Why -is- it called Crab Toss?
I should be called Crab Roll

If you are good you use the crab toss skill to throw it at a chasing opponent, knocking them down. Then you steal it back and run away!

This. It’s a good tactic for dealing with opponents if it’s just 1v1 or 1v2. Not as useful when there’s a big rush of opponents though.
Also, keep in mind this is a game invented in part by the Norn. It sounds to me like they just went “We need a name for this! KEG TOSS + CRABS = CRAB TOSS. DONE.”
Except for “keg toss” actually being called “keg brawl”….
I could have lived with “crab brawl”…

Good point OP!
I should be called Crab Roll
Okay, now that would have been good
Oh, its Crab toss? I thought its Crap toss, har har har.
Game Designer
Originally I was calling it the Karka Bowl, because I first conceived the game’s core concept to be about dodging rolling karka. In fact, I further thought that points would only be awarded by causing other players to meet their untimely demise by tossing the crab to them at the just right (wrong) moment. In that regard Crab Toss makes a lot of sense. But a few experiments and iterations later, it evolved into the keep-away type game it is today with a few core elements. But Crab Toss is still very appropriate, considering the game begins with the referee tossing the crab into the arena.
Major thanks goes out to Peter Fries and Scott McGough for coming up with the term Crab Toss as well the most excellent title in game: Crabgrabber, which I will wear forever.
like american football…. where is the foot part? lol

I don’t know about most excellent; Yakslapper definitely gives it a run for its money.

You just don’t know how to toss it properly. Knock someone out by throwing it at them then steal it as they get back up.

I think you can kick the football in the start, scoring a goal.

Oh dear… The Far Shiverpeaks Yakslappers and the Southsun Crabgrabbers sound like pretty good sports teams.

It’s called football because plays are measured in “downs” which describe the distance which your team must advance the ball within a specific number of plays. This distance is calculated in American standard measurements of Yards, Feet and Inches.
Hence, it’s called football because the point of the game is to move the ball a specific number of feet within a limited amount of attempts, or prevent the other team from doing so.

I will always call it “Keg Toss”, because the burly norn you talk to when entering the mini game says “Wanna learn about Keg Tossing?” So that’s what the minigame is called in my head. :P

I thought it was called Crab Toss because of the NPC throwing the crab into the arena. :i
