This bothered me a lot about Canach’s dungeon, more so than anything else.

First, let me say the following: I think announcing a boss’s skills is a good thing.

It’s good for the game, good for communication, and helps a lot when particle effects and small bosses make it very difficult to actually know what he is doing. That said, I think this implementation is shoddy, and there need to be a lot of improvements for it to actually be meaningful and valuable.

  • It needs to be displayed as a screen message, not a chat message

You know the messages that display when you’ve been idle for a long time? They show at the top-middle of your screen. That’s where it needs to be located, not in the chat box.

  • Keeping it in the chat box is okay, but make sure the players can filter for it

You know how you filter for “Combat” and “Guild chat” and things? There should be a filter for “Skill Announcements” which allows players to see this if they want in a channel or hide it if they want. The user would always be able to see the announcement in the top-middle of your screen, because that’s an important part of the boss fight, but it shouldn’t forcibly clutter a chat box. It was nearly impossible to follow what some of my teammates were saying in the NULL boss fight (or heaven forbid guild chat, which is similarly colored) due to the bloat from the announcements.

  • No fluff in the announcement, just tell us what he’s doing

This really bothered me. Some of NULL’s announcements include things like “Get to safety!” or other such fluff. This doesn’t help the players, it just adds more text, and adds more clutter. Keep these messages terse and to the point so the player knows what is happening but doesn’t have to read 200 characters to do so. NULL’s messages should be “Subdirector NULL is exploding mines!” or “Subdirector NULL is rearming mines!” or “Subdirector NULL has spawned shocking charges!”. That kind of terseness is perfect for an announcement like this.

Thanks, and hopefully my feedback reaches the people who can make a difference.

It’s too bad none of the points I raised as actual feedback are touched in that thread, and too bad that that thread is more about complaining than providing actual feedback.

I think my thread provides plenty of feedback, it’s a little harsh but it’s not senseless complaining.

But yeah don’t know why that guy linked you to my thread. You are arguing for something different then I am.

But I do think these ideas are good if they insist on keeping the messages in. Personally I’d prefer they removed them and focused on more natural in game ways of telling the player what is happening.

I feel differently… I say get rid of all messages and just have visible, obvious animations for boss actions. Players should learn the animations and react when they see them — much more immersive and fun this way (imho).

I can’t agree with this more.
