I’m making the effort to move this thread:

https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/gw2/Uninstanced-Salma-new-walls/first

Here.

Along with an official statement,

Dear ArenaNet,

We, your roleplay community, have been fairly quiet on these forums. It is ot often that we complain about in game mechanics, or that we fuss over people being too strong in PvP. We’re fairly quiet, because well, we’re out experiencing the rich lore and world that you have designed for us— and all players. However, I speak for many, when I say that your RP community is quite upset with how you’ve blocked off U. Salma, and ultimately, a very high level RP spot for players.

The role playing community is relatively quiet on the forum here (for the most part) because of one reason: Arena Net did a good job of keeping role players entertained by giving us access to certain locations and allowing us to find ways to create our own stories without getting stressed in the process.

However, when locations start to get closed off after players have been using certain locations for months at a time, it’s extremely upsetting to those participating in such places. A building or a house being shut away is one thing, but an entire district of Divinity’s Reach is a whole different story.

Now I can understand why Arena Net might want to close off an area like that. Reducing the amount of players visiting that location probably saves a bundle on memory usage across the server, but so does removing unnecessary objects, scripted events, etc. from certain locations. I can understand you want your world to feel more alive, Arena Net, but at the very same time if your servers are over cluttered and you need to conserve memory, removing some stuff would be a good choice. For example: You could set it where the NPCs and such only appear in Instanced Salma during personal story quests, but then remove the NPCs running around in Uninstanced Salma District because there’s no reason for them to be there if nobody can see them.

Optimization. I can understand the desire to clean up your world a bit to smooth performance, but don’t do it at the expense of the players’ enjoyment. Remove mobs from a location that gets WAY too much action (such as saving the Ascalon Settlement with those centaurs that never stop spawning up at the Dwayna Courtyard), and that’s just an example. There have always been a lot of places that need more attention and more bug / glitch solving than a location such as Uninstanced Salma.

Which again begs the question of why Arena Net would choose to close the location off.

It’s been said already that role players have been using that location for their own role play for about nine months (give or take) and so it’s a popular location with establishments that players have created (such as a tea house) and it helps them find enjoyment in their evening hours (or whenever time it is when you hooligans decide to role play).

The problem is that not everyone who plays MMO games is a hardcore PvP / WvW / PvE player. Not everyone wants to spend their evening hours farming for tier 6 materials in Orr or Frostgorge for their legendary weapon. Not everyone wants to get all of their characters to max level with the best gear and the best builds and the best dungeon farming solo groups and blah blah blah. There are a LOT of people who play the game to role play, but it seems more and more that the role playing community is being punished while new PvE / PvP / WvW content is released.

So… why close off such a heavily used location? Really we just want an honest answer, not a quick “It was an exploit that we closed off” answer. From what I’ve seen, the role play community within Guild Wars 2 is very understanding and mature (for the most part), so we’ll understand if it was a real issue that was causing trouble on your end, Arena Net. Just please be honest with us.

I would appreciate if a Dev could read, and respond to this — or the other forum.

Thank you kindly,
A Roleplayer.

Consider my voice added to this call.

Anet, I absolutely love your game and the universe you’ve created, it is such a marvelous place to RP and a genuinely fun game. I have happily spent money in the gem store in faith, knowing the money would be going to improving the game. It is for that reason that I am displeased by your seeming lack of care when it comes to the roleplaying community who play your game, many of whom happily pre-ordered a long time before the game was even released.

Anet, we aren’t asking you for a miracle or a game breaking change. All we want is a few places opened up to us for the community to truly appreciate the world you’ve created.

Open up Salma permanently, open up a few buildings in the settlements around the world for us to use, it ain’t too much to ask, is it?

RPers are moneyspenders and since we spend much time RPing we
A: Create a immersible world.
B: Spend less time hitting things in game..causing us to have to buy gold
C: We will stick around for a long time if we feel at home.

This is one of the best places that I can go into and 100% get roleplay since people in there are always roleplaying. Please don’t cut us out.

I don’t even care if the gates are not opened or we have to nearly die to get into there, as long as we continue to have access to salma: that is all I care about.

Another +1 from me, from one of the major roleplaying guild of Piken Square with about 30 members, based in the district. Those closed doors and the invisible wall leaves a bigger gap between us, roleplayers and you, ANet, then the actual Great Collapse.

As an RP’er on Piken Square, I’ve found a lot of my RP over the last week or so in U. Salma. It being closed has now made the guild I was RP’ing with very worried, because all other locations suitable for their RP within Divnity’s Reach are already claimed – one by a guild I am a member of – and they don’t feel comfortable RP’ing in Salma anymore in case the other entry-ways are closed off.

My suggestion would actually have been to make ALL the home districts have an uninstanced version that can be accessed, including Cragstead, now.

It’s obvious that U. Salma wasn’t intended to be accessible, but I’d love to be able to talk about the reasons for that with Anet. It’s a great area for RPers and a shame to lose it. RPers spend a lot of time in the world built by Anet. Not moving from mob to mob or event to event: but enjoying and making use of the spaces Anet builds. Please reconsider the decision to close the uninstanced Salma district. The fact that so many use it shows their love and enthusiasm for the world you have built, Anet.

RPers are moneyspenders

I wish companies would start realizing this. RPers don’t just sit in cities and roleplay all day. They play the game and roleplay. They buy items to enhance their roleplay, too. We spend money on this kind of thing because we love it.

I enjoy GW2 a lot but so far there hasn’t been much thrown to RPers. We have the bare bones to make RP happen and the customization in game is lovely, but when changes like this are implemented it hits the community hard.

I think having an area free of scripted events and open for free form role play is wonderful, and is one of the reasons I’m still playing the game. Seeing the creativity in evidence in Salma is refreshing, and often I’ll spend a whole evening there, seeing what comes up.

I honestly see no bad from giving RPers a few spots. It’s not like they are asking a whole dungeon from you, like other groups. They are not even asking to change something in the district. Nothing to be developed, nothing new. You already have everything there, so just let them have it.

This world needs more people being frank and less people being offended.

It was inevitable that they would try and shut it off eventually, we were never supposed to be able to reach there in the first place, but try as they might, Anet aren’t very good at stopping players from exploring. Uninstanced Salma is far from unreachable, its still as easy as ever, you just have to take a different route. Try this for instance:

I’m sure you roleplayers could come up with an imaginative reason why players must request entry from a mesmer to get inside.

Another player from the vibrant and amazing roleplaying community of Piken Square adding their support here.

Uninstanced Salma had become an extremely active spot for roleplay, and contained several extremely useful open buildings, of which there are few, these were integral to the roleplay of several groups. I’d like to see Salma district made available for all of these groups to partake in roleplay together, rather than being separated into groups of five.

I support this thread, though I think we should request uninstanced districts/homes for all capitals (Rata Sum, the Grove, etc…). Roleplayers don’t play only humans, or in Divinity’s Reach : in Jade Sea server, there’s a LOT of active Sylvari roleplayers in the grove, and also quite a lot of Norns in Hoelbrak.
I’d like uninstanced homes/districts for other races too, it really annoys me that those beautiful/interesting places are just used for the personal story while they’re so good for roleplaying.

As Captain (read: overlord) of the Lionguard RP guild on Piken Square, I demand you open the area fully once more, or we subject you to a grievous fine, and some Lionguard hospitality (read: a very severe wedgie and some chinese burns you’ll never forget!). You can’t escape, either – as Lionguard, I take my jurisdiction with me, and and not afraid to use it!

… And while we’re at it, assuming this top-notch intimidation has worked, can we open up the other instanced house-zones? So much missing from just a simple collision wall. So much!

P.S. bribes will not work in this here, so give in!

I’m rather in agreement with the crowd here. At the very LEAST, open them if you are going to remove access. If you had done something about it MUCH sooner @ Anet, then sure, maybe it WOULD have been fine. But waiting so long after things are already established there, it’s like you are doing it just to kitten off the playerbase. What the hell are / were you thinking?

I, too, would be interested in hearing if there was any harm in accessing the uninstanced Salma that prompted this effort. I was actually hoping for uninstanced versions of home quarters becoming available and now what we get is a step in the opposite direction which looks just like an unnecessary kick in the gonads of the RP community until there was some sort of problem with it in the first place.

Not sure how else to put out how I feel when companies take over delicate and excellent roleplaying spots from the community, it was a frequent fault in Blizzard to do exactly that. Take away what roleplayers have grown to love then give little or no reply as to why other than “Exploit”.

In this case, yes it is an exploit – but a harmless one, and I can see how many players are getting irate over it. But I think on the flip-side players will have to compromise with or without reason and relocate – think of it as a chance to expand the roleplay in the world – yes there are many unfriendly places that make it difficult to roleplay in to begin with but there are also several places which are equally friendly to the unfriendly ones.

Whatever happens, roleplay will persist and we’ll adapt either way. All we can hope for is a reason why from ANET with an optimistic outlook.

Adding my voice to this. Uninstanced Salma was a great place of RP for many guilds and individuals. Taking it away ruins a LOT of RP.

It’s no surprise, though. I’ve yet to play an MMO that had devs actively working on things for the RP communities. Every MMO I’ve ever played has focused 95% of its efforts on the PvE and PvP content. RPers have always been left hanging in the background. We are the red-headed step-childs of MMORPGs, unfortunately. Hopefully ANet will even bother to read this thread and let us know what the big deal is. I won’t hold my breath, though.

As Mokzie said, please open up the other instanced areas while you’re at it. No NPCs, nothing. Just space to RP in and explore, Uninstanced Salma was fantastic because it required a special technique to get in; perhaps something similar could be implemented for the other areas? People won’t miss anything if they’re not interested in being there, but for those who are, they’ll be surrounded by many other individuals excited to explore the world in a more open state.

I am a roleplayer on Tarnished Coast. I love roleplay which is what I use MMO environments specifically for. Uninstanced Salma has been an impeccable space for roleplayers of GW2 to band together. Divinity’s Reach is the big RP hot spot and outside of Salma’s District, players have no access to buildings to use outside of taverns and houses.

While those above are appreciated, the uninstanced Salma district has been used to host a player run hospital, a player run safe house, a player run tavern, a player run tea house, in addition to the space provided from uninstanced Salma District as a happy location to have more varied RP in.
