The multiple guilds issue has been discussed in more threads. They should have allowed only one guild per account like in GW1.
Character based guilds is another stupid idea from the other 99.9999% of MMOs.
To be loyal to a guild you need to be in it with all characters, other wise you are just a by-passer

This is pretty ridiculous. Sould I be limited to only playing asura because I enjoy my asura guild? No. That’s a stupid idea.

So, what do you do with people with 10+ alts who want to be in the same guild with all of them/ Whisper someone every time to add your new character in? And then a guild with 100 names will only have only 10 people?

This is more annoying then just putting your self offline if you don’t want them to see you not representing

Simple – if a person has more than one alt in a guild, they occupy the same spot, as it is now. I see no problem with letting a guild know that two different chars on an account are the same player – what people are asking for is to not have everyone immediately know the identity of all your alts without your express permission.

what people are asking for is to not have everyone immediately know the identity of all your alts without your express permission.

If A-Net didn’t show your account name then people would complain they need to remember lots of names of just one person – like they did in GW1. Now that you dont need to remember all alts of one person, they complain against it.
Seriously, if you want to hide from others, why are you actually playing a MMO? The single player games are still on the market. In GW2 they offer you the posibility to block people so they cant talk to you, what is the problem if they see you online or not?
They see you don’t represent their guild? Than, what other reason had you to join them other then your own advantage?
You can put your self offline all the time so only those you whisper too will know you are there.

You gave your account name and let people know who you are? Like schoolmates, co-workers, boyfriends girlfriends you dont want to talk to anymore? This is your real life issue not the game’s fault.

In Guild Wars 1, unless you were mutual friends you didn’t know where the other person was. That’s one small change they could make right there.

It’s true that the system is a bit “stalkish”.
The blocked not really getting blocked is the most urgent and “fixable” imo.
If you block someone that person shouldn’t be able to see anything about you, online status, location, names, map chat, not even the toon itself on the map, and vice versa.

Some of the other complains I’ve read would be tricky, like more individual characters, but as long as blocking works it should be ok.

On the guilds nagging to represent with every toon, thats the fast track to my leave button, specially since a player can be more important to them than they are for the player.

This all “privacy” thing in a MMO comes only from the people who want to hide themselves from someone or something. What are you guys hiding? What “dirty” things are on your minds that you feel others are stalking you in a MMO?

While I do agree female people get more attention in videogames, let’s not skip past the fact that a lot of female names and characters are owned by male players.

Privacy is a right, not a privilege. There are a large number of us out there who don’t live out our lives via Facebook, Twitter, Bebo, Myspace and so forth. We have private lives that we want to keep private.

What do we have to hide? There isn’t a single person out there who doesn’t have something to hide – including you, and the last I checked, it wasn’t a criminal offence to do so either. It’s actually common sense.

Random players do not need to know where I am in GW2, nor do they need to know the identity of my characters. If I am trolling with one character, they can report that character to ANet who would surely be able to check their logs anyway and trace that character back to the offending player. ANet need to know who’s playing what, but other players certainly don’t need to know what I do with my alts.

I stole a special snowflake’s future by exercising my democratic right to vote.

I do not see a problem there.
I mean, I will say this: the mass of people add me to the list, and they do it with many people. This happens often, cause these people dont have such a guild, to hve got any person, to write etc By the way, I do not think that women here hve got a problem or smt. I know so many girls in gw2, and in this game is really a lot of them.

Of course there are strange situations too. Im leader of my guild, and also meet with them. Sometimes im gaining enemies – you know, when I’ll kick some1 from a guild, or do not respond positively to his application. That happens, but hey – i just laugh at this, and does not restore much attention, and they give up Sometimes it will go to someone who actually exaggerates, and then u can block it, and close the case. Or even report. But what if that person has you on the list? Nothing. Of course, until this person dont break the rules. Besides, if any random persons adds you to the list, is unlikely that plans to do something bad, cause they just dont know u. They know nothing about you, so what they can even do? Just dont answer them if u dont want. The worst is just with people who know you, and may use this informations against you. But in this case friends list is the smallest problem, cause this people often have got ur facebook, or other things, and can follow ur person more closely, not only in the game. But hey – just do not think about it. ;D Of course, until the person does not become burdensome, does not scare you. Then you should report it. I had a situation, that a girl met in the game has followed me like that :P

This may not be a problem for everyone, but in certain situations like mine- it is.

I made the friendly but terrible mistake of sharing my username and have had to live with the fact that I have 70+ followers. I shot myself in the foot because I’m a pseudo-celebrity and now I have fans that follow me.

I thought at first it wouldn’t be that much.

My problem is my name has been shared and shared again and you wouldn’t believe the amount of whispers I get. I don’t run a guild or anything, I’m just someone who can’t devote all their time to responding to whispers. I explain my situation over and over again to the fans- that I’m far too busy to be able to talk with each of them. I’m as nice as I can be…and I’ve tried to own up to my mistake. But it does feel like I’m being punished.

I have maybe 3 hours a day to play if that…on a good day due to my profession. An hour or two responding to folks can take up all that time. Though I have been told I’m being too generous with my time- I can’t realistically get all these people to understand my situation…even if one or two folks get it.

Because they can see what map I’m on too- inevitably if they don’t get a response to their whisper, they’ll track me down in game.

Y’can’t be mean to these guys. There are some stalkers in every MMO, but what I have is just an abundance of nice people who if I don’t respond to I’m sure are a little crushed.

Blocking these folks is bad because they have their friends write me e-mails saying “I thought you were nice, but now I’m not so sure.”

Once again, this problem only affects probably a few people…but it’d be nice to -at least- have the ability to approve followers before they can track your online presence.

Or I guess I should just be a jerk. e_e

if by username you mean display name then everyone can see that, in quite a few ways rather easily (your actual username would be your email address actually, as that is what you uses to login), so i dont see how you sharing it is that big of a deal. So yeah i say be a jerk to them because imo they are being jerks to you if they whisper you, just to chat, and such if they never even talked or played with you before.

He said he was a pseudo-celebrity. My guess what he did is, tell people that know him as “Joe Smith” that his Guild Wars 2 username was Bunny.308. All the people that follow him (YouTube maybe?) now know that. They gave out his name to others and because he is a somewhat public figure, this means they all want to talk to him. And that he must want to talk to them. People are funny about celebrities, of any type.

About a month too late here, but I stumbled upon this in a web search while searching for other things.

Just going to say that you might have to resort to buying another account. This issue has been brought up multiple times, and to my knowledge Anet have yet to dignify us with an answer as to why the system works like this.

The “invisible at logon” feature was in beta, until they broke it with the new launcher and didn’t bother to fix it since. It’s also in GW1 and seems to be working fine there. Using invisible mode in GW2 is a crapshoot anyways, because sometimes it seems other people can still see you online or message you regardless.

Moreover, posting threads like this will get you attacked by those that feel your privacy is a trivial matter “because it’s an MMO,” or that it’s somehow your fault that you feel this way. This is the Facebook generation we’re talking about — we’re used to having our privacy compromised or having to “opt-in” to basic privacy features in exchange for a service. And sadly, this is probably the reason this won’t get fixed for a very long time, if ever — there aren’t enough people to make a stink over it.

It’s funny, because most of us would object to being followed in real life. People may know our names, phone numbers, or even home address, but that doesn’t mean they’re suddenly aware of all actions we take throughout the day.

Spending your private time how YOU want to? You’re doing it wrong!

Being followed irl and someone staring at your name on a computer screen, not messaging you and not following your character in any way is completely different. You want privacy? Go invisible at log in, don’t use personal information as names, don’t tell people your gender. Want to take it a step further? Don’t talk to people. Don’t want to take steps to ensure your own privacy? Don’t expect other people to. While it is important for companies to protect the privacy of their customers, privacy should not count as whether or not the player is online, what character they’re playing, and where they are. These are ultimately meaningless facts when the stalker is doing nothing with them. Now if he/she is, that’s a different story. A lot of this sounds like victim blaming but people want something that can be easily obtained through their own actions, and like I said, are blaming a system instead of the creepers behind it.

Mmmm, tanpopo.9102 is in Cursed Shore. Time to relish that know this while not messaging or following them….

I agree that there should probably be a friend request feature. (though, if you’re really concerned, you can just put all your followers on your ignore list) Also, an “Invisible” at login feature would be nice, like how they had it originally. However, I think separate friends lists for individual characters is too much.

I must say I dont really like systems where you cant choose to be visible or not. You should be able to set your status as online or apper offline at least. And your account name should never be visible to anyone unless you approve it.
Stuff like that is basic online privacy and security features.

Its not been an issue for me in GW2 yet, but its one of hte reasons I never used realID with Bliz. We should control our online visibility.

Except that you can’t, really. As soon as you hit “play” it notifies everyone who’s friended you that you’re online – there’s a popup message.

It also updates your location continually, regardless of what play status you selected.

Were I to take it into my head to follow someone around and harass them in game, the effort to locate them would be trivial – you simply press ‘y’ and it tells you, regardless of play status.

This wasn’t true in Beta – nor was it true in gw1. You selected your status before logging in, and nothing in-game advertised your presence/location. This is how it should be.

I’m having a similar issue. I can’t believe why any MMO would let a blocked person see you online, location, achievements etc. I am literally being stalked, this person knows out my phone number IRL and my e-mail adress. And sends me occasional messages. But I can’t report this person in game because theres no record of inappropriate behaviour in the game, just the stalking. He keeps doing the same stuff as I do. One day I got a sms in the middle of the night that my old facebook was re-activated. It made me so uncomfortable that I changed server and formatted both my computers. I tried e-mailing Anet. but they told me to report him ingame. Under the report window it says they will only judge it by what has been written in-game. Please fix the block-list…

Fixing the block list so that you can’t be seen online by persons on it anymore is a must. I also agree that they should fix the option to appear invisible when logging in, the current situation is just useless, they should copy it from GW1 there it worked.

Adding an option that you need to approve of friendship invites could be an option to be inserted ingame, I don’t need it but I can clearly see why this would be a good option for many people.

But I really hope they never change that adding someone to your friendlist or guild shows the display name and all characters. It is annoying as hell to have your friend or guild list cluttered with all the character names of people and always needing to add new chars. And honestly, when I registered my account it told be it is a “display name” so it was clear to me it could be seen (on a side note, if you want to hide your display name, stop posting on the forums ). If some guilds are bugging you because you are not representing all the time, just leave, they are not the right guild for you / not tolerant in their guild management as other guilds. And if the issues above are fixed I see no reason why not all your characters should be shown on the friendlist since you could hide whenever you want.
