Buying commander with Badges of honor
As of now to become a commander you must buy some gems, exchange them for gold, and pay the 100 gold fee.
I think the minority of commanders bought gems and converted them to gold. 100 gold might seem a lot at first but it’s actually easily aquireable in a few weeks of CoF p1 farming.
I would rather they sold the WvW Commander Title with Badges as opposed to Gold to be honest.
I also think we should get 1 badge for every kill, and not for the JP, but that is because I am not a fan of allowing people to get Badge outside of earning them in combat.

I support this sentiment wholeheartedly.
Well what Could happen is that people would farm the JP in WvW to get the badges, but then again 10 Gifts of Battle might make a fair price maybe….and while we are on the subject:::: separate badges from the loot bags and have them go into the bottom of the inventory tab the same as Gold, Karma, or Laurels.

I think if we removed the badges from the JP, that would fix the farming/camping the JP problem, which is really just that, a problem.
I really like the idea of badges being like Laurels, Account wide, and we should get 1 for each kill and 10 for a WvW Map Completion.
This could really work.

Nice idea.
In the end, Commander title is needed only for WvW so why can’t buy it with WvW currency? It has sense.
PS: ONE BADGE PER KILL. Hate to do jps every day -.- Or at least increase drop chance of rare items from Mistwrought Chest.
Sure! But don’t allow JPs to give battles anymore. I think we should be able to buy commanders through badges solely. I’m a fervent WvW player when I have the time for it and atm I farmed 300 badges by doing nothing else than playing WvW (no JPs or whatsoever involved).
I disagree. Unless there was another option to put together large groups for PvE content/events. I paid my 100g so I could coordinate large group events outside of wvw. It’s mostly what I use my icon for.
I’m not opposed to making the commander icon purchasable with badges and/or with gold. I’m opposed to making it exclusively cost badges since not everyone only uses it for pvp.

or commander could be earned through the amount of kills through achievements (i.e 20,000 kills or 100g) that way the people that earned commander through achievements have obviously been around the block a few times to know what they are doing. and gives those good people who cant quite afford the 100g ( who may have other plans with their income atm) some hope of getting it.
P.S not saying there is nothing wrong with the ones who bought the icon because most are great, but u do get the odd 1 or 2 that thought “i wanna stand out in a crowed” FOLLOW ME NOW!!

I think a better currency would be influence. There are some possilble uses for a commander icon in PvE maps. Or maybe even a combination of influence and gold. Or as suggested by Rill, that you have both options, pay 100g or an equivalent of that in badges of honor.
Commander is not for WvW alone. Their ability to make and direct large groups of people is pretty useful in Orr, though sadly not used, and thus why every waypoint is always contested and the place is a ghost zone filled with bots…
Besides, it’s not that big of a deal. You don’t have to pay them any attention if you don’t want to.
So shines a good deed in a naughty world.

Just allow a FREE way for multiple groups to coordinate in GW2 and some people will stop using the commander pin. If you allow a way for 2-4 groups to coordinate like a squad (but without the pin visible to allies) it will reduce the “bad” commander pins.
Seriously lack of flexible grouping in gw2 atm and I hope they add stuff soon.
In theory, the Commander icon is used to lead groups of people. In practice, you don’t have to be good at leading to get one, you just have to be rich (or know how to collect spare change).
Collecting Badges of Honor doesn’t require anyone to be good at leading either — anyone sitting a top the right siege weapon during a zerg-vs-zerg is going to have plenty of those. Using influence isn’t much better: a poorly led guild that is big enough has so much excess influence right now that I doubt even upcoming features will make much of a dent.
Further, as pointed out by Ahmrill and others, there are reasons that groups might want PvE commanders.
So, instead, I’d like to see the game reward people who lead differently from those who follow. Instead of material rewards, I’d like to see leaders be able to earn tools that make it easier to lead progressively larger groups in progressively more complex tasks.
I’m not sure what those tools would look like or what the requirements would be, but I am sure that we won’t notice the difference if all ANet does is change the requirements from a lot of Currency A to a lot of Currency B.

PvE and also WvW. There are times our guild likes making a Havoc force. By that I mean 2-3 groups that get behind enemy lines causing trouble. We move fast, ambush and hit and run keeps and towers destroying wall siege or cutting of reinforcements.
It’s pretty tough trying to be stealthy and ambush with a commander pin. The extra 30 people flock to the pin, run all over the place killing mobs and gathering for dailies. So much for the element of surprise… lol.
Our guild gets the most enjoyment running havoc forces, not leading the whole zone. It what gives us enjoyment….. yet we have no way to coordinate in game for our private guild groups. We are stuck using 2-3 separate groups and coordinating in 3rd party Voice programs. There is no reason they couldn’t allow commanders to “hide” the pin AND still retain all the functions of a squad. Give us the tools and let the players decide what works best for them.
How about separating the WvW and PvE commanders?
A WvW commander only shows up in WvW and a PvE one only in PvE?
That way you could have WvW commander cost badges and the PvE commander cost laurels / gold / mossy mandibles / whatever.
Therefore I may take some time replying to you.

It’s not as much about WvW or PvE than it is about having a “Private” system for guild events. About having some control over the people in the squad or the number of people in the squad. Different group makeups and tactics for WvW just don’t work with 50 people. With the new changes to orange swords not showing with less than 25 players…. how do you control that?
There is no chance of creating a squad with less than 25 people when you have a big blue pin up inviting everyone in the zone to join you. You are forced to run with seperate groups trying to coordinate in 3rd party voice programs. That’s a sad option IMO.
Thank you all for you comments, I read and agree with them all. Anet needs to read this thread and see what they can do.
