As it is at the moment I don’t actually mind the chat system in general but there’s one issue that bug’s me to no end, and that is when you logout/character change or disconnect temporarily the chat tabs ALL reset to say
I’ve got separate tabs like in Guild Wars 1 for different chats and If possible I’d like the chat tabs to remember what they were previously on rather than resetting all the time to say.
I’m also curious if anyone else is annoyed or bugged by this?

Thanks Find & Seek.

I don’t switch characters very often…. (as in, never), so this hasn’t bugged me at all. But what DOES bug me is the chat system IN GENERAL.

The chat window is very cumbersome to work with. Let me just list some of the issues I have with it:

  • Opening all menu panels by acccident

Often you’ll try to type something, and you end up opening every panel possible on the screen by accident. This really is something to do with the way the prompt works. When I hit enter, I want to type something. And it doesn’t always work very well.

  • Whispering

What bugs me about whispering, is how it states both your name for when you whisper someone, and when someone whispers to you. It is very confusing.

“From Mad Queen Malafide”
“To Mad Queen Malafide”

Why did they do it in this way? When you are playing the game, and casually eyeing the bottom left corner of the screen, you always get confused if someone is talking to you, or if you were talking to them. Just have it say:

“Mad Queen Malafide:”
“Someone else:”

Much clearer! It was like this in GW1. Why did they change it?

  • Accessing chat channels

Switching to a different chat channel is also very uncomfortable. I can never just quickly select a different channel. I don’t know why this interface was made so user-unfriendly.

  • The bloody excessive message limit

This system is just broken beyond belief. Anyone just casually sending instructions in map chat, could find themselves blocked from saying anything for over an hour. Here is how it should work:

If you keep sending the same message after the same message, you can’t say anything for 1 minute. After that minute, you can chat again.

Here is how it works right now:

When you enter too many messages (regardless if they are the same message or not), you are barred from chatting for several minutes, and trying to say something then makes this period even longer. Thus the process of finding out if you can speak yet, becomes a never ending guessing game, where each failed guess prolongs your waiting period even further.

It is a system that is currently annoying people in WvW beyond belief. Commanders can’t even send strategic instructions to the rest of the players, because they are being blocked for an unknown amount of time.

This is related to the chat system; something that used to trip me up and I’m sure is quite confusing for newcomers still (I eventually got used to it).

Chat colours do not match colours of people and things on the maps. This is most confusing in WvW and PvP.

WvW/PvP:

In chat, red colour represents MY team (/team). /map is a different shade of red, but still can only be read by my own team.
In the environment, red colour represents ENEMY players.

Ontop of that, in WvW I might be on team red, team blue or team green, so the colour red on the map might represent my team or one of the two enemy teams. PvP is worse as my team colour changes from red to blue and back all the time.

So in the environment my own team is turquoise, in chat they’re either shade of red, and on the map my team is either red, blue or green, while “green” in some dialogues is actual green but on the map is turquoise.

I’m happy with chat channels using consistent colour coding in PvE, PvP and WvW, but I do wish the team colours were different (say, yellow/purple/orange).

Am I the only one bothered by this? twitches

This is completely wrong, your own name is never displayed when whispering, just how you have shown in this example, you are not talking to YOURSELF, the only messages displayed are FROM someone else and TO someone else, your own name never ever appears anywhere when whispering. If you wanted the system to work like your second example, then that would be really troublesome as you would never know who you are sending messages to. You would be sending whispers to a wrong person never ever having any indicators who the receiver would be. When you might look back in the chat history it would only display your name and you will need to manually remember who you sent it to, also remember not all whispers need replies to serve a purpose, so having a system where a reply is needed to fulfill communication is incomplete. To fix this it would have to look like this:

“Mad Queen Malafide whispers to Someone: …”
“Someone whispers to Mad Queen Malafide: …”

This would however be to long as it would fill out the entire rown and again make you confused at some point, the way it is set up now is the best way it can be, short with all of the information needed. One more thing, your own name does not need to be displayed anywhere in this closed 2 person communication line, if whispers are shown to you, then obviously you are the one of those 2 people.

I have never had that problem in GW1. I always knew who I was whispering to. What was important, was being able to follow the conversation, and being able to read back what was being said. And this is just very confusing in GW2.
