So, I’ve been playing this game for over a year now (and I’ve been playing GW1 for quite some time before that) and I would like to mention that Guild Wars (1&2) is my favorite MMOG. I’ve recently gotten a bunch of my friends to start playing, and though they find it interesting, a few (and I agree with what follows) feel that some play-styles have gone unaddressed.
We feel that there should be a new Profession (or at least a new weapon) that covers unarmed combat/dual wielding. I love Dual Wielding swords, but the only Professions I seem to be able to do that on is the Warrior and the Mesmer. I’d very much like to see a Thief or a Ranger capable of dual wielding swords, as I think that highly mobile/extremely aggressive play-style would be better pulled off by those Professions.
As for unarmed combat, many of my friends like to play as a Fighter/Monk/Cleric kind of class, who pummels people into submission with their bare hands, and many others also find it a little lacking that a highly trained Warrior or Thief/Assassin can be masters of combative power… but can’t hurt a fly without anything equipped. We do realize the implications involved in allowing all classes unarmed skills, as there would be no way to enhance those skills the same way you could enhance weapon skills with higher powered weapons.
So our proposal is to have a Knuckle/Gauntlet type weapon (similar to dual wielding, having one for each hand, allowing for more customization for a play-style), having a unique set of skills for every profession (The Warriors would have skills similar to the Dwarven Brawling skills you had in GW1, where as the Mage-classes would, instead of being up close melee-fighters, they’d conjure magic up with their fists). Perhaps this could be added when travel to Cantha is instated on GW2?
Now, I really, REALLY, loved playing a Dervish in GW1. In my opinion, it was the best profession in the game. It, along with the Paragon, could summarize most of what happened in Nightfall. It was extremely versatile, able to synergize with any secondary profession (as well as synergize well AS a secondary profession) allowing people to play any way they wanted, especially when combined with the Avatar skills. What I really liked most however, was the high amount of damage I could do just with the Scythe. It was unique in that it had an area of effect hit. Now that many of the melee weapons in GW2 have an area of effect hit, it would indeed be somewhat redundant to add it now, except for new skills and looks. However, I feel that it’s AoE nature could be portrayed quite well through skills and I’d very much like it to return as a high-damage weapon. Not to mention it looks cooler than any greatsword could ever hope to be
We have large versions of swords in the greatsword. We have larger versions of maces in the hammer (both are blunt weapons, so it kinda fits together). We even have larger versions of wands, pistols and shortbows… So why not a larger version of the small Hatchets we have now? Sure, you could make a hammer skin or even a greatsword skin (don’t. ever.) that looks like a large axe… but neither of them really fit the Axe style, the hammer being too blunt, and the greatsword being mostly a slash/stab weapon. Where the greatsword and hammer are meant to batter down peoples defenses, an axe is meant to CHOP down peoples defenses. That being said, I don’t think the small axes compare well against a thick shield or bulky armor. A Greataxe on the otherhand, would most definitely compare well. Here’s a couple ideas my friends threw at me when I asked them what they thought; Unblockable attacks, if an Axe is so large that it takes two hands to wield it, it’s undoubtedly very heavy and would require a powerful swing, powerful enough that it would sheer through the arm of anyone who would think to raise their shield against it; lots of large bleeding/vulnerable effects, as stated above, an axe that large would probably tear right through a shield, decapitating limbs as it went, and when you’re missing a limb, I’m pretty sure you would be bleeding quite a bit, and would most likely suffer from a case of vulnerability.
Last one, as this post is already a wall of text (sorry ;w;)
Spears, Lances, Spontoons and Pikes. Why not? If the Trident and the Harpoon Gun have terrestrial counterparts, how about giving one to the Spear? They don’t have to be throwable like the spears Paragon’s used in GW1, but they would be a nice addition to the menagerie of two handed and dual wieldable weapons. I dunno, I guess I play too much Fire Emblem and think that a games unbalanced if it has two weapon-classes from the weapon trinity, but not the third. XP
