An option to disable right click targeting
Please make an option that does this. As I’m rotating the camera, I lose the target. Now I know why

We need an option to disable right-click targeting, please!
I just want to say that this is NOT an issue of player style/preference. I am pretty confident that there are few to no players that make it their style to simultaneously move the camera and target something at the same time.

Nothing going to change. ANet doesn’t give a flying rats on what gamers are asking for.
Things like this are why no one takes GW2 PVE and PVP seriously. And this isn’t polemic. That they won’t prioritize and sort out basic combat usability features (particularly important for high-end encounters, you know, endgame, or tPVP) more than half a year after getting suggested is part of a larger trend.
I think even players who use a console-type controller are affected by this issue.
I was watching the video in this post and noticed that from the 0:57 to 1:00 mark, the player accidentally switched targets from Svanir to the Sword of Justice.
This may or may not be the same issue, especially given that they were using a controller, but it seems likely that it’s related.

Having right click targeting binded to the same key as mouse camera movement shows the lack of foresight that the devs had in the creation of this game.
A simple toggle or custom keybind would solve this easily.
I cannot believe that this hasn’t been addressed by A SINGLE DEV in over 6 months.
To most people affected by the issue it is a game breaking problem and it is easy to understand the level of frustration.

I never had much problem with this, and wondered a little about the huge number of responses. Then I got to work leveling up my Ranger…
Wow! All of a sudden my pet is running off (seemingly) on his own accord, though I’m sure I probably right-clicked a distant target while rotating my view. NOW I see what all the brouhaha is about. VERY frustrating and aggro-drawing.

Moves camera, presses RTL &…..hits a feckin` wall, because RMB has targetted a Raven that happened to be sat doing sod all nearby & camera turn decided to select it after I`d selected the player… :$

Incredible how this became a thread about how ANET is ignoring his players and simple and obvious game issues.
Our development team reviews play input on a regular basis. They are aware of this suggestion, but have not yet reached a decision on what changes, if any, they will make to targeting.
There is a lot going on right now with the upcoming event, but after that, the team will take a look at a lot of different game elements, and may make some changes in the future.
Sorry I don’t have more specific information, but you can be sure this is not being ignored or rejected without due consideration.
Thanks for understanding.
What does the developer team have as a reason not to make it optional, isent 1 key to select a target enough? Cant understand the logic of putting it in the game in the first place.
Imaging starcraft 2 if u could greenbox with left and rightlick and rightclick was also needed to be pushed down in order to move the camra…its mad that arena net havent fixed this yet. I ´ve been complaining since beta

So how about an update? SEVERAL events have come and gone.
Level with us; we’re all big kids here. Is there some issue that would make it unwise to remove right-click targeting? Was the program written so poorly that removal of right-click targeting will upset a million other things? Is it a basic, core function that will require a major rewrite of the fundamental code to remove?
We’re only asking for the OPTION to disable it. People who like it will be unaffected.

Wow I am utterly amazed.
This happened to me constantly at the start and I figured it was just a glitch.. Recently I noticed what the problem was.
A problem as old as the game is, yet a very simple one..
We are not asking for a re-work of the targeting system, simply an option to disable right click targeting.. we want to only target with left click..
I am no developer/scripter, but I am pretty certain this would not take very much time to fix.

I can only imagine some stubborn dev responsible for implementing right-click function with a strong opinion still thinks right-click-should-do-all-kind-of-stuffs is a perfect solution.
Right-click does:
- Select a target
- Interact with a targeted object
- Attack selected enemy
- Loot from nearest dead mob
- Pickup selected bundle
- Deselect target when targeting nothing
- Rotate the camera
- Open context-menu
- Works as an ‘F’ key on a selected game object
But in reality, it gives more harm than good, gameplay-wise:
- Prematurely activate an important-event-game-object (ie., fractal lava bucket) which makes the rest of the team go wtf! you noob! on you
- Stupidly run head straight to mobs with a skill when you just wanted to escape (ie., Ele’s Ride-The-Lightning away from enemy with Autotargetting set to OFF)
- Do stuffs you don’t intend to do (attack selected enemy, release target, target an ally, interact on an object, pick up useless object)
- Accidentally attack a distant enemy if it is already selected (if you are using a range weapon). Major annoyance when you are surveying the surroundings with right-click.
- Intermittently unintentionally target another npc/object which leads to wasted non-melee attacks if Auto-targetting is set to OFF. Major annoyance if you use range weapons a lot and your Autotargetting is set to OFF
And all that issues because all you just wanted is to rotate the camera properly.

We have not forgotten about this. Sometimes as certain features get used by more of the game, it reveals issues that lead to a redesign. For instance, now that you can right click on people in PvP while spectating to switch follow cameras, accidental right-clicks can be far more disorienting than selecting a new target.

Accidentally changing your point of view while spectating is significantly less detrimental to your game play experience than actually playing the game and losing your target because you’re attempting to use right-click to maintain battlefield awareness or turn quickly. Especially considering two of the most important aspects of playing MMO PvP are hot-keys and mouse-turning (thus the stereotypical jokes about ‘clickers’ and ’keyboard turners).
I see why this adds to the issue, but I don’t see why just now it has become apparent that a change will be necessary when a significantly more detrimental side-effect of this ‘feature’ has plagued players since launch.

Thanks for the response. Can we at least know why its still on a very low priority when right-click is one of the most (if not the most) feature used in game and this greatly affects each player skills in PVE, WvW, and sPVP?
Isn’t it easy just to implement a flag to ignore game object selection at settings since object selection are all already handled by left-click? Do we have to wait for an expansion or 2 years for a complete redesign just for a simple feature that will greatly help everyone? I mean I don’t want to say what you should or shouldn’t do but we, players, are already begging for this fix for 8 months now.
That kind of fix will greatly improve our own control with our character in terms of attacking, mobility, target precision, etc…

Evan, thanks for the response even if it might be a little too late.
Many people feel that this is a game breaking issue, including myself.
I hope you expedite this problem since many people, again, including myself are finding themselves playing less and less because of it.

The issue is not “accidental right-clicks.” The right-clicks are done on purpose to rotate the camera, something which is instinctive to virtually every gamer I’ve ever known. The ‘accident’ occurs when one’s target is deselected as the pointer passes over any clickable thing on the screen during the act of rotating the camera.
I appreciate Mr. Lesh coming on and offering a slim ray of hope, but come on, that was coded political speech. There’s something deeper going on here.

While I find it encouraging that sPvP has unintentionally “revealed issues that lead to a redesign” and I’m certainly grateful that you’ve finally responded to our concerns to some degree, I’m also in agreement with Dastion on this one. Since I get nauseous when I attempt spectator mode, I’ve never encountered the scenario you described, Mr. Lesh, but I experience all of these other complaints on a daily basis. A several-times-daily basis… And I only play for a couple of hours in the evening. To call it “frustrating” would be an understatement.
If you haven’t forgotten about this, then you’re aware of it and (presumably) what a problem it presents to a large number (if not percentage) of your players.
Despite our pleas, complaints, grumblings, occasional hopes, wishful thinking, and begging— eight (8) months of it, in fact!— it wasn’t revealed as an issue for redesign until that “feature” was used by more of the game. In this case, it wasn’t noteworthy until it was used by spectator mode.
Therefore, it would seem that spectator mode is far more important than the ability to target consistently. Is this an accurate assessment?

This post makes it sound like before spectating was added, this wasn’t an issue. Yes, if I were to spectate in PvP, right click targeting would rather problematic. But it is no less problematic or disorienting than as it has been in PvE since launch. Do you understand how many times people lose targets, switch targets, or preform an action that was not desired because of a bad design choice to have targeting and camera movement on the same button?
Having an option to turn off right click targeting is most certainly one of the most important fixes this game needs. It is ridiculous that a thread over 8 months old with hundreds of replies can only get two responses, one half a year from the other. Furthermore, both these responses don’t even address the issue. Rather, all we do is get responses saying that, “They are aware of this suggestion,” and it may be an issue “now that you can right click on people in PvP while spectating.”
Just posting to say that I am yet another person that has wished for an option to disable right-click targeting ever since the launch of this game.
1500 hours into the game and this is STILL one of the main reasons I avoid SPVP.
It can be frustrating enough in dungeons and wvw, I expect having a wireless mouse doesn’t help, but I’m not going to change hardware to accommodate for a bug.
Guys, you’re going to love this – apparently sometimes right click doesn’t target. Some PvP player cried about it, so they’re doing a hotfix to make sure that right click will always target.
Complete loss of faith. Even EA does better than this.
I bet they put in a toggle for it.
One can only hope.

I die occasionally in WvW and PvP because I right-clicked the wrong target on accident.
I was struggling to kill downed players before they could get ressed because I kept trying to right click them today, please change it back to the old system before the patch or give us an option to continue using right click targeting, it slows reaction time significantly in pvp when you have to tab target or left click then hit 1 to start autoattacking.
[oof] Crystal Desert
AItadis, left click starts auto-attack on it’s own, if you double click. If you can’t target the way that 99%+ of other computer games target, I’m really not sure what to tell you.
The point of this whole 12 page, 16k view thread is that targeting on right click should be either a) optional with a toggle box, or b) removed altogether.
I’d prefer a toggle – but now that at least sometimes it doesn’t target (which will make literally thousands of people happy) they’re promising to make sure it ALWAYS targets. As in, they are deliberately re-introducing a bugged mechanism, to be sure it stays bugged.
This is mind boggling.
(edited by stale.9785)
If this is true, and Mr. Lesh wasn’t being sarcastic, then the “something deeper” I alluded to in my previous post is coming to light.
If Anet, and Mr. Lesh, honestly thinks they can build a pay model out of sPvP by alienating a substantial portion of their overall player base, then I made a serious mistake by committing my time to this game, as well as purchasing $200 worth of gems. I suspect many have purchased far more and are equally disgusted. What other reason could there be for this bizarre ignorance of a fundamental game-play issue now revealed to be a focus on the trivial matter of spectating?
I began playing computer games in 1981 with Wizardry I. My first MMO was Ultima Online. I’ve dealt with bugs, design hardships, and bad business models through it all. Why? Because I love to play a good game.
The devs of WoW frequently gave real answers to real questions and that went a long way towards the sustainability of the subscription model. Real answers to real questions is apparently not something the devs of Anet embrace. Are you building a world that will last years or are you grabbing a pot of gold?
This is a frank insult Mr. Lesh. Shame on you. Shame on Arena Net. I am now embarrassed to have recommended, and purchased, this game for my friends and family.

Wow, a PvP spectating issue, really? I constantly find myself wondering why I’m not auto-shooting anymore on boss fights etc because of this feature. It’s not the biggest problem in the world but certainly one of the only remaining annoying bugs in this game. Please continue to be awesome in supporting the community and look at this.
Thanks for an otherwise awesome game!
Alex
Adding my voice to that of others to say:
“Please implement this Anet. This is a very bad problem for people who don’t use auto-targetting (which is a bad option). Please Anet. you are our only hope”
This problem is still present, and is IMO still the most pressing issue in the game right now. It makes multi-enemy fights absolutely horrendously annoying because you constantly target the wrong enemy mid-move.
Just hear to add my voice, we would love to be able to toggle this feature, why make the community suffer so a hand full of people spectating can have an easier ride?
I’ve been accidentally right clicking new targets in wvw for eons. I’ve since disabled autotarget and have more than once just resigned to ‘I don’t even know what I’m swinging at, but my team is winning so I don’t care.’
I specced into precision, so why am I always on the wrong target here?

Cheer up! Now it’ll take them just a few more years to fix it…
Adding my support to this. It makes wvw a nightmare trying to stay on my party’s target. I really see no reason why this was implemented in the first place. Please remove it or at least let us toggle it on or off so those that like it can still have it.

I would like to sign for this too because I think it’s an unnecessary inconvenience. I would also ask Anet to let us rebind everything else too as well as allow us the freedom to modify our UI in exactly the same manner as we could in Guild Wars: Prophecies, Guild Wars: Factions, and Guild Wars: Nightfall. Many thanks in advance!
