Watch Knights -> Twisted -> Steam Creatures
I’ve considered it. The twisted seem to be the missing link, the product of golemancy and necromancy. They seem to be built with the idea of making more of themselves out of dead allies. The step to building more out of dead creatures is close at hand.
Has any one made this link yet?
Is this how Steam creatures evolved into what they are in the future?
I was thinking about how these new lifelike metallic creatures are similar to the already-in-the-world steam creatures.
- Spoilers
Since the steam creatures are from a possible future and created by the Grand High Sovereign, maybe Scarlet’s work is what the Grand High Sovereign uses to create the steam creatures. - End Spoilers
Though, I have to say, the steam creatures look like they took a step backwards when compared to the new creatures introduced with this latest patch.
So maybe they’re two distinct ideas or maybe in some alternate reality the Grand High Sovereign is in Scarlet’s place and due to the nature of the portals, one was tampered with to become a one-way time portal, ala The Terminator, which is how the Grand High Sovereign came back in time. Perhaps to help Scarlet take over the world…

The Steam Creatures do not look more advanced than the Watchknights. In fact, I’d said say they look more primitive. They all seem to have very obvious pipes for venting steam, and clear engines. Where as the Watchknights seem more refined, without obvious propulsion systems. Also, I have not seen any of the steam creatures transform into other beings, like the Watchknights. Nor seen them reassemble themselves automatically.

Steam Creatures are created by PC Asura characters with the Infinity Ball choice. They come from the future of an alternate dimension.
Twisted are modified Watchknights, whose creator is not revealed. It is most likely a Human creation as it is in the shape and form of a human and also Clockwork (human technology).
Because Scarlet has access to Steam Creatures and Twisted, either she’s been interacting with an alternate future dimension or she is from an alternate future dimension. This would also make it clear as to where she is getting her Twisted army from. Keep in mind, however, that the Twisted portal’s magic is quite different than that of the Steam Creature portals.
If Vorpp is the creator of the Watchknights (which I have a hunch about), then he could have potentially created Twisted in an alternate dimension and Scarlet had somehow been able to contact both him and the future universe Asura PC to gather the armies fighting us.
The Aetherblade and Molten Alliance armies are still there (we only took down their Champion’s/Scarlet’s Lieutenant’s) and are from our dimension.
Note: PC = Player Character.

I would like to point out that while the dark, alternate future PC Asura character with the Infinity Ball choice _does_ send back steam creatures, that doesn't mean that this character _created_ them, or is the only person involved in that creation process.
1) The player character decides to not become the dark version of themselves. Future averted, but the steam creatures still invade the shiverpeaks!
2) Shodd keeps working on the infinity ball tech (in the Asura home instance).
For all we know, this could be how the steam ceatures first came into being, and the Asura player character just sent them back through time in the infinity ball story line. The PC’s dark version may claim to have created them, but that isn’t necessarily true (and I don’t even remember the NPC explicitly stating as much).

The player created the Steam Creatures because they teamed up with Teyo instead of Zojja at the beginning of it all (Explosive Intellect, mayhaps).
The disaster wasn’t future Asura trying to convert past/present Asura. It was future Asura trying to control the world of past/present Asura since it’s not only the future, but it’s another reality.
The infinity ball itself has relatively nothing to do with the creation of Steam Creatures. It just helped create the rift through space and time.
Or maybe not:

Sorry I was wrong, it’s not Teyo that you follow. You listen to the dark side of well… yourself and Shodd.
It was A future, not THE future. In terms of quantum arcanics, we accessed other possibilities...but the connection was extremely unstable. - Asura PC
Zojja: Stop right there! Do not activate the Infinity Ball.
Shodd: Too late, Zojja. The process is already started. You can’t stop progress!
Zojja: Listen! My Dangerscope 5000 went critical when I tuned in you idiots. You’re going to kill us all.
Shodd: No, I’ll live forever- as a genius! Now shut up, and enjoy a glimpse of another reality!
Mysterious Stranger: Hello, Zojja. Recognize me? I’m the one you tried to bully into subservience and mediocrity.
Mysterious Stranger: But I left you behind, and achieved greatness: I am the Grand High Sovereign of my reality.
Zojja: Whatever you call yourself, you don’t belong here. And you can’t stay.
Mysterious Stranger: I can do anything I want. And here, as in my world, the only obstacle to my transcendence is you.
Mysterious Stranger: To become all that I am capable of becoming, you must die. It’s my destiny…and my pleasure.
Mysterious Stranger: Wait until you get to know my creations. In my reality, they conquered Tyria.
Mysterious Stranger: You don’t stand a chance. In your world, this technology hasn’t even been invented yet!
Mysterious Stranger: It’s time we took the field, Grand Vice Admiral Shodd. Just like the battle for Divinity’s Reach!
Shodd: Sovereign, eh? That does sound good. Hang on. What’s my role in this brand-new reality?
Grand Vice Admiral Shodd: You become Grand Vice-Admiral of the Conclave. If you live through this fight, that is.
Mysterious Stranger: Just so you know, killing myself is not something I enjoy. But it is necessary.
The Mysterious Stranger is the Asura PC.
Note in particular these lines:
Mysterious Stranger: Wait until you get to know my creations. In my reality, they conquered Tyria.
Just so you know, killing myself is not something I enjoy. But it is necessary.
With the first part, you can assume that it’s a future of the current reality where someone corrupted the minds of Shodd and Asura PC to convince them that Zojja is controlling and then they reach greatness by ignoring the governing rules of Asura. Key words, though: MY creations.
With the second part, you can tell that it’s not the current reality but a fragmented reality (assuming ours is the “real” reality) because if we killed ourselves, then how would we kill ourselves and that’s a philosophical debate for another day.
It’s interesting to note that they conquered Tyria, so that might mean that there is a much larger, stronger steam creature capable of defeating Elder Dragons.

Wasn’t there some asuran skill point that talked about the inevitable combination of necromancy and golemancy?

“Necromancy and golemancy have long been destined to collide. One deals with death, and the other, life. I’m on the verge of creating a new kind of golem that creates life from death.” – Oola
Please note that the Twisted are not Golems, but watchwork machinery.
I know what you’re saying, and like I said, I just played through this story line myself. However,
With the first part, you can assume that it’s a future of the current reality where someone corrupted the minds of Shodd and Asura PC to convince them that Zojja is controlling and then they reach greatness by ignoring the governing rules of Asura. Key words, though: MY creations.
It could mean that the PC created these exact ones we see on the screen, not the entire concept, or their potential predecessors. (In the same way that creating a particularly awesome golem doesn’t make me the first ever golemancer and parent to all golemancy.)
Secondly, it could be anything from an exaggeration / bold claim to an outright lie.
With the second part, you can tell that it’s not the current reality but a fragmented reality (assuming ours is the “real” reality) because if we killed ourselves, then how would we kill ourselves and that’s a philosophical debate for another day.
And nothing says that the steam creatures couldn’t have evolved in both “our” timeline and “theirs”, or that the timelines split after the initial creation of the first steam creatures.
It’s interesting to note that they conquered Tyria, so that might mean that there is a much larger, stronger steam creature capable of defeating Elder Dragons.
It could also just be a timeline in which our living story event ultimately failed and Scarlet won. We don’t know what the Asura (N)PC means by “conquered Tyria”, and that that would have to include the dragons is an assumption on your part.
~ Whips ~ City Minigames ~ City Jumping Puzzles ~
You guys/gals do realize that just because the Asura PC may or may not have created the steam creatures in the other possible reality that it doesn’t necessarily mean that the same thing must happen here for the steam creatures to exist in this reality, right?
I already stated that the dragons were an assumption. I selected my words very carefully for that part specifically for that reason.
Claiming, however, that an NPC were to lie with no reason (specifically in a Personal Storyline), is subject to disapproval similar to that of wearing a tin hat.
And, while I do see some reason in the predecessor of the Steam Creatures, they do not reproduce. They do not, also, repair their own.
The Twisted, on the other hand, are capable of using parts to create a specific other Twisted. (Horror creates Mender creates Reaver creates Turret that explodes.) Also if there are 2 Horror’s, it’s possible for them to merge and become a Veteran.
It could just be my misinterpreting your words, but I believe that the Steam Creatures were created by one person and simply worked upon after that.
It’s interesting to note the representations of these creatures.
Steam Creatures have:
Minotaurs.
Breeze Riders.
Ogre/Hulks.
Twisted have:
Breeze Riders.
Wasps.
Horrors (Necromancer horrors that explode on command)
Karka
Why do they both have Breeze Riders? The Twisted Breeze Riders look less like normal Breeze Riders and a little more like Eye of Zhaitans, but there’s still a striking resemblance to a Breeze Rider.
I’ve considered it. The twisted seem to be the missing link, the product of golemancy and necromancy. They seem to be built with the idea of making more of themselves out of dead allies. The step to building more out of dead creatures is close at hand.

Please note that the Twisted are not Golems, but watchwork machinery.
The dividing line between watchwork machinery and golemancy seems to be very indistinct, though. One is based more around magic, while the other is pure mechanism, from what I understand. However, there’s no reason that the two types couldn’t learn from each other. Throw in Oola’s determination that necromancy should be combined with golemancy and you could have the discovery of the Twisted and eventually the Steam Creatures.
Golems require a power source that originates from a living being. Typically, Asura get around this by using weak Elementals that seem to not have any sentience.
One of the things that makes the Inquest so horrible is that they use live Asura (and other beings) as power sources for Golems, possibly believing that it makes them stronger. It’s also a decent way to get rid of pesky naysayers, too, I guess.

I just watched a Wooden Potatoes Youtube vid that broke this scene down and discussed it rather well. He pointed out that the last saying about “Killing Myself” may actually mean the future version is talking about himself, and not the present time version of the Asura PC.
It was a good theory, and at the end of the day pointed to Shodd and the Asura PC coming through the rift to show Shodd what his potential is and to keep him working on the Infinity Ball.
He also broke down the Steam Creatures and where they are mostly found in Tyria. Mainly around the Thaumanova Reactor and also one other area in Blazeridge Steppes. Both are effected by the Thaumanova Reactor explosion and the subsequent portals it has created and sending confused monsters to those areas. The Steam Creatures being one of those monsters and the possibility that the portals are crossing time.
I love this theory and behind the scenes stuff.

Actually, there’s an odd amount of Steam Creatures in the Shiverpeaks area (with semi-active Steam Portals).
It seems like the creatures can only traverse to our land through chaos rifts, which we might see more of.
Bringing this back up, another, albeit questionable link pointing at twisted creatures being the in-between is that you apparently need to put 4 twisted creatures mini’s in the mystic forge to make a steam creature mini.
Random? I think not!
really? wow
