Make Skritt playable.
I’ve been thinking the same thing.
So yes please!

pleaaaase! i like shinies too!
jajaja this is so funny, so you want to play a brainless race, so funny they are intelligent only when there are a ton of them together, as an NPC race they are funny as a playable race not so much, I’d rather see the barbaric style Jotun or even the Kodan would also make a much better choice for a playable race in an expansion.

Even quaggans can do better than a skritt. LOL
But ok, more options better.
I think they will use tengu as next, and maybe kodan (they have changed their size… for what?)

I love the Skritt voices too!
I would make a Skritt any day over the creepy/disembodied Asura.
SKRITT I’M HIT!!!
Not my idea of a fun race to play, but dear god I love killin them >:D

I like the Asura’s way of looking down on people kind of mentality and the way they speak but they look to creepy for my taste
the silvary creep me out as well !
The norn are just over sized humans and they give the impression of moving slower than humans, and the females have to much muscle for my taste !
The charr are ugly and I hated them to much in GW1 to play one now as a character !
So yes all my character slots are filled with humans if I want to experience the other races story lines I’ll just join someone else’s.
Signed. I love Skritt. <3
Kind of a neat idea. Could also have a norn racial that turns them into a 50foot skritt beserker that dual wields broken bottles and uses foul language.
anyone else ever notice that the asura look like a cross between pumpkinhead and et?
But they are incredibly dumb and dull-witted when alone, which means having Skritt who venture out and explore the world on their own (Putting them into the current Hero situation) will result in a lot of very stupid Skritt running about.

Pretty much this. Skritt with human intelligence is a violation of lore.
I had an idea of playable Skritt race, where players are extremely limited in skills if they are soloing, but more skills unlocks when they’re playing together.
As much as I like skritt, a skritt adventurer makes no sense due to the communal intelligence thing.

Can you imagine the personal story, jajajajaja
ooh shiny….
you smell funny…
me don’t understand…..
you stupid skritt you killed the lionguard soldier instead of the risen undead
but but, the other one looked shinier so he must be the good guy it’s why I help him….
I like shiny’s……
Lets have playable skritt with a passive “Shiny!: Automatically run towards any shiny object or entity in close to your persona”
Now imagine going to Queensdale, Black Citadel… Heck imagine fighting the Flame Legion… Shiny!!!
Januk Monkeydoodle: 80 Engi
Knowledge is your friend: 1 of every class for sPvP except Ele.
tengu and kodan, most likely…sorry.
I would LOVE skritt, but they cannot be a playable race because the lore itself does not support it!
They are incredibly, incredibly stupid when left without a group so the only viable way to work on this would mean that they would need the personal story to have you be the leader of a large skritt group.
Which is a lot of work. Other than that, they would also have to find some way to explain why the player skritt can run around the world alone (in world) without losing intelligence.
From a cute standpoint, its great. from a lore standpoint it just isn’t doable…although I would LOVE to see them have plenty of silly inbuilt traits like as already been mentioned, running towards the shinys….
although, the guy above has a really interesting idea. Skritt with less ability and so on being alone but getting more stuff with groups of skritt would be great.
Maybe as a new class as well as a race?

You would need at least 3 skritt to count as a player. Not even a heroic skritt would count as a single player when alone.
Imagine, a thief skritt with dual daggers.
The armors pieces would be split between all of them, doing things like fashioning coats out of shoulder pieces and leggings, or helms out of gloves. And while one skritt uses one dagger, another uses the other, and a third brings the alt weapon and stays behind.
An skill animations would have to be made for all of them, like one pulling the others when dodging, or all of them grabbing a greatswordwhen performing a stronger attack, while only two of them would grab it for most attacks.
Imagine the warrior spinning gratsword attack: Two skritt grabbing a third by the feet, and the third grabs the sword, and there they go all three spinning.
No matter how cool it’ll look, the animations something like this would require would be insane. Insanely fun, insanely ridiculous, and insanely time-consuming.
And they’ll have to record quite some extra sets of voices, when the existing ones can’t be used with 3 other people, or a single skritt talking for the rest.

Oh this 3 makes 1 player none sense so reminds me of the race I’ve hated the most in any mmorpg, the stupid allods online Gibberlings! so freaking annoying !!!
Leave that crap out of the Guild Wars universe please !
Just my 2 cents…..!
This would be so great! i fell in love with the Skritt when i first heard the short conversation between the 2 NPCs in Lion’s Arch.
You know the one, the little Skritt guy is telling his female friend how he found a hole in the sewer grate, and he wants to live down there… lol
i loved that short dialog exchance.
ANet make Skritt playable. Do it now!

I like this idea! buuut i would like to keep my Skritt as a Single being. Maybe a new race could utilize the, 3 count as one player, concept…
maybe Quaggen.
/closing tab.
only ridiculous player race ideas in here.
Man, I would much rather be a Skritt. They are so cute!
Could always have a skill (maybe permanently skill 5 for any weapon set) be Summon Skritt Ally. Skritt is summoned for x time and provides +x% to all stats.
What about the Asura that is attempting to make them smarter? What if he were to finally succeed and we can play as them?
The Asura are not trying to make them smarter. They are studying the process that makes them smarter in groups.
No Skritt…They make for fun and dumb NPC’s but not as playable…
Now on the other hand Kodan would be absolutely boss to play with as a new race.
wouldn’t be surprised if the asura or at least a rogue asura scientists did some genetic experiments on skritts to make them smart even when alone, on par with humans maybe.. an easy solution for the soloing skritt hero :P
but yeah, a good skritt is a dumb one.
I love the skritt. Would definitely want to play one if it was an option.
Skritt personal story should be they go out to go find shiny. Someone stole their shiny and they blame dragon. Go on a quest with [you choose 1 of 3 society] to kill dragon and get shiny back.
I agree

Please NO! That would be equivalent to adding a playable race such as…Pandas.
I’d rather see a Tengu first…
I understand it wouldn’t be so easy to fit in the lore, but playing as a Skritt would be EPIC!! If it will never be possible, please, ANet, let at least Asuras use Skritts in their Elite skills! ^o^
Oh please not…
No more races… 5 are already too much in my opinion.
I really liked the “only human, different cultures”-Thing in GW1
I don’t want this game to end like WOW with 13 different races…
Just expand the existing ones in future updates…
I like the idea.
The female model could be really cool!
I also think that 5 races are enough ..Anyways . Why would you want to play with those rats ?
I can see dwarves returning from Gw1,but please no stupid races like rats,or quaggans, who dont even like to fight and would get a skill set like “OoOoOoOoOO -Cowar in fear for 30 seconds untill your enemy lost interest”
That would be awesome. _
I don’t understand why the player coudn’t play a stupid character.
The Skritt’s interest is in their stupidity. Some of the conversations between Skritt and Asura are priceless, that’s total nonsens, and sometime it looks like a british comedy’s conversation.
If a personnal quest have this type of dialog, i sign right now ^^
I’d like the Skritt and wouldn’t object but if I had a choice, I’d pick Kodan and Tengu.
I could see the lore for the Skritt being an issue unless a serum was developed/fount by the priory that fixes their intelligence.
“The lore doesn’t support Skritt adventuring on their own and playing as the hero!”
Well, see, that’s the great thing about lore: it can be whatever the creator wants it to be. If they want to introduce an Asuran-concocted serum that they give to exemplary Skritt to adventure alongside them for whatever reason, by golly, ANet can do that!
From a mechanical perspective, it wouldn’t be hard to do. From a story perspective, it could still work.
The racial sympathy storyline quests posit five races that one’s character can make friends with (at least a particular group) and each of them has tribes that tend to be friendly to all players anyway.
Grawl, Hylek, Ogre, Quaggan and Skritt.
Now, if one were to say that the Kodan, Tengu or even Krait would make better options than some of these as potential PC races, I wouldn’t disagree. And if one were to say it isn’t clear why Norns need to be a separate race from humans and the techno-midgets, plant-elves and psycho catmen with horns make one think that perhaps not having non-human races would have been a better option, I wouldn’t disagree anyway.
In that group of five there is the Ogre who seems to be simply too large to be workable (especially since doing platforming and crawling through tunnels seems a major part of the game) and the Quaggon’s whole concept is based on being hyper-pacifists which would make PC ones quite odd (though it might also make them particularly cool to play). Though, on the whole, I can’t see much problem with Grawl, Hylek or Skritt.
But, the races one can become sympathetic with seem like the best start the thought experiment at. Now— taking out the process of graphically creating them, I could see a pretty straight-forward method of adding them.
The PC race cities all seem larger and more sprawling than they absolutely need to be. So, you take those 5 races, choose a current race’s city to host a single tribe of each of them and players who choose to use that race would be a member of that particular tribe. This wouldn’t seem to be the least bit out-of-story as the current PC races do seem protective of those of these races they can manage to ally with. Furthermore, these tribes would be understandable more influenced by their hosts than others of their species allowing for them to adopt culturally different attitudes and mannerisms than most of their species. The storyline quest points would be the same as those of the host city’s race with some of the dialogue altered in order to emphasize the difference in race.
In terms of sales— well, selling the additional races for gems could be a way for the company to pick up extra cash through micro-transactions. I suspect that would be quite popular items— certainly far more so than anything else available right now. If a player has to complete the racial sympathy quest and then pay $10-20 to use the race… then loyal players might even use them as a status symbol.
But this all ignores the core problem— which is the armor modeling. See, in all games like this (and I suspect this one too) player models are made much different than enemy models. Because players can switch out different armor parts, PC race models are designed as several different interlocking pieces that can be switched out. NPC race and creature models are designed as single piece models.
More over, every different glove type in the game, every different boot, every mask or helm, every pants, every shirt— each and every one of these needs to be designed for each and every race. This means to make the race there needs to be (I would estimate) between 100-300 different armor pieces for each body part. I don’t know how much time a staff dedicated to doing the job would need to spend on it, but it would be a fairly massive undertaking. I don’t know if it would be worth it or not— again, I imagine they could sell it for even a third of the cost of the game itself and item would still be very popular.
Yo bring me something?
This race would be hard to implement and would work very different to the other races if they were to make this a playable race and follow the lore. The lore says that skritt are stupid on their own but smarter among other people since they can communicate rapidly in a way other races can’t comprehend. How would they implement that?
I’m not saying I don’t like the skritt. I love them. I love quaggans too. And hylek. But they are not good candidates for playable races. Tengu and Largos however, are.

@Cinder: I see where you’re coming from and it does make some sense. They turned the charr from the bad guys in gw1 to the good guys in gw2, so of course they could make them a playable race, but it would be a big challenge for them to keep the continuity in the lore and making it feel not contrived. I still don’t see how they would implement rapid communication part though.
Make the mouse people the next playable class. They rule.
only in large numbers. Individually however they are sharp as a marble . This is why they wouldent work as a playable race .
I would like to see Tengu as a playable race, skritt not so much.
It could theoretically work. You could give Skritt a passive that reduces the strength of their skills solo (to maybe 66-75% effectiveness) but increases their stats when more skritt are in the area (this would follow a logistic function, with increasing numbers of skritt providing a large initial boost and then diminishing returns). Skritt, with a large enough group, could get a 150-175% bonus to certain skills and stats.

the problem with this is that no other race has inherent advantages or disadvantages so from a design perspective it doesent work

Actually, I feel like if our players where to play Skritt, it would not be in violation of lore. I mean, have you seen some of the people in WvW? Some of them seem to have an opposite reaction to groups than Skritt. In zerg-mode, many seem to just stop thinking (if they were thinking at all beforehand).
(Please take this in the joking tone it was written in)
I don’t buy that lore should be seen as the major hurdle to implementing races as some believe.
So Skritt aren’t particularly individually intelligent in the ways that one would generally judge (although, given their universal ability to learn a language far different from their natural language and learn the general workings of other’s technology, their “lack of intelligence” might be overstated), however they are good at communicating with each other quickly (so their language can impart large amounts of information in a condensed manner— again, not so dumb)? Okay, fine. That is the typical Skritt for you.
On the other hand, over there by Rata Sum the Asura have been experimenting on the Skritt. They intend to make use of the Skritt. Say they have some success and gather a group of Skritt to help them carry out their tasks. Well, that’s your PC Skritt group right there— it explains why they start in Rata Sum, why their story quests seem to heavily involve the Asura and so forth.
Meanwhile, the Charr heavily influenced the Grawl centuries ago and on some Grawl that hold has never been relinquished. Sure, they don’t appear in the Black Citadel right now, but the NPCs walking around don’t represent every resident of the city. So while most Grawls are dangerous and tribal and don’t work well with others, the ones that serve the Charr are an exception to this generality and can be put to tasks by the Charr who have a history of intrusting tasks to the Grawl anyhow.
The same basic sort of rationals could work for any number of races one could include as options. Though I’d try to limit it to one extra per city. Its kind of the same thing World of Warcraft did with their Trolls and Gnomes. Not every race needs its own starting city and even if the majority of the members of the race in the world are enemies or neutral, one could still have a small group of a race that is an exception to the rule that utilizes the same starting zone and quests as another race.
I still say personally the Tengu have the highest potential of them all currently, as they were originally set up to be one.
I just can’t see the Skritt as playable, despite my like towards them.
No thank you! It would be cool to a point but here is the thing if there is a huge amount of skritt near each other they are smart as Einstein, but when they are apart they are as dumb as a rock.
The Skritt is cute and I would play them if they were available. They would though have to explain in the personal story how you are able to go out on your own and still maintain the same level of combat effectiveness. I don’t like the idea of making your character weaker/stronger based on how many Skritt are nearby. Because then either nobody would play as the Skritt or everyone would play as the Skritt.
