Q:
Is the creation of new characters for completing the Canach’s Lair dungeon story mode and obtaining the reward, considered an exploit?
Just a simple question that I would love to get answered, if possible by a developer.
Thank You!

A:
Now there ist the offical answer. It WAS an exploit.
Players were exploiting it by deleting and remaking characters, so we made it based on your entire account.
Edit:
Due to the reward being so high, and the upscaling for the living world, this was seen as being bad.
Didn’t think about that, I’d like to know this as well.
I remember doing something similar as a speedy way to get holiday loot in a GW1 Chinese New Year event… I guess I can come clean now xD
I’m wondering the same thing.. I was going to do this but wanted to make sure it was intended first.
I think it’s an exploit, cause it’s too easy to run through the dungeon and then delete the character and make a new one. Too much gold with little effort.
I really want to know this too because i want to farm the karma for my obsidian shards i could care less about the gold
i did it on my main and a few alts(all level 80) and cant believe anet made it per toon instead of account.there will be a ton of people making a new toon just to farm it then delete that one and make another.
i expect a hot fix
There’s an official statement that the reward should be given only once. I assume that it’s a mistake that it can be obtained repeatedly with alts. Thus technically, it’s an exploit.

I know some people that did this for SAB, still sitting on tons of gold.

I read that post as well but still had doubts if the rewards were intended to be account or character bounded.
Personally I did some runs with my level 80s and thought this could be an exploit so I came to ask, to get things more clear since the concept, as it stands at the moment, is the same as the “key runs” but with higher reward.
Well there was a thread earlier about this exact thing from a player mentioning it which I commented in. The thread got deleted which would lead me to believe it most likely is an exploit which they don’t want people to know about.
This living story dungeon is very similar to the " Black Lion key" farming method. Since there is no penalty for farming the black lion keys, people must have assumed that the rewards were per character since there was no official statement in the patch note about Canach story’s being a 1 time only reward upon release. If Arenanet intended it to be a 1 time only reward they should have said so and go over their content more carefully before releasing to the public. I mean it’s common sense if people notice you can do it per character of course they’re going to farm the gold since Arenanet never told/warned them that the reward was meant to be a one time only upon the patch note release. Any who we can’t for sure tell if it’s an exploit or not until an official statement is released and i don’t think players that have already done this farming should be penalized for a mistake that Arenanet made from rushing the content.

The dungeon was accidentally available before the patch, so the rewards that were being hooked up in the patch were not given to those who did it before the patch. Since we only intended for those rewards to be given once, that means players who did the event once cannot get the rewards again, even if they didn’t already get the rewards the first time during the gap before the patch.
We’re working on a solution to the problem though.
They did intend for it to be a 1 time only reward.
Sounds like an exploit that will/should be fixed. Still I feel this compulsion that if I do not do this I will get left behind and be even more poor than I am. I guess I am going to have to accept not having money and keep my moral high ground.
It’s an exploit. A similar post was removed from the forum.

Yes but this wasn’t released until after the content were made available + if people did not go on the forum they would had never realized that it was a 1-time only reward, the smart thing Arenanet should had done was write it in the Patch Note not on the forum.
How could they release a statement before the content was released stating that there was an error that they didn’t know about before hand?
It is a bug/oversight that it is character specific and it tends to be against policy to highlight and bring to attention bugs and exploits for people to abuse.
Hopefully it wont go on the ban wagon like they have done before, but if they do, then people should expect it because it has happened before. We know what is morally right and wrong I would hope, so make your good judgement yourselves.

Sweet, I can has? xP
If you abuse it then you will get banned. Accidentally doing it on all toons will likely not but I wouldn’t risk it. Farming it will result in a ban.
Thats why i said that they should had go over their content more carefully before they released it instead of rushing the patch and getting players into trouble. Also the Frost and Flame living story quest gave rewards per character and Canach being a living story dungeon people safely assumed that you can do it per character like the Frost and Flame. So how can you really blame the players and + most of the players don’t even realize that the bag of coins actually give a gold, what about those people that are farming for karma kegs for their legendary and never even realized the bag of coins were gold.
I think there would have to be evidence that the player was aware of ANet’s stance on whether or not it’s an exploit. I mean, if I hadn’t seen this thread and just gone in and played on a few different characters and noticed I got it every time, I’d probably do the exploit without even thinking that I was breaking a rule. I mean, it’s in the game, so I don’t think most people would give it a second thought.
On the other hand, if ANet investigates forum posts and sees that the person was posting in this thread, or searched chat logs and saw that the player was chatting with other people and had this discussion, I could see it being a punishable offense.
Just depends on the situation, I think. Since we’re all posting here though, probably shouldn’t risk that, haha. Looks like it’s too late for us folkses.
Really? An exploit? How is it an exploit, if you make a brand new character, you do your introduction fight, you go to Lion’s Arch, you take a ship to Southsun, you’re careful not to die till you get to the place, and you use your skills to defeat this guy, being it easy or hard. This whole process takes like 20-30 minutes. << And all this, within perfect compliance with the game’s rules. No cheating is involved here.
Or, wait, wait.. is it an exploit, because some of you guys don’t have any empty slots left and you can’t do it without deleting your current characters? Oh, I’m sorry about that. I see where you’re going there. Not my fault you filled all of your slots.
My 2 cents.
The only sane post in this thread is written by Leonsky.
(edited by Hank.4839)
So your argument is, we are jealous that we can’t be like you? That’s logical and higher level of thinking and awareness of you.
For the record, I do have a spare character slot that I use to get black lion keys when I have too many chests. I could do this event for 1g every 15-20 minutes. I choose not to though because I am not selfish enough to go against what I think is wrong.
Maybe I am wrong and this was intended and allowed. But again I feel justified in sticking to my moral compass which is telling me that money isn’t everything…even if I am highly tempted

But it was offically said that it was not intended to be a reward per character. And you are posting here in this thread where it was mentioned. So you have to know that it’s an exploit. So don’t do it or don’t whine if you’ll get banned.
Don’t mock me. I’m not saying you’re jealous. But I bet that a lot of people have 8 level 80s already, and would never delete one of their characters just to get 1 gold for 25 minutes.
I don’t really understand what you see as “wrong” here. If the people with full slots and precious characters think that’s an advantage for people like me, who have only 3 characters currently, well that’s a high form of ignorance.
Everybody has the ability to do this, there’s no cheating involved, no advantage, no exploitation.
But of course, if ArenaNet consider this an exploit or whatever, it’s their right as a developer to remove it.
@Niyo – Oh buddy, please. It’s entirely ArenaNet’s responsibility to look after those things. They know best.
Everybody had the ability to buy karma weapons for really cheap and mystic forge them into profitable gains > mass amount of people got banned.
This is not an issue of people having full slots. I think you are in denial and trying to justify actions that you want to take. This is an issue about how “easy” it is to make said gold. It is so easy it seems “too good to be true”.
That said, make your decisions and reap your rewards if you like. I am not mocking you, but you are lashing out at everyone else here who simply are concerned that it may or may not be an exploit, yet you call everyone else “not” sane and blame us for not being able to do what you do. That is a lot of outward aggression to others for questioning an act that you want to partake in.
If the reward is not intended to be character-bound but account-bound, it’s a bug. Using a bug to your advantage is exploit per definition. It’s your choice to exploit and ArenaNet’s choice to ban you for an exploit. Just don’t tell us afterwards that you didn’t know…
Those situations are note the same, at all. I’m not in denial, yes I did this on my characters. No, it’s not “too good to be true”, since you can get one gold faster just by doing a dungeon run that can take like 10 minutes. This takes double the time. And it’s really not that easy, it’s actually quite annoying.
Strong words. I’m not lashing at anybody, I just find it funny how everyone throws the word “exploit” here and there, without thinking of the definition.
Where have I blamed anyone? You’re talking about things I haven’t said. I only said that Leonsky’s post was sane, because it sounds the most realistic to me. The fact that I considered a person’s post to be “sane” doesn’t mean that the other posts in this thread are “insane”.
There’s no aggression involved. You took it wrong.
@Asaturnus – I have yet to hear if the reward was indeed intended to be account-bound.
So, by your words, the black lion key farm is a bug and thus an advantage for those exercising it?
I absolutely agree that it’s ArenaNet’s choice to ban me if I was exploiting something. But I do not consider this an exploit, because I’m actually playing the game normally and not doing anything that I (or we all) aren’t allowed to do by definition.

According to new patch notes:
" All players will now be able claim the reward for completing this instance once more on any character." – Mark Katzbach
This made me question even more if this is an exploit, since they state that the reward can be claimed once on any character, and as someone said before this is not as fast as it seems.
An official answer would be nice .
Ps.:
Guys keep this thread clean no offensive accusations please.
But I bet that a lot of people have 8 level 80s already, and would never delete one of their characters just to get 1 gold for 25 minutes..
Beware that you can have more character slots then 8

Before the patch you should got the reward once per account, but some people haven’t got a reward cause they made the dungeon before the first patch. And now these people can do it again with this character to get it now. (All the other who done it, too.) That’s how I understand this.
Hope it’s now account-bound.
" All players will now be able claim the reward for completing this instance once more on any character." – Mark Katzbach
If I understand correctly, once more on any character doesn’t quite sound to me like it’s account bound.
I’m kinda tired of haggling, really. If it’s a mistake, they will fix it. If it’s not, they will leave it.

its account bound i got nothing at all on my second toon after reset.
@hammer – Well, there you go. So simple, they’ve fixed it. No drama involved.
“Once more on any character” means just one more time per account, period. Right?
If so, and that’s how it is according to hammer, then I am going to kick myself HARD for not speed running my five 80’s through before the hotfix. That’s three gold I cost myself. And I am a poor man…three gold is a lot of gold for me.

Just a simple question that I would love to get answered, if possible by a developer.
Thank You!
Like Halloween, Wintersday, and other living stories;
no it’s not an exploit. It’s actually designed for you to play on your characters and get rewarded similarly.
There we go as hammer.9721 said its account bounded now.
They really need to be more careful with this kind of stuff on content release …
Thank you all and see you another day!
Some people say its still there, but they might have hit the daily reset
Now there ist the offical answer. It WAS an exploit.
And no one is shocked by this confirmation. I find it interesting (in a sad sort of way) how people try to rationalize something they know to be wrong (not morally wrong in our case, but obviously exploitative and not what the developers intended).

I am shocked by this confirmation.
Anet said in reference to key farming
“Making new characters for Black Lion Keys is NOT an exploit. Have fun all!
and a further down
“Are you exploiting when you farm, that is, play the same area over and over again? Nope, not unless you’re using a macro or a bot to do it while you sleep. What I was told was that the devs felt that the time spent was acceptable in relation to the rewards. John later confirmed that it wasn’t an exploit, so I believe the question is covered now.”
What I understand is that farming / repeating content is ok. The only difference between this and key farming is the rewards.
Key Farm ok to delete and recreate character to repeat content.
Canach Farm exploit to delete and recreate character to repeat content.
They are quite similar how could I be expected to know this would be considered an exploit?
the devs felt that the time spent was acceptable in relation to the rewards
