Yeah she announces all but one, then blows that one up and kills folks in the process.
Almost like the others were a feint for the big one. Actually that’s decent planning when you think about it.

A shame she killed no one important and somehow forgot that the Queen was a Mesmer.

You might want to just disconnect that thought of story heroes actually biting a bullet.
Once you do that it makes stories like these easier to enjoy.

I hope they bring in more of these types of “dynamic” movies. There is one moment there, that I thought was so cool/funny that it’s still stuck in my head. (Without spoiling to much.)

However . . .

What should be done is some way of finding things out without getting it from the horse’s mouth, so to speak. Other people, clues, journals . . . sure, they might not be entirely accurate (“She graduated from all three colleges! No way was that a clerical error or a database hack.”) . . .

Agreed, and from the coy comments from Dev Stein above, I have a sneaking suspicion we’ll see something along those lines. We’ll just see how well they execute :-).

She loudly announces the fact that she has bombs in Divinity’s Reach during her attack. A smart terrorist wouldn’t say that.

You’ve never heard of a call-in bomb threat? Announcing you have the capability for destruction is a time-honored terror tactic. Regardless of to what degree the actual bombs (if any) succeed is usually secondary to the main goal that you made someone do what you want them to do. Namely, react to you.

Quite obviously if she wanted to destroy Divinity’s Reach, she’s quite capable. The entire watchknight militia could have been activated without a peep, coupled with hidden bombs, and underground destruction from Molten Alliance. The entire city could have been reduced to a charnel house in a day. It wasn’t, thus that isn’t her immediate goal. What that goal is remains to be seen, and as noted, we’ll see how ANet executes on the rest of the story.

I have heard of bomb threats, but if you want to maximize casualties, I don’t think one would state their intentions so blatantly.

No, it’s to maximize chaos and disorientation, and force a reaction rather than action. Probably to delay them from figuring out she’s warded off the Crown Pavillion until she was done doing so. Or it was to make Logan and Anise look like idiots.

On another note, I’m not convinced those first four bombs were actually real. They burned a good long time while I patiently took out Twisted Watchworks, rather than the fifth which went off almost immediately after she announced it.

And finally, I’m relatively sure she may not have been aware of the mesmer clone trick, but if she was and this was a planned thing? She wouldn’t have abandoned the plan she had been working on. She’d let it ride out as intended and alter her expected outcome, going for THAT goal another time when she wasn’t trying to play to the other side’s tune.

Scarlet very much is a case of “keep them reacting rather than acting or thinking” based on what we see. From what I gather the downfall of her “Playhouse” is due to her not anticipating people the likeliness of a split effort. Or the fact the zerg exists to handle her invasions

The thing that kitten es me off the most about her is that she isn’t a personal nemesis at all.
Maybe I misunderstood this, but when I read personal nemesis I think superman-lex luthor; batman-joker; link-ganondorf etc.
Yet she doesn’t even know that I exist. Why shoul I care about her?
Sure, she is a threat to all races of Tyria, nobody said she will stop at humans, but the dragons are also and I don’t think that Zhaitan was my personal nemesis, he didn’t even know that I exist. Actually Zhaitan was more personal than her, he killed your “friends” etc.

Link’s personal nemesis is not Ganondorf. It’s Navi.

Ahh, well that was an unfortunate and silly thing to promise. Though if that’s precisely what they said, it might be worthwhile to parse that in the way one might analyze the promises of a genie… or a dragon ;-). Perhaps they become less frequent once this chapter is done. Perhaps they are gone completely after the next chapter. I dunno. I’d hate to see them become 100% permanent, unless there’s an exceedingly good reason for that to be the case.

…I think we still have much to find out rather than “we know all we will ever find out”.

There is a lot more to come. The Living World story is paced very differently than other content in the game, partially due to the nature of how we build and release it. I won’t spoil anything other than say that we’ll reveal more in time.

Please hurry up and reveal it already, so i can put this game that had so much potential behind me….. Another poster mentioned in another thread…. unless there is a mursaat in disguise somewhere behind all of this…… this entire plot line has been a complete disaster. Your living story concept has turned me from a hardcore, avid player, into “tune in for a couple of days” every two weeks type player to finish off whatever silly achievement grind you have for us this time ( that a hardcore player like myself will just plow through).

Either way, the core gw2 product had the potential to be the greatest MMO ever made, but has become a sad joke. I feel no connection towards the NPCs, I do not care what Scarlet does to tyria, I dont even care if Scarlet lives or dies. With zhaitan, atleast i sensed the danger as i traveled further south… seeing the corruption of undeath growing more gruesome and appalling, until finally I hit Orr. With Scarlet, all i think is…. meh.

Get a better, more compelling narrative, with NPC’s that grip me…. and maybe ill be back for more than one day every two weeks. Until then, cya later.

Assuming she’s a recurring character, I’m not too hung up on the personal nemesis thing. That rivalry has to start somewhere, right? This is that start. Granted, she could have been better introduced.

What I’m more interested in is seeing how well Anet can evolve the relationship. Not holding my breath on this one, but I’ll at least give it some time to play out.

Don’t like Kormir? Here’s Trahearne!
Don’t like Zhaitan? Here’s Scarlet!

Still, IMO she is better than Zhaitan. Considering the amount of resources each of them have, Scarlet have caused far more damage then than lol-dragon. Not to mention she actually has some personality compared to Zhaitan(only Gaheron managed to be more flat than Zhaitan, that means something).

It’s troubling that the intelligence arm of the pact didn’t see any of this coming. You’d think they’d take great interest in a genius sylvari, find out she’s crazy, and then maybe keep an eye on her.

It just strikes me that the game has decided it doesn’t need to even attempt to take itself seriously. Goofy content (8-bit dungeons, drinking games, moa racing, jumping puzzles, stuffed animal backpacks, slapstick badguys, legendaries like Dreamer and Moot) dominates the feel of the game.

It’s difficult to create any content that makes you care about it at all when everything is awash in a sea of carnival games and rewards. Can it be fun? Of course. It may even be a majority of the population that prefers goofy and silly to an attempt at seriousness. If I can get my head out of the expectations I had for this game, expectations put in place by Guild Wars 1, I’m sure I’ll find plenty of fun here while I look for something compelling to move on to in the future.

Please, don’t give them ideas…

No sooner had Snaff breathed his last than his carefully laid contingency plans went into effect! Specially-constructed bio-retrieval golems gathered up his remains and whisked them away toward a secret laboratory, where, if all had gone as it was meant to, he would have been reborn in a healthy (and young! as in, hellooooo, Zojja!) new clone body, complete with all the memories up to the moment of his last ‘saved consciousness state’ intact. Alas! En route the golems ran afoul of a steam creature and in the ensuing battle Snaff’s remains and the organic components of the steam creature were inseparably intermingled, with the result that instead of being reborn in a healthy (and young! as in, hellooooo, Zojja!) new body, Snaff was instead reconstituted as a steam-powered asuranoid cyborg with all of Snaff’s genius – enhanced by steam power! – but none of his asuranity. He decided that Zojja could never love a monstrosity such as he had become, and so he promptly took control of all the steam creatures in Tyria (and elsewhere!) and set about to avenge himself upon those who he determined were responsible for his untimely demise – the members of Destiny’s Edge! Starting with the cowardly bookah, Logan ‘Whackeray’, who had abandoned him, who had brought about not only his doom but the utter destruction of all his dreams, all because of a girl…

Prophecies was roller-coaster of writing shenanigans.
-> Help our people! Get kicked out (betrayed) by your king!
-> Follow your Prince! He dies…
-> Seek help from powerful nation! Turns out they are madmen, they betray you!
-> Try to escape. Bet you thought you were safe! Betrayed by comrade.
-> Run to seek help from powerful Vizier! He’s not evil or anything….
-> Run to seek help from powerful dragon! Ha jokes on you, she planned this all out!
-> Defeat evil… unleash even worse evil upon the land. That Vizier? Nah he was evil and he betrays you.
-> Defeat the evil and seal up the Vizier! Ahh… job finally done.

Why didn’t we just turn over the Vizier, to the Mursaat, so that they could use him to seal the gates forever… and then killed the Mursaat ourselves? Why did I unleash eldritch abominations across all the world?

I actually sort of liked Scarlet by comparison to that mess, or the terrible Nightfall story and “earned” godhood of a certain NPC. Scarlet was better introduced that the nonsense above, what I don’t like is her seemingly infinite resources.

More like . . .

1 – Help your people fight the Charr? Realize it’s hopeless to win by feats of arms and try to get some safe with the Prince since Ascalon has fallen.
2 – Try to cross the mountains? Crazy isolationist faction and civil war keeping you from getting through. Prince dies to make sure his people get safe.
3 – Reached Kryta to negotiate for a plot of land? Joke’s on you, there’s no ruler here anymore except for some cultists who deny the gods exist aside from their own. Like this won’t be a problem.
4 – Try to help out against that rebellion problem? Joke’s still going, they’re the good guys and now you’re wanted outlaws with them.
5 – Run straight to the last survivor who escaped Orr, who knows something to help you with? He strands you in the desert telling you to seek Ascension.
6 – Ascend and discover the Mursaat are looking for you to keep the Flameseeker Prophecies from coming true. Oh, and you meet a dragon prophet who sends you back to the dwarves. Because why not.
7 – Mursaat, White Mantle, Stone Summit, sure, why not, let’s just kill them all and go to the Ring of Fire since Vizier Khilbron says that’s our next goal. Because his trip to the desert was so lovely, we should do it again on an active volcano chain.
8 – Discover absolutely everything you had been doing was just to get the Scepter to the Gate of Komalie so Vizier Khilbron can send the titans to go mess stuff up. Why is he doing this? Because shut up.
9 – Seal the Vizier’s undead soul in the Bloodstone. Strangely somehow this doesn’t destroy him like we were led to believe but he’s still alive and sitting around with some guy named Shiro (who needs a haircut) talking about how awesome it will be to go mess things up again.
10 – Figure out the titans still aren’t done, and go root them out. This involves seeing King Crazypants not even remotely remorseless for throwing out his only son and heir, making the charr a joke, and possibly contributing to the whole “North Kryta Province is a terrible place to live” thing.
11 – You know those Stone Summit crazies? Yeah, the dwarves with the spiky shoulderpads. They’ve got something they’re doing in Grenth’s Footprint, and despite not having any reason whatsoever to go to work on that problem we’re being expected to take care of that mess. Also, Kilroy Stonekin.

Given that the Inquest are working with the Aetherblades (and her, by extension) it’s possible that they arranged for her to be able to attend and graduate all 3 colleges. That’s only speculation though, otherwise my suspension of disbelief is utterly broken.

She’s not ugly, but not pretty either..Her voice is good, but her personality is rather shallow. “Hey, let’s kill everyone! Oh, by the way, the Pavilion’s mine now! Hahahaha!”

The only thing left is me puzzling just how she came to be. Was she a Nightmare courtier who decided to seek more knowledge from the Inquest during their attempts to cooperate in the Brisban Wildlands? Is she a Soundless who decided to completely shun the Dream in favor of her twisted fun?

Or could she not be from the Pale Tree we know of? There’s at least another one out there..what if the Inquest have found it first? She does seem to have a distinct look from other Sylvari, and seems rather young, even by Sylvari standards.

Still, just speculation. We’ll have to wait and see.

She isn’t from the pale tree. I believe that was mentioned in the story instance, but I might be mistaken, correct me if I’m wrong on that.

If that is the case I don’t see how this would make any sense as she would have had to have graduated from those colleges in less than a year (while simultaneously being the mastermind of some of the living story plots) because it came as a surprise when a sylvari from another tree was found in one of the sylvari personal stories.

Well, is anyone going to mention Inquest cronies on the Rata Sum Council, who you brush up against in the Personal Story? I mean, asura politics is even more crazy than the stuff going on in Divinity’s Reach.

I could subscribe to the idea of her “graduating” due to handing over to the Inquest some of her tech . . . which was then sold to the Aetherblades, who she had gathered under Mai Trin . . . and then Ellen Kiel’s investigation shut the Inquest out from it but Scarlet was already done with that noise.

As for her origins? I refuse to speculate on other trees or Nightmare Court connections since we have had standard sylvari go crazy before. (Canach, Owain . . . Tegwen I think her name was . . . )

Yeah, I was just pointing out how it seems unlikely that she is from another tree unless some very weird retconning was going on due to the novelty of the concept. She doesn’t seem like Nightmare Court as she doesn’t seem to care about the Pale Tree at all. The attacks so far have been directed against norn, charr and humans. Hardly seems like a way to combat the tablet.

Edit: and when is Anet going to get Owain some help? They’re putting in a Hobo-tron arc, we need an Owain arc. (and Tegwen potentially dead isn’t nuts but she does have a rather happy sidekick in Carys)

I don’t know if the Nightmare Court necessarily has to be focused solely on the Pale Tree. In Twilight Arbor it seems they’re WAY too focused on each other and scrambling to cause the most pain possible.

The Nightmare Court exists to free the sylvari from the tablet (because someone had mommy issues and Caithe was being sort of a jerk) by corrupting the dream with nightmare. It would be like if the human separatists attack the asura and sylvari to try to overthrow the queen.

Here’s a little fun thing. If you add several nonsensical words to Scarlet’s name, she will sound like a character straight out of “My Immortal”.

. . . except I could see how that would work.

“Queen Jennah, since you can’t seem to keep control of your people, we’re going to do it for you. These are our new Golems and they should do the job fantastically. Also, anyone over three feet tall is subject to random stops, searches, and possibly imprisonment if anything incriminating is found on them. Because we asura are much more civilized about this, I expect this will be all for the best.”

Okay, she could be trying to influence the dream by creating chaos everywhere. This is a much less direct approach than the Nightmare Court has taken before (mostly because most of them are so emotionally screwed up that they can’t think straight). So I wouldn’t be surprised if Scarlet did fall to nightmare at some point but I would be surprised if Scarlet is backed by Faolain.

If Scarlet’s supposed to be the Joker, does this mean Countess Anise is her Batman?

… Which means Logan = Robin? ._.

She loudly announces the fact that she has bombs in Divinity’s Reach during her attack. A smart terrorist wouldn’t say that.

The goal of terrorism is fear, not casualties.
