Q:
Crab Tossing? A new mini-game?!

The game draws inspiration from the crab guild challenge but plays a bit differently. There’s achievements, titles, and prizes for participants and winners.

Make it Permanent. I really miss the other mini games. Where will the Polimock be back ?
I want more permanent games as well!
Anet please make more permanent content. I love this living world idea but we need more permacontent!!! Not just permavanity items!! I mean if you put in temp jp’s or dungeons, then keep a version of them somehowwwww
I’m pretty sure it’ll be permanent.

Metrica Province has ‘Rock Em, Sock Em Robots’.
the kegbrawl is in hoelbrak and there will be a barbrawl at some point in the busted flaggon in divinitys reach!
also near the flaggon is another event that can not be done yet some kind of archery game
Although Keg-Brawl was fun, it got old fast. I want to see more mini-games for all cities.
I also hope that it will be permanent.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but wasn’t Bar Brawl completely replaced by Costume Brawl? And reasoning behind it was that CB could be done anywhere in the world, even outside a dungeon entrance waiting for more group members; this is while BB could only be done within the confines of a specific bar not even within the area that most population traverses towards.

You’re wrong, costume brawl was actually added before we got the achievements for, but no ability to actually do, bar brawl. I can’t remember exactly which patch introduced that section of achievements under activities but it wasn’t originally in the game at launch and costume brawl certainly didn’t replace it.
Each new patch I keep thinking that this one must be where they finally add in Bar Brawl so that block of achievements isn’t just a tease, and each new patch it’s revealed to still be a tease, heh.

The Crab Toss is hard but fun. I’ve never managed to beat this when we run it for Guild Missions. I’m hoping the difficulty level is lower for the mini game. Here’s some tips:
1. The ring to run around in is fairly large. We tried to keep our people closer together to DPS the Karka, but that didn’t work out. See point #2.
2. If you’re holding the crab, and the Veteran Karka shows up, run far far away. When he does his barrel roll, he wipes out everyone in his path. It’s game over when you’re balled up.
3. Be aware of where the crab holder is. If he tosses the crab, and it lands on you, don’t just stand there.
One thing you have to remember if they leave all mini-games in permanent you will get bored quick, but if they take it out and re-add it down the line it will be more fun.

Costume Brawl was in @ Halloween. Bar Brawl achievements were added at the time they introduced the Wintersday content. To clarify, Bar Brawl as well as some 25+ activities that were (presumably) planned to be permanent additions to the game were shelved indefinitely. Stuff like Mini Pet Battles and Charr Steam-Car Arenas. You can find more about that in the link on my sig. So no, costume brawl was not replacing it when they put it in.
Also, still a big fan of Keg Brawl here. (Even if it is infested with lobbers and people who have no interest in the actual game and just go and farm for the title. :c)
And I’m looking forward to this crab toss mini game. I’ve added it to the thread in my sig also.

I wouldn’t be surprised if Moa racing or the Charr racing were added in when Dragon Festival hits, that festival was very well known for roller beetle racing which i don’t think we’ll be able to do due to roller beetles being mia, so i could see moas being the next best thing xD

I would like for there to be a title for throwing crabs.

“Master of Crabs”?
Although Keg-Brawl was fun, it got old fast. I want to see more mini-games for all cities.
What Keg Brawl needs is a ranking system similar to sPvP where people can join with Guild groups. Keg Brawl is essentially Rugby and if you were to play it with people using voice communication and from the same Guild imagine how tactical the games played could be.
At present Keg Brawl involves a bunch of people just running in a bundle. It’s fun but it could be so much more.
I like that this is coming into the game and I hope it works out. Truthfully though I find the keg brawl to be very buggy and often unbalanced. So the experience often leaves me never wanting to do it again for weeks and I feel it needs attention.
Also I’d love it if these mini-games offered unique purely silly skins as well. Such as say the keg brawl letting you say keg tickets or something that would let you buy a type of keg back piece skin or even a joke keg underwater breather with a hose feeding the ale directly to you under the water. Nothing serious just fun silly side stuff for people to work toward would be cool. You’d see more people playing this way as well!
Could even make the achievements in it give you something for it. o:
I feel like this minigame is going to be too similar to the guild challenge one.
Am I right?

Title: “I have crabs”

There is a similarity, but the guild challenge revolves around holding on to the crab while your guild kills all of the karka until the timer runs out. If done well, you never have to even toss the crab (we didn’t the last time we did it).
This mini-game might actually do the opposite, where tossing the crab is actually the point and you don’t have the defense, but we’ll have to see more info.
The game draws inspiration from the crab guild challenge but plays a bit differently. There’s achievements, titles, and prizes for participants and winners.
Crab Toss will only be around for the duration of living story events at Southsun Cove. But don’t be too sad, as far as activities go, you might have a very exciting year ahead of you.

Why….why must it leave? I love these mini-games because besides Guild Missions that are set as basically guild-progression required, these can be scheduled and done on a weekly basis in a fun and fashionable style.
Also, how come there wasn’t a mini-game for the Flame&Frost event? How easily it would have fit into the game if you’d made a “Whack-a-Dredge” game or something on that line.
P.S. Any hints on the future of the “very exciting year”?
P.P.S. Any comments on the potential return of Hunger Games?

wait what? what reasoning could you possibly have for this?
look, i understand that some things don’t make sense to be turned into permanent content (like, say, the flame and frost story missions), but ANet’s weird fetish with taking out everything new they make is getting old and damaging the game.
it doesn’t hurt to leave some content behind. we can’t “change and evolve the world” as you want so much if at the end of every month, you just reset back to the status quo.
it’s hard to get excited for new updates when i know that there’s a 9 in 10 chance that anything you add will be gone within a few weeks, for no reason other than “because”.
i’m pretty sure i speak for everyone (including you, apparently, if i go by your sad face) when i say that cleaning out any hint of change every time you make a new update, instead of actually leaving the content in the game for people to enjoy, is not helping anyone. there’s a difference between “one time event that progresses the story” and “almost all of our new content must be temporary”.

Suggestion: Make the crab throwing mini game permanent but make the prizes only last during the duration of the event.

Can I just ask what is your reasoning behind making this (as well as many other things in the game) non-permanent? I don’t want to come off as rude or anything, just it’s been bugging me for a while because I wish I could still have fun with SAB and other things that have been taken out of the game.

As much as I am all in favor for permanent content, I think we have to accept that temporary content is one of the very few dirty tricks ANet has got up their sleeves to “put pressure” on the player base to choose “play now” over “play some time later next month after I have finished Skyrim/The Witcher/Torchlight/Pokemon Black Edition/whatever”. Older MMOs applied this pressure automatically due to the subscription fee (“I have to play today or else I won’t have my money’s worth of game this month”). Since GW2 doesn’t require a subscription (hooray! free at last!) the casual player has to be constantly incentivized to come back to the game.
Also, the removal of content when new content is added helps to focus the player base, which I assume is also intended. And, finally, ANet devs have stated time and again they want the world to feel lively and dynamic. Temporary content contributes to that dynamic feel.
As stated above, I would definitely prefer content to be permanent added to game. (Heck, I didn’t even have time to set a single foot into that new Molten Alliance dungeon, yet.) But ANet also has to take care that the game is successful on the market, and I guess thats their reason for temporary content.

Crab Tossing? Temporary? Achivements? That’s good but…
I swear – If you add Achivement similiar to “Gift Stopper” I’ll throw one at you… I will! :X
Two words: Bar Brawl.
I wonder if Anet really is listening to the people here. I don’t know a lot people wo like temporary content, nontheless they doing it again. Feedback must have been huge after the temporary dungeon.
I understand their intentions, but I can’t agree; not everyone can play all the time. In other mmos you didn’t miss anything when you took a break, you paid your fee and had access to everything. Now you have your final exams, come back and find out that you’ve missed out on great content.
This kind of pressure comes close to the pressure I felt when paying a sub, to be honest.
Oh, come on, keep it permanent. Southsun Cove has few to no people exactly because there isn’t anything to do there.

Yeah that is sad, if only there was a way to make it permanent.
Oh wait, there is. No need to be sad Anthony, just don’t remove it! Wow, that was simple!
But don’t be too sad, as far as activities go, you might have a very exciting year ahead of you.
Or you might have a number of incomplete achievements and half-earned titles! Depending on time available and how long this stuff is kept around.
I dearly hope that ArenaNets PVE plans for the future aren’t going to revolve around miss-able content as one of the benefits of the persistent world and persistent characters in an MMO is that you can have long-term goals that you can work on at your own pace.

That’s exactly it but there is a trade off here as this tactic can have the opposite effect too.
Personally speaking, I enticed one of my RL friends back to help me try out the F&F dungeon and he really enjoyed it and was going to try the rest of the F&F content but faced with impending removal decided there was no point. He realised that with real life pressures he wouldn’t have the time to finish it and so the fact that he’s already missed it even while it’s still in the game just discouraged him further from coming back. “I’ve already missed so there’s not need to come back right now.”
I personally think that adding it as semi-permanent content would have a better net effect on the game: have the content time out at least three months after completion, not 12 days after adding it, like the finale of Flame & Frost.
12 days isn’t a lot of time for people who are busy in the real world, busy with their jobs or families and those people who don’t have a lot of time because they’re busy in real life are, I think, more likely to spend cash in the Gem Store than those who have a lot of in-game time to make gold to buy gems and obviously people spending cash in the Gem Store benefits everyone.
Cutting them out doesn’t make sense for anyone.

Whle I’m sure I won’t be too sad about a minigame leaving. I do find it very strange that such a mini game couldn’t stay after the living story has come and gone.
Since it’s advertised as “relaxation time” or to blow off steam as the May-page says, That typically fits in the premisses of a vacation / tropical beach kind of place.
It’s like removing the equivalent of beach volleyball while the beach is in fact still there.
Very strange. =P

Ok, I’ve got to ask, are you guys ever going to make permanent content? Or is temporary content all we are going to keep getting? I don’t even know if I’ll like it yet, but even if I do, now I know its not even gonna stay. I keep getting more and more frustrated/ kitten by this game, because you keep making us play to your schedule instead of letting us play the content at our own pace. I really really hope you aren’t putting more exclusive items in RNG chests (either cash ones from Gem store or chest at end of content like Molten Facility).
Please give us a keyring…
I don’t want just to throw them I want to CRUSH THEM. creepy little kittens chasing me while I’m trying to complete the guild rush.
Also all mini games should have tournaments attached to them every now and again to make them extremely busy and with lots of numbers you could new people into them.
NOOOOOO! Why? Again a temporary content? We lost the Molten Facility and as we read now, we’re going to lose the mini game too. Why?
Now yet I have some goal to do (9 character map complete, story complete) but the time is soon when I’m going to get bored. Honestly The Flame and Frost can play out during a day. If I achieve all of my goals, the Living Story will not enough to stay in the game.
I’m trying to delay as much as possible. All of my lvl80 characters did Braman’s and Rox’s story. Honestly reward was nothing, but I must try to delay my goals. Every day did Molten Facility or I collect some Super Weapon. But if my character will map completer and story completer, that contents will not enough to stay and log in to play every day.
BUT, <- this is a very big BUT. If all big repeatable content (like Molten Facility, Crab Tossing) would be permanent then Tyria would evolve enough to stay. ANET must encourage us to stay. But the living story is not enough yet.
Activities are the only thing I’d like to stay… I understand other things evolving, changing, going away, etc, but activities…
I cant we just have mini games forever? ;o
I like hermit crabs, even tho mine always died.
As much as I do like the idea of Living Story we should have some things permanent so it doesn’t feel like Flavor of the Month content all the time.
With the Karka event the most we got was the island itself, which didn’t have much. Now with this SouthSun going in to put something there we should have activities that are lasting past the story time.

I’m just wondering, WHY do you keep doing this?
One of the complaints that people have with the game is that there isn’t much to do at level 80 except repeating dungeons and fractals. Some mini-games and new dungeons would allow for more variation, yet every time you add something to the world, it’s TEMPORARY. What’s the logic behind this?

Basically, the reason they’re focusing on temporary content is to make people think that “if I don’t log in now I’ll miss out”. So they log in, play the game, see the gem store stuff and maybe buy something.
It introduces a pressure to play the game now, not next week or next month, that will work in the short term. However sooner or later everyone will miss out on stuff because of real life issues and that can really irritate your customers (look at the backlash over the Lost Shores Weekend) and irritated customers are more likely to simply walk away from the game. It’s a fine line.
ZAM’s article has some new info on the mini game:
The new Crab Toss mini-game sounds like a new activity similar to Keg Brawl. Will it come with its own set of achievements?
Scott McGough: It will indeed. It will also have titles and prizes for both participants and winners.
Are other activities that had been announced such as Bar Brawl and Target Range in Divinity’s Reach being pushed back to be released with more closely themed Living Story content?
Scott McGough: We haven’t identified a Living World release for those two in particular, but we love activities around here, so if we don’t release these eventually it’ll be because other activities were a better fit.
Is Crab Toss going to be a multiplayer instance, and if so will players be working against each other or as a team?
Scott McGough: Crab Toss will be a multiplayer instance, and PCs will be competing against each other in an “every adventurer for him/herself” situation.
Will Crab Toss be like a hot-potato game, where the player who holds the crab is the target of the karka attacks and must toss the crab to another player before the karkas reach said player?
Scott McGough: Short answer: yes, but with a twist. There’s a bit more to it than straight hot potato (and some serious high-stress strategy for those brave enough to enter the arena), but I’ll leave all the details for players to discover.

I don’t agree. I don’t think it’s a bad idea with temporary content. It makes the game much more dynamic and fun. The extra fun factor exist only because of the short period of that special content. If all the now removed contents (halloween/wintersday and so on…) were still around, they all would have lost their affection value. No one would bother doing them ( well maybe except the Mad king dungeon, that was just epic!)
My point is, that the temporary content makes the game more interesting.
Yes, you might miss the chance to do all the temporary contents due to lack of time or rl issues, but at least you know there will be more and new content in a short period of time. Maybe you get the time to get those!
Don’t be sad people, at least they didn’t make temporary characters so we can always play them!
