One thing that could help this whole issue, at least in part, is this:
As in WoW, EQ and other similar games, you could have multiple toons on the same account on different servers and regions. Why not here? Then at least folks could play in either region
The database is set up differently. On WoW, EVERYTHING YOU DID, save special items that were explicitly account-wide, were a per-toon basis. Achievements, gold, banks, mounts, friends lists, mailboxes, etc. etc. Here, though, the only thing you really keep that’s separate is your pockets contents.
They’d have to do a little re-working (and by a little I mean I don’t know how much) to make this feasible, as right now it’s set up so that everything is shared, which apparently requires every toon to be on the same server.
And this is where Anet fails badly! How im suppost to play with my guild wars buddies? Are you trying to break us apart? =(
I hope they will pull it off and make EU and NA guesting possible…
here you go.
Now everyone be quiet.

No, I don’t think so. I’d prefer to voice my discontent and my reasons for it, rather than accept an answer I’m not happy with. He stated their reasons, I’m not agreeing with their priorities. It’s not a technical impossibility, it’s a deliberate choice by ArenaNet.
I second this. The entire point why we been waiting for guesting was so we could play with some of our friends who are not exactly local. But now whats the point? I hope this is changed!
With guesting, your characters can play on any world where you have friends—with certain restrictions. For instance, you will not be able to participate in WvW while guesting.
Clearly states you’ll be able to play on any world you have friends on. The restrictions refer to certain features being unavailable (WvW), not that the worlds you can guest on will be restricted.
No, it does not state that clearly. The certain restrictions still pertain to the “any world” part of the statement. They gave an example of one of the restrictions, not all of them.
They should have stated it as another restriction, it doesn’t really hint at guesting not being available between regions. By using WvW as an example it implies the restrictions they are talking about relates to the content not on servers themselves. This should have been communicated much sooner.
I don’t have any friends that play this game who are overseas, but I have played games with friends from Europe and have had to pick server regions and it is not fun. Picking between who you want to play with is never fun, and I believe the spirit of the server share was so everyone could play with their friends without servers locking them in place. I know it’s probably very technically complicated, but I agree, we should be able to join our friends overseas.
Nexxon/10 quality features.
I remember GW1 used more than one server, pretty sure they were (and probably still are) in the same locations as the GW2 servers.
The least they could do is set up some kind of mid-way international server instead of wacking a coat of paint on the old joining overflow system, giving it some restrictions and calling it progress.
I don’t know why most of the players did not complain about that yet. After 23 pm it’s nearly impossible to get groups for dungeons. At the same time there are a lot of active US Servers… It’s just sad… You want to play, but you can’t. =/ Moving to an US Server is not an option – i want to play with my friends too!
I will also add complain.
Friends from another games are in US and on US servers.
How should we play now?
We can’t even do dungeons together.
Also as mentioned after some time most ppl are offline, and going for other servers would be really great.
EU/NA guesting would be nice, BRING BACK THE OLD GW1 SYSTEM FOR SERVERS
I dont understand why they cant do this. So many other big mmorpgs out there made it possible. How can they not have technology for that? and im sure they earn PLENTY of money from the gem store to make such a thing happen. Having to choose between my EU and american friends is terrible. Ive played with so many americans in gw1 and ive never been able to play with them in gw2. Its not exactly something that keeps players in the game xD quite upsetting. and now that the game has been out for over a year, you would think they would try to solve this. but nah. we just get more fancy armors and weapons in the gem shop. Very disappointed with Anet in this. feeling helpless. not gonna spend 1,800 every week/month to switch between servers.
Hm?
I have yet to see a single other big MMORPG that allows guesting at all.
The thing is you CAN play with friends on both servers, but it would cost some gems to transfer. (Whilst with most (all?) other MMORPGs you can only play with people on your own server, unless you pay (a higher cost) than here).
The issue is most likely that an account can’t exist on both Data-centers at the same time, hence why guesting can’t work.
I will continue to +1 this every time it is brought up. As has been stated many times, it would haev been possible to avoid different server vaults, or set them up in a way that allows for cross-vault guesting.
I didnt mean guesting @lordkrall. I meant the ability to have servers that can host both people from EU and america on the same “data center”. why cant they merge them ?? They should have made one “pool” of servers for peopel all over the world to choose from, instead of dividing it into american and european servers. Thats what you see in other games. I think this is something that a lot of players would want and it would really improve the game a lot.
One of my guildies who lives in the U.S. has a separate account on a European server so that she can play with her EU friends when she wants to.
I know it’s not the solution you guys are looking for, and agree that it’s a strange restriction here in the 21st century, but I didn’t see anyone else mentioning separate accounts in this thread so I thought I would point it out.
