I for one dislike PvP. I can tolerate WvW but all of the sPvP content, including the games like costume brawl, the norn game and the snowball fights I can’t stand. I find them to be garbage and am annoyed that my inability to play them will forever lock me out of many acheivement points.

At the same time I certainly don’t begrudge ANet making them, and continuing to make new ones because I know for a fact that very many people enjoy them, and even enjoy only them.

I love SAB. I’ve had my fill of it and haven’t played in a while, though I may start making runs again trying to get more skins on the chance that once they’re done they’ll be gone forever, but I do still like it and look forward to the next installments.

As someone who has played mmo games for 10+ years, I feel that adventure box is the turning point for GW2. I personally feel it’s the thing that sets it different from any other game. GW2 has a lot of great mechanics, good animation, storylines, it’s comfortable to play etc… but one thing it lacks is being unique. Being named as the sequel of another game doesn’t really help. My current view of GW2’s most prominent feature is that it’s comfortable and fun to play. I’m looking forward to new events – although even if they stay the same, I’d still be content with them (I loved the snowfight pvp on christmas – and I usually hate pvp).

The SAB, however, has been the one thing I’ve linked screenshots to my friends that don’t play mmo/hasn’t tried GW2, because it’s unique, it’s funny, it’s something that other games will not have. WoW sometimes has had similar things, like the flowers & zombies thing, but even then they’re very small and not very well done. The SAB instead shows a real effort and you can see the team really wanted to make this thing alive.

As dungeon it’s somewhat lacking in content – probably because the team size is so small. The farming requirement for account bound items is also incredibly tedious… and there’s the problem of graphics clashing, but I think they managed to make it enough much look like crazy asuran techonology thing to get away with it. However, I do agree that if in future we get lots of clashing graphics mishmashing, it could make GW2 look like Perfect World, which is… not a good thing.

It’s very nostalgic so that’s why I liked it. It might be more enjoyed by people who gamed and grew up in the 80’s, or people who like vintage games. I also think it’s very unique and creative.

I don’t think it clashes with the art in the game, but I do understand what you mean and your point of view.
