Q:
I apologize if I missed it; will players be up-leveled for this new content? I’m getting questions already, so thought I’d pass them on to see if we could get an official answer (or a link to one).
Thanks!
Edit: Thanks for the answer, Robert!

yeah, you’ll get scaled up to level 80 for the duration of the story.
I doubt they are going to make Southsun up level you to 80, but I guess anything is possible.

It up-levelled everyone during “The Lost Shores” event so I would guess they would do it for this one too. No doubt they will remove the up-levelling again after the event ends.

Quite different though.
This seems to be part of the Living Story, so will most likely stay for quite some time, while the Lost Shores event only lasted a few days.

Yeah because of the free weekend.
Umm. I dont think so. The Lost Shores event was one time world event and that was the main reason they up-leveled characters, but this is second episode of Flame and Frost event and will stay fro some months.
For the past living-world events, the majority of the events took place in the 1-15 zones so that all players could participate. My guess would be that players will be leveled up since Southsun is a level 80 zone. If they didn’t, then a lot of players would not be able to take part in it. Only makes sense.
I think they will be for the weekend or how long the main event will last.
My guess is that they will have an instance/dungeon that will level up players for most/all living story specific activities but the island itself will remain an lvl 80 zone.
It is possible that they level everybody up to 80, but it is also possible that they make the map a 1-80 zone – free for all to go, and possibly safe for low level players in villages/camps/outer islands, but with level 80 mobs on the main land.
This way low level characters could take part in group events, NPC activity, gain access to a dungeon, etc. while the better part of the map would still be level 80.

If the only difference is the amount of time the content will be around then it’s not really all that different at all.
The reason for up-levelling everyone during the Lost Shores was to ensure everyone, not just level 80s, could take part in that time limited content. It’s how they work, they up-level people, they did it in the Molten Facility dungeon, in Halloween, in Wintersday and in WvW.
It’s established practice at this stage, I would be amazed if they don’t do it here.

And yet that would make one of the few (there are currently only 2) pure level 80 areas a level 2-80 area, and for all we know the living story arc will stay for MONTHS which would completely remove Southsun from the “end-game”.
One of the main issues would be that there is a guaranteed spot for Orichalcum which could quite easily be abused if every single player could take all their alts and park it at that spot.
There will most likely also be permanent additions to the area, so when will it go back to be a real “end-game” area?

It’s hardly much of an end-game area as it stands, there’s only six or seven basic events there, but it would go back to being a level 80 zone when the event ends.
Besides isn’t it ArenaNets stated intention that the entire world is as much end-game as these zones. Jealously guarding these zones as if they belong to level 80s and must be protected is unnecessarily confrontational and makes no sense.

All their level 60+ alts you mean? After all, an Orichalcum Mining Pick requires a level 60 character to use. Unless they’ve bought Molten Mining Picks for all their alts but even if they have it’s not much of an issue as the Champion Karka does a pretty good job of defending that spot against low level characters.
Finally, there’s a simple solution, they can remove the node for any character that isn’t level 80. They might be removing it anyway.
living story is limited time as well last i heard i could be wrong.

the solution for your quite valid complaint would be to make the living story ‘version’ an instance. just as you entered an instance for several bits of the flame and frost story. But I for one am curious as well how they will handle this. It seems somewhat unlikely they will run a living story arc that ‘requires’ you to be 80 to participate without up-leveling.
Just wondering, I don’t get the chance to play much so I’m only level 46.
Thanks
god i hope not . im sick of feeling like a lvl 2 is on par with us lvl 80s, we want to stand out kitten!!
I think they might scale you to 80, not 100% sure though. They did that with the karka event.
Judging by past events, I imagine any instanced content will scale you up to 80. As for the rest, it depends. If there’s stuff that only happens there, being an 80 zone, I imagine they’ll just turn on scaling for the whole area. If all but the instances can be completed elsewhere (like all those sonic periscopes) and the instances aren’t hard to reach, then I guess they might not, but I expect it’ll probably happen. They’ve done it before so it’s not like the ability isn’t there.

Could someone that actually knows answer this question?

Well, the devs do.
As Felivastus said above me: so far all events were accessible to all players, everything scaled players up.
I’m 99% sure this will go so as well. Still, karkas are tough:)
I’m also hoping that the content will up level folks, we’ve been getting friends interested in the game, and while we’re 80, they’re not. I don’t mind battling karka to bodyguard them so they can enjoy the content, but up leveling would make that job a bit easier.
I agree with most that have responded; I think it’s extremely likely we’ll see up-leveling where it matters. It would’ve been nice to get some official confirmation, but at least we only have another day to wait. I’m excited to see what the next area brings.
yeah, you’ll get scaled up to level 80 for the duration of the story.
What is the point of leveling a toon to 80 in this game than ? if you’ll get upleveled to 80 anyway !!!

A true level 80 performs multiple times better than an upscaled. Gear, traits and experience.

Well duh, that ^^ is common knowledge.
I’m asking more along the lines of when are we gonna see a new true lv80 zone that doesn’t upscale anyone ?

Why do you want to? To feel “special” in some way because others are excluded?
Besides, you already have Orr and had Southsun before and after this event.

Seriously. Maybe Anet should start banning level 80s from lower level areas to enshrine the pure low level experience. Makes as much sense.
For the record, I’m all for new content though. I just don’t see why all new content for MMOs needs to be top end content. I’m glad Anet feels the same way.
Even though I have a level 80 character I’m glad they’re going to up-level people. It makes sense for permanent content to be restricted by level to give a sense of progression and it’s not an issue because that content isn’t going anywhere, everyone will get to experience it sooner or later.
But with limited time content it would be unfair because anyone who isn’t level 80 will miss out on it completely.
This way everyones gets to join in. But at the same time I did Lost Shores as an up-levelled 40-something and then went back after hitting level 80 and it does make a big difference. The content is doable, as long as you’re in a big group, but level 80’s will still have the edge.
I hope they never remove the upleveling. It helps not only lower leveled players enjoy the game, but also lower leveled alts that folks have.
Besides even if you are a level 20 playing as an 80 you haven’t had the experience with skills to really play like an 80 at times with some professions. To echo what the others said, true level 80s still have some advantage.
I agree it should be upscaled for the event. Then I’m sure they will remove the upscaling after the living story moves on to other areas and Southsun will be a lvl 80 zone again. I mean they upscaled it for the original event too so I don’t see why it wouldn’t be repeatable.
