This was gonna be a really long text with some slighty frustrated tone, mixed with disappointment on how hard it is to make gold. Instead I will go straight to the point;
please increase drop rates, right now I feel t6 mats are an enormous gold/time sink for which I find no fun farming/spending money.
I dont mind spending money on the game since it is support it, but I would rather keep spending it on the pets and aesthetics than on 2 exotic staves which will be decimated on the mystic toilet. I would rather spend the little gold I make on items I want, rather than item that dont drop ever.
edit I have 7x% MF in between runes/trinkets, not counting the occasional omno bar . I dont have MF gear, I have zerker gear, the MF comes from the runes and the gems.

Agreed – the drop rate has decreased a lot over the past few weeks. I’ve noticed it in many ways, from the loot from farming to the salvage rate of ectos. Game becoming a bit of a boring grind.
It’s been horrible since after mid November. Trust me they nerfed drops into the ground since beta. The only things nerfed harder than the loot are rangers and engineers.
We aren’t supposed to be critical of the game though since there’s no sub and everything is wonderful and it’s the best mmo ever and has no trinity so we can all just be happy dps.
I only got the game in December and really didn’t give it much thought in the beginning as it was the first MMO I’d ever played. However, once I decided to start making a bit of money, the gain at first was awesome (for me anyway). Made my first 100g fairly easily once I figured out what I needed to do. However, now it feels like there is no end in sight – I’ve been level 80 for a couple of months, I’ve got 100% map and I have 400 in every crafting discipline. Now I’m really just looking to buy up some nice items to mess with but it just seems to be a total slog fest now to get anything decent.
I love the game a lot and have enjoyed it immensely, but now I’m just bored – an Exotic drop once every two weeks just isn’t doing it for me.

at least you are getting exotic drops.
I have only gotten only ONE rare drop on Orr in my entire gaming life……

To be honest I think you might be burned out on the game. You should play something else for a little bit to get a break.
I totally agree that the game economy and drops are horrible but from what I have seen it will only get worse the longer the game is out.
I can say that the mmos with subs are nothing like this as far as drops go and after this experience I prefer sub games for that reason.
I have 4 level 80’s and almost all the crafting professions leveled so trust me I know the drops are bad.

My recommendation for getting exotic drops is not using magic find gear but using zerker gear and running fotm with magic food. Always do the even numbers so you get the green boss thing. I forgot it’s name lol.
Magic gear doesn’t work in my opinion so avoid it.
I believe drops and quality are mostly based on damage numbers.

Misconception there, I do have zerker gear, including trinkets and all. The MF comes explicity from runes and gems.

Weird I have jatoro on 2 toons and yakkington’s on the other and neither show any effect at all unless magic find = porous bones.

I feel that MF might be bugged, it is the only explanation… because it makes no sense people with no MF the same (and sometimes more) than I do on a regular basis in Orr whn doing the same stuff, for the same amount

I feel your pain, same here. Even getting rares truly is “rare” for me these days. And trying to get crafting mats…forget it I might as well just start a shoe shining business in Rata Sum, I’d make more profit that way and could just buy my own mats off the TP lol
Correct me if I’m wrong but didn’t Anet once say that they didn’t want GW2 to be a grindfest. Yet I find myself grinding for crafting mats, even the small stuff hate to imagine going for the final tier stuff..
I think Anet does need to tweak drop rates. I don’t think they should go nuts, but this is definitely something I think they should look at.
Agree with OP 100% i’m tired of dead open world because very little can be gotten from it, no wonder world events are hammered 24/7..

Definitely not asking for them be raining from the sky but enough to not become boring. Its kinda like Diablo 3 atm, I love it when a legendary drops but it happens so little I get bored of waiting.
They did already so good luck with that… DR was a brick wall after release. Tbh the least they could do is not bind it account wide; thats just freaking stupid…
There are other ways to battle farming abuse then punishing the entire player base.
The worst thing is/was at some invisible cap you just get worse or nothing at all.
(and thats account wide not just one toon)
I’ve gotten more exotic drops this month (about 4-5) than the last 3 months. Bag drops in Orr were increased, but lazy people ran away because you can no longer afk farm everything. I run with 30% MF usually, and try to get to the major boss events when I can. I have 11 characters but generally only get to 1-2 bosses a day. On average I can make between 60-80+g a week farming for a few hours a day. Some part of that goes to making MF food, supporting my guilds influence, and spending on events I host very often on my server. About 5g actually gets used on something useful, the rest goes to events and whatnot. I don’t like holding onto my gold I guess :P But I also don’t give it away ^^
I think the average player should be able to make 1-5g/hr with a little effort. So if you play for say 2 hours a day and 5 days a week thats 10-50g a week. Seems pretty fair. (At 80 of course)
Players with more time to spare say 4 hours a day could be making 4-20g a day or 20-100g a week. Now increase loot drops for everyone, and you can see the dilemma.

Pre-November, open world drops were better than they are now. Back then, I didn’t do dungeons, I’d never killed a dragon, and yet I would see a rare just tooling around leveling my character. They didn’t rain from the sky.
Then the November patch came and it all went away. I and many others reported our findings in a huge thread. Many equipped MF gear above 100-150% to change the rate but it didn’t help.
It seemed that the only way to get any loot drops, either trash/rare, was to have a character that could kill mobs very fast or be in a group that concentrated on the same mobs. The dev’s finally answered us declaring there was a problem with kill credit. Since that patch the drops are better, but still nothing like they were.
I have since abandoned my Ranger’s beserker gear and have given up exploring with her. The warrior I created still gets a ton more loot so I put MF gear on that character. And that is the one I run around exploring in open PvE with. Guaranteed I will double the loot, be it trash or rare, on that one character.
I’d love to see them rework the magic find in the game. Make it infused like agony resist is now and free up the stats that matter. For those that don’t plan on ever needing agony resist; they can infuse each piece of gear with magic find instead. Or just do away with it all together and increase the rate of loot drops and chance at better.
This is coming from someone who has never had more than 48gold banked, no legendary, geared up two lvl80’s in crafted exotics, and checks the TP sell price on every piece of gear that drops before merchant. The problem with making gold in the game is that unless you set out to farm for it (dungeons/Orr runs/dragons), you won’t make it.

^^This is one that did a lot of research in Orr and about Magic Find.
I want your account.
I never did ask if you played a warrior or whether you are geared/traited for DPS or not. If I did then I attribute my loss of memory to age.

Lol people tell me I’m a good luck charm. When others ask me to party in Orr or an event, they always seem to get better loot. Granted it is probably just superstition and luck, but I don’t mind being peoples rabbit foot :P
I started way back with my warrior who was full dps and axe/axe. She eventually got an insane amount of MF 230%? and was my farming queen. But then I leveled my thief which I currently use, and have been in some of those pics/vids you mention. I love the short bow and the fact that it pings other mobs, as well as the aoe skills. I won’t lie I do spend a lot of money on those side pets, of course they aren’t uber farming helpers, but its funny to have my thieves guild out, and ember, and a ogre pet. Even if their damage is negligible, and they die in a few hits, always fun to have as many pets as a necro on my thief :P(I never used these pets while doing the MF testing)
For me 30% is a lucky number. It isn’t 0 and it isn’t 300. If you use the exact same MF all the time, you start to know when things are not going well, and you can adjust. I know how many porous bones I should be getting if I’m tagging well, I know how many bags I should be getting if I’m not overdoing events. People don’t need to find the secret gear set or trait set for every class, because there isn’t one as far as farming. They simply need to find what makes them most comfortable while farming, what is fun, what is efficient. Blend them together until you are happy. And like I said, for me having those cute pets out (even at a cost loss) is fun while I farm and I still make money. I gladly put up banners and food for people when I can, which is pretty much every day.. But people have to do the work themselves too. You don’t get rich or make good money by running away from a challenge.
Oh and PS- I call my thief build the glass vampire, see if you can figure that out :P
I know people have a hard time understanding the concept, but Random Number Generators (RNG) are… well… random. They are not fair, nor are they unfair, and they don’t make sense because there is no pattern even though there may seem to be a pattern when you are looking for one.
For example, I don’t “farm” anything, I just run around doing random stuff with different toons. This last week I realized I have two semi-retired level 80 toons I wasn’t using much, so I started going around to the level 15 bosses – Elemental, Wurm, Beast, Maw – to make a little money from the bonus rare that you get every day. I just do the event once every day or two when the Dragon Timer site shows my server is about to host the event, then go back to whatever else I was doing.
I have gotten two exotics in two days.
The first was from a boss event, either in the bonus chest or the big chest everyone loots, I forget which. I got some piece of armor or other that wasn’t anything spectacular, but it was my biggest loot drop at some 5g and change.
The second, well, I had a rare sword I bought with karma but later replaced. Can’t sell it or break it, so I decided to throw it in the Magic Forge. I spent a few silver on three of the cheapest rare weapons on the TP and threw them into the forge – and got an exotic sword worth 4g or so.
I used the coin to set my two 80s up with MF gear – basic stuff, not the most expensive items available, but enough to give them each +100 or so. I figure the exotics were “free money” and if it gives me a better chance to get more it’s worth it. Even if I never get another exotic drop I can still make enough to outfit my other toons as they level through getting a few bonus rares every day or two.
So, don’t go looking for ways to work the system, there aren’t any. Random is random, and sometimes good stuff happens, sometimes not.
Never farm mats, only farm money.
That’s how I’ve done it in every game. Works so far.

Mats=Money :P
So three older players have worked out scams to make money, the rest of the population has not, so obviously there is no issue with loot drops because three players “that have had insane luck and time to amass wealth” say there isn’t a problem for the rest of the populations, i beg to differ…
And if your way of making 80-100g is so genuine please inform the rest of the population how to do it, if not i must conclude your onto some scam..
This was gonna be a really long text with some slighty angry tone, mixed with disappointment and frustration on how hard it is to make gold. Instead I will go straight to the point;

I dont mind spending money on the game since it is support it, but I would rather keep spending it on the pets and aesthetics than on 2 exotic staves which will be decimated on the mystic toilet. I would rather spend the little gold I make on items I want, rather than item that dont drop ever.

Sounds to me like they might need to check their code again. I remember a 5 month dry spell when they kept refusing to believe that there was anything at all wrong with loot and then they finally figured it out.
Meanwhile the damage had already been done to their credibility especially since a mod and a dev basically insulted much of the playerbase.

Just to clarify, the problem was players getting credit for kills. Not the loot itself being a problem. The Orr bag increase happened after this. Doing some fun research at the moment to see the drops in Orr and how they are doing. Those who know me know I won’t stop till I’m sure :P

You know as soon as you start getting rares again from the hidden chests all throughout the maps like what was happening the first month after launch then you can tell me about this being the only problem. Yeah I have a long memory and I used to get rares from chests when I first started playing. In fact I would go around and search for these things manually (because at the time there were no online maps yet) and find these chests kill or trick the Champion guarding them get the treasure and leave. It was awesome to finally be in a game where you could actually find loot that wasn’t deflated artificially, until November.
So you see, it’s not just a “credit” issue, but you’ll just keep on believing it won’t you.
There are two massive threads (mostly hidden now) that attest to the contrary of what you believe btw, most of those players are probably gone by now because it wasn’t worth the time to try to pick up pennies in order to get enough silver to make a gold which is how this economy works now. There’s challenge and then there’s a second virtual job.
I love the game a lot and have enjoyed it immensely, but now I’m just bored – an Exotic drop once every two weeks just isn’t doing it for me.at least you are getting exotic drops.
I have only gotten only ONE rare drop on Orr in my entire gaming life……

I think MF = 2-3 porous bones to my 1 porous bone with no MF gear. I don’t think MF affects the quality just the quantity.

Conspiracy’s are conspiracy’s. People are welcome to believe what they wish, my drops are the same as they always have been. I was in that giant thread doing research unlike the people who just complained with no facts to back it up. In fact I was the person who first recorded the champs not dropping loot, recorded the champs dropping chests with less than rare. So I do also have a good memory when it comes to this sort of conspiracy theorist threads. There is no problem with drops other than RNG not being on your side at times. If you work hard you get reward, heck even if you don’t you get reward (maw).
Anecdotal evidence this month shows me that I got 5 exotics instead of the 0-1 I usually get. So clearly drops have increased and anet secretly increased them, or possibly did it just for me. Because that is exactly how MMO companies stay afloat is manipulating the economy in evil evil ways to spoil the fun for everyone, again, except me because I’m somehow special. /sarcasm
As far as the random little chests, most of them can be duped. Thiefs can hide and open, or u can get around them somehow. So why on earth would they make these drop rares or amazing things? Seriously with 1 click I can get at least 2 of those chests you speak of in Orr without ever having to fight anyone. How is that fair to people who do fight them? So yes, when I get blues and greens from them I don’t feel bad. Because it took little to no effort to do so. Alternatively event farming has become a bit more challenging, which I greatly appreciate. Because although before I could get just as much gold per hour, it was brain numbing.. boring.. and not the least bit challenging. Now I have to pay attention on my glass armor thief, I have to dodge and help kill the champs. It is fun and challenging, and that is exactly the reason they did it.
I’m working (again..) on some large samples of farming and drops to see what the average is. So far it is not a noticeable negative difference. And if anything it has improved, and now when I do this it is much more fun and rewarding.
I love the game a lot and have enjoyed it immensely, but now I’m just bored – an Exotic drop once every two weeks just isn’t doing it for me.at least you are getting exotic drops.
I have only gotten only ONE rare drop on Orr in my entire gaming life……
My recommendation for getting exotic drops is not using magic find gear but using zerker gear and running fotm with magic food.
I think MF = 2-3 porous bones to my 1 porous bone with no MF gear. I don’t think MF affects the quality just the quantity.
Specifically says and has been stated affects rarity, not quantity.
Whether drops are the same as they have always been or not. The OP’s point is the same. Consider increasing the drop rate, currently, it makes the game less fun.

For who? What will increasing do to people who make 10g a day or even 20? I’m sure John Smith could come in here and explain the economics behind bumping drop rates and its negative affects on the economy. So you are making more money, but now everything is more expensive. So you just did absolutely nothing by increasing drops. Same reason we don’t just make more money in the world, some people actually think to fix our debt we could just use our machines to print out more money and pay it off..
For the OP. We were getting off track talking about whether drop rates have declined or not, it’s irrelevant to the post.
Also, economically, increasing the drop rate would drive prices down so people would make less money, but they would need less money.
Agreed – the drop rate has decreased a lot over the past few weeks. I’ve noticed it in many ways, from the loot from farming to the salvage rate of ectos. Game becoming a bit of a boring grind.
You covered the loot nerf thread, and the ecto nerf thread in one sentence. But kept it inside another thread, so thanks for that, those solo threads get annoying to read. Conspiracy’s need to be more interesting.

So we should increase drop rates because he isn’t making money, and a few other people want to make more money? Okay, that sounds logical, I’ll email Arenanet right away.

Personally, I don’t care one way or the other. My only point (again) was that whether the drop rate has increased, decreased, or stay the same is irrelevant to whether the drop rates are optimal.

I don’t see how drop rates being increased is irrelevant to if they are optimal.
Drop rates were X before.
Drop rates are X+1 now.
So the only people who should be worried about if they are optimal is Arenanet, of which we have no control over. Who here is to say what your gold should buy, or mine, or anyone’s? They have an economist who tracks these things and makes sure that the overall goal is being reached. No one here can come up with that number as no one here has those tools and information. Optimal as you state it is based on opinion, the opinion coming from people who simply want it raised and have gathered no further information to support their view. Hence why there is no red tabs in this discussion, because there is no discussion, only a few peoples wish for entitlement.

you see, in a economy where money income is fixed, items have a minimun value price and trades are based upon supply/demand (once again, regulated by a minimun price, cant highlight how important minimun prices and fixed incomes are in any economy) you can actually calculate a good dropping rate that keep economy balanced.
I wont go much into mathematical details because I would probably bore you, but I will skip all that part and tell you that right now the economy is set up with a safety net; that is, drops are borderline the lower they can be while still being able to affect economy to adapt to fluctuation in populations. Here is the issue with that; there is a surplus of money, but not materials, which means that with a fixed gold income, you will try to maximize gains by doing dungeons and farming before diminishing returns, anything that deviates from that is ineffective. This causes an inflation, since the gold is present, but the mats arent, therefore prices raise (demand) while mats (supply) remains constant.
Now here comes the real issue; because nobody wants to farm corn and fruits, everyone wants to live in the urban area, the amount of people playing open world is too small, most mats come not from people going out there to farm them, but those who went somewhere out there, for a secondary objective, killed a few stuff and got “lucky”. Meaning, that if you wanted t6 mats you wouldnt go out there and kill stuff or do events on the open world, nstead you would go to CoF, farm it for 4 hours and get the gold for it. See the problem? It is a vicious cycle, you keep pumping gold out there but supply remains the same. AKA Inflation.
The system was designed for a certain number of people out in the open world, but Anet didnt take into account how personally unrewarding is going out there, they are thinking only on the big picture, which is the economy stability, but as a human being we are selfish, we want to see our time’s worth. I dont know if decreasing population of the game has anything to do with this, I dont have any statistics on this subject and it is hard to tell if people are quitting, but if they are this only makes the situation worse, since we are reaching almost the “safe net” limit, at which point the economy reaches peak inflation, and 3 golds would be just as hard to do now, but would get you just as little as 1 gold, maybe even less (once again, I lack the whole number behind it therefore I can only “estimate”)
tl;dr for those who dont like explanations: this game is setup for people to go out there, but personal reward is too small, therefore people tend to lean to gold farming, which leads to inflation since most of the time many mats can only be gained out side in the world. The economy has a safe net setup but possible decrease on population only makes the situation worse. A vicious cycle which could be solved if the community went out there and played, but since human nature is selfish, it wont happen.

Nerfed harder than the loot is rangers and engineers? Oh then it really isn’t that bad at all :o. But I agree the t6 mats does need to be cheaper, specifically powerful blood and crystalline dust.

it isnt about cheaper, (players set the price after all) its about dropping it more often, giving you a chance to make the decision: “should I buy it or should I farm it?” rather “let me spend hours playing and replaying a dungeon countless times to the point of boredom to be able to buy the stuff which I know even if i want to farm I wouldnt get otherwise.”

TY for typing all that out…..it saves me from doing it
I will add that this also creates a deterrent for new and casuals, which only serves to fuel the cycle further, along with other negative consequences.

yah specially newer players, I have a coworker playing with me now and all I got to say is he says he has no way of ever catching up to me now (which is understandable since he is fairly new) but the problem is that even if he tried really hard, he can barely get half of the stuff I had back when I was at his stage, more like not even 1/4. He is progressing so slowly its painful, and it has even deterred me from making alts, since I havent even had a chance to fully equip my char with another set of armor/weapon/builds.
I feel like we are hitting a wall. They are slowing down the game in order to keep people from leaving (laurels, horrible success rates, low drop rates etc) Im sorry but thats starting to lean towards korean MMO signature move…..
it creates a psychological need at first, but after a while, once you break through it, you realize in how much of a trance you were and how little fun you were actually having despite what you kept telling yourself.
It has happened to me with 2moons, Rohan, WoW, Aion and I wont let it happen again. Please Anet, dont let GW2 become another stepping ladder, just “Another MMO” who milked its costumers for a as long as they could, dont recycle the community. Keep the game interesting and fresh, give stuff to work on but dont make them a necessary task, make thing intrinsically fun, not just “get 250 of this mothereffing impossible material to get whose only purpose is slowing down your progress, by swinging your sword at a rat for 2 months”

Oh great, another subtle way to kill a thread; send it t the suggestion forum, that way the community wont see it. Gj, once again, losing my faith in the forums.

I noticed the same thing, made two new Asura characters, in metrica province and had very few drops of anything the whole time, ones now 42 and i’ve since given up trying to level these things, i had no issues getting what i needed when the game opened..now it is all TP or stop playing..
Economy or not the game is not fun to play at most levels anymore, and the world is dying just check outside of the world events and dungeon areas..

I agree, I feel like the very quickly send interesting threads to die here while maintaining NERF QQing on the main page.
Why aren’t those suggestions?
