Sclerite Weapons Tickets - Next to Impossible
Why they make new weapon skins that are nearly impossible to get? I´m sure that even if you buy 1000 crate you dont get ticket.
and the event only lasts a month, right? it’s not like this is over a year
Because every time they make one of these RNG boxes a handful of idiots spends about $200 each on them. Even people who spend a “reasonable” amount probably pay more than they would if it was a straight sale.
As long as that keeps happening they’re going to keep doing it for 2 reasons: 1) it’s profitable and 2) they’ll look at number of complaints on the forum vs. number of boxes sold and conclude that a vocal minority don’t like them but the majority do, even if it’s actually a minority of players buying huge numbers of boxes.
Basically your best option is to stop buying them and hope everyone else comes to their senses and does the same. And until they do there’s plenty of other cool weapon skins in the game.
“Life’s a journey, not a destination.”
Actually I was about 10 minutes on the event area, did not even had the MF buff (I didn’t know how to get it ) and just jumped in an event-fight, a crate dropped and it had a ticket…
Yesterday I felt like supporting the game a bit, but didn’t know what to buy. Since I need karka shells but have less time to play I decided to buy some crates. So I bought ten and another ticket….
It is luck. Very very random luck.
I was never very lucky (600 hours playing the game and I have under 100 expos. You have an idea how many rares dropped to me before the special-chests for the world events were added. haha) I don’t know what to think of this super random luck. I have gotten only one good color so far (that expensive dark blue one) while I have opened all colors that every dropped. The girl whom lives in the house next to me played under 60 hours and already got a third black-color. Haha.
Random drops are random,. you can’t do anything about it. You could get a ticket in the first box like me, or in box number 4000. Nobody knows : (
Btw. I don’t mind very rare weapons at all. I just find it sad that amazing skins, such as the molten weapons from last moth, disappear. It’d be great to keep them, amybe elt them drop at a tiny chance in the farctals or soemthing. And make them tradeable.
Also… we now FINALLY get some Horror-Themed weapons. We have too less stuff for the evil looking characters and now these skins will be gone too : /

It’s profitable – but it’s irresponsible.
By allowing this kind of addictive spending and making things so rare you’re hurting your player base.

You could say that about drug companies that sell medications with deadly side effects, restaurants that load a single menu item with two days’ allowance of fat and salt, companies that sell diet pills and “herbal supplements” of dubious effectiveness, and any number of other less than honorable businesspeople who take advantage of someone’s ignorance or gullible nature.
You’re talking about digital items that have no effect whatsoever on the game. They have created items that people desire, and in part that desirability is due to the rarity of the items. You are complaining about successful marketing.
It’s good that there are people willing to watch out for consumers, and who punish companies for stepping over the line. But people must take responsibility for their own lives and control their urges, particularly in situations where the products themselves do no harm to the individual, it is merely his own desire to have some kind of fleeting satisfaction from showing off a weapon skin that few other people have – a satisfaction that would fizzle out even faster if suddenly everyone around him also had the “exclusive” weapons.
Completely agree with you tolunart – people need to be responsible for their own actions, however, when you hear that people are spending $200+ on RNG items and still not getting them, it’s crazy, and out of control. I think ANET should re-think the way their RNG items are done.
I think SWTOR has a better idea with a monthly allowance of cartel coins (or black lion keys if you want here) and have the items be tradable, so that people have multiple sources of attaining them.
I think it’s a step past effective marketing.
You’re contradicting yourself – people should be responsible for their own actions, except that Anet should tell them not to spend so much money?
They are not forced to spend anything, I’ve spent less than $250 on this game since it was released, including copies of the game for my wife and I.
If someone walks into McDonald’s alone and orders a large Big Mac meal, and another Big Mac, does the cashier say “oh no, you’re too fat already, you can only have a salad.” They are happy to take your money and give you what you want. It’s up to you to control those urges and say when you’ve had enough.

I dig the weapon skins, but A.Net, whoever thought of putting these behind these kitten lockbox needs a wake up call to utter contempt people have for them. Who ever is behind these boxes, who ever you might be, even face to face, I will tell you, stop doing these this. You are only making yourself and A.net look bad. And only more so the more this BS continues.

.
The last time I played SWTOR, only subscribers got monthly coins. When those ran out, or if you didn’t sub, you bought them via credit card just like GW2 gems. And free players couldn’t even carry enough in game currency to buy some of the items sold through the marketplace, prices reached into the millions. I don’t know what it’s like now.
(edited by tolunart.2095)
Yes, but if we use your example, a bartender will stop serving someone if they’ve had too much to drink.
Also, in SWTOR, you get a monthly set of coins if you sub yes, but there are other ways to get the items than just the RNG – you can trade for them, and don’t need to buy extra coins.
It’s a skin, you don’t need it.
If you want it, start farming/buying. If it’s not worth the trouble than don’t do it. It is not detrimental to your gameplay NOT to have the skin.
I fail to see how this is hurting the playerbase in any way what-so-ever. They’re not giving ascended gear, they’re not giving anything that makes you a better player or gives better stats… it’s just a skin, you don’t need it. You don’t magicly get more awesome because you have a scelerite weapon.
I never said I need it. I said it’s very very very difficult to get for most players. I don’t understand why ANET implemented it this way, aside from forcing players to purchase a large quantity of gems to take a CHANCE of getting these items.
You missed the whole point of my post. Anet isn’t forcing you to do anything. You can just not get the skin.
Yes, but if we use your example, a bartender will stop serving someone if they’ve had too much to drink..
Only because the bar would be held responsible if the customer drove drunk and killed someone. There were – and probably still are – bars where you could drink until you passed out. Then they’d take your wallet and throw you in the alley behind the bar to sleep it off.
Yes but Max, why would they introduce something that presumably they want people to work to get, and then make it so difficult to actually attain? You’re right, they’re not twisting ANYONE’s arm to go do it, it’s entirely up to us. But if you have an event for 1 month only, and make it nearly impossible to get the item, what’s the point of introducing it?
And Tolunart, I don’t completely disagree with you, I’m just saying I don’t think it’s the best model, as it allows people to get out of control.
That’s the general idea. Look at the Wintersday Skins, no one uses them because they were soooo common. It’s been 5 months since Wintersday and the skins are still at less than 10 silver.
The idea behind rare items is to give them value. Yes, putting them in lottery boxes is a way to make money, and yes they are a company that needs to make money to continue to keep the game running, but no one is forcing you to get this skin. If you think it’s unfair or you don’t like the way it’s implemented… the solution is simple, don’t get it.
Yep, you’re right. It’s unfortunate, but that’s really the only solution

Are you really comparing winterdays skins to the f/f and the one from southsun? Why not compare them to the halloween event that shield skin still sells for over 200g.The reason why people dont use the winterdays skins are because of how they look not because they are common.
I wont even bring up the sab skins and how many people are using them and anyone could get them. The reason why the new skins are in crates is to make money. It has nothing to do with trying to keep them rare.

ok, I’ll play that game. Lets say that they’re in the crate to make money. No one is forcing you to get one. They need to make money, they’re a company who sells a game. You don’t like the system that’s being used… alright cool, don’t use it. Keep playing the game, you don’t need a new skin to enjoy the game.

True. I prefer to control myself, though, rather than let other people decide for me.

Thought i said they are doing it to make money.I just wanted you to see how wrong your little comparison was.You are right though i dont need that skin but since it would look good on my toon i wish i had a way to get it without playing the lottery and no i wouldnt just buy it from the tp i want to earn it.
All i wish was there was one modern mmo left where you just paid your sub and had no cash shop but them days are gone.i will stick with gw2 until the first xpac then im done with the genre completly.
The goal for ArenaNet is to make money, yes, but I believe that gating new skins behind paid RNG is forsaking long term profits for short term profits.
Your average player is risk averse, and sooner or later they’ll learn to stop buying chests; additionally, paid RNG may even drive customers away from Guildwars towards another game (and there are several major competitors on the horizon). There is also the entire ethical dilemma that ArenaNet’s target market here are individual’s without impulse control or prone to gambling — it really doesn’t paint the company in a positive light.
And @Max: there are alternatives outside of boycotting the boxes, chiefly complaining here and on social media. Just as ArenaNet’s job is to maximize profits it’s our job to maximize our consumer surplus — if enough individuals complain on e.g. twitter, ArenaNet might move away from paid RNG.
My own personal experience and stats:
30 Hours of Farming
-20 Crates
-2 Tickets
250% mf
2015-2016
Fort Aspenwood
Maximillian is the voice of reason.

right cause ya know… there aren’t people out there addicted to games or anything. Oh man! bars target people who are addicted to booze, we should totally outlaw alcohol. Gotta close all those casinos too! People can get addicted to caffeine, better go picket starbucks.
Honestly, I have no complaints about the skin. I’ve been farming karkas for EVER trying to get one, and I’ll keep farming till I get it. I have noooo problem with that. I understand the company has to make money to stay afloat, and as long as there’s no “pay to win” I’m totally fine with it.

That’s a faulty comparison, but in many instances there are laws in place to protect those kinds of individuals (whether or not this is enforced is another story). The gaming industry (as far as I know and might be totally off) has escaped scrutiny and haven’t had any gambling regulations placed against them; however, continued use of predatory RNG may lead to exactly that, e.g. see: http://www.reddit.com/r/Guildwars2/comments/1dkkj6/ama_i_spent_over_6000_usd_on_gems_since_start/
ArenaNet is a business and I expect them to maximize profit; however, I believe that excessive RNG is going to leave their player base jaded and alienate both existing and new players. Ultimately this is bad for both us and them.
What’s the approximate drop rate for the southsun crates? and then what’s the RNG rate to get a ticket from the crates?
It seems like ArenNet has made it next to impossible for casual and even most hardcore gamers to get a ticket without purchasing a ton of tickets.
I think it’s ridiculous that the drop rates are so low that a casual gamer who really wants the weapon skins, are screwed.
I’ve spent probably 10+ hours farming the crates, and have gotten maybe 10-12 crates, with no ticket drop. I’ve also been frustrated and purchased 20 crates with no tickets.
This doesn’t seem to be achieving the goal of (I’m assuming) giving your players new content.
The same was with the molten weapons. I understand wanting them to be rare, but leaving it up to RNG and really low drop rates is punishing players.
Thats because DR hits. 70 crates is a good chance. And its easily doable with 3 crates a day with the amount of time we have left, which is what 23 or 24 days? I can get 3 crates in the first hour. After that im outta luck. If you farm each day 5 crates, than you have a very good chance. Don’t give up.
I have spent over 4 hours a day in Southsun, split up to avoid DR, and yet to have even 1 crate drop. And that is with MF over 350%!
There are many other games out there using the same gating mechanism (you know who you are!) which has the same amount of irate comments in the forums (grab bags from one of them are called “scam bags” in the forums), and that hasn’t stop them from adding more and more content using that mechanism. All the games from a specific gaming company uses this very same mechanism, and they get tons of money.
So, vent off… RNG boxes are here to stay. As long as they only have one or two uber-rare items in them, I’m ok. If they start putting uber-powerful items in there, then I’ll complain.
If you really want the skin, farm the hell out of SouthSun and don’t consider purchasing the crates from the gem store until the event is about to close down. I’ve farmed skelks for about 4 hours total in SS and have gotten 6 SS crates to drop. On the sixth I got a claim ticket to pop out.
I honestly find it hard to believe all these people are having so much trouble getting the crates. I understand the skin is rare, but from my experience and so many others who I talk to the crates aren’t rare at all. I farm the skelks at the SE corner of Southsun for 1 hour at a time every day for the past 6 days. I have yet to go a single hour without getting a crate and the same goes for everybody who I usually farm with. So in about 6 hours of farming spread throughout a week I’ve gotten 19 crates and a weapon ticket(on my 14th chest). And this is just with the 200% MF find buff.
If you guys want the ticket, go farm the skelks. Not only do they die WAY faster than karkas(and there are lots of them which respawn fast in a close area) so you can kill more per minute which that alone gives you a higher chance of getting chests and therefore tickets, but they also(again, from my experience) drop powerful bloods way more frequently plus vicious claws. One hour will get me anywhere from 4-17 powerful bloods(I’d say the average is about 9/h). And at 25s(33s at times) a blood, that’s some good money you’re making while farming for crates.

Thanks for the post and the location.I been just farming karkas because as a mes all you have to do is drop a traited warden and its dead in like 5 secs with you just standing there.Maybe i will have better luck with the skelks and at least it wont be so mind numbing boring since i can actually do something.

AoE is your friend, btw. There are usually 2-10 other people trying to farm along that coast, so being able to tag multiple targets at a time before the groups kill them is good. I personally round up a bunch of them, AoE them a bit, then jump around in circles while waiting for the rest of the people to come and tag them so I don’t feel so selfish for killing them by myself, but most people don’t really care whether or not you get to tag them. So just make sure to tag them as soon as they pop up and more-than-likely somebody else will finish them off as you move onto the next skelk(s).
EDIT:
@skullmount: Are you just running around doing events, farming karkas, or killing fast-spawning easy-to-kill mobs in mass amounts for hours at a time? All while under the MF buff of course. If it’s one of the first two then I can understand you not getting even a single crate yet, but if the third option then I wouldn’t believe that you could go for multiple hours farming skelks and not get even a single crate without video of the entire time spent farming. If you still failed to get a crate then yeah, you’re somehow incredibly unlucky or have somehow hit perma-DR. I hate RNG as much as the next person and this is the only time in my entire gaming life that I’ve ever gotten lucky from RNG but I really don’t think crates are as rare as people on these forums lead you to believe.

After spending almost 30+ bucks on gem cards I walked away with one sellable mini pet. (because I didn’t feel like hording a tiny woman in a bikini thank you). All other drops from the box are things I can just gather while running around.
If I spend money on a game I don’t have to I like to be rewarded… there should be at least 1 ticket in each set of 10x boxes you buy.
If you want to farm that’s fine but since I opened at least 30 crates I have had no luck and it get’s annoying over time really. Even with magic find boons.

Well perhaps I will try lowering my MF to 200% and farm skelks but I will not hold my breath while doing so. If I get just one crate I will be a happy camper, forget about what is inside the crate!
So I set my MF at 207% and farmed skelks for one hour exact. The last time I was on Southsun Island was 28 hours ago so DR should not have had an impact on my results. In one hour of farming I got the following:
42 Dark stained claws
1 spiral shell (errant crab)
7 salvageable hides
Common (white items)
1 chainmail shoulders
1 rawhide leggings
1 acolyte cowl
1 acolyte pants
Blue Items
1 Beserker Pirate’s hat
1 Rampager’s Pirate boots
1 Travellers Krytan Bow
1 Cleric dagger
25 large fangs
25 vials of potent blood
6 vicious fangs
2 vials of powerful blood
Green Items
1 Carrion cabalist hood of Melandru
1 Rampagers rifle of grawl slaying
1 Beserkers spear of grawl slaying
1 Rampagers greatsword of the hydromancer
2 Black Lion Chests
And a grand total of ZERO crates. Not one! Not even the hint of one.
Am I glad I did not hold my breath for that hour. I have a pretty good idea of what they can do with their rng.

Well unfortunately – no matter how efficient you may be or what you’re farming – RNG is still a kitten. You are, however, the first person that I know to have farmed skelks for an hour and not get any crates, so congratulations there =P.
got 2 crates and 2 rares my first 15 minutes doing skelks but then i got greedy and formed a 4 man group and the next 45 minutes nothing for me.At least almost everyone in the party got i crate i guess.I did make around 9g total for an hour which isnt bad for non cof 1 runs.

I’ve been doing the first one (though I think the instigator ones are the largest portion), and partially the second one. I’m not usually doing anything like that for more than an hour. I haven’t tried the third option before. Lately (past two days or so) I’ve been running at least 238% (thats with the settler buff). I know I’m pretty unlucky in general, so I have no doubt it transfers to the game as well. Unless it’s something I can farm with a guaranteed drop (like SAB rewards) or can buy it out right from the BLTC, I tend to never get anything good (I think I’ve got 3, possibly 4, exotics since the headstart).
Please give us a keyring…
It’s simple really. When they put items in gambling boxes, people complain, but people also keep buying the boxes.
When they put items in a chest a player isn’t skilled enough to reach or open, the player gives up after a few tries and complains that the game is too hard.
The people actually developing the game can only fix one of these complaints by themselves.
With the RNG boxes, there’s a shield wherin developers can point at the monetization management, but still keep that management happy because monetization managers don’t really care if players are having fun. That’s the developer’s job. if it makes money, it’ll get sold, unless Developers also make financial decisions for the company. As far as I know Developers don’t make the financial decisions at Arenanet, so the contents of the gem store and stuff like gambling boxes are implemented by people who aren’t concerned with fun, while the developers try as hard as they can to make up for that feeling of exploitation.

Well went back tonight but with a different character. Same results. After an hour of farming skelks I got dyes, blood, fangs and assorted junk but again not one crate with +200% mf.
So all in all, farming skelks, karkas, the events and everything that moved on that Island I would estimate I have spent close to 20 hours there with not one crate and with MF ranging from 200% to 371%. Yet some people are opening over 100 crates from drops?
You missed the whole point of my post. Anet isn’t forcing you to do anything. You can just not get the skin.
Yes, i don’t have to play the game either. Your point?
Remember, remember, 15th of November
just accept you have one of those unlucky-accounts … i for myself have accepted it … i’ve never ever found anything fantastic in the game (although i’ve read everywhere how simple it is with just farming special things) … also farming events or karkas or something ended in nothing – so i returned to my normal play after 3 days of farming SS and do some dragons and i’m happy there is a box with a yellow item in it because the normal bosschest has only greens and blues for me …
it’s RNG … it’s not the best thing in the game but it wouldn’t change cause there are enough people buying the boxes …
