Definitely bugged since I’m 100% sure I avoided all his aoe’s my last run, I did get hit by the cannons though.

same for me, i didnt get damaged from him once in the whole fight, i didnt even get hit from one of the little circles when they both get up and shoot their cannons.. and still did not get it…

just change it to the way it should be…. only the fight against him after Mei died… even if he gains his FULL hp back..

On reddit they write that you can finish this achievement only in first try because the counter is bugged and it doesnt reset. IDK if its true or not. I asked a few people who have the personal achievement and they finished it on their first try.. anyone with personal achi here?

Ah I forgot to include that it was the first attempt and I was only downed once by her teleport shot but was not hit by any aoe while being revived.

Of course, I think I deserved it, because I single-handedly ressed 2 players (alternated to avoid damage) while 4 people were DEAD (not down).

I tanked Mia and Horrik as my necro with my guardian friend ressing 3 dead party memebers who touched both mortars and aoes. One of the dead got the achievement, me and the guardian? Hell no. Thank you, ArenaNet. I’m happy I get rewarded for the skillful gameplay.

Blah, dev’s please take a look at this and provide some clarification. Feel like I’m wasting a LOT of my time on a bugged out achievement.

Guys, I had a thought. I got this after my first go and I can CONFIRM I got hit by cannons during the cannon phase, And I’m also FAIRLY certqain I got hit by the blue stuff as I was kiting mai into it… But I DID manage to dodge every single one of horrics PYSICAL attacks with the cannon. You know the one? Where he physically hits you with the cannon. MAYBE that is what you need to avoid for the achivement. It would make sense wouldn’t it? PERSONAL SPACE? Makes sesne to me, are the people who are claiming they dodge all his cannon attacks sure they never got hit by that?

Good theory, Kaaboose, but in my last run, as a Mesmer I basically stayed well away from Horrik the entire time. Got hit by plenty of AoE’s and during the barrages, but if your theory was correct, I should have still got the achievement at the end. That didn’t happen, so I think we can rule that out.

My experience is that I have run this dungeon more than 10 times and still haven’t got the achievement while I was able to dodge every attack from Horrik when he was alone in the end (and almost every time). I haven’t managed to evade all his attacks from the start to the end of the fight (including canons) so that might be it (though it’s kind of a crazy achievement for temporary content, seriously).

At least, that’s what I was inclined to think until one of my friends got the achievement. He’s been hit by AOEs all along and even died completely. Still he got the achievement. Ok, what the heck? I’m glad for him but clearly there’s something wrong with this achievement.

I’m okay with bugs once in a while, it happens. But don’t keep us in the dark please ANet. I love this dungeon, it’s really cool and I think it’s the best dungeon there is in the game at this time. But unfortunately, it’s getting on my nerves because of this bugged achievement and that’s a shame.

Please ArenaNet, give us an official statement on this thread so we can better understand what’s going on. Remember, it’s temporary content and many of us don’t want to miss out. Thank you.

The achievement Personal Space unlocks if you avoid Horrik’s area attack while fighting him. This means that during your fight with Horrik and Mai Trin, you need to avoid all the area attacks that Horrick does. You can be hit with the direct attacks, as this doesn’t count, and you can be hit by them without losing the achievement. We understand that the current description of the Personal Space achievement is creating confusion and we thank you for letting us know. That answer is even more confusing than the achievement itself. All of Horrik attacks are aoe. I don’t remember seeing him doing anything but shooting cannonballs and smashing his cannon on the ground occasionally when players try to melee him. And that cannon smash is obviously an aoe. So by direct attacks I believe he meant Mai Trin which is absolutely irrelevant. That answer doesn’t help at all.

Now, from trying an entire evening with a party of guildies here’s the feedback from different tactics we used.

1st tactic.
Normal try. Ignored the aoe till Mai Trin was defeated and concentrated on avoiding it only when we fought Horrik alone. Didn’t work.

2nd tactic.
Tried to avoid all of his cannon attacks and cannon smash for the entire fight. Fight
went for almost 40 min since we had a hard time trying to get Mai Trin into the electric fields. Some of us succeeded to avoid the aoe till the end but they didn’t get the achievement.They did get hit by some during the cannon barrage phase tho.

3rd tactic.
We fight it the normal way, not being concerned about avoiding aoe. After the last cannon barrage phase just before the end of the fight one of us switched to another character, went inside and started running to the boss. He did get the achivement .

That’s what we tried so far. None of us managed to dodge every aoe bit for the entire fight, we will try again this evening. So my conclusion is you have to avoid his 2 types of cannonballs, the fire and the electric one, his cannon smash AND everything during cannon barrage phases. Not to mention for some attacks you gotta be aware not only about the aoe circle but also the projectile trajectory. Yes, you can get hit even if you’re outside the circles.

It’s a rather challenging achievement, a nice change from the click F key hundreds of times, kill x mobs or escort thousands of dolyaks. Still, some people may find it a bit overtuned, not to mention very buggy and easily exploitable with the character swap.

Now the laser one on the first boss. Very nice and doable while posing a bit of challenge. More achievements like that please.

Three times avoided everything (thieves ;p ) and no achievement for anyone. Waiting for fix.

I want to thank you very much sir. My team and I switched toons at the end of the dungeon, when only Horrik was left, and we all got the achievement (except the one who launched the dungeon of course).

If you want to get it, that’s the way to go.

Which cannons are Horrik’s and which are “others?” The fire/electrical ones he usually fires?

Id like to thank dev for clarifying this once and forever. I have this achievement done and I hope that this will help others to finish it too.

Actually, they are both correct. Horrik has a melee attack that he occasionally uses. This attack does not count against the achievement.

How exactly did you do that? I tried it one hour ago, but didn’t get my achievement. We got to 25% and after the barrage phase I switched the char. But I couldn’t get to the fight in time (also the doors were closed), because we also done the 15min thing (yes, worked easily). Maybe I have to do some damage after switching? But the doors are closed?! Or do I have to completely logout and login (or close whole GW2)?

Anyway, I will first try the official tactic. Thank god there are so many teams, that need someone on the last boss. ;-)

If you look up at the cannons, you can see who is firing in what direction. You can also base the circles spread (always gets shot in 5s) based on the position of who’s shooting.

However, the easiest method is to just avoid all cannon fire.

Right, keep an eye on Horrik then. This makes it difficult, but not impossible. I think I’ll be trying for this achievement again on my Sword/Shield warrior. Block + Leap and 2 dodges plus plenty of regen should be enough to keep me alive and away from Horrik’s attacks during the barrage phases.

Thankyou very much for the reply this clear’s things up greatly. it also appears tht everyone was wrong about how it is done. Well time to take the gloves off and roll the sleeves up cuz its kitten kicken time. Insidentaly A-net great dungeon, love how challenging it is. I remember the adrenaline rush when me and my guildies finally managed to kill mai and horick and with just 10 secs left on the clock blasted down that airship in cinematic glory. (i pushed the button XD)

I did it as a guardian today. Just like the admin said and it worked from the first go. I did get hit by fire though by horric, but i evaded the initial blast. Added picture (no pic no proof)

It’s definitely not just the barrage phase. A thief (had the achievement already) and I stealthed through each barrage phase without getting hit once, and I didn’t get the achievement.

I just got the achievement. I can confirm that logging out to another character after the third barrage phase is down then running back and killing Mai and the Horrik will grant you the achievement. For those of you who can’t get back, you have to talk to Inspector Kiel to port back into the room.

Why should this achievement exist? It makes the fight less enjoyable by telling players how they should play.

Would be really help full if Anet could at least tell us what the hell we’re supposed to do instead of people who screw it up getting by some bug because the story they’re saying right now is confirmed multiple times to be incorrect.

terrible idea for an achievement. considering you want to avoid the barrage aoe’s because they do a nifty amount of damage on the off chance you do get hit, unless your somehow watching horrik as you run around to avoid his specifically.. seems too difficult to get legit unless you are perfect with your avoidance/dodge. in other words average players need not apply.

I’ve got my achievement yesterday evening. I was the one who “tanked” Mai (or rather attempted to keep Mai in the blue circle), thus enjoying the full AOE power of Horrick during that time (the ground combat phase).

During the cannon phases, we split the group as follows:
1 person north
1 person south
1 person east
1 person west
1 person center

This way, we just had to move left/right or forward/back and ocasionally dodge when too many circles. It was relaxing and easy. Note that one issue can appear – even if you do avoid all the circles, there is a chance that the projectile hits you before it hits the circle…so you need to either have an Asura (kinda little to get hit) or be careful to not stand in the path of the projectile (aka know where the projectiles come from).

We had a person take a hit mid-air and lost the achievement due to that.

As for the difficulty, it’s not too hard, just badly explained. Even average players can get it. And if it’s too hard to actually dodge and properly position, then sorry, but not all achievements have to be completed by every single being – that’s why they are achievements.

You have to keep in mind that:
a) circle is slightly bigger than it’s shown, so standing between 3 circles and hoping you wont get hit will most likely not work
b) getting hit by cannon ball also counts
c) counter doesnt seem to reset when resetting encounter
d) getting burned by walking/dodging inside already there aoe field also counts.

Got my achievement with guardian, also tanking mai inside fields… didnt even dodge fire fields when mai was active because I was just too lazy.
During barrage phase I always went to where horrik didnt point his cannon. That might work for all of you playing without vent/ts/skype/mumble or with people new to this dungeon/unable to read.

Lol was so happy it worked forgot to post. The above method works every time. What we did afterwards for other people is all 5 fought through to past the 3rd barrage. Then depending on how good your kiters are have 2-3 people log out and back in onto a new character. Kite the bosses until they make it back into the boss room to finish the fight. Not sure if it matters but the people who log in and out also did not get hit by any circles to finish the fight off.

Switching chars is how me and my guildies got the achivement.

Fight until after the 3rd barrage (you can get hit, and even die, doesnt matter). Then switch out to another char. Party will need to slow down dps (remove Mai’s stack and get Horrik’s health down a bit to make it faster later) and wait until you get back in. Then try not to get hit by red circles anymore. You will get it (confirmed multiple times)

I’m not 100% sure this achieve is working properly. With my guild we’ve done several runs in which 1 person runs around and the rest sit in aoe stealth during the cannon phase. It’s worked once, but we tried it again yesterday and none of the people got the achieve, even though they didn’t get hit by any aoe during the barrage.

How can we tell if they are his or not though?

Either way, I think I’m just gonna do it the other way they say is acceptable, get to the third barrage and then log out and back in, if the group doesn’t mind.

Why is it worth getting an achievement when you’re not actually achieving it? Isn’t it basically cheating? I’d love not to have that one bit in the Sky Pirates tab empty, but personally I’d rather not feel I cheated.

I’m the opposite. I want to do it normally (tried 3 times so far), and if I can just get it filled in, I’ll take that option, cause I don’t like empty lines in my LS achievement pages (this will be the first one, if I can’t get the those three). I’ll still need to somehow get faster than light and unfriendly skies.

I wrote to bug section. It seems that this achiev is bugged and time is running out.

There is an easy way to do it.
But I don’t know if it’s an exploit, so I won’t talk about it.

I did it that way, many people before me got it by this way. It was stated it is one way to do it by Anet dev on twitter. But i didn’t get the achiev when I tried.

I realized it doesn’t matter anyway, it’s just a game. It was supposed to be fun, not to get crazy every two weeks with new set of bugs. And now, when they introduced bi-weekly updates I won’t be able to keep up with the game anyway. I already spent 1000 hours in it, time to grow up.

Actually I’m close to this conclusion as well. It supposed to be fun, now it’s chore like thingy. Don’t get me wrong – it’s still nice to play and all. But it forces me to do what I don’t like (or at list – I do not fancy this on that particular moment) and on their terms. If achievements like “personal space” would be bind to permanent content – it would be ok. I will get this in my own pace, when mood hits me. But now? My inner completionist force me to get all that I can, and while bugs prevent me from getting what I deserve…
I allready gave up PvP (for same reason), WvW became dull as hell. Maybe it’s time to find different game. Something harder, less casual, with more freedom.

It seems like what Mark said isn’t true. Could you please for the love of god, shed light on this achievement, people have succeeded in avoiding all aoe during the barrage phase, and still no achievement, make it so its horriks attack after Mai’s dead, or remove it completely, it’s very ridiculous. People randomly getting it, eventhough they got hit by his cannons, it makes no sence. Do the devs even know what the critera for it are? Im seriously confused.. Shed some light on it asap. On top of that, it’s temporary content x.x the fun factor is completely destroyed

To make the whine more funny – I got it few hours ago. By dieing in phase 3 of cannonade… so yeah. So much for doing it right. But hey! I’m happy – same as it was with crab tossing! Got my achi by the bug, so I can sleep well, knowing that my inner completionist won’t judge me

If it helps: sometimes Horrik’s cannon will hit you even if you don’t stand in aoe, but just by being in font of him as he shoots.

It just makes me so sad/mad that this achievement and the lazer achievement can be obtained by lazy players who purposely die near the beginning and stay dead til the end…… ugh…. ppl who did all the work don’t get rewarded sometimes…

Ok a lot of people still seem to have trouble getting this achievement… so for your sakes I’ll try to give you all a super simple explanation of how to attain it

If you want to do it the normal way, its easiest as previously mentioned to split the group up into the 4 corners and 1 in center for the barrage phases. Decide whose going where before hand and you should be able to outrun/dodge all the cannon blasts.

If you get hit or want to do the character swap method, I suggest you stay until all the cannon barrages have completed and your group actually kills Mai, yes kills her! Then you can go as far as to lower Horrik’s HP to almost dead before you switch characters.

You will need to have a group understanding of what you are doing so they don’t kill him before you return, as in running all the way back into the boss fight. While you are running back, your group will only need to evade his little cannon blasts until you enter the arena again, and yes you do need to re-enter the boss fight for the achievement to register. (I’d suggest hitting him a few times just to be safe)

Either method should render your achievement as completed so go get em kiddies!
