They should have done something like this:
30/35 achievements in the Secret Of Southsun Cove category = 1 ticket
35/35 achievements in the Secret Of Southsun Cove catagory = 1 ticket
Those who don’t want to touch crab toss or just suck at it are able to get 1 ticket with out ever touching it by finishing all the achievements (not counting crab toss)
Those who are good at crab toss are able to get a 2nd ticket by getting the last 5.
the problem with all these suggestions is that it ceases to be a rare weapon. If everyone has 100% access to the skins then it’s not a rare weapon anymore, and it looses it’s value. I like the system they currently have. most people don’t have one, a very select few do. That select few stand out, which I like.
No matter how difficult it is to acquire, if there’s a 100% chance to get it… the game will be flooded with them. Look how many legendaries are around. Just walk around LA for 5 minutes and you’ll see them all over the place.

Problem with your line of logic is you either don’t care or don’t know that not everyone cares bout prestige in items. Most wanna just attain a certain look regardless of rarity. Also to assume stuff needs a certain level or prestige to be worth something here’s a healthy tip. Don’t be so vain on an mmo to the point that you enjoy the game at other people’s expenses in an attempt to feel “cool or respected”

Really? Because I bought my Warrior a chainsword (1h) skin from the TP and hardly anyone else on my server uses it, even though it was easily obtainable. Honestly I’ve seen more people wielding Bolt than I have the chainsword.
The more choices people have, the rarer each item is likely to become. If it showed any particular achievement on behalf of the player (like, say, a legendary or even the dungeon weapons) I might have more sympathy with your point of view, but these skins signify nothing other than you were lucky in a raffle.

The problem with your train of thought is that an item that cannot be traded or sold, by default, has a value of 0. You can have the only one in game and its still worth 0 copper.
Secondly, IMO, these skins represent a very nice change of pace. Half the time I login to the game I feel like I logged into my little pony online, my screen is full of unicorn bows shooting rainbows, sunshine swords, clown guns shooting confetti making cute noises and rainbow sta kitten . Some people dont like that sort of theme and have been patiently waiting quite a long time for some more serious themed skins. Locking them behind RNG is just bad.
For the record I wanted a dagger skin and did manage to get lucky, I still feel its a terrible system

Since you cannot sell it anyway, it has no monetary value at all. And it still looks as good (or bad) as ever regardless if only one person has it, or everyone does. Neither does it have any prestige value, because it didn’t require any effort on your part, just luck.
So i don’t see any problem with making the skins directly buyable.
WOW, these crates are an absolutely F’ing JOKE.
I have 3 tickets. Probably around 100 crates opened from general play and some farming.
It’s really too bad these aren’t transferable. I hate the skins. I can’t imagine someone wasting hundreds of gold or real dollars on them.

I somehow got the feeling that guild wars marks every character when you create them. Depending on that variable your character gets more or less luck throughout the game.
I mean come on; my most expensive exotic was 4 gold, i’ve never gotten the alpha golem in wvw and every time i farm with my friends, they get more loot than me.
Also sitting on about 350 crates now – no ticket.
The weapon tickets are so difficult to get it feels like we are being punished by the development team of Guild Wars 2. I understand grinding to get a skin, I understand the company is trying to make money, but when I run around for 3 days with 250% + MF and after 50+ chests and get nothing! NOTHING! What the hell? Out of the people in my guild only one person has received 1 ticket. ONE! If they want these skins to be so exclusive, make the venders stay out for more than a few weeks. This ISN’T fun, this ISN’T helping the community! This is making the players MAD and that cost more money than these skins can possibly be worth.
Heck, I didn’t even find a quarter of the amount of chests people in here did and I farmed as well. Granted, the Southsun weapon tickets aren’t my exact cup of tea(I find few of them pleasing), but it absolutely horrifies me what I might have to do to get a Jade weapon skin if GW2 stays the standard course. Frost and Flame, Wintersday…the having skins obtainable in AND out of the store was amazing…this, not so much.
Out of 150 crates, I get one ticket on crate 148. Completely unacceptable. I was more upset that I got one at 148 crates than I was excited.
I started playing swtor again a few months ago, and I have to say there crates are waaaaay better than what gw2 provides.
It literally makes me sick to my stomach what bull crap they pulled off with these southsun crates. And to think, today is my first day coming back to gw2 after about 3 months. I doubt I will last more than a few weeks if they pull this same crap with the Dragon Bash.
Well sad facts are in anets eyes these rng boxes “are working as intended” they use the less than 1% drop rates to reward 1 person and sadly sacrifice 100; or in this case 1000’s. They make awesome skins and make “luck” the only method of obtaining them. Imo no game should “luck” reward above hard work, that is a messed up system. All these people defending anets stance on this are either A) people the “blessed” with luck or people who don’t want the item anyway. As many people the did not bless with luck really want these skins and spent time and rl money in some cases only to get “sorry its rng” nothing we can do……..
“There’s nothing more frustrating than spending real money and/or running content for hours and hours to get nothing”
I think that sums it up.
Not seen 1 ticket or know anyone who got one….
and the boxed give useless items…total rip off.
Not impressed.

This isn’t really true.
With a limited time event like southsun, the items can still be rare, even if you give players a method to achieve it without RNG.
My extreme example in this (or perhaps another similar) thread is that you give players the chance to get a ticket drop from RNG, but supplement it with a sure-thing way to get it by trading, for example, 100,000 karka shells.
100,000 karka shells is probably unreasonable, but it illustrates the point – even though there is a 100% sure-thing way to get the item, it will be rare that someone can actually save up 100,000 karka shells, thus, maintaining the “rare” status of the item. That way, the people who did the grind and opened 200+ crates, could probably have spent the same amount of time to grind the sure-thing method.

Wintersday skins were limited available and sold on the store for 500gems a piece. There are gone now. Did this made them more common? I have the Winter’s Edge greatsword and I ussually get 2-4 whispers every day from people asking me what skins is that and where they could get it. Sure the sclerite skisn may be common in the next few weeks if they were sold on the gemstore but they become rare with time.
In my case the drop rate is 0.
Some accounts like mine are cursed with negative loot modifiers I guess.
5 crates (3hours farm)->2 tickets, 0 minis.
And I don´t want sclerite weapons only minis,xD.

When I’ve been home, I’ve been in Southsun hoping for crates to drop. Yesterday after spending quite a long time doing every event, wandering the island killing random mobs, focusing in one area killing mobs doing the Karka Queen events twice. I got two Supply Crates.
I’ve opened so many crates I’ve lost count (somewhere over 100) no weapon ticket. I have a better chance at finding a Southsun Supply Crate inside the Supply crate than getting a weapon ticket….I’ve gotten two Supply crates inside supply crates.
I have no gold left to convert to gems and I can’t afford to buy any more gems either. I was hoping for the tickets to be a little more common than they are but it’s looking like I’ll never get the scelerite axe and dagger I wanted, or even just the warhorn.
cries bitter tears I am so extremely disappointed, upset and soured over this. I have done nothing but roam Southsun looking for crates only to be disappointed over and over again.
Lady luck is fickle and she has taken all my crates and filled them with junk.
5 crates (3hours farm)->2 tickets, 0 minis.

This is exactly why being tradeable would be so much better.
Farmed Since release, opened beyond 50 chests (gave up counting) no claim ticket, got a Mini Kasmeer and some 5s skins about it.
Have opened like 15 of these, Goddarn! Not even one!
But I can’t be unfair, I got a Fused Weapon ticket on my 1st on a Lion chest. Still, I feel so frustrated…I’ve been farming these stuff just to get a skin and haven’t got even a mini….
In the post on Dragon Bash, it seems they didn’t listen to any of these threads:
“Throughout the world, Dragon Coffers will drop a variety of items including Zhaitaffy candy, fireworks, and a holographic minion minipet. Plus, there’s a chance for Dragon’s Jade weapon skin tickets. These dragon-inspired designs will only be available through Dragon Coffers.”
So Dragon Coffers = Southsun Crates.
More farm, more RNG, more extremely frustrated players. Great job ANET

Depends. There are also Royal Dragon Coffers, which might have a guaranteed skin drop (the wording does suggest it, but is not 100% clear). These likely will come from the shop.
There’s hope:
“As far as weapon drops, we will have a weapon set available and tickets will drop in regular and rich Dragon Coffers which you can get in the gem store. The regular Dragon Coffers, unlike other festival boxes will be tradable. They will drop off everything in the world and are rewarded them for doing almost everything. "
I’m reserving judgement, but just found this – there may be hope yet.
I didn’t get any crates depsite spending a long time in Southsun..so i put money into buying them from TP…..the same 3 items popped up every time….
Come on Anet this is unacceptable….
1) the drop rate for a sclerite weapon skin ticket is waaayyyy too low…
2) the same 3 items is not a memorable token of Southsun as is claimed on the TP is it?………
this is the first time I have been disapointed with this game since Beta.
I finally got a ticket. Only took me about 420~ crates
I finally got a ticket. Only took me about 420~ crates
420 crates and only one ticket? I hope you’re joking. If not, i hope you didn’t get those crates by spending real money.
I would have given up nearly all of my in-game acquisitions over the first eight months for a fused weapon ticket during F&F. From now until the game ended my Charr warrior would have been wielding a fused greatsword because it would have gone perfectly with the look I’m trying to create for him. Fortunately, there are a couple similar weapons that will do, but I find them just a bit off. I opened all 78 BL chests I had saved up and while getting several makeover kits and good dyes, it was still a letdown.
I’m not a big fan of the sclerite weapon skins, so I didn’t bother trying to farm or purchase any chests, but I feel you guys.
Of course, I do very much believe that having exceptionally rare items in games is important in reminding players that they are very truly sharing the game world with other players in the “That’s the guy with the Warglaives of Azzinoth!” sense, but at least a persistent 1 in a million drop could happen to me some day.
So it’s the time sensitivity of the skins that I have an issue with rather than the loot rate. I would rather them make the skin tickets much rarer but make them a permanent addition via the Black Lion chests rather than do what they’ve done with the fused and sclerite skin tickets. If people are going to keep forking over real cash until they get the skin they want, that’s their problem, not mine, but if they did it that way, at least some day I might loot a key and open a chest and find my ticket … and that makes a world of difference to me personally.
Nope.. I foolishly spend $100 on jems and spent it all on crates. No skin.. not even a mini.. not that I really wanted one. That’s it for me. I have 8 each of the perma harvesting tools.. no more RNG. It’s a bit sad I feel put off from playing this game now. I feel like I’ve just woken up just in time to stop a gambling addiction. This kinda is really isn’t it? Real money gambling for a jackpot of a skin. Just feel like playing Mech Warrior Online where i know when I pump $$ into it, I get what I pay for.
Guess I"m just feeling disappointed in both the game and myself. :-\

I’m sorry I hate seeing people do this.
Spent enough gold to get around 120 crates. (And I was saving up for a legendary)
No dagger skin for the necro even after farming some crates from karkas/skelks.
Really a sad panda. As probably most people who wanted a ticket and haven’t got any, even more people who actually spend real money.
If I really wanted karka shells I could’ve just go and farm then in Crab Toss.
Rare is rare, ok but is it fine that people that couldn’t possibly care about weapon skins are stuck with them and others, even those who threw money on their screens, got nothing?
Aside allowing tickets to a different use as some more meaningful purpose for those who don’t want them (like a random exotic with a high precursor chance for example: because that’s rarity level pretty much), allow it as a permanent addition or increase the droprates, because as it is, it’s very annoying(and frustrating for who try) to have such -low droprates-, especially from Gem Boxes from what I saw, to get something that exists only for a -limited period of time-.
I spent the entire evening in Southsun after I got home from work. From about 4pm EST to 11:30pm EST. I did events, farmed sharks, killed Karka, skelks and everything else that got in my way. Even with 440+% MF the entire night’s total I got 4 crates.
So for the event I’m well over 100 crates opened and never did get a ticket.
I wanted a scelerite weapon for my necro. I know it’s just a game and it’s not the end of the world that I didn’t get one, but it absolutely breaks my heart that I didn’t get one and my husband feels bad because he got one with his very first crate.

I hate RNG SO much.

Well I agree with you man. I think it’s ironic how people downed your opinion about rarity in items, when majority of the people posting here are trying hard to get the skin. If people think it’s ugly then why even bother about commenting about the skin; unless of course you want it because it’s rare.
Granted, I just read that the RNG system is favorable amongst ArenaNet, but they have improved the chance to get the weapon skins in the next update (coming today). The skins also are more vibrant than the Southsun skins.
One thing I hope to see change, is tickets becoming sellable. I’m happy with the small chance, but at least give players the option to sell/trade the tickets if they don’t want it. I really dislike all of the items that are “bound” to the player. I’d say majority of the nice items are like this.
“The Rich Dragon Coffer is now available in the Consumable category of the Gem Store for 100 gems each, or 5 for 400 gems and 25 for 2,000 gems. This special festival box always contains Dragon Bash candy and also has a chance to contain fireworks, a Mini Holographic Risen Knight, and rarely a Dragon’s Jade Weapon Skin Ticket. Rich Dragon Coffers contain all the same items as the Dragon Coffers that drop commonly from Dragon Bash enemies, but have better chances at rare items.”
No guaranteed ticket. Likely just as horrendous an RNG-fest as Sclerite.
I’m really disappointed in them on this one. I thought perhaps they would have learned from SAB and the increased outrage over the Fused and Sclerite weapons.
