This is not as simple as you think. Yes, primarily, a skin wardrobe is a quality of life thing. But it can influence PvE a great deal in a way, you might not realize.

The following is how I see it implemented (this is just my vision, which can obviously be improved by smarter people than me)

Why it’s needed: Keeping armor/weapon skins in the bank is messy and very inconvenient. It’s also impossible, due to space limitations, and a high price of buying new tabs. That’s why we don’t see anybody collecting armor skins extensively. Also, GW2 has an appearence-based progression. As in skins. As in the end-game boils down to getting more skins. /nuff said

UI: A new window, with 5 tabs: Light Armor, Medium Armor, Heavy Armor, Weapons and Costumes. In each tab should be a list of all of the available skins in game, corresponding to that tab. They should be organizable alphabetically by name, by type (chest, hands, axes, bows, etc.) and by set name (applicable only to armor and costumes tabs), and should be greyed out at first.

As a skin is added (unlocked) to your collection, it should be available to use by any character on your account. There should still be limitation on light classes not being able to wear heavy skins for example, but any class should be able to add any skin to their collection, so that their alt can use it.

The process of unlocking skins can be done in different ways. My proposition – use transmutation stones, as they are already in the game, and are currently not used at all. Make it cost a different amount of transmutation stones, depending on the rarity of the skin. And make the original item be destroyed as you add the skin, to prevent people buying items on TP to just get the skin and re-sell the item. Using the skin that you’ve already unlocked however should be free and infinitely available for any character on your account, as it’s done with the HoM rewards.

Good things this will do for A-NET bank account: People will start buying transmutation stones, and using them up. Plus, all of the following directly profits Arena.

Good things this will do for players: Provides a new type of goal, to collect all (or as many as possible) skins. You’ll be amazed how many ppl are obsessive completionists, just eager for a new check-list to fill. It will also allow for people to change their appearance more easily and frequently, meaning a more visually pleasant and varied mass of players, instead of everybody wearing CoF armor.

Good things this will do for PvE: Throw more people in different dungeons. Right now, everybody is running 1-2 most profitable/quick dungeons. This will urge people to collect tokens from different places, to get different and eventually all dungeon armor sets. This is especially important now, since with the introduction of Fractals, the normal dungeons are turning into ghost-towns (not that Ascalon).

Also, it will create a new use for karma, as currently, people are just banking it in hopes to get legendary weapons one day. Now they can use it to buy skins for karma

You can even go a step further, and add zone-specific skins that can drop only from mobs in a certain zone (make it zone-specific instead of mob type-specific, so to prevent farming hot-spots). Those drops should be soulbound, so that people can’t buy them on auction house, and should have a small (but not frustratingly so) drop rate. This will throw a huge wave of players to all of the zones of the game, if each of the zones has a unique-looking set that drops only in that zone. No more complains of the world being deserted.

Show your support for this topic, so that we can get some attention to it from the devs. I honestly believe it can be a great benefit to the game.

TL;DR
Skin wardrobe is good. Convenient way of keeping and organizing unlocked skins. A new goal at endgame – collect all skins. More people will do unpopular dungeons, and other areas of the game, if they can unlock a new skin out of it. Unlocking the skin should destroy the item, but make the skin permanently available and free to any character on account.

NEWS
Well, I have some good news for you, guys. It looks like ANet are aware of this issue, and are thinking about doing something very similar to what I suggested with this thread. In the recent interview Colin Johanson even mentions a wardrobe and how collecting skins should be supported. Here’s the link to the video with the timestamp on that question:
http://youtu.be/Jy7CcwnfUdU?t=19m40s
So cheer up, hopefully it won’t be long till we can close this thread.

I love this idea! I’ve filled up an entire guild bank with a full set of every armor I could afford, just so that I can change appearance when I feel like it.

Being able to extract the skins in some way and add them to a locker would give me a long-term goal (i.e. full completion of the exotic and crafted armors), as well as make my low-level alts look decent.

This is one of the top items on my Christmas wishlist, ANet!

I really like this idea too.

It’s makes skins feel like a collector hobby. It’s much better than choosing a set of favourite skin and ignore the rest – creating a wall to end-game. If the structure is like the “collector”, it’ll definitely helps players to feel motivated to collect more than 1 set of skins. The collector approach is good.

It’s just like trading card games. We collect and place them in albums. We take it out and put into our deck if we want to use them. If we want to use them, we can transmute into our gears with the stones. If we want to change back, we can transmute a dungeon gear on top of another dungeon gear without having to fear of losing it.

They probably even can sell more transmuted stones with this collector approach.
Currently, players only use it once on their favourite skin and never use anymore.

I fully support the suggestion made by gibzy.

I have a feeling the high cost of getting more bank space is probably why it happens the way it does. But I guess maybe if they figured they could make more with transmutation rocks or something.

This must be done.

Skin unlocks will ALWAYS be better than only being able to equip a single immutable set of skins. They add variety, freedom, long term goals that do not affect or limit combat.
Much like unlocked dyes are better than the old GW1’s fixed dye system, this is better than being limited to a skin.
Once you get a max tier, you no longer have need of better gear, and getting a new armor means you’ll have to get rid of older armors eventually, as storage is limited for them. And the game ‘stops’ for you in that area.

Adding a grindy tier does not fix that, because many people will see that tier as an unattainable goal.

But with skin unlocks, even if getting them all is unattainable for you, you can still go for some of them.

Getting some of the materials for an ascended is useless, they’ll be siting in your storage for ages until they are usable, but every skin you unlock gets to be used, making every step in skin progression a worthwhile one.
And once you have the skins unlocked, you can freely mix and match and wear the skins you like the most.

Something like this must be done.

Yes! A million times this! I suggested something similar a while back. We NEED this. I really want to collect skins, but it’s incredibly difficult right now.

ArenaNet, if you are looking for ways to extend game length this will do it for many players. Add an official way of collecting something and players will do it. I want to collect ALL of the skins but with how difficult it is to collect, and actually use, these skins currently I’m just not even bothering.

Make the skins per character (like dyes) and require a transmutation stone every time you want to use them. I guarantee you’ll see more players using transmutation stones to change their looks knowing they aren’t losing the old skin that is being overwritten.

This is such a good idea! I love collecting skins, but I just have nowhere to put them now. This sounds like a perfect way to implement an ability for all of us collectors to go crazy. ANET, please implement this!

Just, one more thing to add: a tab for town clothes/costumes. The only reason that I haven’t bought any of them from the gem store yet is because I don’t have enough storage to keep the skins around!

Excellent suggestion OP.

I can say for sure that I know of at least a dozen people that would buy way more skins from the cash shop if:
1) They had a separate place to store them.
2) They were account bound.
3) Multiple characters could wear the skin without removing it, placing it in the bank, swapping characters, getting item from the bank etc.

P.S.
These same dozen people would also buy more dyes if the packs weren’t grab bag style and were usable for the whole account as well. As it stands now it’s just too exspensive to really go for it in the cosmetic department for people who have more than 1 or 2 alts.

Something definitely needs to be done to help out those of us who love skins. I know there was a thread on here a while back that also suggested a method for this and his idea was pretty good too.

I would even be ok with this just being character specific. Maybe you could create two separate ones. An account wide storage option for town clothes and a character specific one for armor.

To be honest, I think your idea has one flaw. You propose using the t-stones to put the skins into the skin saver, but then being able to always put any of the skins on any item for free after that. Well, I don’t think that’s going to fly because that means that (before more skins get put in) you could actually reach a point where you are no longer using t-stones. Why is this an issue? Because they’re on the cash shop and so are obviously one of the ways Anet counts on to make additional money.

Instead I think it would be better to use something to save the skin (it could be a t-stone or it could be a new item) and then when you withdraw the skin from your collection it pops out as a white item with no stats that you can use the t-stone on to convert it. So, now you’re still going to be using t-stones every time you want to give yourself a new look.

I concur on all points.

I would absolutely buy appearances if I could bank them. I don’t have room in my bank for skins, and right now it’s remarkably difficult to keep a skin I like when I acquire another I like better. I either have to get rid of the previous skin or find another item with equivalent stats, and that’s painful.

Thanks for a positive response!

Let me explain why I’m against character bound stuff. Just one reason – it restricts you from playing you alts. For example, if I ever get a legendary weapon on my main, I’d want to always run with it. Swithing to my alt with a simple berserker’s greatsword of something instead of twilight would really suck.

As for the transmutation stones: there is an easy fix for the problem you’ve mentioned. Just make it so the amount of transmutation stones it takes to save the skin depend on it’s rarity. In that case, ANet can actually make it more profitable for them, if they, for example, make it cost 100 stones to save a Legendary.

This has very much to do with psychology. It doesn’t feel right paying for using something that you’ve worked for and got already. While paying to “unlock” something forever is usually perceived positively.

I agree, except on the part of it being account bound. The skins should be character bound. There’s no reason for a Medium armour class to have to sort through Light and Heavy armours. That’s one of the main gripes of the TP, don’t implement that limitation it in another system.

If that’s your only gripe with it being account bound – I mentioned in the OP that there should be different tabs for Light/Medium/Heavy armor. No sorting needed)

I don’t think they need to be account wide necessarily. The skins often show mastery of some area of the game (like a particular dungeon) that you might not be masterful of on an alt.

But Ascended gear makes this problem so much worse. With its higher stats (and infusions, for doing Fractals), players are forced now to either limit themselves to only one skin set, or to sacrifice a half-tier worth of stats. I currently switch between 3 full dungeon sets just to change appearances; am I supposed to get 3 or more (expensive!) Ascended sets to transmog into those skins I like?

That is sad and boring. Instead, we should only need to collect armor with different stats (Power/Vit/Condition set, Power/Precision/Crit set etc) and should be free to change those skins daily if we want without losing 10+ days worth of grinding a dungeon for tokens every time. Those skins were our rewards, let us use them

I would be one of those people collecting all the skins. It would be a fun and long lasting goal. I wonder how feasible it would be to have such a system? I would love it.

As an alternative to tabs, NPCs could be populated into the Hall of Monuments. You could have an NPC for each type of armor (light, medium, heavy), weaponsmiths of different types. Then they could work like the HOM npc now works. As you “unlock” the skins, they could then have them there. It would be great to be able to “build” your HOM by doing things in GW2.

Alternatively these NPC’s could be in your home district.

I would pay for an expansion that had a feature like this.

…..snipped out some**
To be honest, I think your idea has one flaw. You propose using the t-stones to put the skins into the skin saver, but then being able to always put any of the skins on any item for free after that. If they require the previously suggested method of having unlocks require the transmutation stones and having more stones required for the rarer armor and weapons I think it would have the opposite effect.

I have my stones sitting in the bank in a big pile. It isn’t worth it to me to transmute while leveling because I would have to transmute every time I got a higher level piece of armor.

I bought a set of fine to transmute a look for my level 80. One look. I would love to have multiple looks but it takes up bank space.

I would love to have it so that you use the transmutation stones to unlock the item once for the account. Then have it like the HOM npc where you can then use it without further use of the stones or anything else.

It’s a kitten conspiracy. Kittens gonna be kittens. All is vain!

Multiple stones per armor part is a bad idea and just promotes farming them ingame. It only takes 1 stone to transmute any armor to any other similar armor piece. ArenaNet did away with multiple level stones to keep the game more streamlined and for ease of sales. So to keep this positive here is a suggestion as to how this transmutation could work using the same amount of transformation stones that are used now.

  1. A Skin Transformation item becomes available from an NPC in your Home Instance (makes people actually visit the home instance) who sells it to the players for 50 karma (a small karma sink).
  2. This item is then combined with the armor/weapon/item you wish to remove the skin from giving you an armor/weapon/item skin.
  3. That skin is then placed into your skin locker or shown to an NPC who records it and lets you obtain as many of them as you wish, just like the Hall of Monuments works.
  4. These skins can not be sold once placed in the skin locker/shown to the skin NPC, or obtained from the skin NPC.
  5. L80 armors would still need to use fine transmutation stones with the skin transformation items, thus promoting sales but not being mandatory to buy from the store, just like they are now.
  6. They are of course account bound allowing use on any of your characters.

I agree with a wardrobe tab being added to the game. The current system of destroying equipment to transmute it makes me MUCH less likely to use/buy transmutation stones than if there was a system that allowed for cheap, easy storage of gear sets and a cheap/easy way to switch between armor and weapon skins.

I am willing to pay a transmutation stone cost to add them to my permanent wardrobe slot; however, I’m not willing to pay to transmute armor on a one time use that destroys the skin of the transmuted item. I haven’t bought transmutation stones from the cash shop yet and currently have no plans of doing so in the future. Plus, being a completionist and collector at heart this would add an insane amount longevity to the game.

I would prefer to see this as an account bound feature though; adding artificial barriers of entry for alt play (i.e. starting the game over from scratch) doesn’t encourage me to play alts. I think alts should have to play to level 80 and get exotic gear (stats) themselves but not have to repeat the grind for skins that has already been done by your account. You’d still have to run a dungeon enough times to get all three sets (light, medium, heavy) and weapons before I would be considered to be ‘done’ with a dungeon so I don’t see why this would decrease dungeon population.

To elaborate my reasoning on dungeon populations, even over time: How many times would an account have to run a dungeon to unlock everything from it? What are the current averages accounts are running (alts included) dungeons currently? How likely are accounts to run a dungeon multiple times for a full set of gear they’ve already unlocked on another character? How long does it take a player(not how many runs, but how long a period of time), once they decide to unlock a specific dungeon set, to unlock it and stop running the dungeon currently? There are other factors to consider and I would need data to verify it and run probabilities but I doubt very much that the average account (or even lucrative accounts, where the money is) has/will run any dungeon that many times before they stop going there anyways out of sheer repetitive boredom.

This has my full support, and should be at the top of any content priority list. At the moment I only have incentive to do content that will be profitable financially (as money is the only real form of progression) or dungeons that have armor with stats I want. With this I’ll have more incentive to do every type of content, just to get more skins.

The biggest issue I see with this is that ANet is currently making a lot of cash off of bank tabs and transmute stones. However, I would totally buy a wardrobe if they put it on the cash shop. Oh, and for any ANet folks reading this; my bank is full of everything else in the world, not outfits. I’ve got 8 bank slot tabs, and of that only about 5 items are stored there for ‘looks’.

I support the wardrobe idea.

You have my support. I hope ANet makes this happen!
