Look at this thread:

And he wasn’t there in F&F.

Scott gave us an explanation for Canach’s new look. However, since no npc seems to notice that he is completely different, I’m starting to think that it was just an excuse and that they just changed his appearence without giving it much thought. I wonder if they thought that we wouldn’t notice. We are not five years old.

I thought the same. It’s such a pity that Kiel said nothing about his new appearance. I’m really sad about that. *cry*
Yeah his reasoning sounds pretty much like an excuse for having just changed the look because they wanted him to look evil.
Note how he said he regrets there isn’t more background information on the new look.. That sort of suggests to me the explanation was whipped up specifically to satisfy those who asked. Really sad. Evil should not be an appearance thing, it should be an attitude thing. If you can’t convey a characters emotions and motives through their speech, dialogue and actions without making them look like an archetype then rethink what you’re doing.
Historically, video game heroes tend to be more attractive while villains are less likely to be pretty. I’d like to see an attractive female antagonist who doesn’t have an icy personality or spider legs growing our of her torso.
Canach looks like anything but a villain to me at the moment, so I must say that their attempt to make him look scarier failed and only made me feel bad for him.
Also, he sounds so genuinely concerned and so willing to help the settlers that it is hard to think of him like a villain.
On an sorta unrelated note, looks like Kiel will end up looking like the hero of the settlers by blowing up the ship full of contracts (because she says she will need all the black powder she can get). Because, of course, someone like Canach couldn’t ever be allowed to be the hero… :T
