Idea:
Okay, so I love GW2 just like all of you guys. And I know that Anet has said that they may add guild halls in the future. Personally, I don’t understand how GW can be GUILD Wars if the guilds are one of the most neglected parts in the game. I love the missions, and it’s a step in the right direction for sure, however, I couldn’t believe that they excluded content like guild halls in the release.

I was thinking today about guild halls as I was destroying some Hylek houses in an event chain and watched them regenerate. And an idea struck me.

What if instead on a single guild hall…guilds had an entire homestead (a large plot of land). This homestead would start off as a small town with just resident NPC’s, but you could upgrade them with guild merits, influence, coin, and crafting materials (more on this later). This upgrade system would be similar to the WvW system for camps, towers, keeps, etc.

Research/Building/Upgrading:
You would “research” or “buy” an NPC, say a banker for influence, guild merits, coin, and materials (green logs for building & platinum for the vault). Then in the banker NPC would be “invited” to your homestead and set up (meaning that you town would now have a bank building). And every merchant, armor, weapon smith, etc., would add a new building to your homestead.

Now, the small town would grow eventually as you invite new NPC’s. But your grand town shouldn’t be made out of old thatch and wood…so there is an “upgrades” NPC. Maybe he’s called a contractor (Another NPC that you have to invite). He and his builders would upgrade your homesteads into nice and smooth stone and steel.

Location:
How does Anet make every guild that purchases a Guild Homestead aplot of land in the world? That’s easy, an instance basically. Just like how you race’s main city has a personal instance, maybe out in the Sea of Sorrows or south of Southsun, an island was discovered and guilds were invited to found towns on it. That’s not my decision. Anet makes the stores!

Getting There:
So, the question is how to get there? Easy answer. Just like everything else, and Asura gate. Those little guys can go anywhere! There would be a gate in Lion’s Arch (possibly). This gate when walked thru would take you to your guild’s Homestead. You could even take your friends from other guild’s along as long as they are in your party.

And if you don’t have a purchased Homestead for your guild, you go to a little area with a guild NPC from which you can buy a Homestead or go thru the gate again. An outpost on the island. This would be a public place like any other area (LA, Divinity’s Reach, etc.)

Events:
These Guild Homesteads could even have their own events take place in which the guild helps out. Maybe a house catches fire and guild members have to run buckets of water to the house in time before it burns. (event chain here) And if they fail, they would carry lumber to the house in another event to rebuild the house. Maybe you need to fend off a bandit attack or stop the local wildlife from eating the sheep.

In return for doing these “events”, there would be a stockpile building which stores items that the NPC’s make such as logs, ores, or foods maybe. And only guild members who are allowed to access it would be able to take these materials. Remember how I mentioned crafting materials would be needed to make buildings too? Well, you could also deposit materials into the stockpile to upgrade and build buildings with.

Conclusion:
In essence here, the guild is responsible for an independent town. This town would (slowly) gather crafting ingredients on its own – making it self sustaining. However, guild interaction is a must. If neglected, the event chains (fires, bandits, etc.) would destroy the Guild Homestead which would have to be rebuilt in other event chains. This encourages guild interaction and creates a nice guild community. Literally.

Obviously, this would involve some work on Anet’s part. So, I would imagine only one version or style would be released at first. However, like the different locations of Guild Halls in GW1, I would hope there would be different locations on the islands for the homesteads (forest, beach, valley, plains, etc.) This would help make a guild hall more unique.

Breakdown:
-Guild Homesteads
-Upgradable buildings
-Evolving town like the personal story instance
-On some new island
-Events in the instance
-Great way to get to know your guild mates and create a close guild.

Guild leaders should have the option to upgrade the Guild Hall in many ways. Some should be practical and influence the embers others should be purely aesthetic. Some ideas:

  • The Guild’s wall of trophies for each guild achievement, guild missions compleeted, etc.

Artisan Objects that influence players in various ways:

  • A Frost Shield hanged on walls: All players +5 Toughness while fighting in Snow maps.
  • Mystic Endless Torch: All players gain +% speed in nighttime
  • Golden Laurel: Completing a Monthly event gives +1 extra laurel.
  • Ancient Frog statue: +5% money gain when farming reptilian creatures.
  • Cartographer table: +2% Experience gain from visiting new way-points.
  • Commander’s office! A member overview room. Here a commander can see player stats, online time, how much each player contribute, etc. This way you can give responsibilities and titles to those who are most active. I think an experienced commander should also see what equipment their guild members are wearing and also their trait choice. This way he can advice the players on their builds and armor choices.

There are a lot more but I made my point so no need to fill 50 pages.

i like the idea, not the fact that playing there is a must because people would leave the world to take care of their town.
what if guild members can have their own house inside the guild homestead?
wouldn’t it be nice?

Well, personal houses as cool as that’d be, they weren’t part of the original idea

The point of the Homestead is that the guilds would have a place to call their own. The most powerful guilds on the server deserve to have something they can call their own, right?

Basically, it just gives guilds more things to do together and allows them to make something unique. It allows guilds to build something and be proud of.

I am totally pro for this idea Herschie, but one question: Where would they put it? Where would they have all these villages? I mean it has to make sense lore wise. Other than that, I would love to see Guild Halls implemented at last. Maybe then they will add GvG and Alliances.

As I said, similar to Southsun. Or any other location even in Tyria which does not have a developed area. Or even this, somewhere in the mists. I mean, WvW is in the mists after all. Huge castles and towers…why not simple Homesteads too.

And, every guild would use the same “portal” or entrance to the Homesteads. The Homesteads would be instances. This means that they would be like your personal instances in the personal story line.

Everyone can go in, but everyone in different guilds sees their own guild’s Homestead.

I like the mists idea. Anywhere near Southsun would make the Sea of Sorrows too cluttered. I would assume the portal would be in LA, or a button in your guild menu like in Gw. As I said, I like the idea.

Yes, a portal in LA probably. The button idea is a good one too. Just like the buttons for WvW.

I vote for an asura made blueish box that is bigger on the inside. We have seen it in the SAB. Another enterprising asura could appropriate that tech and use it to start up a lucrative business of creating customish gathering places for guilds, councils, peace treaties. Choose from 5 themed layouts and choose from 7 amazing color schemes. Enjoy you hall.

This is the best idea so far! I will really appreciate if ANet do something to make it happen. But I personally think that it would be better if everyone can see it or at least the people from your party. I can assume that this will make the game one of the best MMO’s till now Good Luck on the idea!

Instanced, customizable, upgradable, guild halls would be awesome. I’d love for them to somehow display certain achievements in the form of items added to the hall (guild members claim towers in wvw x number of times adds x item for display in guild hall). That’s probably asking too much, but it would give guilds something to work towards together as a group.

Eh. I wouldn’t say that. I agree there should be a GvG element in the game. By bit in your instance like invading per say. Maybe an arena is an option to build if you want GvG in the Homestead.

That is also a good idea for how to get to the instance. SAB after all is an asura invention. The asura are known to take things to the next level. Your Homestead wouldn’t even be real at all! Just like SAB. I actually love that. No need to create a new area for a Homestead.

I was really surprised when they dropped Guild Halls in GW2. They were so convenient when you were trying to meet up with your guild members, stopping for supplies, or just sightseeing. Seeing as how they improved everything else in this game, and made everything so much bigger and involving, this would be perfect! I would definitely join a guild if this became a factor. Right now I just really don’t see the point.

What I would love is to be able to have the choice out of the major hubs, such as DR, LA or Hoelbrak, for a guild hall.

I like the idea of a homestead, or perhaps an area like Garenhoff, where we could have our own ship too.

I’d hope architectural style would be selectable as well. Some guilds might want Sylvari trees or Norn mead halls or Asura labs …

I think of all the MMO’s I’ve played LotRO did the best guild areas. For those who haven’t seen it: A zoned area of each architectural style is set up. When you enter, you pick which iteration to join; it has a list of number of available houses inside. As the instances get sold out, more get opened. Individual guild members can each buy and decorate a home in the instance.

A guild can’t claim a whole instance, though, and I’d like to have that ability in GW2 so there’s no rush to grab houses before people are ready to buy. Also you have to keep paying game money on a periodic basis or you lose the house and all the decorations go to an escrow NPC. I -loathe- that. It doesn’t fit GW2, either, this game being made for long absences without penalty.

I guess I’m just pushing for the infinite instances that anyone can join if they know which id # to use to get in that one, with buildings with specific permissions the owner can set, and lots of choice of home style and location (up on a cliff, along a river, etc).

I would like to have different architecture as well. But I don’t think you should ask too much from Anet all at once. I would expect a single style at first with more releases at later dates.

However, individual homes are iffy. I’m not sure about that. This isn’t the Sims after all. We would need a balance.
